AUTHENTIC LEARNING

AUTHENTIC
LEARNING
CHARACTERI
STICS:
YES NO DISCRIPTION OF AUTHENTIC LEARNING IN MY MOOC
1. Real-world
relevance
My MOOC was having real life examples like
for example when they use elements like
oxygen, nitrogen, as well as carbon dioxide
compound. These they normal interfere in
real life for example when human beings
exhale carbon dioxide, it is then taken by
plant to use it photosynthesis.
2. ill-defined:

In my MOOC I was expected to use my
knowledge of definitions to define terms that
are used in chemistry. For example defining
what are compounds, elements, atoms,
mixture and so on.
3. Complex,
sustained
tasks:

There were complex problems in my MOOC
that required me to think. The complex
problem was that of calculating molality and
molarity, the problem was to differentiate
between the two. It took me 3 days to find out
the correct formulas that made realise the
difference.
4. Multiple
perspective
s

In my MOOC participant were allowed to
apply their different perspectives, because
there was rule which say we have to similar
resources in order to answer questions.
5. Collaborati
ve

6. Provide the
opportunity
to reflect

7. Interdiscipli
nary

8. Authentical
ly
assessed:

The MOOC was in line with the criteria of
assessment. The way they assessing me is
similar to the one use in CAPS. This enabled
me to copy with.
9. Authentic
products:

10. Multiple
possible
outcomes:

In my MOOC competing of solutions was
accommodated because they allow
participants to provide different answers on
one question. Therefore there were multiple
outcomes because at one is expected to
solve, react the chemical equation and use
correct formulas.

1 COLLABORATION
Marks Reasons
1. Students are required to work
in pairs or groups.
1

2. Students have shared
responsibility?
2

I give my MOOC this mark
because I was only expected to
share my knowledge and skills
when answering the questions.
For example I have to use my
knowledge of periodic table to
answer questions about chemical
reactions.
3. Students make substantive
decisions together?
3
4. Students make substantive
decisions together?
4
2 KNOWLEDGE CONSTRUCTION
Marks Reasons
1. Requires knowledge
construction?
1
2. Main requirement
Is knowledge construction?
2
3. Students are required
To apply their knowledge in a
new context?
3

In the MOOC I was doing I
have to apply the
knowledge I have about
Chemistry. For example
using convection factors to
move from one unit to
another, like from grams to
moles. Another thing I have
to use formulas I have
learnt in Physics 2B when
calculating volume,
concentration as well as
number of moles. I also
used my knowledge of
using the table of Solubility
to judge how soluble are
different compounds.
3.Learning activity is
Interdisciplinary?
4
3.REAL-WORLD PROBLEM SOLVING AND INOVATION

Marks Reasons
1. Main requirement is
problem solving?
1

I give my MOOC this mark
because many questions I was
doing required me solve a
problem. However some of real
life like mixing of chemical to find
a product, but 75% was solving
problem using correct formulas.
For example solving for
concentration using the formula to
calculate concentration.
2. Are students working on a
real-world problem?
2
3. Requires innovation? 3
4. USE OF ICT FOR LEARNING
MARKS REASONS
1. Students have the opportunity
to use ICT?
1
2. ICT supports students
knowledge construction?
2
3. ICT is required for
constructing this knowledge?
3

The reason why I give my MOOC
this mark is because I was
expected to use the computer as
well as the internet to answer
questions. For example I have to
download the table of solubility
and periodic table that will help in
answering all questions. Another
the MOOC directors were
notifying by the E-mail about what
is going on like telling me when
the next assessment is opening.
4 Students are designers of an
ICT product?
4
5 SELF-REGULATION
marks Reasons
1. Long-term activity AND
students have learning
goals and success criteria
in advance?
1
2. Students plan their own
work?
2
3. Students have opportunity
to revise work based on
feedback?
3

The reason why I give my MOOC
this mark is because I did have
time to plan my work according to
the timeframe provided to
complete the assessment.
Another thing after each and very
assessment they were providing
me with feedback, which enables
me revise my work and the
PARTNERS IN LEARNIG`S LEAP 21
opportunity to improve my marks.
6. SKILLED COMMUNICATION DECISION
Marks Reasons
1. Requires extended or
multi-model
communication?
1
2. Students must provide
supporting evidence?
2
3. Students communication
particular evidence?
3
4. Students communicate to
a particular evidence?
4

I believe that in MOOC there a
very good communication
between me and directors, reason
being that I was doing what they
intend to do. Since I believe that
for communication to be
successful that massage the
instructor must help the listener to
do what the instructor is
expecting.
