Choose the Options
SAFETY
The slip resistance of the flooring and walkway product
needs to be considered. Standard grating comprises plain
square edge flat bars.
To increase slip resistance the following points should be
considered on sloping walkways.
STEEL & ALUMINIUM GRATING
Although not mandated by AS 1657 the use of 10 x 10mm
square bar cleats or abrasive strips can be used for
additional security. ISO 14122.1 recommends cleats between
10 and 20. Serrated (see page 19) grating can be
specified. Stainless steel and any bars 20mm deep will not
be serrated.
In addition both steel and aluminium grating can improve
their slip resistance by setting the direction of walking over
the floor parallel to the loadbars. In steel grating there is
better slip resistance in patterns with 100mm cross rod
centres. i.e. Pattern A and C.
FIBREGLASS GRATING (FRP)
FRP grating is normally provided with an antiskid surface.
This is a coarse grit that is embedded into the top surface
of the grating. Plain top surface is available.
EXPANDED METAL
Slip resistance is improved if the direction of walking
is parallel to the Short Way Mesh (SWM).

Example of Coding
1. Use the Quick Guide on page 1 and add the options for Material, Top Surface,
Treatment/Colours and Panel size (if required) on page 3.
or
2. Choose a pattern from page 2 and choose a Load Bar from the Load Deflection Table
on pages 6 & 7. Add the options on page 3.
3. Panel size suffix should be stated only if you want a stock panel.
For example, A325MPU2 for an untreated stock panel 1200 x 6000.
For Fabricated grating the code would read A325MPU.
4. Specify whether the grating is to be Banded or Cut To Size Only by referring to the Terminology on page 19.
5. Nominate the number of panels required and provide dimensions for width and span of each panel.
Span is always the last dimension.
6. Where large floor areas are required provide a drawing of the area to be covered showing:
a) Dimensions.
b) Span.
c) Section size, location of, and toe direction of the support steel.
d) Location and size of cut outs and removable areas.
e) Location of kick plate and nosings.
f ) Indicate if penetrations are required to be split.
7. Specify fastener type if required. See pages 14 & 15.
Span Direction
Grating and expanded metal have to be supported in a specific way. The direction that the load bars run is the
important direction for grating and is referred to as the span.
For expanded metal the span is in the direction of the strands or Long Way Mesh (LWM).
Span is always the last dimension given when referencing a panel size.
Grating and expanded metal have to be supported 90 to the span direction and do not require support on the
other sides.

HOW TO ORDER EXPANDED METAL
FEATURES/BENEFITS
Expanded metal is one continuous single sheet of mesh
produced when a flat metal plate is sheared and stretched but
is left intact at the knuckles. It is available in a variety of
thicknesses with differing sizes and designs of the apertures.
The strands and knuckles are set at a uniform angle to the
plane of the sheet. This adds strength and rigidity and
distributes the load to the supporting frames.
Because there are no welds or joins it operates as a structural
member that distributes loads evenly over a wide area.
The high strength to weight ratio makes it suitable for many
industrial and ornamental applications.
No loose strands or welds means minimal deterioration from
constant exposure or movement.
A further feature is the provision of an excellent anti-slip
surface. This makes the product suitable for ramps (e.g. inclined
walkways adjacent to conveyors) platforms and stair treads.
The open nature of the product provides good visibility through
the mesh as well as the easy passage of air and sound whilst
ensuring security and protection.

Fixing Clips
Webforge believe that welding to the support structure is a suitable process. Minimum number of welds is four per panel.
Grating: Weld 5mm fillet 25mm long at 1000mm centres. Expanded Mesh: Weld every fourth strand.
CLIP FREQUENCY
Nominal 4 per panel.
(Approximately 3 per M
2
where span is > 1500mm. Approximately 5 per M
2
where span is > 750mm or less.)
Fixing clips are not generally recommended in areas of vibration or where lateral loads are applied to the grating.

WEBPLATE
Webplate is a composite flooring comprising floorplate welded to the top of grating.
Any grating pattern from page 2 can be combined with any floorplate thickness.
We recommend E pattern grating (similar to F pattern but with cross rods at 100mm centres).
Other combinations can be supplied if required.
Webplate is available in steel and aluminium in the following combinations:

CROSS ROD
In mild steel this is a twisted
square bar forged into the
top of the load bar.
In stainless steel grating this
is a round bar forged into the
top of the load bar.
In aluminium this is a square
bar inserted through punched
holes in the load bar and
swaged to hold it in position.
BANDED
Refers to the process of
welding a flat bar (normally
5mm) to the loadbars after
they have been cut to size to
provide a uniform appearance
around all sides of a grating
panel. This process also helps
prevent injury from laceration
during installation and assists
in keeping the panels flat.
SERRATIONS
Small notches made in the
top edge of the load bar to
assist in slip resistance.
NOSING
A member attached to or on
the leading edge of a stair
tread or at the top of a flight
of stairs to assist slip
resistance and to give a clear
visual indication of the edge
of the stairtreads.
Can be
Abrasive
Floor Plate
KICK PLATE
Heavy section flat bar welded
to ends or sides of panels and
around cut outs, etc. when
specified. Top edge to be
100mm above grating generally
and is typically 130 x 6.
CUT OUT
Grating areas removed from
panel to permit passage for
installation of pipes, plant
and structural and handrail
items.
GROSS AREA
The total area of grating as
shown on drawings using
overall width and length
dimensions of grating ie: WxL.
The gross area is always the
area calculated for invoicing
purposes.
WIDTH
Overall dimension of a panel
measured at right angles to the
load bars. Always called Width
even if greater than the length.
Terminology - Grating/ Expanded Metal
CUT TO SIZE ONLY
Refers to the process of
leaving the panels with a raw
cut edge and not banded as
described above.
EXACT SIZE
Refers to the requirement to
make the panels to an exact
dimension and not to be
adjusted to the nearest width
across the standard pattern
of the load bars.
LONG WAY MESH (LWM)
The distance from a point on
a knuckle to a corresponding
point on the following
knuckle measured across the
Long Way. LWM is the same
as span in grating.
SHORT WAY MESH (SWM)
The distance from a point on
a knuckle to a corresponding
point on the following
knuckle measured across the
Short Way.
LONG WAY OPENING (LWO)
The distance measured from the
inside of the knuckle in the
long way.
SHORT WAY OPENING (SWO)
The distance measured from
the inside of the knuckle in the
short way.
KNUCKLE
The intersection of 2 strands.
It is always the width of 2
strands.
OVERALL HEIGHT
The actual measurement of
the height of the mesh
measured at the knuckle.
LOAD BAR
Flat Bar from which grating
is made.
SPAN
Overall dimension of a panel
measured parallel with load bar.
Indicated by this symbol
FINGERS
In FRP grating this describes
a panel cut that does not run
adjacent to the load bar.
PENETRATIONS
As for cut out but typically
within the grating panel and
not on the edge.
