East Timor Genocide

By: J.C., Nick, Marisol

(mostly J.C.)

Classification, 1st Stage
Genocide began December 1975. As Indonesia
used its fight against communism as an excuse
to invade the suspected communist East
Timor.(source 2)

The only way they were symbolized was being
called communist.
Symbolization
The only way
they were
symbolized was
being called
communist.
Symbolization
The third stage of genocide
in east timor which is
dehumanization occurred
when the Indonesian
government expected the
East Timorese of being
communist and they were
slaughtered and called rats.
Dehumanization
They would strike fear into
the eyes of the East
Timorese by lining innocents
and gunning them down one
by one. (source 4)

Organization
People associated with the FRETILIN ( the revolutionary
front of independent East Timor) or suspected of being
members were killed. Sixty thousand timorese were killed
in the first three months in hopes of killing Fretilin
members. (source 3)
Polarization
Motives are that the
timorese were suspected of
being communist. Often
they were not identified but
indiscriminately slaughtered.
(source 7)
Identification
Genocidal massacres of men and at least one of women were happening following
the Indonesian invasion in 1975. (source 4) People were also starved to death or
died by disease. At the start of the occupation FRETILIN radio sent a broadcast
saying The Indonesian forces are killing indiscriminately. Women and children are
being shot in the streets. We are all going to be killed. This is an appeal for
international help. Please do something to stop this invasion. and The soldiers who
landed started killing everyone they could find. There were many dead bodies in the
streets all we could see were the soldiers killing, killing, killing. (source 7)
Extermination
The U.S. media has tried to blur the
clear connection of the U.S.s
involvement since 90% of weapons
were supplied by the U.S. along with
Indonesian soldiers trained by the U.S.
military.
