History

Mobile phones are also known as cellular phones, cell phones and handphones. The rst hand-
held cell phone was demonstrated by John F. Mitchell and Dr Martin Cooper of Motorola in
1973. The rst phone to be commercially available was DynaTAC 8000x in 1993. Worldwide
mobile phone subscriptions grew from 12.4 million to over 6 billion and reaching the bottom of
the economic pyramid.

Radiolinjia launched, the second generation (2G) digital cellular technology in Finland In
1991. And after ten years later, Japanese comapny NTT DoCoMo launched, the third
generation (3G) in 2001. By 2009, the industry began to look for data-optimized 4th-
generation (4G) technology cause the 3G networks got overwhelmed by the growth of
bandwidth applications like streaming media. 4G technology provides the speed improvements
up to 10-fold over 3G.

Use of Cell Phones

Mobile phones are now used for a variety of purposes in this age, for keeping in touch with
family, friends and business contacts. As mentioned, People use mobile phones for many other
purposes like -

Mobile banking and payments
For distributing content
Radiolinja made the rst mode of distributing and selling media contents through the mobile
phone by selling ringtones in 1998.

In 2006, the total worth of mobile phone contents was worth 31 billion dollars. Music over mobile
phone content worths 9.3 billion dollars, gaming was over 5 billion dollars in 2007.

Mobile banking and payments
Mobile phones are also now apart of banking and payments and many countries use them to
transfer cash payments.

The idea spread has been spread lately. The latest technology of mobile payments which is able
to make billing through contactless payments is called NFC (near eld communication), this
latest technology can be seen in most smartphone now.

Hand-held phone (mobile phone) were rst only able to make calls and receive calls over a
radio link on the go. Being able to make calls and receive moving around wide geographic area

range of area. By the time goes on, mobile phones have numbers of features nowadays.

Many mobile phones with different features with additional functions are now distributed by
many competing manufactures. Mobile phone development had been led to great innovation
over the past 20 years.

Few years back, the RIM BlackBerry focus on business enterprise/corporate customers by
giving them email needs. but multimedia purposes phones are mostly the hottest phone series
on the market like Sony-Ericsson 'Walkman' series and 'Cybershot' series and Nokia
'Nseries' and after Nokia Symbian Smartphones, a smartphone series called "iPhone" was
introduced by Apple Inc on June 29, 2007. and that's where great innovations start.
Smartphone runs on different Operating Systems like our Personal Computer. Android and
iOS are the top choice of Mobile OS-es (Operating System) on market right now in 2014.
Text messaging
also called SMS (Short Messaging Service) is the most commonly used data application on
mobile phones with an estimated 3.5 billion active users at the end of 2010.
Multimedia
Multimedia stuffs like photo, music and internet access are what Smartphones made Mobile
phone popular among teenagers. Back in 90s' no one could imagined having internet in your
pocket.

Different mobile operators and different countries offer internet-access through mobile phones
with different technologies like 2G, 3G, 4G, etc..

Health effects
According to recent studies cell phone usage for ten years approximately doubles the risk of
being diagnosed with brain tumor on the same side of the head as the preferred use of mobile
phones. But anyhow, a study published in 24 March 2012 in the British Medical Journal
questioned these estimates, because the increase of brain cancers has not paralleled the
enormous increase in mobile phone usage.
