OBJECTIVES
At the end of this course student should be able
To integrate the concepts, laws and methodologies from the first course in thermodynamics
into the analysis of cyclic process.
To apply the thermodynamic concepts into various thermal application like IC engine, steam
turbines, Compressors, Refrigeration and Air conditioning Systems.
UNIT I GAS POWER CYCLES 9
tto, !iesel, !ual and "rayton cycles, Calculation of mean effective pressure and air standard
efficiency. Actual and theoretical #$ diagram of four stroke engines and two stroke engines.
UNIT II INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES 9
Classification of IC engine, IC engine components and functions. $alve timing diagram and port
timing diagram. Comparison of two stroke and four stroke engines. %uel supply systems, ignition
systems, performance calculation. Comparison of petrol & diesel engine. %uels, air'fuel ratio
calculation, knocking and detonation. (ubrication system and cooling system. )*haust gas
analysis, pollution control norms.
UNIT III STEAM NOZZLES AND TURBINES 9
%low of steam through no++les, shapes of no++les, effect of friction, critical pressure ratio,
supersaturated flow. Impulse and reaction principles, compounding, $elocity diagrams for simple
and multistage turbines. Speed regulations ' governors and no++le governors.
UNIT IV AIR COMPRESSOR 9
Classification and working principle, work of compression with and without clearance. $olumetric
efficiency, isothermal efficiency and isentropic efficiency of reciprocating air compressors.
,ultistage air compressor and inter cooling - work of multistage air compressor. $arious types of
compressors .!escriptive treatment only/.
UNIT V REFRIGERATION AND AIR-CONDITIONING 9
$apour compression refrigeration cycle - super heat, sub cooling, performance calculations.
0orking principle of vapour absorption system - 1Ammonia - water2, 1(ithium bromide - water
