been going

doctoral
studies to flesh
out stories of
the vintage
Thanjavur era
and present
them in a
variety of
ways. In doing
this, she is
encouraging
rasikas to
appreciate the
less known heritage of
Indian dance.
This week,
Swarnamalya laid out the
less known histories of the
Nayak period in south
India, and highlights the
cross cultures that played
out then in music and
in dance.
The dancer has got up
an art exhibition curated
along with scholar
K. T. Gandhi Rajan of art,
paintings, photos and
copies from the Nayak and
post - Nayak era on the
performing arts. The show
is at the Roja Muthiah
Research Library at
Taramani campus and
runs for over a week from
March 15.
On March 14, she
hosted Dr S. Balusamy for
a talk on the Socio-
political, performance
histories and context of
classical music and dance
between the 16th and 19th
centuries at the MGR
Janaki College for Women.

Sri Adi Kesava Perumal Temple at Mylapore is hosting the
Brahmotsavam from Mar 17 to 27.
The festival will start with the pandakal on Mar 17 and
will end with a veedhi perapadu on Mar 27.
This will be followed by a music concert on Mar 28

A galaxy of top Carnatic music artistes and teams of
dancers will feature in the Vidyarti music series that follows
the Panguni utsav at Sri Kapali Temple, Mylapore.
The series starts on March 18 and ends on March 28.

DMK chooses sitting
MP to contest from
Chennai South
The DMK has chosen T. K. S.
Elangovan (photo on right) to be its
candidate for Chennai South in the
Lok Sabha poll to be held in April 24
in this state.
Elangovan is the sitting Member
of Parliament of the DMK represent-
ing Chennai North. He has been a
prominent spokesperson of the party
in Delhi and in the city and often
appears on TV channels, voicing his partys stand on
various issues.
The man from DMK who once represented this con-
stituency and was also a union minister, T. R. Baalu is now
the partys candidate in Thanjavur.
This weekend, the BJP is to name its candidates for
Tamil Nadu and its senior member, L. Ganesan is expected
to run in Chennai South.
Having named its candidates early, the AIADMKs
local units have had time to rustle up their
neighbourhood campaign and put it on the road.
Dr Jayavardan has started to campaign in the far
end of this constituency, as far as Virugambakkam in
the west while the DMK candidate, Elangovan has
chosen to start where the turf is firmer - in Saidapet,
where he has former city Mayor, M. Subramaniam at
his side.
Meanwhile, the civic body has completed wiping
clean all the political graffiti on walls and removing
banners of parties that hung around after recent
events.
At the Amma Unavagams and Amma Water Stalls,
while the word Amma remains following the Election
Commissions nod, the image of Jayalalithaa has been
blanked out with paper sheets.
The Mylapore MLAs office made sure that the
images were blocked temporarily on the large boards at
the gate to her office on C. P. Ramaswamy Road
in Alwarpet.
Mylapore Times launched a web site for the 2011 Lok
Sabha poll. It did not live beyond the honeymoon period of the
then elected MP.
This site has been revived. It offers simple, useful info and
also features news and pictures on campaigns, meetings and
photos of the poll scene locally.

G EATING OUT
Last Sunday evening, a bunch of people -
theatrepersons, dancers, lawyers and those who pursue
one form of artistic pursuit or the other gathered on a
terrace of a house in Karpagam Avenue in
Raja Annamalaipuram.
They were here at the invitation of Evam, a theatre
company promoted by Sunil Vishnu and Karthik Kumar.
Evam has given theatre and entertainment a professional
touch and changed the way theatre has been presented
in the city.
Its recent production, Ali J featuring one actor, Karthik
has been taken off the programmed performance schedules in
Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru because fringe rightwing
groups have raised all kinds of objections - saying it glorified
Jinnah and the Muslims and mocks at Indias freedom.
City-based Shekinah Jacob has written this play that
seems to look at what it is to be a Muslim today and she
borrows from milestones and developments in pre- and post-
Independent India to create the sub-texts in the play.
Ali J received some good reviews and appreciation from
the critics when it was staged at the Edinburgh Festival in UK
and it got a strong house when it was first staged at
Bengalurus Ranga Shankara.
Subsequently though, the fringe groups have seen to it
that the play never got performed. Their tactic was simple and
direct - inform the local police that the play was controversial
by citing odd references and hinting at inflammed protests at
the theatre venues if the play was staged.
The play was to have two shows at the Alliance Francaise
auditorium last Sunday, with shows booked up but on the
morning of the show, the Police Commissioners Office
advised the group not to stage it.
So the Evam group held a meet that evening to screen
video portions of the play which the fringe groups claim to be
inflammatory and to discuss with those present issues that
confront creative people when their works are either targeted,
curbed or nullified.
On the one side, creative works are being assessed by
people who have no clue about arts or literature or of the
rights of expression. Also the men in khaki seem to lean
towards loud fringe groups than be fair to writers, artists and
theatrepeople.
Unfortunately, the community does not rise when such
blatant violations take place in our midst. Artistes themselves
are slow to react and bond in solidarity when they are
threatened or gagged. Intellectuals and social activists seem
to sit back. And if civil society reacts, it talks about the issue
and goes back home or to work.
Who then will fight for creative rights?

goddess at Panguni
festival time is a work
of craft, one might say.
If only you care to
stop and look at it. Or
you get to admire it
when someone points
it out to you in the
jostling crowd that
goes after the
processions from
Sri Kapali Temple.
So who makes
these artistic jadais?
Enquiries reveal
that each jadai of the
artistic kind is a
donation by a devotee.
The donor family
informs the temple
office, gets the jadai
designed and hands it
over to the temple
for use.
Last Monday
evening, the goddess
wore the naga jadai.
On another morning,
the peacock jadai bore
a series of feathers of
the bird.
On days when there
are no donors, volun-
teers use fresh flowers
in place of the jadai.
Clearly, there are
artistic expressions
also on display at this
Panguni festival.

Gas cylinders lorries pose danger,
hamper MTC mini bus movement
We are from the residents association of Thiruveedhiammal
Koil Street (TAKSRA) R K Nagar.
It was a pleasant surprise to find MTC Mini Bus plying
through our road. Many of our residents took a ride and found
it convenient and comfortable. With inner roads like ours
getting connected our street residents are happy to use this
service (as against private vehicles) and contribute our little to
reduce global warming.
Now that the inner roads are getting connected perhaps
agencies like Police and Chennai Corporation should look into
the hindrances along these roads that hamper smooth
movement of the mini bus.
In our street, parking of vehicles is common, particularly
vehicles of Super Gas ; their trucks loaded with gas cylinders
are always parked at the T junction of our road
(Thiruveedhiamman Koil Street) with Sringeri Mutt Road. The
Chennai School is located at this junction and therefore it is all
the more sensitive an issue to address.
Our association and the HM from The Chennai School
have appealed /registered complaints to the Abiramapuram
Police Station on the gas cylinder lorries parking issue but we
are yet to see action on the ground.

BSNL does not take
complaint seriously

the poorly maintained BSNL
junction boxes at our build-
ing premises in Greencourt,
Visweswarapuram,
Mylapore. I have complained
many time to Mylapore DE
and he has not cared to
attend or rectify it.
Also, the broadband
network connection discon-
nects every 3 minutes
automatically. BSNL staff are
negligent and indifferent to
this problem but want our
monthly bills to be paid on
time.
We hope this letter will
wake up the BSNL team.

Transgenders pose problems
We face many problems from transgenders. They come in a
group, surround a person and demand money. Sometimes they
take away money from your purse. The problem is severe at
festival time; they threaten peole if money is not given.
Hawkers and shopkeepers of Mylapore are also targeted.
Something must be done.

MTC Mini Bus: suggestions
Thanks for the detailed report published in Mylapore Times on
the MTC mini-bus plying from Mandaveli to Adyar and back.
This is a welcome initiative. On Greenways Road and
Chamiers Road stretch, you have reported that the mini-bus now
stops at Andhra Mahila Sabha Hospital and Greenways Road
MRTS Station.
I would suggest two more stops for the benefit of residents of
Bishop Garden, Kesavaperumalpuram and R.A. Puram - a stop on
Greenways Road near State Human Rights Commission Office,
another stop on Chamiers Road just before the signal at the
turning towards Park Sheraton Hotel.
