The Contractor shall submit to the Engineer the names of the respective manufacturers and suppliers
from whom he proposes to obtain the various goods and materials required for the construction of the
Works. All goods and materials shall be furnished by an established and reputable manufacturer or
supplier. All goods and materials shall be new and shall be of first-class ingredients and construction,
designed and guaranteed to perform the service required.
Samples of goods and materials shall be provided by the Contractor to the Engineer's site office, as
directed, and when so directed by the Engineer. No separate payment will be made by the Department
for providing such samples of goods and materials and the cost thereof shall be included in the
applicable Items in the Bills of Quantities.
The Engineer will approve sources of goods and materials and will supervise the necessary tests on
representative samples thereof to ascertain their compliance with the requirements specified herein,
prior to delivery to the site of the Works. Goods and materials rejected by the Engineer shall be
removed from the Site at the Contractor's expense.
31.12.97/9023T XV2
The Contractor shall be solely responsible for securing all the materials of the types, quality and
quantity required for the project from any source unless otherwise specified. The Department does not
guarantee the availability of such materials on the local market. The Contractor, when directed by the
Engineer, shall engage and pay for the services of an independent testing laboratory to inspect the
fabrication of pipe during major production runs in the manufacturer's plant.
The pipe manufacturer shall certify and the independent testing laboratory shall verify that the pipe
meets prescribed specifications for each piece manufactured prior to delivery to the job site. The pipe
manufacturer shall provide three (3) copies of such certification with each shipment plus two (2) copies
of the certification mailed or hand delivered to the Engineer. The Contractor shall submit the name and
qualifications of the independent testing laboratory to the Engineer for approval prior to engaging their
services.
Before shipping from the pipe manufacturer's works, all pipes and fittings shall be adequately protected
against deterioration and accidental damage for the whole period of transit and delivery. The
Contractor shall be held responsible for all pipes and fittings so packed and/or protected to ensure that
they reach the site intact and undamaged. All pipes and fittings shall be packed to withstand rough
handling in transit and all packages shall be suitable for storage including possible delays in delivery.
The bells of pipes and fittings shall be protected by wooden discs or by other approved means. The ends
of spigot and socket pipes shall be protected by wrapping in burlap or by other approved means.
All pipes (including cut lengths) and fittings prior to delivery shall be indelibly marked with the
following information:
1. The manufacturer's name, initials, or identification mark,
2. The nominal internal diameter in millimeters,
3. Where applicable, the classification, i.e., pressure rating stiffness (to avoid confusion, pipe rated at
2.5 or 12.5 bars shall be marked 2-1/2 or 12-1/2 and not 2.5 or 12.5),
4. The date of manufacture, and
5. A suitable stamp to indicate that they have satisfactorily passed the required inspection and
hydraulic tests at the manufacturer's works.
b. Piping.
1. Polyvinylchloride Pipes for Irrigation Mains.
(a) PVC pipe shall comply with the following:
Plastic Pipe and Fittings: Polyvinylchloride (PVC) Plastic Pipe, Schedule 40, ASTM D1785 or
ISO Standard 138/2 N 238E, series S10 (class 10); manufactured from a compound which
meets the physical and chemical properties of ASTM D1784, Class 12454-B or ISO Standard
138/2 N 238E. Sizes shall be as indicated on the Drawings. Pipe in general shall be socket
type, complying with the requirements of ASTM D1785; ends of pipe lengths at plastic
expansion joint units shall have flange fittings.
Plastic pipe fittings shall be ring washer socket type complying with the requirements of ASTM
D2466 or ISO Standard 138/2 N 238E. Provide standard PVC types except where special
factory fabricated units are required due to non-standard angles or other special conditions as
indicated on the Drawings. Fabricate special PVC fittings to meet accurate dimensions taken
in the field. Special fittings, if mitered and welded, shall have factory bonded glass over-wrap
reinforcing at the miter joints and shall meet all the strength requirements of standard fittings.
