CUTTING
Astralloy-V plate can be cut using traditonal methods (oxy, plasma,
laser). Plates less than 1" do not need preheatng, except in cold or
humid climates. Recommended preheatng temperature is 250F
(120C). All plates larger than 1" should be preheated between 400F
and 600F (205C and 315C) in order to avoid premature hardening
and cracking.
Preheated areas should be 2" to 3" on each side of the projected
cut. We recommend that sufcient tme is allowed for preheatng
so that the temperature can be evenly distributed throughout the
plate thickness.
When fabricatng gears or sprockets, we recommend the material
be stress relieved between 500F and 600F (260C 315C). Please
contact our technical department for more informaton.
Shearing is not recommended, as damage to shears may result from
Astralloy-Vs higher physical propertes.
DRILLING
Astralloy-V can be drilled with a high speed alloy or hardened bit.
The drill bit must be sharpened so that it has an angle of 140 to
150, being careful to center the point of union between both sides.
The speed for cobalt drill bits should be 8 10 SFM and 4 6 SFM
for high speed drills with a feed of 0.004" per revoluton.
To prevent Astralloy-V from work hardening, it is essental to use
a positve power feed with abundant soluble lubricant to dissipate
heat and lubricate the cutng edges.
FoRMIng And RoLLIng
When preparing for forming or rolling Astralloy-V, we recommend
grinding all edges to round of sharp corners in order to prevent
cracking. The minimum ambient temperature should be at least
80F (25C) and when cold forming with a hydraulic press, the
required minimum internal radius is 24 tmes the plate thickness. It
is recommended that Astralloy-V be cross grained formed, however
it is not essental.
One of the greatest advantages of Astralloy-V, compared to other
wear steels, is that it can be hot formed and allowed to air cool
without losing its original propertes. We recommend a minimum
temperature of 1600F (870C). Hot forming at a temperature below
1450F (788C) will result in lower hardness, greater stress levels and
reduced abrasion resistance.
WELdIng
In order to weld Astralloy-V, a fresh and dry electrode that is low
in Hydrogen is recommended. The E7018 is excellent for normal
welding procedures, providing adequate strength with good ductlity.
In colder climates, it is always recommended that the plate be
preheated to over 300F (149C) to remove moisture. The preheatng
should be applied to areas that will be welded and must uniformly
penetrate the full thickness of the plate. In cold temperatures or
moving air, insulate the weld to prevent rapid cooling.

Astralloy 8000 is an ant-abrasive, high-quality oil tempered steel. It is characterized by its
high performance, with resistance to wear 50% beter than water tempered 500 BHN steels.
Astralloy 8000 features an innovatve concept, based on an original combinaton of chemical
analysis and heat treatment (oil tempering). This combinaton gives the steel enhanced
resistance to abrasion by adding the following features:
* Fine chrome and molybdenum carbides that reinforce the steels microstructure.
* Exceptonal added 70 BHN work hardening capacity, produced by a metallurgical process
called Transformaton Induced Plastcity (TRIP).

CUTTING
* All the classic thermal cutng processes (oxy-plasma-laser) can
be used without preheatng for thicknesses up to 1 " (the plate
temperature must be at least 50F (10C). Plates above 1 " thick
must be preheated to 302F (150C) to avoid fractures at the
edges. Plasma and laser processes are especially recommended
because they increase the precision and appearance of cuts and
limit alteraton of the afected area.
* Water jet cutng can be used.
* Do not shear thin plates.
MACHINING
* HSSCO high-speed steel bits should be used for drilling
(ex. AR 2.9.1.8 in accordance with ANFOR, M42 in accordance
with AISI), with conical shank, long helices, and short insert tps.
* Lubricate with soluble oils diluted to 20%.
* Carbide (K10 or K20) and evenly coated (TIN) bits signifcantly
improve performance when boring multple holes.
FoRMIng
* Cold forming or bending can be performed without difculty, as
long as the following conditons are observed:
Edges prepared by grinding to minimize imperfectons
produced by oxycutng.
Respect the minimum bend radius. The plate temperature
must be at least 50F (10C).
* Astralloy 8000 can be hot formed at temperatures of 930 1020F
(500 550C), without the need for subsequent heat treatng.
WELdIng
Astralloy 8000 plates can be welded using any conventonal welding
technology such as: manual welding with coated electrode, submerged arc
welding and gas metal arc welding with fux cored wire. These plates can
be welded without preheatng, for combined thickness up to 50 mm (2").
Surfaces to be welded must be sufciently clean, to avoid
deterioraton by oil, oxide, grease or other contaminant.

EB 450 is a liquid, quenched and tempered, through-hardened, high impact alloy steel
with excellent abrasion-resistant propertes. Its balanced boron, modifed nickel-chrome
moly chemistry is ideal for achieving an optmum hardness to toughness rato. EB 450
boasts a longer wear life due to its through-hardness which is more uniform than what
is found in conventonal carbon/manganese steels. This quench-hardened material is
compettvely priced for optmum cost/wear ratons. This steels resistance to atmospheric
corrosion further reduces surface pitng. EB 450 is feld proven in extremely abrasive bulk
handling installatons.

BEnEFITS
* Higher wear resistance, when compared to conventonal steels,
due to its uniform hardness.
* Easy to weld with normal low hydrogen simple techniques.
* May be fame cut with oxyacetylene, plasma or similar methods.
* Cold formable with heavy presses or rolls.
* The high hardness and toughness in combinaton with its high
fricton coefcient, reduces maintenance costs.
* EB 450 may be easily cut, welded, machined and cold formed,
as required.
The following parameters are provided as a guide:
CUTTING
The most common cutng methods for EB 450 plate are fame
and plasma. For a successful cut, use the procedures and fuel
recommended by equipment vendors.
As a precauton, the EB 450 plates must be pre-heated before
cutng. Thicknesses of up to 1" require a temperature of 250F
(120C) and larger thicknesses require a temperature of 300F
(140C).
Normally, for ant-abrasive applicatons, these cut methods provide
a precision range of +/- 1/8" along the length and width. For
applicatons where stricter tolerances are required, please consult
our technical department.
DRILLING
EB 450 requires slow speeds for beter drilling. Feed speed must be
maintained constant.
For optmum drilling results, we recommend using low rpm speeds
for tools, short stem bits and generous cutng lubricaton. Bits with
carbide inserts provide longer life; however, a good quality high
speed bit is enough.
To re-sharpen the tool, a point angle between 135 and 150 and
negatve rake is recommended. Speed must be between 10 20
SFPM (surface feet per minute). For example, when drilling 3/4", the
feeding must be between 0.004" and 0.008" per revoluton.
MAnUFACTURIng
Despite the high toughness of EB 450, it is possible to bend it
with a hydraulic press and cold form it. We recommend bending it
transverse to the rolling directon marked on each plate.
The internal minimum radius for forming EB 450 is:
* When bending transverse to the rolling directon, the minimum
radius is 6 tmes the thickness of the plate.
* When bending parallel to the rolling directon, the minimum
radius is 12 tmes the thickness of the plate.
* To cold bend the EB 450 plate to 90, form in gradual steps
without exceeding the recommended minimum radius.
WELdIng
The EB 450 is readily weldable by following some basic welding
guidelines.
To prevent cracking during the welding process, the following three
areas should be controlled:
1. Eliminate hydrogen pick-up in the weld metal during welding.
2. Minimize stress in the weld joint.
3. Use proper preheat and interpass temperatures and avoid rapid
cooling of the weld area following welding.
While welding the EB 450 product, we recommend the use of skip
welding and backstep welding procedures, as well as minimizing the
heat input.

AstraWear 500F
AstraWear 500F is a water tempered martensitc steel, with 500 BHN (51.5 HRC), typical
hardness and resistant to wear from very severe abrasion. Its mechanical propertes,
high wear resistance, hardness, and strength make AstraWear 500F steel ideal for use in
applicatons requiring resistance to sliding abrasion and where 400 BHN steels do not provide
a long enough service life.
Compared with conventonal steels, like A572-50 (S355), AstraWear 500F ofers real
improvement in equipment lifespans, of up to 5 tmes, and consequently allows for signifcant
reductons in design thickness.
AstraWear 500F steel is especially suited for applicatons in quarries, constructon, mines,
cement plants, and the iron and steel industry, among others.

AstraWear 450F
AstraWear 450F is a water tempered martensitc steel, with typical hardness of 450 BHN,
which ofers a real response to wear from abrasion. Its resistance, high hardness, and yield
strength make it highly resistant to plastc deformaton and wear from scraping and impact.
AstraWear 450F shows resistance to wear typically equal to 4 tmes and any yield strength 3
tmes greater than those of a A572-50 (S355) steel. Using AstraWear 450F represents a major
improvement in terms of service life and lightening of equipment by reducing thickness. AstraWear
450F is easy to process, has good welding capacity and good bendability, considering its outstanding
mechanical propertes.
This steel is especially suited for applicatons in quarries, constructon, mines, cement plants,
and the iron and steel industry, among others.
AstraWear 450F is a grade especially suited for manufacturing truck bodies.

Over " to 1 " incl. 150F
Over 1 " to 2 " incl. 200F
Over 2 " 250F
A preheat or inter-pass temperature above the minimum shown may be required for highly restrained
welds - preheat or inter-pass temperatures should not exceed 400F for thicknesses up to 1 " or 450F
for thicknesses over 1 ".
It is important to note that Grades B, F, H, and Q may be susceptble
to cracking in the heat afected zone of welds during post weld heat
treatment (stress relief). Careful consideraton should be given to
this phenomenon by competent welding engineers before stress
relieving is applied to weldments.
CUTTING
* Thermal or oxy-fuel cutng of plate steel with an oxygen torch is
recommended.
* Preheat plate thicknesses of 2 " and under; to a minimum of

FoRMIng
Cold, warm, and hot forming are processes that can be utlized. The
mechanical propertes of the partcular steel grade being formed
dictates the process required for forming. Guidelines for forming
structural grades were developed by an AISI study. These results are
summarized and published in ASTM A6 Appendix X4.

Chemical Compositon of overlay* % Weight

ASTRALLoY TRIP-L-TUFF PLATE
Advantages over other wear materials
Metal: Astralloy Trip-L-Tuf has signifcant advantages in some areas
over AR products. Astralloy Trip-L-Tuf has the yield strength of mild
steel, making it easy to bend. It has no memory, so it holds shape. It
is not heat treated, so welding does not afect its propertes. It can
be formed to a radius as small as 3" (on thin plate.) With the relaxed
conditon of the Astralloy Trip-L-Tuf base material, the forming will
not create cracks on the outer bend, and with the consistency of the
Astralloy Trip-L-Tuf weld material,no spalling or breakage will occur
on the inner surface.
Base material is ASTM A 36 structural steel. The overlay consists of
predominantly hard chromium carbides in a tough iron-base matrix.
Nominal hardness is 555 653; microhardness of chromium carbide
is 1800 VPH (70 75 Rockwell C converted.)
Astralloy Trip-L-Tuf combines a super hard, tough surface on a ductle
and weldable mild steel backing to provide the ultmate wear-
resistant plate. Superior metallurgical propertes achieved In a highly
controlled process utlizing the proper blend of elements result in an
overlay with an abundance of ultra-hard chromium carbide partcles
evenly distributed in an extremely hard, tough matrix. These carbides
are 3 to 4 tmes as hard as steel as measured in microhardness tests.
The combinaton of the hard overlay with a structural steel backing
facilitates ready adaptaton to a variety of feld wear situatons. The
composite plate can be moderately formed and readily welded or
bolted in place.
Astralloy Trip-L-Tuf will typically exhibit stress relief cracks in the
overlay surface. These cracks are an inherent feature of hard-facing
and develop as the overlay cools following depositon, at 5/8" to 2"
spacing transverse to the weld bead. They are confned to the overlay
and do not penetrate into the base plate nor propagate in service.
ASTRALLoY TRIP-L-TUFF PIPE And ELBoWS
The overlay applied to Astralloy Trip-L-Tuf pipe has the same
chemistry and propertes as the plate overlay. It is applied to the
inside or outside of the pipe, as required. All sizes are available down
to 2" inside diameter.
Applicatons and Uses
Astralloy Trip-L-Tuf pipe is used primarily for wear due to fricton.
With plate, this could be from coal, rock, or gravel moving through
or across a chute, liner, cyclone, sizing screen, dozier blade, breaker
plate, etc. With the pipe, applicatons may include slurry, coke, coal
dust, etc.
Advantages over other wear materials
Ceramic: Astralloy Trip-L-Tuf also has certain advantages over
ceramics. Given the high price of ceramics, cost is a major factor.
Installaton costs are also a factor due to the thickness and
atachment procedures necessary for the fragile ceramic.
Chipping is another factor inherent in ceramic. Ceramic cannot
handle impact whatsoever, whereas the Astralloy Trip-L-Tuf will
handle moderate to (in some cases) severe impact. Atachment
failure is yet another drawback to glued on ceramic pieces. In piping,
Astralloy Trip-L-Tuf is partcularly beter suited than ceramic. Due to
the thickness of ceramics, special odd-ball mechanical tubing and
elbow sizes, as well as fanges must be located and purchased, or
fabricated. Astralloy Trip-LTuf can be applied to every pipe or elbow
size, from a minimum of 2" inside diameter. Flanges, couplings, and
connectons are no longer a concern.

FoRMIng
* Astralloy Trip-L-Tuf can be formed by conventonal shop
procedures. The overlay side must be on the inside of any formed

Electrodes for Welding Like Metals (Mn to Mn)
* Use austenitc manganese composite electrodes covered or
tubular with less than 0.025% phosphorus and greater than 14%
manganese. Several good proprietary rods are available. The
following are recommended:
Covered - McKay Hardalloy 118 - composite coated, low
phosphorus austenitc manganese 21% alloy steel.
Tubular - McKay Tube-Alloy 218-0. - low phosphorus
austenitc manganese 19.5% alloy steel.
Electrodes for Welding dissimilar Metals (Mn to Mild Steel)
* Austenitc stainless steel- Type 308-16, 309-16, or 310-16 ttania

expensive than manganese steel fller metals.
* For fux-cored arc welding with an auxiliary gas, the best results
are obtained when the shielding gas is 100% argon.
Storage of Electrodes
* Purchase low hydrogen electrodes in hermetcally sealed
containers. Large containers may have electrodes with too much
moisture which can result in underbead cracking. Electrodes
which are exposed to air for over one hour should be baked in a
500F ventlated oven for two hours.

process involves heatng the steel under the drill point, not just
cutng it cold.
* Maintain selected speed and constant feed pressure.
* Use rust-inhibited water coolant to minimize drill heatng.
* Because Rol-Man is a work hardening steel, conventonal drill bits
tend to harden rather than cut the steel.

MACHINING
For the best contnuous machining, we recommend using disposable negatve rake,
mechanically clamped tungsten carbide inserts and contoured grinders.
For an excellent fnish, speeds should be 180 to 270 SFM. A generous and contnuous
lubricant/coolant bath will prolong tool life.
For beter metal removal, the cutng depth should exceed the feed rate by a factor of 10.
MILLING
For optmum metal removal in interrupted machining, use negatve rake, mechanically
clamped tungsten carbide inserts. The generally recommended feed rate is 0.003" per tooth.
The total cutng rate is equal to 0.003" tmes the number of inserts in the cuter x rpm.
Uniform feed distributon requires the use of precision inserts.
At a hardness of 350 BHN, 150 surface feet per minute is reasonable. Slower rates for greater
hardness and higher rates for lesser hardness.

In order to weld Astralloy-V, a fresh and dry electrode that is low in Hydrogen is
recommended. The E7018 is excellent for normal welding procedures, providing adequate
strength with good ductlity.
In colder climates, it is always recommended that the plate be preheated to over 300F to
remove moisture. The preheatng should be applied to areas that will be welded and must
uniformly penetrate the full thickness of the plate. In cold temperatures or moving air,
insulate the weld to prevent rapid cooling.

FoRMIng
BP6:33 can be formed using either a brake press or by roll forming.
Because of its high toughness, BP6:33 forms to shapes not possible
with other high strength steel alloys, even those with hardnesses
as low as 321 BHN. Although modern meltng practces minimize
directonal diferences in the mechanical propertes of BP6:33 plate,
cross grain forming is preferred, especially when cold forming to tght
radii. During cold forming, allow 4 tmes the brake press power
required for forming the same thickness and size of mild steel. Also,
when forming cold, an allowance should be made for spring back.
Forming should be done hot (1600F minimum) if the bend radius
is less than approximately 20 to 24 tmes the thickness of the plate,
or if the forming equipment does not have adequate power to
overcome 172,000 psi yield strength. Unlike quenched and tempered
alloy steels, BP6:33 can be hot formed without loss of hardness
and allowed to air cool. Provided the hot formed parts are cooled
with free air circulaton afer forming, they will not only regain their
original high hardness, but also retain high toughness and strength.
WELdABILITY
As with other high strength steels, welding of BP6:33 requires special
consideratons. When welded with proper techniques, BP6:33
provides signifcant advantages over other ballistc steels. Because
of its air-hardened ability, the hardness of the heat afected zone
is similar to that of the base metal, virtually eliminatng concern for
sof zones next to the weld.
APPLICATIONS
Some of the many applicatons where BP6:33 has been successfully
