THORWALD JRGENSEN

Thorwald Jrgensen, a Dutch performer of chamber music, soloist and orchestral thereminist
throughout Europe, North America and Russia. At the age of 14, he started his first percussion lessons
with Peter Elberse, timpanist for the Dutch Philharmonic Orchestra. After graduating high school, he
went to study classical percussion at the Utrecht and Tilburg Conservatory, where he studied with
Werner Otten, Hans Zonderop, Johan Faber and Peter de Vries. He graduated with a Music Masters as a
student of Arnold Marinissen. Thorwald is currently being coached by Saskia Boon, former cellist with
the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
He is a member of the percussion group of the Zeeland Symphony Orchestra and its artistic committee.
He performed in recitals as a soloist and with orchestras such as Het Zeeuws Orkest, Nederlands Theater
Orkest, Limburgs Symfonie Orkest, and others. His aspiration is to promote the Theremin and to show its
possibilities and beauty to a larger audience.
Thorwald Jrgensen and Thijn Vermeulen (piano) worked together years ago when the former was
active only as a percussionist. Thijn was Thorwalds regular partner for recitals and chamber music from
the moment the latter started giving concerts with the Theremin. They showcased themselves as a duo
for chamber music. They focus not only on original music for Theremin, but also operations of both
great classical masters and contemporary composers. As to their wide-ranging approach, the duo is
always looking for new opportunities to the public. The special quality of the combination of Theremin
and piano become renowned as they played in a variety of concert venues and festivals, such as Festival
Classique in The Hague and the Swiss NODE Festival.
A remarkable highlight to him was when he performed the Dutch Premiere of the Theremin concertino
of AnisFuleihan. Furthermore, he performed in a radio and television and played several festivals. He
was also invited as a guest lecturer in a composition class at Amsterdam and Rotterdam Conservatory.
Moreover, he was also collecting an expensive library of original music for the Theremin from music
libraries and privates collections both Holland and abroad. He was expanding his collection by adding
music for string instrument and voice. Specifically, he arranged his couple of Theremin concertinos
symphonic wind band. He conclude that mixing and varying repertoire serve as a demonstration of the
fact that the Theremin is much more than an instrument for dramatic effects in movies. He played the
Theremin part in Miklos Rozsas Spellbound Concerto during his prom concert at Zeeland Symphony
Orchestra.
He is also a great lover of chamber music in all its forms, from only Theremin and piano to larger
ensembles. He also played the Midsomer Murders theme, Le Rossigno (Alyabieff), and first Airphonic
suites using his Theremin and orchestra.
Last June and July, during his tour in the Canada and USA he performed a concert at New York Theremin
Society followed by the Boston Vilna Shul. Subsequent to that, he made recording in Montral with a
Canadian musician, SbastienLafleur. The last stop he made was Ottawa to perform at Music and
Beyond festival, where played three recitals.
