Headmasters Corner

What an absolutely wonderful week we have had! The Inter House Music Competition was pleasure to hear and I
congratulate all the children who took part, especially Churchill who won by just one point.

Staying on the music theme we congratulate Elliot Orchard for being
awarded a scholarship by Clifton High for both music and sport.

On Monday our highly successful Tennis Team racked up another famous victory;
this time beating our friends from Wycliffe College 8-1; well done to the whole team!
This was followed on Wednesday by all of the boys teams ending victorious in the
cricket matches. These results brought to an end the fixtures for this year which saw
some very impressive results in indeed for both girls and boys of all ages.

We look forward to seeing you all at tomorrows triathlons and we wish Years 6-8 a very enjoyable week as they head off
on their residential trips.

LOWER SCHOOL PARENTS : - Please dont forget to come along to the Swimming Gala next Thursday

YEARS 7&8 You will have noticed from the calendar that we will be taking the children to the Houses of Parliament on
2
nd
July. Our tour starts at 9.10am so I am afraid that we will need to leave by 6am to ensure that we arrive on time. We
will be travelling by minibus and the school car and aim to return to school by normal pick up time.

Speech Day promises to be an extremely positive event as we have so much to celebrate and I would like to remind you
that this is open to parents of all year groups. Children from Reception upwards are expected to be in attendance.

We would like to congratulate Mrs Wakeling who represented Wales in the Masters World Cup Hockey Tournament last
week. This must have been an amazing experience for her (despite the black eye and five stitches!!). We are very proud of
her and a more detailed report can be found later in this newsletter. Well done Mrs Wakeling!

OWLS SWIMMING: Very Big CONGRATULATIONS to all the Owls who this morning managed to swim 5 metres without
any aids or help - a fantastic achievement - young triathletes in the making?

MUSIC NEWS

Lower School Concert: Well done to all the children who took part in the concert last Thursday 12th June. We all
enjoyed a fantastic concert with a lovely appreciative audience. There were some wonderful piano and singing solos
from lots of Year 2's, incredible violin playing from Lily Edwards and Amy Tucker as well as drum solos from Oliver
Edge and Henry Packham. Mr Symonds congratulated all the Year 2's on the lovely sound their recorders made and
Krystof Soukup-Carne treated us to a lovely song on his ukulele with an entourage of backing vocals from lots of year 2
girls. There was some good percussion playing and changing instruments from Reception and Year 1s. The singing
from the Lower School choir was excellent in How doth the little crocodile and The Bare Necessaties. Indeed, all the
children from the Owls to Year 2 sand really well and seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves, particularly in our final
dancy number when parents were invited to join in the Jellyfish Jump!
Well done everyone and thanks to parents for coming to watch.

The House Music Competition: This was a great success yesterday with some really fantastic solo playing and sing-
ing from all the houses. Martin Rogers, Tockington's brass teacher, gave some really positive feedback in his adjudicat-
ing and was very impressed at the musical talent of pupils at school. The marks were all really high and competition
was close with particularly fine performances from Jeanne Veron singing 'A dream is a wish', Annabel Sheppard sing-
ing 'Let's go fly a kite', Olivia Campbell who treated us to a gorgeous rendition of 'Adelita' on the piano and Roshan
Patel who gave a stunning drum improvisation as Churchill's 'Wild Card'. Dalis Jones and Talia Curtis provided a lovely
variation to the competition with their gymnastics display and all the houses performed well
with their Michael Jackson songs. Alexander's 'Thriller' included an excellent narration from
Alex Ganfield and some eerie laughter at the close. Churchill's 'Man in the Mirror' showed
good dynamic changes and excellent stage presentation. Cunningham's 'Beat it' was very
entertaining with some wonderful solos from Tom Edwards and Toby Gaulton and some
brilliant air guitar playing and antics from the suitably wigged Archie and George Symonds.
It was a really fun event but the closing scores, neatly calculated by Abi Blackwell, revealed
this year's winners as Churchill. Well
done to all the children and thank you to
all the staff for their support. MW

OOPS!
Just like a pro
News from Ms Case
Submariner Commander Duncan visited us at the end of last week as our guest speaker for the Look@MyWork assem-
bly. He gave us a very interesting talk about what led him to join the Navy, what qualifications he needed to get there
and what it is like to live for up to three months at a time in the confined space of a submarine full of technology. He de-
scribed sleeping in a cabin bed with not enough room to read a book lying on your back; taking a sailors shower and he
explained how the pressure of being deep down in the sea makes metal creak and distort. He also told us about how
much he always enjoyed his work on board a submarine, how it was stimulating and how he met a lot of very interesting
people. We are grateful to all our speakers this year to date and a special thank you to Commander Duncan!
On Thursday afternoon, the Rotary Club from Thornbury and Mrs Delia Williams came into school to judge the School
Heat of the Youth Speaks competition for Year 6. The afternoon was spent watching all eight speakers giving fabulous
talks on a wide range of subjects. All of the talks were very interesting. The children were confident and well-informed
and the Rotary Club described the talks as very close indeed with everyone scoring more than 200 out of 300 points. In
third place was Helena Brain, second was Alex Jacobi and Beth Pritchard came first with a talk on toys and how they
affect children. She now goes forward to the Final on July 7
th
. We congratulate her and wish her every success.

The best Masters Tournament ever
The FIH Masters World Cup Tournament was hosted at Rotterdam hockey club. 74 teams (men
and Women) from 21 countries took part in the tournament, which lasted 11 days. The enthusiasm,
the public, the dynamics, the friendship, the weather - everything went very smoothly. Australia,
The Netherlands, Germany, England and South Africa - all the usual suspects - dominated the
Masters finals - but we also had teams from Ghana and Egypt. Australia emerged as the big win-
ners, taking four of the nine titles on offer. England won 3, The Netherlands 1 and Germany 1.

The Welsh women had a very tough pool coming up against Australia (the eventual winners), South
Africa, England(3rd place) and Scotland. We then had to play off for the 5th - 8th position, facing
New Zealand and South Africa again - we ended up in 8th place.. The whole tournament was an
amazing experience, playing on the stadium pitch with the crowd singing the National
Anthem as we walked out was a fantastic moment. I was so pleased to have been a part of it.

This was the best Masters tournament ever said Jan Meurer, chairman of the FIH Masters organ-
ising committee. I hope this event will help promote hockey for older age groups all over the
world. EW
