At a Glance The nutrition guideline criteria were developed with the help of experts and align to the federal Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The criteria assess food items and meals based on the following:
Do they contribute to a nutritious diet? Fruit, vegetables, whole grain, low fat dairy, or lean protein?
Do they encourage kid-appropriate portions? Calorie criteria
Do they limit nutrients to avoid? sodium, sugar, saturated fat, trans fat 2 | P a g e
What should we eat and how? In effort to simplify complex nutritional facts and portions we have developed a pictorial guide to illustrate portion sizes and indicate the nutritional contents that are within the portion. Furthermore, we used the widely used color coding developed by choosemyplate.gov in order match our guidelines with their respective food groups while illustrating the proportions graphically. Considerations and Exceptions: Meal Types: Meals (Complete, Mini, Breakfast meals): Individual food elements of a pre-bundled or pre-packaged meal or snack may not be calculated separately (e.g. sandwich and chips). If meals come with beverages, beverage must be compliant (water-based beverage, low-fat milk, 100% juice). Side Dish: Stand-alone fresh fruit and vegetables automatically pass. Food Categories: Shaped Prepared Nuggets and Meatballs: Lean meats (15% total fat by weight recommended) Vegetable proteins (e.g. soy) are acceptable to reduce fat content per government guidelines Larger serving sizes are permitted (e.g.4 oz. fillet), however, the product may not exceed nutrition criteria as listed above.
