The formula for estimating square yards for concrete is as follows;
Length (ft) x Width (ft) x Depth (in) = X
You then need to divide X by 324 to get the total in square yards.
If you are unsure about measuring for concrete, it would be advisable to get an experienced builder to help. A free and easy way of doing
this would be to request a builder to come out and give you a quote for the work you want done; such as concreting a driveway. After
indicating the area you want covered, the builder will normally give you a quote for the work, with the measurements they have taken to
validate the quote.
This is a better tactic than trying to take measurements yourself - a wrong calculation could be lead to a large error. It is possible you
could order too much concrete or far too little - leading to a major headache and waste of money.
If you are planning on laying the concrete yourself, it is important to know the correct method of doing so. Taking a short-cut by doing
it yourself may save money on builder's fees, but could actually cost more if you then need to pay for someone to rectify your mistakes.

Length (feet) x Width (feet) x Depth (inches) = X
X divided by 324 will give how many CY you need

Example: A patio of 12 feet by 10 feet at 6 inches deep = (12' x 10' x 6") / 324 = approx. 2.25 cubic yards (2.22 rounded to a typical
delivery amount)

Square yards would just be length times width.
If measured in feet, length times width, answer divided by 9 for SY.
The first answer is excellent for CY, note feet for l and w, depth in inches.
