Library construction nears completion
By KYLE CARNEY
The Sun
Town Hall opened its doors a
month ago at the May 19 Council
meeting. Now, the new
Moorestown Library is set to
open within the week.
Everything is nearly done,
and we will just be waiting for the
Certificate of Occupancy to open
the doors to the public, Project
Executive Rob Notley said. We
are very proud of what this build-
ing stands for and what it will
mean for the community.
While the library was not de-
stroyed in the fire that devastated
Town Hall seven years ago, the
township decided to attach a new
library to the Town Hall that was
to be built.
The old library was a wonder-
ful building, Notley said. We
just wanted to create a modern
building that reflected
Moorestown and offered resi-
dents all the advancements of the
modern world.
There are a few striking differ-
ences between the old library and
new one, inside and outside.
The red brick and columns re-
flect the overall colonial feeling of
Moorestown, Notley said. We
also wanted to give the space an
open feel with lots of natural
light.
There are also a lot of technical KYLE CARNEY/The Sun
Workers try to get the final stages of construction complete at the new Moorestown Library. The library is set to open in the next week and
will feature a lot of upgrades from the old building, including wifi throughout, screens on the ends of bookshelves and an outdoor courtyard.

improvements in the new library.
Screens will be displayed at the
end of bookshelves to allow pa-
trons to search for books, and
there will be wifi throughout the
building. There are also solar
panels for hot water heating, and
the air handling units feature UV
treatment of supply air.
It was very important that the
new library be functional as well
as beautiful, Notley said. Wifi
was a major issue in the old li-
brary because of the thick walls
and floor, so we made sure the
new building would be wifi acces-
sible throughout.
And while the new features of
the library will make the experi-
ence inside more enjoyable, the
building itself is designed to
bring the community together.
To a great extent, these build-
ings symbolize Moorestowns
confidence and its continuing de-
sire of being an attractive place to
live and operate a business,
Moorestown resident Peter Vos-
bikian said. Attracting people
and businesses to a community
begins with exhibiting the confi-
dence to invest in itself.
There were a lot of people in-
volved with the project, including
the Ragan Design Group, which
developed the plans for the build-
ing, Greyhawk Construction,
which provided project manage-
ment, and Sambe, which did the
construction.
Its a wonderful accomplish-
ment by the people of
Moorestown and all of those who
worked hard to make this project
a success, Vosbikian said.

e realize that you may have
other, more pressing con-
cerns on your mind. After
all, summer has officially started, the
kids are out of school, its hot, its
rainy, then its hot again.
Youd rather be by a pool or at the
beach, avoiding the South Jersey bear
or the Jersey Shore shark, planning
your Fourth of July celebrations, your
family vacation, or pondering the silli-
ness of the government making salt
water taffy the states official candy.
And yes, we realize that late June is
not typically the time for reflection.
That is usually reserved for the wan-
ing days of December and the begin-
ning of a new year.
But for us at Elauwit Media, weve
spent the last few months looking
back, and well be spending a chunk of
our summer doing the same.
Thats because, come August, well
be turning 10 years old. Our first
newspaper, The Haddonfield Sun, de-
buted in August 2004. Since then,
weve expanded quite a bit.
Along the way, we have some great
memories. Weve made great contacts,
some great friends and have done our
best to serve the residents of every
town we cover.
Now, its time to reflect on those 10
years. This summer, well be celebrat-
ing the last decade, and we want your
input.
What has the last 10 years meant to
you? What does your life look like
today compared to what it looked like
in 2004? What does any stretch of 10
years mean in a larger sense?
Over the summer, well be compil-
ing stories, photos and more that help
us paint a picture of what 2004-2014
has meant, both to us specifically and
to the town and its residents.
If youd like to be a part of this ef-
fort, if youd like to contribute your
thoughts, your insights, your stories
and your photos, please send an email
to tronaldson@elauwitmedia.com.
Were involving our readers in our
10-year celebration because you are
the reason we started our first Sun
newspaper, you are the reason we
started more, and you are the reason
we continue to publish every week.
The last 10 years have been great for
us, and we hope they have been equal-
ly as great for you.
Help us reflect on these past 10 years
as we prepare for the next 10, and
hopefully even more.
Help us as we celebrate 10 years

Music on Main Street to change location
By KYLE CARNEY
The Sun
The Music on Main Street Concert Se-
ries has become a tradition in
Moorestown, bringing the community to-
gether for nights of summer fun. This
years series, however, will see a change of
location that is expected to enhance the ex-
perience.
While past Music on Main Street con-
certs were held at the Perkins Center for
the Arts, this year will see four of the five
scheduled shows hosted on the front lawn
of the Community House.
We want to try to bring more people
into downtown, Moorestown Business As-
sociation President Mark Morgan said.
The Community House is right in the
middle of Main Street, so were hoping
hosting the concerts there will encourage
people to walk around and interact with
the businesses.
The Department of Parks and Recre-
ation has hosted the events in the past and
will team with the MBA to put on the series
this summer, which will begin June 25 at 7
p.m.
We attempted to host two of the shows
at the Community House last year, Mor-
gan said. But both were rained out, so this
year will be our trial period to see how we
will move forward.
Morgan expects to see even larger
crowds as a result of the location change.
To do this, the MBA has contacted busi-
nesses on Main Street to further promote
the series.
Having the concerts at the Community
House is the best thing for everybody, he
said. The businesses should see more traf-
fic and people will be able to walk to the
concert or walk around before and after
the shows.
There will also be a rich variety of
music this year that should help to bring in
a more diverse crowd.
This year, we will have different genres
of music for each show, Morgan said.

Music series to run
every other Wednesday
through month of August
From acoustic to classic rock to
chamber music, we think we cov-
ered a wide enough range of
music to appeal to the whole com-
munity.
Morgan hopes this year will
bring big enough crowds to merit
a closure of Main Street for the
concerts in the future, much like
for Moorestown Day.
It would really be great if we
could get enough people out at the
shows to close down the street
and allow the people to walk
freely about downtown, he said.
Music on Main Street will run
every other Wednesday through
August. The concerts begin at 7
p.m. and are free to the public.
More than the music, Music
on Main Street is an opportunity
to get everyone together and to
further promote what

gan said.

County library will
screen documentary
The Burlington County Li-
brary will present a special
screening of the documentary
film Slavery by Another Name
on Sunday, June 29 at 2 p.m. Ad-
mission is free and registration is
not required.
This powerful 90-minute PBS
documentary originally pre-
miered at the 2012 Sundance Fes-
tival and is based on the 2009
Pulitzer-winning, best-selling
book Slavery by Another Name:
The Re-Enslavement of Black
Americans from the Civil War to
World War II by Douglas Black-
mon.
Well-known filmmaker Samuel
Pollard brings to life a new, little-
known type of slavery that took
place from 1865 to 1945 after the
Civil War ended. Featuring inter-
views with author Blackmon and
other historical scholars, the doc-
umentary also includes historical
reenactments and photographs of
that time period.
The Created Equal: Americas
Civil Rights Struggle programs,
celebrating the 150th anniversary
year of the Emancipation
Proclamation, have been made
possible through a major grant
from the National Endowment for
the Humanities, as part of its
Bridging Cultures initiative, in
partnership with the Gilder
Lehrman Institute of American
History.
The documentary will be
shown in the Burlington County
Librarys spacious new auditori-
um. The library is located at 5 Pi-
oneer Blvd., off Woodlane Road in
Westampton.
For more information, call
(609) 267-9660, or go to

All book fair proceeds will go
toward the Burlington County Li-
brary System Foundation now
being formed to help support the

sion of the new foundation will
be to raise funds for library pro-
grams, capital projects, special
events, resources, technology and
more. Anyone interested in be-
coming a foundation board mem-
ber or volunteer should call li-

for Camp Firefly
This summer, Moorestown Vis-
iting Nurse Association will pres-
ent the ninth Annual Camp Fire-
fly for grieving children at Camp
Matollionequay in Medford. This
weekend-long overnight camp
will start on the morning of Sat-
urday, Aug. 23 and conclude at the
end of the day on Sunday, Aug.
24.
The overnight camp is free and
open to children ages 7-14 who
have lost a parent, sibling or any
special person through death and
are still coping with grief.
Campers spend the weekend in
a caring, nurturing environment
with The Hospice of Moorestown
VNAs team of grief professionals
and volunteer counselors, as well
as peers who have experienced a
similar loss. Traditional camp ac-
tivities such as swimming, canoe-
ing, hiking, arts and crafts and
cookouts are combined with spe-
cialized bereavement activities
designed to help the children
overcome their grief and to cope
with the loss of their loved one. In
one particularly intense and mov-
ing activity, the children design
and build small boats containing
mementos of their loved one.
After dark, these boats are indi-
vidually candle-lit and launched
from the shores of the campsites
lake.
Applications to attend Camp
Firefly are being accepted. Camp
Firefly provides a place to re-
member lost loved ones and a
place to heal. For an application

Friends of mine had been looking for a home in Moorestown for nearly a year w/ very specific criteria. A home
walking distance fromdowntown they could customize to make their own. I knew there was a possibility the owner
might want to sell this home, so I made contact to let them know I had a potential buyer. When we through we
could see the home could suit their needs. They had the vision to see what this home had the potential to be & fell
in love with it. We began negotiations while Canton Custom Homes began pricing renovations. Everything was
worked out, and now we get to save a beautiful home on Moorestowns Main St by restoring this gemto its original

The Special Olympics torch made its way through Moorestown on June 12 on its way to Newark for the
opening ceremony. Police officers, residents and elected township officials and employees gathered at
the new Town Hall to welcome the athletes. The slogan of Special Olympics New Jersey is Genuine Jer-
sey Pride, and I can tell you, we are all extremely proud of each and every one of you, Deputy Mayor
Stacey Jordan said. For the full story, please see page 22.
Special Olympics torch
Burlington County Freehold-
ers presented the Loretta ODon-
nell Courage Award to Katie
Bednarek, a Cherokee High
School senior whose battle
against brain cancer has, in the
words of Freeholder Director
Bruce Garganio, underscored
her determination and her
strength of character and, in the
process, inspired us all.
From the time our search for
an award recipient began, all ar-
rows pointed to Katie, Garganio
said. Her battle inspired her
lacrosse teammates, then the en-
tire Cherokee school community,
and finally, the South Jersey com-
munity-at-large. Even rival
lacrosse teams wore special rib-
bons adorned with Katies initials
in her honor.
Katie is unique in many ways,
but one thing that really strikes
us is her resolve, Garganio said.
She is a young woman facing a
huge challenge, with the same
never give up mentality that has
enabled her to excel in academics
and in sports.
Garganio presented the
Courage Award to Bednarek, a
National Honor Society Student
who graduated from Cherokee
last week, during a ceremonial
meeting held at the Burlington
County Colleges Mount Holly
Center. She is the second recipi-
ent of the award.
Dozens of well-wishers were in
attendance, including Katies
mother, Denise, her father,
Joseph, her brother, Joe, family
members, friends, neighbors, as
well as her lacrosse coaches and
teammates, and Cherokee teach-
ers and staff.
Freeholders created the
Courage Award last year in honor
of the late Loretta ODonnell, a
former journalist and county em-
ployee whose fight against cancer
became a cause. She joined
support groups, wrote newsletter
articles, and engaged in a variety
of activities to uplift and encour-
age others who were in her situa-
tion.
Her husband, Bill, and son,
Michael, also attended this
evenings ceremony, and extended
best wishes to Bednarek.
Garganio told Bednarek that
we all know what you have been
facing, and we have heard time
and again that you are a very
humble person really a team
player who never likes to be the
center of attention. But this is
our way of letting you know we
are sensitive to your challenge,
we are moved by your courage,
and most of all, we wish you
well.
It was exactly nine months ago
that Bednarek was diagnosed.
Because of medical treatments,
she completed her senior year on
a modified schedule, with tutors
coming to her home to help her
complete her schoolwork. While
she was unable to compete in
lacrosse this spring, she attended
many games, and her teammates
dedicated their season to her.
By all accounts, she was the
teams lucky charm. When she
was on the sidelines, the team ex-
celled, and team members made
it clear that they wanted to win
for Katie.
Bednarek also managed to par-
ticipate in other senior year activ-
ities, including the senior prom
where she was pleasantly sur-
prised when she was chosen
prom queen.
The plaque presented to
Bednarek reads: Proudly Pre-
sented to Katie Bednarek who, in
the face of physical and mental
adversity, has demonstrated ex-
traordinary strength of charac-
ter, has emerged as an outstand-
ing role model for others, and has
touched and inspired us all.

Residents gathered with town-

Moorestowns new Town Hall
Complex on June 12. The town-

Mayor Stacey Jordan and includ-

Councilwoman Victoria Napoli-

Councilman Phil Garwood also
attended the ceremony and, along
with Jordan and Napolitano, pre-

half of the residents of the town.
The slogan of Special

the Special Olympians. Today,
you see genuine Moorestown

letes well on their way to the USA

We are proud of our commu-
nity here in Moorestown, but you
cannot be a community without
inclusion, Councilwoman Victo-
ria Napolitano said. The work
the Special Olympics does for our
special needs community by
building a more inclusive world is
remarkable and should be com-
mended.
I thank our law enforcement
here in Moorestown and around
the country that has volunteered
to participate in the torch run
and support the efforts of these
incredible men and women, Jor-
dan added. They are truly an in-
