Global Chlor-Alkali Summary
Demand Price
Caustic Soda
Asia: The Asian caustic market is mixed. Regional spot prices appear to be holding steady in response to the weak chlorine
value and anticipated rise in ECU costs due to higher electricity tariffs during the summer months. However, there are also indi-
cations that some producers are looking to offload more spot parcels over the short term in order to relieve inventory pressure.

Europe: The attention of the market is turning to the Q3 contract negotiations. A major Northwest European producer has
announced +50 per dmt, effective 1 July. In Southern Europe monthly prices are stable to slightly up. Export prices are largely
unchanged from the end of May.

United States: Caustic demand is steady with some markets reporting increases in demand. Supply constraints appear to be
easing as maintenance shutdowns and some production constraints have passed and chlorine demand is increasing, espe-
cially into vinyls. Market transactions are anticipated to increase before the end of the quarter as some buyers will attempt to
pre-buy the 1 July price announcement.

Chlorine
Europe: Operating rates in April rose by one percentage point from March to 78.7% and average daily production was 1.3%
above the level of the previous month. Production in April 2014 was 14% higher than in 2013.

United States: Chlorine operating rates rose sharply in May following a very subdued Q1 and early Q2. The rise reflects chlo-
rine demand about to reach its seasonal peak into water treatment as well as PVC demand which is recovering from a slow
start in early 2014.

Vinyls*
Asia: There appears to be further firming in PVC prices as producers nominate their offers for July delivery. However, this
remains confined mostly to the Indian market rather than across Asia. Suppliers continue to face an uphill task in implementing
higher prices in China and Southeast Asia as a result of the stiff market competition and weak demand in both of these regions.

Europe: Conditions in the PVC market remain very balanced. Producers are operating smoothly on a fairly high level. Underly-
ing demand is quite healthy, though it is growing at a slower rate than before. Supply-side inventories appear higher than pro-
ducers would like, which may continue to limit their pricing power this month. Export business is better, though it is still mar-
ginal. Imports are limited.

United States: Domestic PVC demand is healthy and producers indicate it has picked up compared to the beginning of the
month. During May, industry statistics show a monthly increase of 4.5% in domestic demand. Average operating rates reached
88% in May.

KOH
United States: KOH inventories are low for this time of year and the agriculture season is just starting. KOH price increase
announcements have been made and it looks like these have a good chance of being implemented.

HCl
United States: Hydrochloric acid demand is robust but supply is contracting due to a series of by-product outages. There is
also more anhydrous moving over pipelines into vinyl production and less wet acid is moving into the merchant market. Prices
are expected to rise 1 July.
