PREFACE
The most challengingtask before an astrologer is to correctly
timeanevent. Forthis SageParasarahas givenover40 dasasystems.
Of these certain are applicable to all the horoscopes i.e. they are
universal. Others areconditional. That is, they canbeappliedonly if
certainconditions canbe fulfilled.
The most important universal dasas are Vimshottari, Yogini
andKalachakradasa. Thesethreearealsothemostpopular. Vimshottari
dasais themost popular andthebest. Whenappliedwith Yogini and
Kalchakra dasa and also annual chart nearly hundred percent correct
resultscanbegiven.
Besides universal dasas Sage Parasara has also given nine
conditional dasas. Notmuch research hadbeendoneonthese. I started
workingonthesearoundfiveyears back although foractual predictive
work I havemostly reliedonVimshottari, Yogini, Kalachakraandthe
annual horoscope. TheseI havecombinedwith PrasnaandSwarauday
techniques. I haveusually cast conditional dasas only indifficult cases
tobehundredpercent sureabout anevent.
My basic purpose for writingthis book is to popularise their
usesothatmoreresearch canbedoneonthesefascinatingdasasystems.
My endeavours will be rewardedifdeeper insight is gainedintotheir

CHAPTER 1
CONDITIONAL DASAS-MEANING AND
IMPORTANCE
Themost challengingtask foranastrologeristhetimingofevents.
In Hindu or vedic astrology we have some unique dasa systems. The
most important oftheseis Vimshottari Dasa. It is themost widely used
dasa system and can help us time events very precisely. It is also a
universal dasawhich isapplicabletoallthehoroscopes. BesidesVimshottari
SageParasarais saidtohavediscussedmorethan40 otherdasasystems.
Thesemay beplanetary DasasorsignDasas. Howeverthemostimportant
ofthesedasas arethosebasedonNakshatraoccupiedby Moonat birth.
Therefore, thesearealsocalledNakshatraDasas.
Amongst Nakshatra Dasas, three are most important. Theseare
universal dasas andcanbeappliedtoany horoscope :
(1) VinishottariDasa : Thisisthemost widely useddasasystem.
Its accuracy is amazing. Thereaders ofthis book, ofcourse, must be
familiar with this Dasa System. Its modus operandi is discussed in
Chapter2.
(2) Yogini Dasa : Inthis dasa system mecompletecycle of
36 years dividedbetween8 Ybginis. These8 Yogini, theirrulers and
thenumberofyears allottedtothem are :
S.No.
Yogini Ruler No. ofYears General Results

2.

This dasa is very popular among astrologers in hilly areas of
North India. Very accurate predictions can be made by using this
dasa-system. At aglanceanastrologercanseetheperiodsofprosperity

(3) Kalachakra Dasa System : Many classical writers have
described this as emperor amongst all dasa systems. Many features
such as Moon's Navamsa, Paramayus, DehaandJeevaRasi, Gatis or
jumps etc. makethis avery uniquedasasystem.
Yogini and Kalachakra Dasa systems offer us an insight into a
horoscope which evenVimshottari at times is not able tooffer. Both
thesedasa systems arediscussedindetail inmy book 'YOGINI AND
KALACHAKRA DASAS'.
Conditional Dasas
Besides the above Sage Parasara has also discussed certain
conditional dasas. Theseare not universal dasas andareapplicableto
only thosehoroscopeswhich fulfill certainconditions. Theseconditional
dasa systems are :
(1) Dwisaptati SamaDasa : Theconditions forthis dasaarethat
ascendant lord should be in the 7th house or the 7th lord is in the
ascendant. The dasas are in the order ofthe week days i.e. Sun,
Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturnandlastly Rahu. Ketu
has noplace inthis dasa system. Each dasa is of9 years andtotal of
onecycle ofDasa is of72 years. Count from Moolatothe birth star.
Divide it by eight. Count remainder in order ofweek days starting
fbom Suntofinddasaoperatingat birth. RemainderZerowill givethe
openingDasaofRahu.
This dasais discussedindetail inchapter3.
(2) Shastihayani Dasa : This dasa is to be used when Sun is
posited in the ascendant. The total cycle is of60 years. Start fbom
Ashwini. First take three Nakshatras andthentake four Nakshatras.
There are twogroups. Keep formingsuch groups. These groups give
balance ofDasas ofJupiter (10 Years); Sun (10 Years); Mars (10
Years); Moon(6 Years); Mercury (6 Years); Venus (6 Years); Saturn
(6 Years) andRahu (6 Years).
This system is discussedindetail inChapter 11.
(3) Shat-Trimshati SamaDasa : This dasais tobeusedwhen :
(a) Birth is duringtheday time andascendant falls inthebora
ofSun. Or
(b) Birth is during the night time and ascendant falls in the
boraofMoon.
In any ofthe above cases Shat-Trimshati Sama Dasa can be
gainfully used.

three-Jupiter, four-Mars, five-Mercury, six-Saturn, seven-Venus, and
eight as remainder gives the openingdasaofRahu.
This dasa system is discussedindetail inChapter4.
(4) Dwadashottari Dasa : This dasais usedfor those nativities
whose ascendant falls in Navamsa of Venus. That is, the Navamsa
ascendant shouldbeeitherTaurus orLibra. Count from JamnaNakshatra
to Revati. Divide the figureby 8. Theremainder indicates theplanet
whose dasaoperates at birth. Oneas remaindermeans Sun, twomeans
Jupiter, three ketu, four Mercury, five Rahu, six Mars, seven Saturn
andeight Moon. Thereaders will notice that Venus is not considered
in this Dasa System. The dasaperiods allocated to theplanets are 7,
9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19 and21 years respectively. Thetotal durationof
onecycleofdwadashottari dasais 112 years.
This dasasystem is discussedinChapter 5.
(5) Chaturashiti Sama Dasa : This dasa is to be applied to
thosenativities where 10th lordis placedinthe 10th house. Count from
Swati toJanmaNakshatra. Dividethefigureby seven. Oneas remainders
gives Sun, twoMoon, threeMars, fourMercury, fiveJupiter, six Venus
and seven gives Saturn as openingdasa operatingat birth. Each planet
has a dasa period of twelve years. The total duration of one cycle of
Chaturashiti SamaDasais 84 years. Thereaders will noticethat thedasa
periods areinthesameorderas week day lords.
This dasais discussedinChapter6.
(6) ShatabdikaDasa : This dasais tobeappliedtothosenativities
who have a Vargottamaascendant. That is, the Rasi-Cflart ascendant
and the Navamsa ascendant are the same. Count the number of
Nakshatras from Revati to JamnaNakshatra anddivide the figure by
seven. Theremainder gives the opening dasa at birth in the order of
Sun, Moon, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Mars and Saturn. The period
allottedtotheseplanets are5, 5, 10, 10, 20, 20and30 years respectively.
The total durationofonecycleis 100 years.
This dasais discussedinChapter 7.
(7) Shadsottari Dasa : This dasais tobeappliedtothosenativities
whosebirth is in KrishnaPaksha(i.e. Moonis waning) andascendant
is in the Hora of Moon or birth is in Shukla Paksha (i.e. Moon is
waxing) andthe ascendant falls intheHoraofSun. Count from Pushya

to the Janma Nakshatra and divide the figure by 8. The remainder
indicates planet whose dasa will operate at birth. One as remainder
means Sun, twoMars, threeJupiter, four Saturn, fiveKetu, six Moon,
sevenMercury andeight Venus. Thedurationofplanets is as follows
: Sun11 years. Mars 12 years, Jupiter 13 years, Saturn 14 years, Ketu
15 years. Moon 16 years. Mercury 17 years andVenus 18 years. The
total dasacycleis 116 years.
This is discussedinChapter 8.
(8) PanchottariDasa: Thisdasaistobeappliedtothosenativities
whohaveCancerascendant andDwadasamsaascendant is alsoCancer.
This is a dasa which will only apply in a very rare case. That is
ascendant ofthe native falls between Cancer 0 and Cancer 2
o
30'. I
have rarely come across cases where this dasa becomes applicable.
Count from Anuradha to birth (Janma) Nakshatra. Divide the figure
by seven. The remainder indicates the dasa lord inthe order ofSun,
Mercry, Saturn, Mars, Venus, Moon and Jupiter. The dasa periods
allocatedtotheseplanets are 12 years, 13 years, 14 years, 15 years,
16 years, 17 years and 18 years respectively. Total dasa cycle is of
105 years.
This is discussedinChapter9.
(9) Ashtottari Dasa : Sage Parasara says ifRahu is not in the
ascendant and is in an angle or trine to the ascendant lord, some
learneds adopt Ashtottari Dasa. Hefurtheronstates that:
"Ifthe birth is during day time duringKrishna Pakshaor ifthe
birth is duringthe night time during Shukla Paksha, Ashtottari dasa
shouldbeapplied".
I am oftheopinionthat only under secondcondition shouldwe
apply Ashtottari dasa. Ashtottari dasais calculatedinadifferent manner
thanVimshottari dasa. The method is similar to Shashtihayani Dasa.
Thetotal Dasacycleis of 108 years.
This dasasystem has beendiscussedinChapter 10.

HOW TO JUDGE A NAKSHATRA DASA
The basic thrust ofthis book is ontimingevents usingdifferent
nakshatra dasas. I have discussed inthis book nine nakshatra based
conditional dasas. Therules for interpretingthesearemoreorless the
same as those for interpreting Vimshottari dasa. Vimshottari dasa is
themost accurateofall thedasa systems. Whenappliedwith Yogini
dasa, Kalachakara dasa and the annual chart nearly hundred percent
correctpredictions canbegiven.
Conditional dasas are little exploreddasa systems. I have tried
them onandoffover thelast five or six years. My basic purpose for
writingthis book is togeneratemoreinterest inthesedasasystems so
that moreresearch canbecarriedout onthesedasasystems.
Inthis chapterI am discussingthebasics ofHindu astrology and
also the rules for interpreting Vimshottari dasa. These rules can be
appliedtoall thenineconditional dasas discussedinthis book.
BASICSOF HINDU ASTROLOGY
Accordingto sage Parasara, LordVishnu incarnated himself as
the nine planets. These are the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter,
Venus, Saturn, Rahu andKetu.
The Hindu Sages dividedthe zodiac of360 degrees intotwelve
signs of 30 degrees each. These twelve signs are ruled by seven
planets from Sun to Saturn. The twelve signs and the planets ruling
them aregivenbelow :

of 180 degrees of Sun and Moon is called Full Moon (Purnamasi)

calleddark half or Krishna Paksha. The followingare the names of
Tithies.

Bhadra 2, 7, 12
Jaya 3, 8, 13
Rikta 4, 9, 14
Pooma 5, 10, 15
Tithi is alunarday, therefore, see thedegrees Moonhas traversed

Tithi. Takeanexample with MooninAquarius at 19 degrees and Sim
in Scorpioat 5 degrees. Thenthedifference(319

dividedby 12 gives 7 quotient and 8 as remainder. ThereforeTithi is
7+1 = 8th of ShuklaPaksh (becauseMoonis aheadof Sun).
Week days : Sunday is governedby Sun. Moonrules Monday.
Mars ruledTuesday, Mercury rules Wednesday, JupiterruledThursday,
Venus rules Friday, Saturn rules Saturday.
As per Hindus a day begins at Sunrise and ends at Sunrise the
next day. Thus theHindu day does not changeat midnight andchanges
only at Sunrise.
From Sunrise to Sunset it is day time and birth during this time
is day birth. From Sunset to Sunrise it is night time and birth during
this timeis night birth.
ThePlanets, theirQualities, Elements andNature. Weareall
awarethat therearenineplanets orgraharecognisedinVedic astrology.
These are Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu
andKetu.
Like everything else in the universe, the planets also evolve
from the 5 tatwas or the five elements. These are Earth, Air, Water,
Fire andEther.
As per theHindu Scriptures theelement predominant inaplanet
is as follows :
Earth ! Mercury
Air ; SaturnandRahu
Water : MoonandVenus
Fire : SunandMars (andKetu also)
Ether ; Jupiter
9 Conditional DasasofSageParasara
Human beings acquire the temperament of the most powerful
planet at birth and also ofplanets influencingthe ascendant. It is the
influenceofvarious tatwas or elements that determines thepersonality
of a human being. These tatwas have great importance in vedic
philosophy. I havediscussedthem at somelength inmy various books.
Below I am describingthebasic effect oftheseelements :
When the ether element is powerful then the person is clever
andcreative. Heis agoodoratorandwill alwaysacquireencyclopaedic
knowledge of the subject that interests them. These natives make
gooddiplomats, they arevery intelligent, they likemakinghugeplans
and are generally successful at them. They are ofa long stature and
haveatendency ofputtingonweight aftertheageof32 years.
When fiery temperament is predominant then the native
is confident, restless, proud and arrogant. He is of a very sharp
intellect and fair complexion. When Sun and Mars are predominant,
the native likes to be in a position of authority and are seldom
happy at workingbelow someone. Fiery temperament makes aperson
daring and adventurous. Their face and physique exhibit a glowing
aura.
When earthy temperament is predominant then the native is
childlike. His enthusiasm is like that ofa small kid andhe is full of
energy. He is fond ofluxuries, comforts and is always happy. He is
very learned. His communication skills are amazing. Such a native
always has his nails, hair and teeth clean. His room andalmirah are
always clean. Heis sowell dressedas ifright out ofafashionmagazine.
Earthy temperament makes one hardworking, persevering and gives
singlemindeddevotion.
When watery element (Moon and Venus) gains predominance
then the native likes socialising, is gregarious, can take burden of
difficult jobs, are soft spoken, love art and music and have many
friends. Theirbody is slender, haverobust health, arevery goodlooking
andhaveavery intuitivebrain.
Airy element in predominance makes the native careless,
absentminded, shabby and they remain dirty. Their power of
comprehension is weak, they think too much and have tendency of
getting depressed. They are sorrowful and indulge in self pity. They
haveacharitabledisposition, but areshorttempered, fondoftravelling,
have a lean physique and live more in the mental world than t ie
physical.

InHindu orVedic astrology thefollowingshouldbestudied:
(i) Signpositionas inRasi-Chart.
(ii) Housepositionas inChalit Chakra.
Thefolowingpoints shouldberememberedconcerningtheChalit

(1) The lordofa house is thelordofthe sign whereits bhava-
madhya (Housemiddle) falls, for instance, inourexamplecasebhava
madhya ofthetenth house is Scorpio. Therefore, actual tenth lord is
Mars (andnot Venusas seeninRasi-Chart).
(2) Thefunctional malefics andbenefics for anativity is always
reckonedfrom theRasi-chart. for example, forasaggitarius ascendant
fifth andsixth housebhavamadhyais inTaums. Here, Venus will not
become abenefic by owningthe 5th house. It remains amalefic for
saggitarius nativity as it owns 6th and 11 th houses intheRasi-Chart.
This isthecorrect Hindu way.
(3) InHindu astrology Rasi-Chart has its ownimportance. But it
is studiedkeepinghousepositions asperchalit chakra, inmind. Suppose

The 27 Nakshatras or Constellations
In Hindu asrology great importance is attatched to the 27
Nakshatras. Nakshatra extends upto 13

by Mooonat birth is calledtheJanmaNakshatra. The 27 Nakshatras
are giveninTable 2.1. Thetable also gives the startingdasa lordat
birth and number of years alloted to each planet as per vimshottari
dasa. For method to calculate Vimshottari dasa readers can refer to
any standardbook onthesubject.
The 27 Nakshatras are divided into 9 groups of3 Nakshatras
each. These nine groups and the likely effect ofaplanet occupying
them is given below. Here 1 stands for Janma Nakshatra, 2 for the

Here, Janma Nakshatra is Ashwini. Therefore, Ashwini, Magha

The planets give malefic and benefic results depending upon

then the native will experience mixed results. Accordingly, a house

Prosperity ofaHouse : A houseprospers under thefollowing
conditions :
(1) The lord ofthe house is exalted in Rasi or Navamsa charts.
If the exalted planet is posited in the 6th, 8th or the 12th house it
becomes weak. If a debilitated planet is exalted in the navamsa it
gives goodeffects.
(2) A planet in own house in Rasi-Chart or Navamsa-Chart

(5) A housewill prosperifits lordis Vargottama. That is, it is in

If Mercury is weak and afflicted then the native will lack
confidence, remain nervous and have skin diseases. There may be
break in education. The native will be betrayed by close associates
andwill distrust every one. Thenative will beinfinancial difficulties

Ketu : IfKetu is well placedina Kendra, Trikonaor the 11th

confidence of his seniors and gain much from them. There will be

If Ketu is afflicted, weak and in 2nd, 8th or 12th house or is

TheNakshatraLordship
Whileanalysingconditinal dasasI havefrequently usedtheconcept
of Nakshatra lordships. There is a great deal of confusion over this
matterandthereaders areadvisedtogothrough thesubtlepoint I am
tryingtoclarify very carefully.
What are considered to be Nakshatra lords are actually dasa
lords and not Nakshatra lord. Ketu does not ownAshwini. It is the
dasalordofAshwini undertheVimshottari dasasystem. InDwadasottari
dasa system alsoAshwini's dasa lord is Ketu. But under Pahchottari
dasa system thedasalordofAshwini is Venus. Ifaplanet say 'A' is
situatedinAries inAshwini Nakshatrait wil alsogiveresults ofKetu
duringits dasaifweareseeingVimshottari dasa. But ifwearestudying
Panchottari dasathe planet 'A' duringits dasa period will also give
theresultsofplanet Venus.
31 Conditional DasasofSageParasara
Now suppose Venus is extremely weak. But planet 'A' does
notbecomeweak justbecauseitsNakshatradispositiorunderPanchottari
dasa system is weak. It will only give the effects ofVenus also. Tills
is because these are only dasa lords and not Nakshatra lords. 1 hope
the readers have understood the subtle point 1 have tried to explain
above.
Note : Hieresultsaplanet will giveofitsNakshatradispositorships
is only secondary totheresults it gives duetoitsownposition.
DIVISIONAL CHARTS
One ofthe secrets for correct interpretationofa horoscopeis to
correctly cast and study adivisional chart. While studyingadivisional

(1) Divisional charts should always be studed along with the

(6) Ifthe sub period lord is inthe 6th, 8th or 12th house from

(7) Ifaplanet which is very weak inthenatal chart, (becombust,

(8) IfRaliu orKetu occupy aKendraorTrikonaandareconnected

(9) If a planet is posited in 6th, 8th, or 12th house it gives
adverse results. But lord of 6th house in 6, 8 or 12 gives a Sarala
Yoga. This makes anativeprosperous andlonglived. Lordofthe 12th
house in 6, 8 or 12 gives Vimala Yoga. This helps the native in
accumulatingwealth.

we canapply Dwisaptati SamaDasa.
Now, let us calculate the balance ofDwisaptati Sama Dasa at

Dwisaplali SamaDasa 38
Step 1. Find theplanet whose dasa will operate at birth. In our
illustrationJarunaNakshatrais Shravana. From Table 3.1 we seethat
ifJamnaNakshatrais Shravanatheopeningdasa will beofMercury.
Step 2. See the distance yet to be traversed by Moon in the

= 4 years 4 months 7 days.
Thus, the balance ofMercury Dwisaptati Sama Dasa at birth
is 4Y-4M-7D.
Note : (1) We arrived at figure 4.35 years above. Therefore
balance is 4 years and (0.35 x 360 days). Therefore, we get 4 years
and 127 days. The 127 days mean4 months and7 days.
(2) Wecan also useTable 3.3 for findingtheplanet whosedasa

Calculation ofSub-periods
Step 1. The duration ofeach planet is 9 years. Therefore each

Rahu represents Ketu also, which is indegree conjunctionwith

details on calculating life span the readers can refer to my book on
'Longevity'. The sub-period was of Saturn which is placed in a
maraksthana. Saturnalso afflicts the degree combinahonofSun and
Ketu.
If we look at the Nakshatra positions, Rahu under Dwisaptati
Sama Dasa will be inownNakshatra. Rahu represents Ketu also as
Ketu has noperiodunderthis dasasystem. Saturnis intheNakshatra
ofSunasper' this system. Therefore, asperNakshatralordships (under

event is more clear from the conditional dasa i.e. Dwisaptati Sama

In the above manner we can calculate the future major periods
also. The sub-periods can also be calculated in theusual manner, with
thehelp of Table4.2.
InterpretingShat-Trimsha Sama Dasa
The basic rules forjugding the conditional dasas is the same as
those employed for Vimshottari dasa.
Case-History : The native of Illustration 1 got married during
the Vimshottari dasa major period of Sun and the sub-period ofMars.
As per shat-Trimsha Sama dasa the major period was of Venus and
the sub periodwas of Mars.
Analysis : Wenoticethat the sub-period'inboth thedasa systems
was of Mars. Mars is the Yogakaraka and exalted in the seventh
house. No doubt, the native got married during its period. As per
Vimshottari the major period was of 2nd (family) lord Sun posited
with 7th lord Saturn. As per Shat-Trimsha Sama dasathe major period
was of Venus, the natural significator of marriage.
If we look at Nakshatra positions the major period under Shat-
Trimsha Sama dasa was of Venus which is in Anuradha which is
ruled by Venus under this dasa system. Therefore, it is very powerful
to give marriage. The major period as per Vimshottari was of Sun
placed in Swati ruledby Ralm under vimshottari dasa system. Ralm is
not directly connected with marriage in any way. But Sun as already
seen is qualified to give marriage.
Mars is in Shravana whose dasa lord as per both the systems is
Moon. Moon is with Venus and can always give marriage. But it is
basically the strong position of Mars in the seventh house which
brought about the event duringits sub-periodinboth thedasa systems.

Conditional Dasas of Sage Parasara
Case-History : The native was assassinated in November, 1963
during the Vimshottari dasa major period of Jupiter and the sub-
period ofKetu.
As per Shat Trimsha Sama Dasa the major period ofMars and
the sub-period ofRahu.
Analysis : As per Vimshottari dasa the major period was ofJupiter
amaraka (seventh lord) andalsolordofthe 22nd Drekkana. As per Shat-
Trimsha Sama the major period was of Mars, lord ofthe 3rd and 8th
which afflicts very closely the ascendant lord Mercury. This explains the
assassination. Mars and Mercury are inthe 8th house and in the 22nd
Drekkana. The third drekkana ofAries inwhich the 22nd Drekkana falls
is ruledby Jupiterand is calledAyudha Drekkana. This causes violent
death specially ifoccupiedby Mars as inourpresent case study.
The point which readers should note that inboth the dasa systems
the focus is on the 22nd drekkana. Under Vimshottari dasa the major
period was of lord ofthe 22nd drekkana. Under Shat-Trimsha Sama
dasa the major period was ofthe planet posited in the 22nd Drekkana,
that is, ofviolent Mars.

Let us study somelifeevents ofthe native :
Event 1 : Fatherofthenativepassed away on Febraary 6. 1976
The Sun is afflicted by Saturn and Mars. Ninth lord is with Ketu
while ninth house is hemmedbetweenmaiefics. InDwadasamsa Chart,
the ascendant lord Mars is debilitated in the ninth house. These factors
show early loss of father.
Vimshottari : Major period was of Jupiter which is lord of the
seventh house from the 9th house and 2nd house from the Sun. It is
also a maraka (2nd lord) in the Dwadasamsa Chart Sub-period was of
Venus which is 7th lord from Sun and second lord from the 9th
house.
Shat Trimsa Sama Dasa : The father of the native died
during themajor period of ninth lord Mercury which is afflicted in the
second from the ninth house. It is also the 2nd lord from Sun and
Dwadasamsa ascendant. Sub period was of Mars which as already
seen is the ascendant lord of Dwadasamsa Chart and is debilitated in
the ninth house.
Nakshatra Consideration : Under Vimshottari dasa system both
Jupiter and Venus are in Saturn's Nakshatra. Saturn is posited in
fourth from Sun showing death due to heart attack. It also afflicts
Sun Under Shat Trimsa Sama dasa the major period was of Mercury
which also is in the Nakshatra of Saturn
Thus we see that the dasa lordship of Nakshatras under different
dasa systems helps in arriving at the correct conclusion.
Event 2 : Thenative got marriedin November 1991.
53 Conditional Dasas oi Sage Parasara
Vimshottari dasa : The major period was of 2nd lord (farruh )
Saturn which is with 7th lord Moon It is in Nakshatra of Jupitet
under this system. Jupiter is exalted in the seventh house. Sub-period
was of natural significator of Venus.
Shat Trimsa Sama Dasa : The major period was of Rahu and
the sub-period was of Mercury. Mercury is m the 7th house from the
dasa lord. Rahu will essentially give results of dispositor Mars which
is in the 7th from the Moon. Mercury is in Nakshatra of Sun under
this system Sun is in own Navamsa and Navamsa ascendant

InterpretingDwadashottari Dasa
Let us now discuss few events inthelifeofabovenativity tosee
thevalidity ofDwadashottari Dasasystem.
Case-History : Thenative, anarmy officer, met with anaccident
onJanuary 19, 1991 andwas consequently invalidatedout ofservice
onJune7, 1992.
Vimshottari Dasa : The nativemet with anaccident duringthe
major period of Rahu and the sub-period of Venus. Rahu is in the
twelfth house. It is aspectedby malefic Mars. The sub-periodwas of
Venus placedindebilitationinthefourth house.
57 Conditional Dasas ofSageParasara
The nativelost hisjob duringthemajor periodofRahu andthe
sub periodofSun. Sunis positedinthethirdhouse andis debilitated
inNavamsa. Sunifafflictedby Saturnandweak alwayscauseslossof
position.
Dwadashottari Dasa
The native was under the major periodof Saturn which afflicts
the weak Sun. The sub-period was ofMars when both the adverse
events took place. The Mars is inthe house ofdebilitatedVenus. It
afflicts Moon in the 8th house causing much mental agony to the
native.
As per Dwadashottari Dasa system the dasa lordof Nakshatra
occupied by major period lord Saturn is Moon. Moon is inthe 8th
house andafflictedby Mars. ThedasalordofNakshatraoccupiedby
sub-periodlordMars is Rahu. Rahu is inthe twelfth house oflosses
afflictedby Mars.
Thenext major periodwhich startedfrom November, 1992 is of
Moon which cannot give much relieftothe native being afflicted in
the8th house.
Importantpoint toberemembered
Venus does not have a period allocated under this system, it
gives its results through its dispositor andtheplanets occupying its
houses. Intheaboveexamplethesub-periodlordMars is inthehouse
ofVenus. Its Nakshatradispositor Rahu is alsointhe signownedby
Venus. Thus thenativefelt all theadverseaffects ofdebilitatedVenus
duringthesub periodofMars.

61 Conditional DasasofSageParasara
The native had the accident when she was running the major
periodofMarsandthesub-periodofMercury undertheDwadashottari
dasa system. Mercury is the 8th lord. The readers will notice that
under Vimshottari dasa system the sub-period was of Moon which
shifts to 8th house in Chalit Chakra. Therefore, in both the systems
thefocuswasontheeighth house.
Alsothefollowingshouldberemembered :
(1) Mars and Mercury are both in the eighth house from the
MoonSign.
(2) Mars and Mercury are in Taurus, a sign ruled by Venus.
Therefore, they will also give results ofVenus (becauseVenus does

InterpretingChatnrashiti SantaDasa
The usual rules for interpreting a Nakshatra dasa should be
remembered while interpreting Chatnrashiti Sama Dasa Besides, we
should remember that Rahu and ketu will give their effects through
their signdispositer.
Let us now study anevent inthelifeoftheabovenative.
CaseHistory : ThenativediedduringJuly, 1994 duetoMalaria.
Analysis : The following points are worth noting in this
horoscope :
(1) Both theluminaries areafflictedinthe8th house.
(2) Moon is in exact degree conjunction with Ketu and is also
combust.
Chaturashiti SamaDasa 66
(3) Sun is the 8th lordandalsothe lordof22nddrekkana. It is
afflictedby Mars andKetu.
(4) Ascendant lordis debilitated.
Theabove afflictions restrictedthe life spanofnativetoAlpaya
or short life.
Vimshottari Dasa : The native died during Sun major period
andRahu sub-period. Wenotice :
(1) Sunis lordofthe8th houseandalsoof22ndDrekkana. It is
afflictedby Ketu andMars.
(2) Sub-periodlordRahu is inthesecondhouseandits dispositor
is debilitated.
(3) Rahu is indegreeoppositiontoMoon.
Theabovepoints maketheevent very clear.
Chaturashiti SamaDasa : ThenativediedduringMercury major
periodandthe sub-periodofSun. Thefollowingshouldbenoted:
(1) Mercury is thelordof64th Navamsafrom Moon. Mercury is
the8th lordinNavamsaChart andis positedintheascendant.
(2) Thesub periodlordSun, as already seen, is theafflictedlord
of8th houseand22ndDrekkana.
(3) In Chaturashiti Sama Dasa nodes give results through their
dispositor. Inour case study Sunis thedispositor ofKetu. Ketu is in
degree conjunction with Moon in the 8th house, thus restrictingthe
lifespan. Infact, Ketu afflicts both theluminaries.
Thus, we see how clear the event is from Chaturashiti Sama
Dasa. Infact, we see that Moon a watery planet is conjunct Ketu a
planet which is fiery likeMars. ThenativediedbecauseofMalaria(a
watery disease) andhigh fever(Ketu inafiery sign).

ShatabdikaDasa is interpreted in the usual manner as the other
Nakshatra dasas. Rahu and Ketu give their results through their Sign
andNakshatradispositor.
Let us now discuss anevent from thelife ofour examplecase :
Case History : The native was shot dead during November,
1963.
Analysis : The native was assassinated during the major period
ofSaturn andthe sub-periodofJupiter. Wenoticethefollowingpoints
(1) Saturnis lordofthesixth houseintheeleventh. Its dispositor
is weak beinginthe twelfth houseanddebilitatedinNavamsa. Saturn
itselfis inthe twelfth houseinNavamsaChart.
(2) Jupiter is of zero degrees and debilitated inNavamsa Chart.
Therefore, it is the weakest planet in the horoscope. Life can always

(3) Beinglordofthe22ndDrekkanaJupiter becomes aMarakesh.
Twenty second Drekkana is occupied by violent Mars in close

This shows aviolent end.
(4) Saturn is in Pushya which in this dasa system is ruled by

InterpretingShadsottari Dasa
Shadsottari dasa is tobe interpreted inthe same manner as the
other Nakshatra dasas. Rahu does not have any major period in the
dasasystem. It gives itsresultsthrough its signandNakshatradispositor.
Let us now seetwomajorevents inthelifeofthenativetostudy
thevalidity ofShadsottari dasa system.
Event 1 : Thenativelost his fatheronFebruary 6, 1976.
As per Shadsottari dasathenativewas underthemajorperiodof
Mars and the sub period of Venus, when he lost his father. Major
periodlordMars afflicts Sun-thesignificator offather. It is lordofthe
Dwadasamsaascendant andis debilitatedinthe9th house. Sub period
lordVenus is the lordof7th house from Sun and secondhouse from
the9th house. It is indeep combustionanddebilitatedNavamsa. Thus
Venus is very weak andgavenativeamajor set back andtragic event
ofhis life. Venus is inAnuradhawhich as perthis system is ruledby
Mars andthis clearly pinpoints theevent.
Event 2 : ThenativegotmarriedinNovember, 1991.
As per Shadsottari dasathenativewas underthemajorperiodof
Jupiter andthe sub periodofMars. Major periodlordJupiter is well
placedintheseventh house. Sub-periodlordMars is inthe7th house
from Moon. It aspectsthe7th lord. It is inNakshatra(as perShadsottari
dasa system) of Saturnwhich is the second (family) lordand is well
placedwith 7th lordMoonclearly showingthatthenativegot married
duringthisperiod.

ASHTOTTARIDASA

(a) Birth inKrishnaPakshaduringday time;
or(b) Birth inShuklaPakshaduringnighttime.
DasaLords
The methodofcalculatingAshtottari Dasa is different than the
method for calculating Vimshottari dasa and other conditional dasas
discussedinChapters 3 to9. Table 10.1 and 10.2 help us infinding
the planet whosedasaoperates at birth.

Notes : (1) Ketu has not been allocated a dasa period in this
dasasystem.
(2) Thereis someconfusionas tothecorrect dasalords. Krittika
adi andArdraadi arethetwo systems prevailent. But astudy ofsage
Parasara's works show that it is only the Ardra adi is the correct
method. That is, nakshatras Ardra toAslesha are ruled by Sun. The
readers areadvisedtofollow only this method.
Different conditions forapplyingAshtottari Dasa
Different conditions for applying Ashotottari dasa have been
givenby various authors. SageParasarasays that somescholars areof
Ashtottari Dasa 86
theview that Ashtottari dasais tobeappliedwhen :
"Rahu not beingin ascendant, is in any other Kendra (angle) or
trikona (trine) to thelordofthe ascendant (lagnesh)."
But sage Parasara himself seems to favour only the condition
discussedinthis book, i.e.
"Whenit is day birth in KrishnaPakshaor night birth in Shukla
Paksha."
SageMansagar in his excellent treatise 'Mansagari Paddhati' is
ofthefollowingopinion :
"Ifbirth is in ShuklaPakshathenAshtottari dasa shouldbeused
andifinKrishnaPakshathen Vimshottari dasa shouldbeused."
But experiencehas shown that Vimshottari dasais universal and
canbe applied to any horoscope. The correct condition for Ashtottari
dasa is the one which is given in the beginning of this chapter. This
canbe seenafterapplyingAshtottari dasato any numberofhoroscopes.
CalculationofBalanceofDasa
Calculation of balance of Ashtottari dasa is done in a different
manner than Vimshottari dasa. In this system Nakshatras Ardra to
Aslesha (6 to9) areruledby Sun. That is atotal of53

by Sun. Similarly, the degrees governed by all the planets are as

as the other Nakshatra Dasas. Let us study anevent from the life of

Mercury is also afflicted inthe ascendant by three malefics. All this
factors show heart trouble.
Vimshottari Dasa : The native was under the major period of
Saturn and the sub period of Mercury. Both the planets afflict Sun.
