How to install and configure the NX 8.5 License Server

Prior to installing the NX 8.5 License server, you will need to save your license file to a
permanent location.

Once you have the license saved to a permanent location, you will may need to edit the
license file to identify the correct server host id.
First, right click on your license file and select edit. Then, where it says this_host enter the
host id of your server (ex: User-PC or User-Laptop). If you dont know your machines host
id, it can be found by clicking on system in the control panel. There will be a field named
Computer Name followed by your machines host id (the host id may also be referred to as
the host name or computer name). Or, you can type whoami into a command prompt.



Be sure to save your configured license file.

Now you are ready to install the NX 8.5 License Server.

First: Insert the NX 8.5 Base & Options DVD, then launch the installer by selecting Install
License Server on the NX 8.5 splash screen

Alternatively, you could navigate to the SPLMLicenseServer_v5.3.1.exe located in the root
directory of your NX 8.5 install media (some machine security configurations may require
you launch the installer using the Run as administrator option).




After an initial splash screen, on which there is nothing to do but select next, you will be
asked where you would like to install your Siemens PLM License Server. If you noticed the
installer skip the Advanced bullet on the bulleted list to the left of the installer, this is
normal.

directory, select next.

On this screen you are asked to provide a License file location. We recommend you keep
your license in a permanent location, like the documents folder of the user directory.
The installer cannot continue without a valid License file.

disk space required to complete the install.



Once you have ensured the installer is properly configured, select install.

To ensure your license server is running properly, launch the LMTools application under
Siemens PLM License Server in your start menu.




This is the LMTOOLS application. The LMTOOLS application allows you to configure your
server, start/stop your server, run server diagnostics, and perform server status enquiries.

To check or change the configuration of your Siemens PLM License server, click the Config
Services Tab



Verify the path to the license file.

The lmgrd.exe and debug log file are both located in the PLM License Server folder in the
Siemens directory (by default: in Program Files folder on the C drive).

If you make changes to the service configuration, then when youre finished be sure to click
Save Service.

Whenever you make changes to your license server configuration, you should restart the
license service and re-read the license file. To restart the license service click on the
start/stop/reread tab.



Select the Force Server Shutdown box and click stop. You should notice a message at the
bottom of the utility that will indicate when the server has been successfully stopped. When
it has, click Start Server. Once the server has restarted, click the ReRead License File
button.

If the LMTools application fails to either stop or start the license service, you can restart the
service using the Services utility in the Administrative Tools section of the Windows Control
Panel. (You can also type services in the search bar on your start menu).



In the services utility, scroll to the service named Siemens PLM License Server and select
it. You can either restart the service by clicking Restart the service; or by right clicking the
service, selecting properties, and then using the Service Status buttons to Stop and then
Start the service.

Once you have restarted your license service, and reread the license file, you are ready to
ensure your license server is running properly.

To ensure your license server is running properly, click the Server Status tab.

Click the Perform Status Enquiry button, and then scroll through the report until you see the
lines: license server UP (MASTER) v11.9 and ugslmd: UP v11.9
(They should be very near the top)




Your NX 8.5 License Server is now running and properly configured.
