Intodaystechnologydrivensociety,effectiveaccesstoanduseofinformationisakeyenablerforprogress.Drivenbythe
demandsforknowledgebasedapplicationsandtheunprecedentedavailabilityofinformationontheWeb,thestudyof
knowledgecaptureisofcrucialimportance.Knowledgecaptureinvolvestheextractionofusefulknowledgefromvastand
diverseonlinesourcesaswellasitsacquisitiondirectlyfromhumanexperts.
Researchersandpractitionerswhoworkintheareaofknowledgecapturetraditionallyparticipateinseveraldistinct
communities,includingknowledgeengineering,machinelearning,naturallanguageprocessing,humancomputerinteraction,
artificialintelligence,andtheSemanticWeb.KCAP2013willprovideaforumthatbringstogethermembersofdisparate
researchcommunitieswhoareinterestedinefficientlycapturingknowledgefromavarietyofsourcesandincreating
representationsthatcanbeusefulforautomatedreasoning,analysis,andotherformsofmachineprocessing,aswellasto
supportusersinknowledgeintensivecollaborativetasks.
Inaddition,thewealthofinformationavailableandgeneratedontheWeb,bothinstructured,linkeddataformsandin
unstructuredinformationsources,bringstheneedfornewmethodstomakeknowledgeemergefromsuchsources,following
therecentdemocratisation,andsomehowindustrialisation,ofareassuchasopendata,linkeddataandtheSemanticWeb.
Suchnewmethodsmustdrawbothfromthetraditionalknowledgeacquisitiontechniquesandfrommorecomputational
approaches,fromlargescaledatamining,statisticalanalysis,dataanalytics,etc.Forthisreason,wearemakingthespecial
themeoftheKCAP2013conference:
Knowledge Capture in the Age of Massive Web Data
Thiswillbereflectedboththroughencouragingpapersubmissionsshowingworksonthewaytodealwiththescale,butalso
thedistribution,heterogeneity,incompleteness,inconsistencyandvarietyofbothsourcesandresultswhentryingtomake
knowledgeemergefrommassiveWebdata,includingdatapublishedontheWeb,aswellasgeneratedthroughtheWeb.
Wewillalso,forthefirsttimeintheKCAPconferenceseries,introduceaspecialApplicationTrack,wheresubmissionsare
invitedtopresentresultstestedanddeployedinreallifesettings.Theapplicationtrackwillpayspecialattentiontoinuse
applicationsforthegeneration,management,andreuseoflargeamountsofexistingdataandknowledgeresourcesonthe
Web.Dataandknowledgeintensiveapplicationsinavarietyofdomainsarewelcome,includingtheWebofData,mobileand
sensornetworks,largescalescientificdatamanagementandreuse,opengovernmentandeparticipation,socialnetworks,
andenterprisedatamanagementandbusinessintelligence.Weencouragesubmissionsinsuchdomains,dealingwithtopics
including:bigdatacapture,representationandanalytics,crowdsourcingfordatagenerationandproblemsolving,hybrid
approachescombiningknowledgeengineeringandmachinelearning,dataandservicedynamicity,heterogeneityanddecay,
andinnovativeuserinterfaces.Especiallyinterestingareapplicationswithavailabledatasetsandinplacedatadriven
businessmodels.
