FAMILY WELLNESS PRACTICAL APPROACH

These approaches can be practical and through which identified interventions


can be carried out. The care may be delivered in the house, private clinics, health
centers, school clinics and industrial/workplace clinics.

1.) Family Health Care Program
In Family Wellness, all families in the target community will be potential recipient
of the benefits from the program. Presently there are definite criteria to the kind
of families which can be admitted to the program.
PRACTICE
- Used in assessing the function of the family as a unit of care. It
is based on systems approach and acts as guide and record on
family interview.
- Presenting problem or reason for interview
- Roles and structure
- Affect
- Communication
- Time
- Illness
- Coping with Stress
- Ecology and culture

Specific Component of Practice
- Presenting problems or reason for interview illness,
hospitalization, behavioural or relationship problems.
- Roles and structures hierarchical organization boundaries and
individualization, cohesion and control ( from chaos to rigidity).
- Affect family emotional tone (warmth, sadness, anger, humor)
- Communication verbal and non-verbal
- Time in the family life cycle
- Illness in the family past and present. Past experience of illness,
especially if serious will modify response to illness in the
present. The meaning of illness, health belief system and health
practices and lifestyle are also determined by the family
- Coping with stress adaptability, family strengths and
resources, coping in past and present.
- Ecology and culture interaction of the family with the
environment, social, cultural, religious , educational and medical
resources

2.) Family Health Consciousness Month.
- The Academy can lobby for an Executive order declaring one
month of the year as Family Health Consciousness Month
- During this month, all PAFP chapters, accredited programs and
members will devote their time for family screening, health
education and anticipatory guidance
3.) Parents Class/Responsible Parenthood Program
- The family life cycle starts with the newly married couple,
undergoing transition in roles, tasks and relationship through
time and eventually ending with death of both spouses.
- Either or both parents can undergo training to become Family
Health Advocate

4.) Caring for Children Program/Child Protection Program
- Since children are the hope of the motherland. It becomes
necessary that their optimum health, not only physical but also
emotional, social and mental and moral aspects be given
priority.
- It is important that the care to be given to children are
coordinated by the parents, the school physician and the family
doctor

5.) Adolescent Health Care Program
- Adolescent Programs maybe school-based or community based
for those who are out of school.
- Health maintenance and health promotion activities can be
hospital based and clinic based can also be done

6.) Young Adult and Middle Aged Adult Health Care Program
- At this stage health risk appraisal and periodic examination can
be done at the work place or with the family physician

7.) Care for the Elderly
- Respect for the elders and nurturing parents in the old age are
embedded in the Filipino culture.
- There is now a Senior Citizen Law which provides benefits for
senior citizens
- Action programs on Mental Health, Optimum Quality of Life
activities and Physical Fitness Program may be required.
Regular Physical Examination and Social Programs can also be
undertaken at the community level.

8.) Environmental Protection Program
- The Academy has introduced a community based
Environmental Protection Program which also involved our
schools.
- Home Base Program on Ecology like waste segregation and
recycling.

9.) Active Living for the Chronically and Terminally ill
- National Asthma Movement
- Philippine Coalition Against Tuberculosis
- Cancer aware as a scientific module has been introduced
- Hospice Care is being conducted by the Department of Family
and Community Medicine of the University of the Philippines
College of Medicine.

10.) Mental Health
- With all the stresses the Filipino Family is facing with the
changes in family structure, the weakening of the support
systems and mental health care can be a problem. Thus, early
detection of and intervention on mental disorder can be
important ingredients in Family Wellness.

11.) School Health Program
- School-based health program will be directed not only towards
students but also towards teachers and non-academic staff. It
covers not only giving of first aid remedies but primary care and
health curriculum for students.
