What the bursary/scholarship The bursary covers full tertiary registration and tuition fees,
covers book allowance, once off computer allowance, medical and
death benefit cover, residence fees, very generous personal
allowance for the period of tuition at the tertiary institution and
14 days paid time-off per annum.
What happens after the The bursary scheme is designed to equip the student with all the
completion of studies building blocks he/she will need to make a success of the career.
This starts with the option of a unique exposure year where a

Academic requirements Applicants must be “all rounders” who achieve not only
academic excellence but are also achievers in other fields,
need to be politically aware and involvement in sport and

South African Institute of Civil Engineering (SAICE)

Fields available National diploma or the degree in Civil Engineering


Who can apply Financially needy and academically deserving students at a
South African tertiary Institution. Students from foreign
countries are not considered. Bursaries are intended for
S2, S3, and S4 Civil Engineering students only and for the
degree are second year, third year and fourth year Civil
Engineering students only.
Academic requirements Bursaries are awarded to National students after having
passed their first level (S1) exams and to degree students
after having passed their first year exam.
What does the bursary cover Bursaries are granted per semester and are dependent on
exam results received. The funds/bursaries are intended to
partially cover registration, tuition and books. Bursary
cheques are made out to the tertiary institution to be
credited to the bursar’s account. The amount is the
Maximum of R5000 per student per semester.

MINTEK

Fields available Geology, Mineralogy, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry,


Chemical Engineering, Extractive or Physical Metallurgical
Engineering and Electrical or light or heavy current Electronic
Engineering, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.
Who can apply Post students intending to do research in the above fields at
any recognized South African University. Undergraduate
students intending to do degrees at traditional Universities
and comprehensive Universities.
Academic requirements For post graduate students the research project must be
approved by Mintek. For undergraduate students
Matriculation exemption with minimum level 5 in Maths,
Science and English. The students also need to have taken
Maths and Science in grade 10-12. Students already enrolled
at University must not have any financial support that entails
a service obligation upon graduation, and can demonstrate
acceptable academic performance.
What does the bursary cover The bursaries cover the full payment of tuition fees,
residence fees and other costs in return for a commitment to
work at Mintek on year-for year basis.
What happens after the completion On the completion of their studies, bursars undergo an
of the studies intensive training course that is aimed at turning them into

Academic requirements Certified proof that the applicant holds a recognized or
accredited academic qualification.
What does the bursary cover No bursary but provides training instead.
What happens after the completion It demonstrates the candidates identification with the ideals
of the studies of the profession, namely maintenance of a high level of
standards and of professionalism in the interest of the public
and a country as a whole. As the industry is increasingly in
need of registered persons, the candidates immediately find
themselves in an advantageous position over non-registered
practitioners. Persons registered as candidates are normally
subjected to a formally structured training program which
will prepare them for professional registration. After
obtaining the required qualification and experience, ECSA
registers Engineering practitioners in the professional
registration categories namely professional Engineer (Pr Eng),
professional Certificated Engineer (Pr Cert Eng), professional
Engineering Technologist (Pr Tch Eng) and the professional
Engineering Technician (Pr Techni Eng).
