Product Specification Sheet General Technical Description

1. Field of Application

This product specification sheet is valid for ArGeTon-tile plates, a ventilated facade
system according to DIN 18516-1 including the fastening on the substructure for
outside wall claddings.

2. Materials/ Terms

ArGeTon Tile Plates
ArGeTon tile plates are extruded coarse-ceramic faade elements. After the kiln firing
the tiles are trimmed to remove the edges of the tiles. Ceramic tile plates are
specified as inflammable according to DIN 4102-4 (fire classification A).
ArGeTon tile plates have a high static firmness, are weatherproof and frost resistant

Substructure
The substructure consists of aluminium profiles according to DIN 4113-1 (alloy EN
AW 6063-T66)
Two installation systems are possible:
- Vertical substructure (consists of wall cleats and vertical T-profiles)
The tiles are fixed with blind rivets onto T-profiles.
- Horizontal substructure (consists of wall cleats, vertical L-profiles and
horizontal carrier rails).
The tiles are fixed with clamps onto the horizontal carrier rail.
With approved anchorage elements (wall plugs) the cleats are fixed onto the
supporting wall and with approved fixing materials like rivets or screws the
substructure is to be installed.

Faade System
The assemblings and the elements of the ArGeTon facade systems are depicted in
picture 1 (vertical substructure) and picture 2 (horizontal substructure).

3. Production

The process involves the milling of clay from a variety of sources for different colors.
The clays for the most common colors are processed in to a storage facility where
the moisture is controlled to prevent it drying out. The clays for the special colors are
fed in to hoppers from where they are directly fed to the extruder after milling.
The clays are carried via an automated conveyor system through blenders and in to
an extrusion machine which has dies to create the various tile heights and profiles.
As the tiles come through the extruder they are cut to length (oversized by approx
50mm). The tiles go in to a dryer from where they are then fed in to the kilns directly
or go onto a glazing line for application of special colors or glazes.
After the kiln firing the tiles are trimmed to remove the edges of the tiles, which curl
during firing, and are then banded, packed on to pallets, corner edges are protected,
shrink wrapped and banded again for shipping.

Due to raw material and kiln firing technique 13 natural basic colours can be
produced. In addition to that different colours can be developed by engobes or
glazures. Different surfaces are possible (grooved, brushed, textured, etc.). Ultra-
modern laser controlled conveying and production logistics guarantee an economical
and flexible production process.

4. Requirements

General Requirements
The elements of the facade like aluminium substructure, insulation, fixations and
anchorage are regulated in DIN 18516-1 Cladding for external walls, ventilated at
rear. Ceramic facade claddings are non-regulated building products and are not
covered by generally accepted codes of practise, consequently they have to be
approved by a certificate of applicability. This certificate of applicability is to be
carried out according to DIN 18516-1 annex A or C. The test reports must only be
provided by approved and certified testing laboratories.

Specific Requirements
The determination of the specific mass and density of the tiles is to be carried out
according to EN ISO 10545-3.ArGeTon-tile plates meet the demands of frost
resistance as per DIN EN 1304 paragraph 5.4.3.

Accessory

Joint Profiles
Aluminium joint profiles are available for 8mm or 4mm joints in lengths of 3m. They can be
ordered in the colours RAL 1015 ivory, RAL 7005 mouse grey, RAL 7015 slate grey and RAL
8004 copper brown.

Abutment joint Profile
Abutment joints are always made with 4mm joints.

Spring Profile
Spring profiles are necessary at installations (e.g. building corners with mitre cut), where no
joint profiles are possible. They guarantee that the tiles stay tight within the clips or clamps, to
avoid rattling tiles due to strong wind.

Corner Profiles
Aluminium corner profiles are available untreated, anodised or painted with RAL-colours.

Replacement of ArGeTontiles (horizontal + vertical substructure):

Installed ArGeTontiles can not be removed afterwards. To replace a damaged tile it is
necessary to destroy this tile and install a new one.

Before fixing the new tile the upper fold has to be shortened approx. 4mm in the areas of the
tile clips. After that the new tile can be fixed by sliding it up to the top clip and then letting it
down on the bottom clip.

Aluminium Substructure Vertical

Basic Concept

The substructure consists of pre-punched vertical T-sections fastened to the building
with aluminium wall cleats placed at every vertical joint of the cladding. The
ArGeTon-tiles are fixed to the T-sections by aluminium clips. A junction profile has to
be placed in every vertical joint. It keeps the tiles from moving sidewards and ensure
the tiles sit firmly in the clips due to the clamping effect (avoiding rattling noises). The
vertical joint profiles do also prevent the intrusion of rain water.

Substructure and Heat Insulation

Wall cleats are anchored to the bearing wall by using approved dowels. The
distances between the wall brackets depend on the length of the tiles and on statical
calculations. After that the heat insulation is applied to the previously cleaned wall
surface. The heat insulation must be installed in accordance with the manufacturers
guidelines. In general, high-quality mineral fibre boards in accordance with EN 13162
are applied. The choice of the insulation is determined by the building and its special
requirements on an individual basis. The material thickness is determined by the
proof of heat protection.

The T-profiles are aligned on the wall cleats and fixed with approved rivets or screws.
The design of fixing points and sliding points has to be considered in order to allow
thermal expansion.

Fixing the tiles

First, the bottom clips have to be fixed always two per ArGeTon tile onto the pre-
drilled T-profiles with blind rivets or screws. The next step is to install the tiles onto
the clips. Then fix them at their top side by screwing or riveting a middle-clip onto the
T-profile. The pre-punched holes guarantee a space of 2-3 mm between clip and tile
for tolerances and thermal expansion. This procedure has to be repeated for every
row up to the top of the faade.

The joint profiles have to be placed between the tiles after the first tile row has been
finished. They do not need to be fixed separately.

Horizontal Substructure

Basic Concept

The substructure consists of basic vertical L-profiles, which are fixed by aluminium
wall cleats.
Horizontal aluminium carrier rails are designed on the basic substructure. The
distance is determined by the height of the ArGeTon tiles, which are fixed to the
horizontal support rails by clamps. A junction profile has to be placed in every vertical
joint. It keeps the tiles from moving sidewards and makes sure that the tiles sit firmly
in the clips due to the clamping effect (avoiding rattling noises). The vertical joint
profiles do also prevent the intrusion of rain water.

Vertical L-profiles are aligned on the wall cleats and fixed with approved rivets or
screws. The design of fixing points and sliding points has to be considered in order to
allow thermal expansion.

The special, horizontal ArGeTon carrier rails are designed on the vertical profiles.
The distance of the rails relates to the tile height and can be taken from the assembly
schedule. The rails have to be fixed by approved self-drilling screws.

Fixing the Tiles

First insert the bottom clamps always two per ArGeTon tile into the first carrier rail
at the bottom. Then put the first row of tiles into the clamps. The joint profiles have to
be installed between the tiles and do not need to be fixed separately.

The next step is to insert the tiles into the clamps and to fix them at their top side with
the next clamp (middle clamp) onto the horizontal rail. The exact positioning of the
horizontal rails according to the tile height guarantees a space of 2-3 mm between
clamp and tile for tolerances and thermal expansion.

This procedure has to be repeated for every line up to the top of the faade.
