Leafy green, allium, and cruciferous vegetables are key components of a healthy diet.


Common colorful culinary fruits. Apples, pears, strawberries, oranges, bananas, grapes,
canary melons, water melon, cantaloupe, pineapple and mango.
A healthy diet is one that helps maintain or improve general health. A healthy diet provides
the body with essential nutrition: fluid, adequate essential amino acids from protein,

essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and adequate calories. The requirements for a
healthy diet can be met from a variety of plant-based and animal-based foods. A healthy diet
supports energy needs and provides for human nutrition without exposure to toxicity or
excessive weight gain from consuming excessive amounts. Where lack of calories is not an
issue, a properly balanced diet (in addition to exercise) is also thought to be important for
lowering health risks, such as obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and
cancer.

Various nutrition guides are published by medical and governmental institutions to educate
the public on what they should be eating to promote health. Nutrition facts labels are also
mandatory in some countries to allow consumers to choose between foods based on the
components relevant to health.

World Health Organization[edit]
The World Health Organization (WHO) makes the following 5 recommendations with
respect to both populations and individuals:

Eat roughly the same amount of calories that your body is using. A healthy weight is a
balance between energy consumed and energy that is 'burnt off'.
Increase consumption of plant foods, particularly fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole
grains and nuts.
Limit intake of fats, preferring the healthier unsaturated fats to saturated fats and trans
fats.
Limit the intake of granulated sugar. A 2003 report recommends less than 10% simple
sugars.

Limit salt / sodium consumption from all sources and ensure that salt is iodized.
Other recommendations include:
Essential micronutrients such as vitamins and certain minerals.
Avoiding directly poisonous (e.g. heavy metals) and carcinogenic (e.g. benzene)
substances.
Avoiding foods contaminated by human pathogens (e.g. E. coli, tapeworm eggs).

American Heart Association / World Cancer Research
Fund / American Institute for Cancer Research[edit]
The American Heart Association, World Cancer Research Fund, and American Institute for
Cancer Research recommends a diet that consists mostly of unprocessed plant foods, with
emphasis a wide range of whole grains, legumes, and non-starchy vegetables and fruits. This
healthy diet is replete with a wide range of various non-starchy vegetables and fruits, that
provide different colors including red, green, yellow, white, purple, and orange. They note
that tomato cooked with oil, allium vegetables like garlic, and cruciferous vegetables like
cauliflower, provide some protection against cancer. This healthy diet is low in energy
density, which may protect against weight gain and associated diseases. Finally, limiting
consumption of sugary drinks, limiting energy rich foods, including fast foods and red
meat, and avoiding processed meats improves health and longevity. Overall, researchers and
medical policy conclude that this healthy diet can reduce the risk of chronic disease and
cancer.

Harvard School of Public Health[edit]
The Nutrition Source of Harvard School of Public Health makes the following 10
recommendations for a healthy diet:

Choose good carbohydrates: whole grains (the less processed the better), vegetables,
fruits and beans. Avoid white bread, white rice, and the like as well as pastries,
sugared sodas, and other highly-processed food.

Pay attention to the protein package: good choices include fish, poultry, nuts, and
beans. Try to avoid red meat.

Choose foods containing healthy fats. Plant oils, nuts, and fish are the best choices.
Limit consumption of saturated fats, and avoid foods with trans fat.

Choose a fiber-filled diet which includes whole grains, vegetables, and fruits.

Eat more vegetables and fruitsthe more colorful and varied, the better.

Calcium is important, but milk is not its best source. Good sources of calcium are
collards, bok choy, fortified soy milk, baked beans, and supplements which contain
calcium and vitamin D.

Water is the best source of liquid. Avoid sugary drinks, and limit intake of juices and
milk. Coffee, tea, artificially-sweetened drinks, 100-percent fruit juices, low-fat milk
and alcohol can fit into a healthy diet but are best consumed in moderation. Sports
drinks are recommended only for people who exercise more than an hour at a stretch
to replace substances lost in sweat.

Limit salt intake. Choose more fresh foods, instead of processed ones.

Moderate alcohol drinking has health benefits, but is not recommended for
everyone.

Daily multivitamin and extra vitamin D intake has potential health benefits.

Other than nutrition, the guide recommends frequent physical activity (exercise) and
maintaining a healthy body weight.

For specific conditions[edit]
In addition to dietary recommendations for the general population, there are many specific
diets that have primarily been developed to promote better health in specific population
groups, such as people with high blood pressure (as in low sodium diets or the more specific
DASH diet), or people who are overweight or obese (in weight control diets). However, some
of them may have more or less evidence for beneficial effects in normal people as well.
Hypertension[edit]
A low sodium diet is beneficial for people with high blood pressure. A Cochrane review
published in 2008 concluded that a long term (more than 4 weeks) low sodium diet in
Caucasians has a useful effect to reduce blood pressure, both in people with hypertension and
in people with normal blood pressure.

The DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) is a diet promoted by the
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (part of the NIH, a United States government
organization) to control hypertension. A major feature of the plan is limiting intake of
sodium,

and it also generally encourages the consumption of nuts, whole grains, fish,
poultry, fruits and vegetables while lowering the consumption of red meats, sweets, and
sugar. It is also "rich in potassium, magnesium, and calcium, as well as protein". Evidence
shows that the Mediterranean diet improves cardiovascular outcomes.

WHO recommends few standards such as an intake of less than 5 grams per person per day
so as to prevent one from cardiovascular disease. Unsaturated fatty acids with
polyunsaturated vegetable oils, on the other hand plays an essential role in reducing coronary
heart disease risk as well as diabetes.

Obesity[edit]

Weight control diets aim to maintain a controlled weight. In most cases dieting is used in
combination with physical exercise to lose weight in those who are overweight or obese.
Diets to promote weight loss are divided into four categories: low-fat, low-carbohydrate, low-
calorie, and very low calorie.

A meta-analysis of six randomized controlled trials found no
difference between the main diet types (low calorie, low carbohydrate, and low fat), with a 2
4 kilogram weight loss in all studies.

At two years, all calorie-reduced diet types cause
equal weight loss irrespective of the macronutrients emphasized.

Diet and possible reduced disease risk[edit]

There may be a relationship between lifestyle including food consumption and potentially
lowering the risk of cancer or other chronic diseases. A healthy diet may consist mostly of
whole plant foods, with limited consumption of energy-dense foods, red meat, alcoholic
drinks and salt while reducing consumption of sugary drinks, and processed meat.

A
healthy diet may contain non-starchy vegetables and fruits, including those with red, green,
yellow, white, purple or orange pigments. Tomato cooked with oil, allium vegetables like
garlic, and cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower "probably" contain compounds which are
under research for their possible anti-cancer activity.

A healthy diet is low in energy density, lowering caloric content, thereby possibly inhibiting
weight gain and lowering risk against chronic diseases.

Chronic Western diseases are
associated with pathologically increased IGF-1 levels. Findings in molecular biology and
epidemiologic data suggest that milk consumption is a promoter of chronic diseases of
Western nations, including atherosclerosis, carcinogenesis and neurodegenerative diseases.

Unhealthy diets[edit]
An unhealthy diet is a major risk factor for a number of chronic diseases including: high
blood pressure, diabetes, abnormal blood lipids, overweight/obesity, cardiovascular diseases,
and cancer.

The WHO estimates that 2.7 million deaths are attributable to a diet low in fruit and
vegetable every year.

Globally it is estimated to cause about 19% of gastrointestinal
cancer, 31% of ischaemic heart disease, and 11% of strokes,

thus making it one of the
leading preventable causes of death worldwide.

Fad diets[edit]

Fad diet usually refers to idiosyncratic diets and eating patterns.

They are diets that claim
to promote weight loss or treat obesity by various mechanisms,
[25]
provide little to no
scientific reasoning behind their purported health benefits, and have little or no proof to
support them.
Public health[edit]
Fears of high cholesterol were frequently voiced up until the mid-1990s. However, more
recent research has shown that the distinction between high- and low-density lipoprotein
('good' and 'bad' cholesterol, respectively) must be addressed when speaking of the potential
ill effects of cholesterol. Different types of dietary fat have different effects on blood levels of
cholesterol. For example, polyunsaturated fats tend to decrease both types of cholesterol;
monounsaturated fats tend to lower LDL and raise HDL; saturated fats tend to either raise
HDL, or raise both HDL and LDL;

and trans fat tend to raise LDL and lower HDL.
Dietary cholesterol itself is only found in animal products such as meat, eggs, and dairy, but
studies have shown that even large amounts of dietary cholesterol only have negligible
effects on blood cholesterol.

Vending machines in particular have come under fire as being avenues of entry into schools
for junk food promoters. However, there is little in the way of regulation and it is difficult for
most people to properly analyze the real merits of a company referring to itself as "healthy."
Recently, the United Kingdom removed the rights for McDonald's to advertise its products,
as the majority of the foods that were seen have low nutrient values and high fat counts were
aimed at children under the guise of the "Happy Meal"

. The British Heart
Foundation released its own government-funded advertisements, labeled "Food4Thought",
which were targeted at children and adults displaying the gory nature of how fast food is
generally constituted.
Cultural and psychological factors[edit]
From a psychological and cultural perspective, a healthier diet may be difficult to achieve for
people with poor eating habits.

This may be due to tastes acquired in childhood and
preferences for sugary, salty and/or fatty foods.

Physical Activity[edit]
In addition to the above factors, physical activity in itself is identified as the best way to keep
onself healthy. WHO develops a global recommendation for health basically for three age
groups namely 517 years old; 1864 years old; and 65 years old and above. For 517 years
old, at least 60 minutes of physical activity such as games, recreation daily is highly
recommended. For the ones between 1864 years and above 65 years old age group, at least
150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise or at least 75 minutes of vigorous-
intensity aerobic physical activity is recommended.

Environmental influences[edit]
Child maltreatment[edit]
Child abuse which encompasses physical, psychological and sexual abuse, as well as neglect
has been shown by innumerable studies to be a precipitating factor in a wide variety of
psychiatric disorders, including eating disorders. Children who are subjected to abuse may
develop eating disorders in an effort to gain some sense of control or for a sense of comfort,
or they may be in an environment where the diet is unhealthy or insufficient. Child abuse and
neglect can cause profound changes in both the physiological structure and the
neurochemistry of the developing brain. Children who, as wards of the state, were placed in
orphanages or foster homes are especially susceptible to developing a disordered eating
pattern. In a study done in New Zealand 25% of the study subjects in foster care exhibited an
eating disorder (Tarren-Sweeney M. 2006). An unstable home environment is detrimental to
the emotional well-being of children, even in the absence of blatant abuse or neglect the
stress of an unstable home can contribute to the development of an eating
disorder.

Social isolation[edit]
Social isolation has been shown to have a deleterious effect on an individual's physical and
emotional well-being. Those that are socially isolated have a higher mortality rate in general
as compared to individuals that have established social relationships. This effect on mortality
is markedly increased in those with pre-existing medical or psychiatric conditions, and has
been especially noted in cases of coronary heart disease. "The magnitude of risk associated
with social isolation is comparable with that of cigarette smoking and other major biomedical
and psychosocial risk factors." (Brummett et al.)
Social isolation can be inherently stressful, depressing and anxiety-provoking. In an attempt
to ameliorate these distressful feelings an individual may engage in emotional eating in which
food serves as a source of comfort. The loneliness of social isolation and the inherent
stressors thus associated have been implicated as triggering factors in binge eating as
well.

Waller, Kennerley and Ohanian (2007) argued that both bingeingvomiting and restriction
are emotion suppression strategies, but they are just utilized at different times. For example,
restriction is used to pre-empt any emotion activation, while bingeing vomiting is used after
an emotion has been activated.

Parental influence[edit]
Parental influence has been shown to be an intrinsic component in the development of eating
behaviors of children. This influence is manifested and shaped by a variety of diverse factors
such as familial genetic predisposition, dietary choices as dictated by cultural or ethnic
preferences, the parents' own body shape and eating patterns, the degree of involvement and
expectations of their children's eating behavior as well as the interpersonal relationship of
parent and child. This is in addition to the general psychosocial climate of the home and the
presence or absence of a nurturing stable environment. It has been shown that maladaptive
parental behavior has an important role in the development of eating disorders. As to the
more subtle aspects of parental influence, it has been shown that eating patterns are
established in early childhood and that children should be allowed to decide when their
appetite is satisfied as early as the age of two. A direct link has been shown between obesity
and parental pressure to eat more.
Coercive tactics in regard to diet have not been proven to be efficacious in controlling a
child's eating behavior. Affection and attention have been shown to affect the degree of a
child's finickiness and their acceptance of a more varied diet.

Peer pressure[edit]
In various studies such as one conducted by The McKnight Investigators, peer pressure was
shown to be a significant contributor to body image concerns and attitudes toward eating
among subjects in their teens and early twenties.
Eleanor Mackey and co-author, Annette M. La Greca of the University of Miami, studied 236
teen girls from public high schools in southeast Florida. "Teen girls' concerns about their own
weight, about how they appear to others and their perceptions that their peers want them to be
thin are significantly related to weight-control behavior," says psychologist Eleanor Mackey
of the Children's National Medical Center in Washington and lead author of the study. "Those
are really important."
According to one study, 40% of 9- and 10-year-old girls are already trying to lose weight.

Such dieting is reported to be influenced by peer behavior, with many of those individuals on
a diet reporting that their friends also were dieting. The number of friends dieting and the
number of friends who pressured them to diet also played a significant role in their own
choices.

Elite athletes have a significantly higher rate in eating disorders. Female athletes in sports
such as gymnastics, ballet, diving, etc. are found to be at the highest risk among all athletes.
Women are more likely than men to acquire an eating disorder between the ages of 13-30. 0-
15% of those with bulimia and anorexia are men.

Cultural pressure[edit]
There is a cultural emphasis on thinness which is especially pervasive in western society.
There is an unrealistic stereotype of what constitutes beauty and the ideal body type as
portrayed by the media, fashion and entertainment industries. "The cultural pressure on men
and women to be 'perfect' is an important predisposing factor for the development of eating
disorders".

Further, when women of all races base their evaluation of their self upon
what is considered the culturally ideal body, the incidence of eating disorders increases.
[135]

Eating disorders are becoming more prevalent in non Western countries where thinness is not
seen as the ideal, showing that social and cultural pressures are not the only causes of eating
disorders.

For example, observations of anorexia in all of the non-Western regions of the
world point to the disorder not being culture-bound as once thought.

However, studies
on rates of bulimia suggest that it might be culturally bound. In non-Western countries,
bulimia is less prevalent than anorexia, but these non-Western countries where it is observed
can be said to have probably or definitely been influenced or exposed to Western culture and
ideology.

Socioeconomic status has been viewed as a risk factor for eating disorders, presuming that
possessing more resources allows for an individual to actively choose to diet and reduce body
weight.

Some studies have also shown a relationship between increasing body
dissatisfaction with increasing socioeconomic status.

However, once high SES has been
achieved, this relationship weakens and, in some cases, no longer exists.

The media plays a major role in the way in which people view themselves. Countless
magazine ads and commercials depict rail thin celebrities like Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie
and Mary Kate Olsen, who appear to gain nothing but attention from their looks. Society has
taught people that being accepted by others is necessary at all costs.

Unfortunately this
has led to the belief that in order to fit in one must look a certain way. Televised beauty
competitions such as the Miss America Competition contribute to the idea of what it means to
be beautiful because competitors are evaluated on the basis of their opinion.

Pressure from society is also seen within the homosexual community. Homosexual men are at
greater risk of eating disorder symptoms than heterosexual men.

Within the gay culture,
muscularity gives the advantages of both social and sexual desirability and also power.
[144]

These pressures and ideas that another homosexual male may desire a mate who is thinner or
muscular can possibly lead to eating disorders. The higher eating disorder symptom score
reported, the more concern about how others perceive them and the more frequent and
excessive exercise sessions occur.

High levels of body dissatisfaction are also linked to
external motivation to working out and old age; however, having a thin and muscular body
occurs within younger homosexual males than older.

It is important to realize some of the limitations and
challenges of many studies that try to examine the roles of
culture, ethnicity, and SES. For starters, most of the cross-
cultural studies use definitions from the DSM-IV-TR,
which has been criticized as reflecting a Western cultural
bias. Thus, assessments and questionnaires may not be
constructed to detect some of the cultural differences
associated with different disorders. Also, when looking at
individuals in areas potentially influenced by Western
culture, few studies have attempted to measure how much
an individual has adopted the mainstream culture or
retained the traditional cultural values of the area. Lastly,
the majority of the cross-cultural studies on eating
disorders and body image disturbances occurred in
Western nations and not in the countries or regions being
examined.

Treatment[edit]
Treatment varies according to type and severity of eating disorder, and usually more than one
treatment option is utilized.

However, there is lack of good evidence about treatment and
management, which means that current views about treatment are based mainly on clinical
experience. Therefore, before treatment takes place, family doctors will play an important
role in early treatment as patients suffering from eating disorders will be reluctant to see a
psychiatrist and a lot will depend on trying to establish a good relationship with the patient
and family in primary care.

That said, some of the treatment methods are:
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT),

which postulates that an individual's
feelings and behaviors are caused by their own thoughts instead of external stimuli
such as other people, situations or events; the idea is to change how a person thinks
and reacts to a situation even if the situation itself does not change. See Cognitive

o Acceptance and commitment therapy: a type of CBT

o Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT), a set of cognitive drills or
compensatory interventions designed to enhance cognitive
functioning.

A selection of foods consumed by humans. However, the human diet can vary widely.
In nutrition, diet is the sum of food consumed by a person or other organism.

Dietary
habits are the habitual decisions an individual or culture makes when choosing what foods to
eat. The word diet often implies the use of specific intake of nutrition for health or weight-
management reasons (with the two often being related). Although humans are omnivores,
each culture and each person holds some food preferences or some food taboos. This may be
due to personal tastes or ethical reasons. Individual dietary choices may be more or less
healthy.
Proper nutrition requires ingestion and absorption of vitamins, minerals, and food energy in
the form of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Dietary habits and choices play a significant
role in the quality of life, health and longevity. It can define cultures and play a role in
religion.




Religious and cultural dietary choices[edit]
Some cultures and religions have restrictions concerning what foods are acceptable in their
diet. For example, only Kosher foods are permitted by Judaism, and Halal foods by Islam.
Although Buddhists are generally vegetarians, the practice varies and meat-eating may be
permitted depending on the sects.

In Hinduism, vegetarianism is the ideal, but meat-eating
is not banned. Jain are strictly vegetarian and consumption of roots is not permitted.
Dietary choices[edit]
Many people choose to forgo food from animal sources to varying degrees (e.g.
flexitarianism, vegetarianism, veganism, fruitarianism) for health reasons, issues surrounding
morality, or to reduce their personal impact on the environment. Raw foodism is another
contemporary trend. These diets may require tuning or supplementation such as vitamins to
meet ordinary nutritional needs.
Weight management[edit]

A particular diet may be chosen to seek weight loss or weight gain. Changing a subject's
dietary intake, or "going on a diet", can change the energy balance and increase or decrease
the amount of fat stored by the body. Some foods are specifically recommended, or even
altered, for conformity to the requirements of a particular diet. These diets are often
recommended in conjunction with exercise. Specific weight loss programs can be harmful to
health, while others may be beneficial (and can thus be coined as healthy diets). The terms
"healthy diet" and "diet for weight management" are often related, as the two promote healthy
weight management. Having a healthy diet is a way to prevent health problems, and will
provide your body with the right balance of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.

An eating disorder is a mental disorder that interferes with normal food consumption. It is
defined by abnormal eating habits that may involve either insufficient or excessive diet.

A healthy diet may improve or maintain optimal health. In developed countries, affluence
enables unconstrained caloric intake and possibly inappropriate food choices.

It is recommended by many authorities that people maintain a normal weight by (limiting
consumption of energy-dense foods and sugary drinks), eat plant-based food, limit red and
processed meat, and limit alcohol.

a healthy diet.





















Control your coffee intake
Nurse a coffee throughout the day. If you supersize your coffee to jump start your day, you
may be driving yourself deeper and deeper into a low-energy rut. Compelling research from
Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and other institutions finds that
