FROM THE PASTOR
Dr. Mike Turner
Senior Pastor

Summer is in full swing here at LBC, and were seeing Gods hand at work in so
many ways. Our outdoor baptism just last month (pictures are available in this
issue of the Signal) was such a blessing! Our students have been to their annual
camp. Our children are full bore into their summer Road Trip. Were seeing new
people come to faith in Jesus in wonderful ways. A young dad walked into our
offce a couple of weeks ago and asked how he could know Jesus- our Next
Gen pastors, Ian Geimer and Daniel Walker, quickly ministered to him, and he
received the Lord into his life. An older single walked in last week with the same
question. Dan Williams, our worship pastor, immediately led him to the Lord. Pam
and I had the opportunity last Sunday following our last worship service to pray
with a young couple as they received Jesus as their Savior. The gospel is truly the
hope of the world and as we share it with others, we see its power over and over.
Coming up in a few weeks is our annual Week of Refreshment. This year were
calling it Come Awake, and it will run Sunday night August 3 through Wednes-
day night August 6, each night at 7 p.m. Wee Care will be provided for children
up to fve years-old. I want to share with you what to expect.
Sunday (August 3) Reggie McNeal will minister to us on Come Awake in Your
Faith. Reggie is a bestselling author, teacher & popular speaker for groups en-
gaged in community service. We are looking forward to hearing him speak, and
afterwards, well have a home-made ice cream social following the service!
Monday (August 4) Jennie Riddle will lead us to Come Awake in Your Prayer
& Praise. Jennie is a composer, writer and conference leader who travels across
the country. Her best known song is Revelation Song, and her ministry includes
leading local churches into a deeper experience of worship. You can learn more
about her at www.jennieriddle.com
Tuesday (August 5) Johnson and Sharon Dorn will minister on the theme of
Come Awake in Your Marriage: Learning True Intimacy. Johnson serves as the
pastor of Chapel in the Woods. He and Sharon have a unique and powerful way
of helping couples in their marriage.
Wednesday (August 6) Rev. Charles Jackson from Brookland Baptist Church
will minister to us on Come Awake in Your Church. Rev. Jackson is a remark-
able preacher and comes to us each year in the fnal service of our week. This
year were also combining our choir with Brooklands choir, for a great evening of
Spirit-flled worship and praise.
Im so excited about this Week of Refreshment! Im asking you to do two things
as we get closer to it. First, of course, we as a church body must be in prayer for
this week. God responds to the prayers of His people, and as we pour out our
hearts to him in prayer, He will answer. You can be a part of the 40 day count-
down until the Week of Refreshment begins by going to our church website and
downloading a weekly Scripture that will help guide your praying. The direct link
is www.lexingtonbaptist.org/comeawake.
Second, be here- and bring someone with you! This week is a great opportunity
to connect with your friends and neighbors and bring them with you to church.
May you have a blessed summer,
Pastor Mike

Student Ministry Families,
What an incredible summer we have already experienced. Journey Camp was a life changing week for so
many of our students and leaders. The testimonies of what God did in the lives of these students will be heard
for years to come. Thank you church family for your prayers and support as we traveled to Georgia for this
amazing week. Our summer intern, Sarah Talmage, started a girls Bible study on Monday nights from 6 to
7:30 at the Family Life Center. We also started our Sunday Nights with Sarah on June 22nd. Students are
invited to join us on Sunday nights from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Family Life Center; we are opening up the facility
for students to hang out and enjoy activities like volleyball and spike ball. For more information on this study
or our Sunday nights, you can email her at stalmage387@andersonuniversity.edu.

Starting on Wednesday, July 2nd, all students are invited to our Bible study at the lake. This study will be
held at Les and Tina Blackwells house from 6 to 8 p.m. every Wednesday night in July. Students will need to
bring their Bibles, swim wear and towels. We are asking the girls to bring snacks and for guys to bring canned
drinks each Wednesday. On July 2nd we are kicking this study off with a bang, and parents and students are
invited to stay until dark to watch our third annual LBC Fireworks Show.

On July 7th all LBC students are invited to Pine Island from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. We will enjoy Lake Murray,
volleyball and other fun activities. Guys make sure to bring canned drinks and girls bring snacks.

On July 19th and 20th, we are inviting our students to participate in Pursuit
2K14. On Saturday, June 19th, students will be spread all over Lexington,
serving the community. Students will have the chance to work in yards, paint,
clean up trash and work alongside those people in the community who need
our help. Pursuit 2K14 will fnish up on Sunday, July 20th, with a Night of
Worship at Lexington Baptist Church. This is an event that your student is
not going to want to miss. For more information please contact Ian Geimer at
ian@lexingtonbaptist.org.

July 31st is our third annual White Water Rafting Trip. All students are invited but need to
sign up with Daniel Walker ASAP. Please contact him for more information and to register at

Challenging yourself to serve inside of the church body that you are a
part of is always the right step to take. The gospel is personal, but it was
never meant to stop with just you. Living out the gospel together brings
unity that is literally beyond this world. Serving with brothers and sisters,
with a higher calling than your own, forms a special bond with those you
are serving with and those you are serving. When you read Pauls letters,
it seems like hes name dropping, but when you get down to it, you see
that he is connecting with those that he has a special bond with: a bond
of servanthood for the gospel of Jesus Christ. I often see these types
of bonds inside of our student ministry adult leaders. It looks like this:
adults willing to share life with students, for a higher calling. For someone
that hasnt tried serving, it may only sound like youre giving up some-
thing, like time, to serve others. For someone that has served, it often
feels like you are the one receiving the beneft of serving.

I am incredibly blessed by the connections I have made with the 6th grade girls.
I believe it truly takes a community to raise our children. It makes my day when I
see them outside of church and they run to hug me! I feel like I am receiving more
than giving! - Christy Boscaglia

Why I Love Reading the Bible
You might read that and think to yourself, You are a minister and a church
staff member youre supposed to love reading the Bible. I havent always
loved it I can remember days when Ive endured it to check off my reading
for the day, but there have been several days lately when I had to stop myself
so that I could move on to other things I needed to do. I have been spending
my time in the Psalms this year during my quiet times, and I am seeing them
in a completely different way. It has really been refreshing for me to read all
these praises to God for who he is and what he has done and apply them to my
own life and circumstances. I know you have seen God work in your life and
around you in some pretty amazing ways over the years. These verses from
Psalm 119 (129-133 NLT) really spoke to me:
Your laws are wonderful. No wonder I obey them! The teaching of your
word gives light, so even the simple can under stand. I pant with expecta-
tion, longing for your commands. Come and show me your mercy, as you do
for all who love your name. Guide my steps by your words so I will not be
overcome by evil.

I love how the New Living Translation expresses verse 131 I pant with
expectation what a great word picture!
to pant- means to breathe quickly, but there is also the meaning of deep
longing, as we fnd in Psalm 42 where the deer pants for water, so my soul
pants (or longs) for God.
with expectation- a belief that something will (or is likely to) happen.
Is this how you approach your times alone with God? I have to remind myself
from time to time to read with the expectation that God is going to reveal
something new to me during my quiet time. It helps to remind myself that the
writer of Hebrews says that the word of God is living and active, sharper than
any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and
of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrews
4:12, ESV).
With the right mindset, we can discern the word God wants to give us every
day. God says that as we pant with expectation and long for His commands,
then He will show us His mercy. That is a great promise-
He will be merciful to us as we immerse ourselves into
Him and His word. My prayer for you during these summer
months is that your time alone with God is rich, powerful
and a source of strength. I pray that God will prove Himself
merciful to you. Blessings!

Arthur Martins is one of our LBC members who has faithfully served as a volunteer with Lexington Interfaith
Community Services (LICS). Because of the huge need, he was there four to fve days a week. Recently, he
had to cut back to two and shared his concern for the hours he now cannot put in. Though there are hundreds
of volunteers in the count, he told me many of those may work one hour every three months, so seeing the
numbers can make people think there is not a need for them. This is what Art wrote:
Help! LICS needs volunteers. It takes a great deal of man hours to run an
organization this size. Are you looking for a place to serve in the Lexing-
ton Community area? There are places in the Thrift Shop, Food Pantry,
Donation Center or even in the Social Service Center.
Jesus said in Matthew 25:40, Whatever you did for one of the least of
these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.
Come and check us out. You may be glad you did.
I ask that you consider giving a couple of
hours a week to answer Arts plea for help for
this valued partner in missions. To volunteer
for LICS, you must be 14 years-old or older-
just visit their web site at www.licssc.org and
click on the volunteer heart in the top right
corner for an application.

Loving LICS Back
Helping Do the Most Good in Lexington and Beyond
Bringing Peace to Prison
In 1 Corinthians 12:3b it says, no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit. Verses 4-6 say, There
are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There
are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.
I have been blessed beyond measure since Ive been volunteering at Kirkland Prison, R&E Dorms. Gods Spirit
is real to me as never before in my walk. To see the desperation, doubt, the searching eyes and fear in some
of these men is sobering. I know God has called me and gifted me to minister to them in Jesuss name, and
its the most rewarding experience I have ever had. The peace and joy we have when we are in step with Him
is inexpressible.
During a recent Bible study, an inmante, Ronnie, said publicly he wanted to know Christ but cant and was
unable to explain. The following week I had a one-on-one session with him, and he shared his desire to accept
Christ but was confused and didnt think he was good enough. Ronnie was trying to understand with his head
instead of accepting Jesus with his heart and on faith. I shared with him for an hour, and he said he under-
stood. We got down on our knees in the little room and Ronnie surrendered his life to Christ and was set free
from bondage. Gods spirit became real to him, and he has the peace he so desperately wanted. Praise Gods
wonderful love and the power of His spirit.
