Angling: Fish'n' Tips : Anglers ignoring canal's potential;

European food and game fish (Abramis brama) of the carp family (Cyprinidae). Found in lakes and
slow rivers, the bream lives in schools and eats worms, mollusks, and other small animals. , carp and
roach, fewer anglers are taking to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal.
Liverpool & District Anglers' Association control fishing rights along 26 miles of the canal from close
to Eldonian village off Vauxhall Road, passing through Litherland, Netherton, Aintree, Maghull,
Lydiate and out into the countryside around Haskayne.
A large number of anglers live close to the banks of the canal but it seems most of them prefer to
ignore its potential and drive out of town to the increasingly popular commercial waters where fish
are almost guaranteed.
It's a pity because there are big bream, plenty of tench and masses of roach to be caught on most
sections, according to according to

He has been taking long walks along the canal and reckons the top spots are close to the footbridge
at Hall Lane in Maghull, behind Maghull Royal British Legion and in Lydiate on the stretch of canal
between Green Lane swingbridge and the Running Horses pub.
"Pleasure anglers have the canal to themselves and are delighted with the quality of fishing," he
said.
"The deeper water close to the British Legion has been especially prolific with plenty of bream to
4lb, mixed with a good number of tench. "Breadflake is getting the greatest share of fish and is best
presented laid on the canal bed on a size 14 or 16 hook.

"Groundbait scares the fish so the only way to attract them is either with a tiny thumb nail pot of
liquidised bread right at the start, or with loose fed casters.
"Double caster is also a good hookbait at the moment and is best used in the same swim as the
bread, which is two-thirds across the canal where the bottom of the far shelf and boat channel meet.
"Early morning and into the evening are certainly the best fishing times but a good tip when the
fishing gets slower is to use single or double white maggot maggot: see blowfly; fly; larva. on the

dangerous, unsafe - involving or causing danger or risk; liable to hurt or harm; "a dangerous
criminal"; "a dangerous bridge"; "unemployment reached dangerous to catch eels up to 2lb - and

"Our canal is stuffed full of quality roach - it always has been - and the best way to catch them is on
hempseed fishing right across with a 13 metre pole in the shallower water on the far shelf of the
canal."
Farrell went on to highlight the peaceful rural stretches of the canal around Haskayne such as Eager
Lane, Scarisbrick Arms, the King's Arms and Plex Lane.
Day tickets are not sold on the canal and anyone fishing must hold a LDAA membership card. They
cost pounds 17 for adults and pounds 6 for juniors from most fishing tackle shops
