Experiment No.1
Aim: - To determine standard consistency of cement.
Apparatus::- Vicats apparatus with Vicat plunger (10mm dia and 50mm length) Vicat needles
Vicats mould gauging trowel measuring !ar (100 to "00ml capacity) weighing #alance stop watch $
weight #o%.
Theory:- The o#!ect of this test is to find out the amount of water to #e added to the cement to get a
paste of normal consistency i.e the paste of certain standard solidity which is used to fi% the &uantity
of water to #e mi%ed in cement #efore performing tests for setting time soundness and compressi'e
strength.
Procedure:
1. Ta(e )00gm of cement passing through *50 micron +., sie'e and prepare a paste of cement
with a#out "5- i.e 100gm of clean water and mi%ed properly #y means of spatula on a non
porous surface ta(ing care that the gauging time is #etween . to 5 minutes. /auging time is
counted from the time of adding water to dry cement until commencing to fill the mould.
". 0ill the Vicat mould resting upon non porous plate with this paste. 1fter completely filling the
mould smooth off the surface of the paste #y single mo'ement of palm ma(ing it le'el with the
top of mould. The mould may #e slightly sha(en to e%pel the air.
.. 2lace the test #loc( in mould with the non porous resting plate under the rod attached with the
plunger.
). 3ower the plunger of 10mm dia and 50mm length attached to the mo'ea#le rod at the top
surface of the paste in the mould and release it &uic(ly without any !er( freely under gra'ity.
5. 4ote down the penetration of needle. +f the penetration is #etween .. to .5mm water added is
the re&uired water for normal consistency. +f the penetration is not proper repeat the process
with different percentage of water.

". 1fter half minute from the instant of adding water it should #e thoroughly mi%ed with
fingers for atleast one minute.
.. The plunger should #e released &uic(ly without pressure or !er( after the rod is #rought
down to touch the surface of test #loc(.
). 0or each repetition of the e%periment fresh cement is to #e ta(en.
5. 2lunger should #e cleaned during e'ery repetition and ma(e sure that it mo'es freely and
that there are no 'i#rations.
