MEMORANDUM 018-1415

TO : The Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan Community
RE : Renaming of the XU-CSG Offices
DATE : 27 June 2014

As agreed during the Executive Cabinet Meeting last 20 June 2014, each of the three XU-CSG offices is named
in honor of three Filipino Jesuit personalities.

Student Center 205 (StC 205) is dedicated to Schol Richard Michael Richie Fernando, a Filipino Jesuit
missionary. He was sent to teach in a technical school for the handicapped in Cambodia. Sometime in
October 1997, Fernando died after protecting his students from a grenade explosion just outside a
classroom of the school where he was teaching. Like Richie Fernando, the XU-CSG Executive Cabinet
and the Directorate officers are called to be protectors of the student body, no matter what obstacles
or challenges may come along. Thus, Student Center 205 is named as Schol Richie Fernando Office of
the Executive Cabinet and the Directorate. For the purpose of brevity, it is referred to as Fernando
Office.
Student Center 206 (StC 206) is dedicated to St Pedro Calungsod, a young Filipino catechist. He
accompanied Fr Diego Luis de San Vitores, a Jesuit priest, to Guam in order to catechize the native
Chamorros. In one of the baptismal rites he and Fr San Vitores initiated in the island, Calungsod was
killed by the natives who despise Christian missionaries. Like St Pedro Calungsod, the officers, staff,
and volunteers of XU-CSG are challenged to be passionate in their mission, no matter what
circumstances lies ahead. Thus, Student Center 206 is named as St Pedro Calungsod Student Leaders
Lounge. For the purpose of brevity, it is referred to as Calungsod Lounge.
Student Center 207 (StC 207) is dedicated to Fr Francisco Araneta SJ, one of the rectors who took the
responsibility of our educational institution in its early years. During his administration, Fr Araneta
paved the way of Ateneo de Cagayan to be granted with university status. The granting of such status
is a product of careful deliberation and judgment --- words that describe the general nature of work in
XU-CSGs Supreme Constitutional Court, and Autonomous Units. Student Center 207, or the third
office space of the student government, is named as Fr Francisco Araneta SJ Office of the Supreme
Constitutional Court and the Autonomous Units. For the purpose of brevity, it is referred to as
Araneta Office.

May these Jesuit personalities inspire the student leaders in XU-CSG to passionately fulfill their mission as
public servants.
