This thesis examines the popularity and acceptance of Cebuano-Visayan music among students at Cebu Normal University's College of Arts and Sciences (CNU-CAS). The study used a triangulation research method involving surveys, observations, and interviews with randomly selected CNU-CAS students across different year levels. The study found that CNU-CAS students tend to listen to more foreign music, especially English music, rather than Cebuano-Visayan music. However, students acknowledged that Cebuano-Visayan music should not be completely neglected. The university courses also influence students' exposure to Cebuano-Visayan music. ABSTRACT TITLE: THE POPULARITY AND ACCEPTANCE OF CEBUANO-VISAYAN MUSIC AMONG CNU-CAS STUDENTS AUTHORS: REPOLIDON, GERALDINE MAQUILAN TELERON, NICE ANN LIM SCHOOL: CEBU NORMAL UNIVERSITY DEGREE: BACHELOR OF ARTS IN COMMUNICATION ADVISER: DR. LEONORA DOTILLOS COMPLETED: FEBRUARY 2014
It has been observed that Cebuano-Visayan music is waning and the invasion of foreign music is even more dominant than our own music. Thus, this study is being conducted to determine the status of Cebuano-Visayan Music specifically among the students from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) of Cebu Normal University. The study used triangulation method: Survey, Observation and Interview from the randomly selected respondents from all year levels through conducting survey questionnaires. The study concluded that the CNU-CAS students are more inclined in listening to foreign music especially English music. However, the students admitted that the Cebuano-Visayan music should not be completely neglected. The study evaluated that the courses being xi
offered by the university also affect the behavior of the students toward exposing themselves to Cebuano-Visayan music. The media specially the radio has an important role in the preservation and promotion of Cebuano-Visayan music. This study strived to encourage all Cebuanos who have but one great passion and respect for music and is yet to become the persons behind reviving the Cebuano music. The findings of the study may be useful in future studies in reviving local music that goes with strengthening the foundation of cultures and heritage.
