The Sound of Music
MoorArts celebrates 16th
summer musical. PAGE 2
By KYLE CARNEY
The Sun
With World Cup fever rising
nationwide, Moorestown resi-
dents have allowed themselves to
partake in the madness, cheering
on the U.S. team and, in general,
appreciating the beauty of the
game.
I will say that before this
World Cup, I had hardly ever
watched soccer, Moorestown res-
ident Justin Weaver said as he
watched the July match against
Belgium, which saw the Ameri-
cans get knocked out of the tour-
nament. But now, Im glued to
the television every day. The
game is much more exciting than
I thought.
Weaver shares the sentiments
of many casual soccer fans who
are new to the sport, but have
found this World Cup intriguing.
I definitely never gave soccer
a real chance before the World
Cup, Will Allaire, another
Moorestown resident, said. I
guess I was like most Americans.
I just thought it was a bunch of
guys falling and rolling around
on the ground. But when you real-
ly watch it, these games are more
intense than any sport Ive ever
seen.
This has been a particularly ex-
citing World Cup, with goal scor-
ing records and late game hero-
ics. During the group stage, there
were 136 goals scored, which
amounts to nearly 3.5 per game.
The scoring is a big part of
why I have been watching these
games, Allaire said. All you
ever hear as Americans is soccer
games always end 1-0 or 0-0. And
then, I started watching this tour-
nament, and these guys are scor-
ing goals left and right.
The frenetic pace and goal scor-
ing has not deterred lifelong fans
either. While so much is being
made about the casual fans enjoy-
ing the games, those fans who
wait four years for this to come
around are also enjoying this im-
mensely.
Of course, you love to see so
many people coming out to watch
the games and to hear all the
radio and television programs
talking about the games, Robert
Cooney, a soccer enthusiast, said.
I grew up watching soccer, so I
am always invested, and I love
that this years tournament is
breaking goal scoring records.
According to ESPN, the televi-
sion rating for the World Cup has
been the best for a non-football
event in the network's history.
This statistic has raised more
questions than it has answered,
however. Namely, what does this
tournament do for soccer in
America moving forward?
I hate to say it, but I probably
Moorestown catches World Cup fever
KYLE CARNEY/he Sun
United States fans watch in earnest at P.J. Whelihans in Moorestown on July 1, as the American team
fell to Belgium 2-1 in overtime. This World Cup has brought more attention to the game of soccer than
ever before, with television ratings soaring through the roof. It was an impressive run for the Americans,
making it out of the Group of Death and showcasing the talent of the young generation that will be
needed in World Cup 2018.
World Cup catches U.S. by storm, with many Moorestown residents sharing in the excitement

MoorArts will begin its sum-
mer performances of The Sound
of Music on July 11, marking the
16th year MoorArts has put on a
summer musical.
As an art advocacy group,
MoorArts is in a unique posi-
tion, Communications Director
Candace Coleman said. Our mis-
sion is to expose the community
to art in every form, and our sum-
mer musical is a crucial part of
that goal.
The 36-member cast consists of
performers from ages 9 through
60, all of whom come from the re-
gion and auditioned for their
roles. Director Al Fuchs double
cast the youngest members to
give more budding performers a
chance to shine, as well.
We want to get as many people
involved as possible, Coleman
said. Our cast features some who
have been performing for
decades, and others who have
never stepped onto a stage before.
And thats what we want. We
want to give people a chance to
find art.
Fuchs, a Haddonfield resident,
has played an integral part in the
process, bringing with him a lot
of the production crew. He also
has a long history with The
Sound of Music, having por-
trayed every male role during his
more than 20 years with the musi-
cal.
This is a show that touches
every generation; almost every-
one knows the lyrics, Fuchs
said. I was inspired by the fact
that it is based on a true story, and
even had the chance to meet
Maria Trapp while vacationing at
the Trapp villa.
The production will also fea-
ture a live 24-piece pit orchestra,
which will showcase the score
from the final collaboration be-
tween Rodgers and Hammerstein.

f you have a child in public school,
chances are that you are well-in-
formed as to what the Partnership
for Assessment of Readiness for Col-
lege and Careers, or PARCC, is.
As a quick refresher, its a new on-
line platform that students in grades
four through eight will take instead of
their former state standardized tests.
PARCC aligns with the new Common
Core State Standards, which has more
rigorous benchmarks for student
learning.
No longer will students take the tra-
ditional tests we grew up with a
Scantron form that we used a No. 2
pencil to complete. Instead, students
will take math and language arts tests
completely online.
PARCC testing begins in the fall at
public schools throughout New Jersey,
apparently whether local school dis-
tricts are technologically ready for it
or not. Some of the districts we cover
in both Princeton and South Jersey
have expressed concern about their
readiness for administering the tests.
Thats a problem. But, as these same
districts have said, they dont have a
choice. The PARCC testing is signed
into state law, and there is no turning
back at this point.
One of the more concerning aspects
of PARCC, though, isnt how its ad-
ministered or the content of the tests
themselves; its the fact that the results
of the tests will be given major weight
in the judgment of teachers and ad-
ministrators.
The formula in place says student
progress on state testing will make up
30 percent of an evaluation for teach-
ers in grades four through eight.
While we arent against using test re-
sults to judge teachers, at least in part,
we dont believe that now is the time to
dive head-first into holding them ac-
countable for testing for which their
district might not be prepared.
The state Assembly passed a bill last
week that would delay this judgment
on teachers until the kinks are ironed
out. The state Senate delayed a vote,
opting instead to wait for direction
from Gov. Christie, whos expected to
issue an executive order reducing the
weight of the test results in teacher
evaluations in the short term.
We back this thinking 100 percent.
Having some objective measurers
such as test results to evaluate teach-
ers is valuable.
In the past, all anyone had to go on
was subjective matters. But giving
such heavy weight to test results when
there are so many issues surrounding
the administration of that test is un-
fair.
Its the states job to ensure its
school districts are up to speed on
PARCC before it starts using it against
our teachers.
Delay the judgment of teachers
PARCC testing needs to be ironed out first, before we hold our teachers to results

tests, Common Core or using test results

New superintendent thrilled to
be in his position permanently
Recently, the Board of Education of the
Moorestown Township Public Schools ap-
proved a three-year contract appointing me
as superintendent commencing July 1.
Needless to say, I am thrilled and honored
by this vote of confidence to serve as the
educational leader of this wonderful com-
munity.
As you may know, I had completed a 36-
year educational career last Aug. 1 in Corn-
wall, N.Y., where I had served as superin-
tendent for nine years after several leader-
ship positions in that state.
I am starting a new professional chapter
here in Moorestown, and I fully dedicate
and commit myself to the children, staff
and the entire Moorestown educational
community for at least the next three
years.
My accomplishments and successes
have been the result of a truly collabora-
tive leadership style working very closely
with all related organizations, con-
stituents, municipal jurisdictions and es-
pecially, the school-based groups, including
the Board of Education, administrators,
teachers, support staff and most impor-
tantly, the students. I will work toward cre-
ating a collaborative climate of respect,
professionalism, pride and accountability
within this outstanding educational com-
munity.
We can accomplish so much more work-
ing together in the best interests of our
children to ensure their success, and I will
work toward creating that spirit of cooper-
ation.
We have our challenges facing us with
decreased state aid and increasing costs

making it extremely difficult to
maintain all existing programs
while faced with a mandated tax
cap. We will carefully evaluate all
programs, looking for ways to
continue delivering our success,
perhaps, in a better cost effective
way.
The board is committed into
looking at different ways to gen-
erate additional revenue for the
district including, but not limited
to:
Better utilization and realiza-
tion of revenue from the use of
our facilities
Delivery of supplemental
paid educational services and
leveraging of our physical and in-
trinsic assets to develop direct
giving and sponsorships. Some
examples of these would be the
use of our elementary schools for
extended-day cares, sporting and
other events conducted by outside
organizations, summer pro-
grams, etc.
Also, college preparatory in-
struction, expanded summer en-
richment, child care, tuition pay-
ing students from other districts,
sponsorships with local and/or
national businesses, residents
and other supporters.
This could include building
naming rights, co-branded mate-
rials or programs and direct mon-
etary gifts.
I look forward to this great op-
portunity of bringing together
and working with our existing
and invaluable organizations
such as the Home and School As-
sociation and the Moorestown Ed-
ucational Foundation.
The mission of these organiza-
tions is to benefit the quality edu-
cational programs that directly
ensure the success of our stu-
dents.
In addition, I look forward to
working with MoorArts, SpEAC,
PACE, CASA, the Moorestown
Business Association, Depart-
ment of Recreation and the Town-
ship of Moorestown in realizing
our mission.
Lastly, the strength of our ef-
forts lie on the strong partnership
that I strive for amongst the
Board of Education, central ad-
ministration, the Moorestown
Administrators Association and
the Moorestown Educational As-
sociation.
It is my hope that through long-
range strategic planning, we can
all work together to effectively
use all of our collective resources
to achieve our educational goals.
The children of Moorestown
need our help in making sure that
they receive nothing but the ab-
solute finest K-12 education to en-
sure their future success.
I look forward to making this
happen as a result of a dedication
and commitment from all of us to
work together in a climate of re-
spect, professionalism, pride and
accountability.
Have a wonderful summer!

We are very excited about
every part of this musical, Cole-
man said. From the performers
to the orchestra to the directors to
the community, every part of this
has been a wonderful experience,
and its all for a good cause.
The proceeds from the musical
will fund student scholarships
and teacher grants in the fine and
performing arts.
The more people we can get
involved the better, Coleman
said. We hope that the grants
and scholarships we help fund
will expose more students to the
possibilities in art. Not just act-
ing, but any art form.
The Sound of Music will be
performed on the stage of the
Moorestown High School audito-
rium. The performances will take
place at 8 p.m. on July 11, 12, 16, 18
and 19; 7 p.m. on July 13; and 2
p.m. matinees on July 13 and 19.
For ticket information, visit

Also new this year is an en-
hanced version of the perform-
ance for the July 19 matinee that
will broaden the accessibility to
guests with special needs. Accom-
modations include ASL interpre-
tation, touch tour before the per-
formance, sensory/quiet area,
family bathroom and more pro-
vided by experts in the field of
special needs.
Performances will be
held in the Moorestown

wont follow soccer after this tour-
nament, Weaver said. I love
watching these games, but after
the nationalism is gone, I just
dont think its going to be excit-
ing anymore.
That is not the sentiment
shared by all, however. Die-hard
fans such as Cooney say they will
continue to watch no matter
what, and even casual fans such
as Allaire say they will certainly
pay more attention now.
Im certainly not going to
watch a soccer game when a foot-
ball game is on, but now that I
have seen just how exciting the
games are, Im going to try to
keep up with it, Allaire said.
The most important thing is
now I know players names and
where they play and what they
look like, so when I turn on a
game during the season, Ill rec-
ognize some of them.
