4. Structure, arrangement and operation of cargo hatch covers
4.1. Hatch cover N1 (B616-266.00-204).
4.1.1. The cover consists of one leaf, four hydraulic actuators of drive of opening-closing,
hand dogs for leaf dogging in for sea position, stopper for fixation of leaf sections in open
position, four devices with hydraulic actuators to lift leaf rolls.
4.1.2. A leaf consists of four sections, that are a metal construction, being composed of
plating, longitudinal and transverse framing.
The first section (driving) is fitted with two hinges to the foundation rigidly connected to the
ships hull, the second (driven) is fitted hingedly, connected to the driving section with the
help of intersectional loops, the third is fitted hingedly, connected to the second with the
help of intersectional eye bars, the fourth is fitted hingedly, connected to the third with the
help of intersectional loops.
The rolls are located at the corners of the third and forth sections, with the help of which the
leaf is leant on ways (guiding rails) when hold opening-closing.
4.1.3. Power hydraulic cylinders are mounted at hatch coaming angles. At the same time
two hydraulic cylinders are located under power loops of the driven section and stocks
connected to them. Hydraulic cylinders are connected to butt ends, located on the main
deck, by means of the hull eye ends.
Two other cylinders are located in way of loops but removed over hatch coaming to
the shipside and are connected to lifting bar by means of stocks, and are connected to butt
ends, located on the main deck, by means of the hull eye ends.
4.1.4. Lifting mechanisms of the leaf are located on both sides of the cover on longitudinal
coaming under sections rollers. Each mechanism consists of a hydraulic cylinder, support,
guides and butt end. Casing of hydraulic cylinder is connected to the hull by means of butt
end, and the stock is connected to support. Support is moving along the guides upright,
influencing upon the section roller with its supporting part.
4.1.5. Closing process is carried out as follows:
1. Hand release of dogs;
2. Hydraulic cylinders are started to lift leaf rollers, lifting the leaf up to the level of track
ways, and at the same time a rubber gasket is removed from sealing collar. After that the
power hydraulic cylinders are switched on to open the first pair of sections. The first pair of
sections is stored behind the hatch. The second pair of sections approaches to the initial
position for opening, then power hydraulic cylinders of the second pair is switched on.
Final open position of sections is defined by supports mounted on the hull constructions;
3. Stoppers of open position are applied and a hydraulic drive is disconnected.
While hatch closing a lifting drive of rollers is started, next the hydraulic cylinders of the first
and second pair of sections for opening are started; the stoppers of open position are
removed. Then the hydraulic cylinders of the second pair for closing after full unfolding of
the section second pair the hydraulic cylinders of the first pair for closing are started. After
full leaf unfolding the hydraulic cylinders of the rollers lifting are switched for lowering. A leaf
is lowered on supports located on coaming of the ship, at the same time the rubber gasket
abuts on the sealing collar. The hydraulic drive is disconnected and dog is applied by hand.
4.2. Hatch cover N2 (B616-266.00-205).
4.2.1. Structure and N2 hatch closing procedure is equal to N1hatch closing.

5.3. Structure, mechanisms and operation of hydraulic drives.
5.3.1. Schematic diagram of hydraulic drives of hatch covers are shown in the drawing
B616-266.00-200
Hydraulic drives of hatch covers are divided into 2 groups:
- hydraulic drives of hatch closing N1 MD with power supply a pump with
controllable working volume pos.1.7.1.
- hydraulic drives of hatch closing N2 MD with power supply a pump with
controllable working volume pos.1.7.1.
Operation of hydraulic drive of spud pole is provided from hydraulic drive of hatch
covers, see drawing 616.360062.010.
Hydraulic drives of hatch covers are designed according to el. pump drives of constant
pressure with throttle control and opened circulation of hydraulic fluid. Safety valves and
filters of hand control hydraulic distributors are included to pumps pressure lines.
Pressure control of hydraulic fluid is carried out with the help of portable manometers.
Shutoff valve is included between pressure lines of power pumps. Cross operation of
power pumps is provided by means of this shutoff valve.
Pumping installation contains the following elements:
1. Hydraulic tank, volume of hydraulic fluid is V=0,8m
3
, which guarantees standard
working conditions of hydraulic drives.
2. Two hydraulic pumps.
3. Relay of oil level.
4. Thermostat (sensor of temperature relay).
5. Two pressure relay (for each pumps pressure lines).
6. El. oil heater.
All these elements are located on hydraulic tank.
Control desks consist of the following:
- hand control hydraulic distributors
- safety valves
- valves which take loading (hydraulic locks)
Control desks are located at coaming of each hold on starboard.
Let us view the hydraulic drive operation by the example of N1 hatch closing MD
(see drawing 616-266.00-2003).
The hydraulic drive of N1 hatch closing MD consists of hydraulic cylinders pos.23 of
the first pair of leaf sections, hydraulic cylinders pos.22 of the second pair of leaf sections,

hydraulic cylinders of rollers lifting pos.21, hydraulic distributors pos.3.11, 3.21, 3.31,
safety valves pos. 3.12. 3.22, 3.32, valves which take loading pos. 3.13, 3.23, 3.33.
Order of opening closing:
- a leaf is lifted with four hydraulic cylinders pos. 21 up to stop. Supporting rollers of the
leaf are placed on the level of guide ways stretching along the hatch coaming;
- hydraulic cylinders pos.23 lift the driving pair of leaf sections up to the stop. At the same
time the driven pair of the sections is rolling along the hold towards the side of opening;
- hydraulic cylinders pos.22 rotate levers which lift the driven pair of leaf sections up to
stop.
Closing process is carried our in the reverse order.
5.4. Pumping installation contains the following components of electric system:
- two electric motors driving hydraulic pumps 1.7.1. Electric motors power supply 3-
phase AC 380/220V, 50 Hz. Rated power of the electric motor is 28 kW.
- level relay 1.3;
- thermostat 1.5;
- two pressure relay 1.20;
- electric heater of oil 1.21. Heater power supply 3-phase AC 380/220 V, 50 Hz. Rated
power of the heater is 1,08 kW;
- switchboard of control and alarm 1.31.
All these elements are located on oil tank.
5.4.1. Hand control hydraulic distributors, supplying oil to hydraulic cylinders, are
combined into blocks 2.0, 3.0.
5.4.2. Thee are two local control button desks of pumps. They are disposed near to
blocks of distribution. There is one button STOP and START on each control desk.
5.4.3. Button EMERGENCY STOP is disposed near to the door of pumping installation
room withoutside.
5.4.4. Operator turns on or off one of the pumps, pressing the button START or
STOP on one of the local control desks or on el. control and alarm switchboard 1.31 in
engine room. The further mechanisms operation is set by hand by means of moving the
control handles of hydraulic distributors.
Pumps operating mode selection is made with a switch on the el. control and alarm
switchboard 1.31
5.4.5. Loading at electric motors start depends on oil temperature and does not exceed
10 % of maximum one.
5.4.6. The pump is started with pushing the button START and is shut down with
pushing the button STOP on the local control desk, located near to a block of
mechanism control apparatus.
5.4.7. The pump is to shut down automatically in 20 minutes after pushing the button
START in every operating mode of the drives. If after automatic stop the pump is
needed to keep working, the pump is repeatedly started by means of pushing the button
START.
5.4.8. Pushing the button EMERGENCY STOP, located in front of the entrance to the
engine room, stops both of the pumps.
5.4.9. Thermostat 1.5 has three contacts that are switched in turn as far as oil temperature
increase. When the first contact responds at temperature lower than 10C the oil heater
1.21 starts; when the second contact responds at temperature 20C the heater shuts
down; when the third contact responds at temperature 60C both pumps are shut down.
5.4.10. Level relay 1.3 has one contact, switching when the oil level in the tank is lower
than it is allowable. At that both pumps are shut down.
5.4.11. Pressure relay 1.20 has one contact, switching when the pressure in pumping
main is lower that 10 bar. At that the proper pump is shut down.

Pressure relay response, as a rule, is caused by density loss of hydraulic system.
Therefore the pump reclosing is possible only after unblocking by means of the switch
located in the control and alarm switchboard.
To exclude false stops of pumps caused by pressure disturbance at transient processes in
the hydraulic system, delay time of 2-5 sec. is to be prior to pumps shutoff.
5.5. The pump should stop automatically if pressure in the pumping main is less than 10
bar, that is a sign of destruction of any component of hydraulic system. At the same time
the second pump may keep operating.
6. Trials and amounts of extreme deviations of principal dimensions
6.1 The installed on the ship cargo hatch covers will be subject to the following trails
according to the program and test procedure
616-266.00-200 :
- trials when in use; i.e. folding and unfolding of the sections will be checked;
- water tightness testing;
Water tightness testing will be carried out with watering from a hose lying within 1-2
meters off the tested place, passage velocity of the directed jet along the perimeter of leaf
sections is no more than 2 m/min.
Weld seams of plating, walls and shelves of strong beams in sections will be checked
selectively with radiographing or ultrasonic instrument in volume of 10 % of the total extent
of weld seams in a section.
Extreme deviations of details dimensions of the welded structures will be assigned as
per ISO standards quality norm No.16 each.
Sections are envisaged to be made with extreme deviations of diagonal dimensions
within 5 mm.
