Architectural Styles From Life
Have you ever thought about architectural styles? Architecture is a process and designing like
buildings and other physical structures. Architecture is the most comprehensive profession in
the world. Architect can make a lot of structure. for example; religious buildings, palaces,
stadium, coliseum even landscape. Architectural structures should have three features. First
feature, structures should be useful for all people. Another thing, structures should transfer
different thinking. The most important feature, structures should stand robust. People said a
lot of thing for architectural structures in history. According to vitruvius, a good building
should satisfy the three principles of Utilitas,Firmitas,Venustas.Architectural styles is a
mirror of society. Architectural styles are affected from history like people. Architectural
styles are changing with different reasons. For example; religion, faith, fashion , new
technology and new idea. There are a lot of architectural styles in history. For instance;
Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque , Modernism, Post-modernism, Islamic etc...There are three
styles in chronological order. These styles affected each other. In order to compare styles. The
most ideal styles are Gothic architectural, Renaissance architectural and Baroque
architectural.
Gothic is an architectural style. It spreaded to europe from france. This style contiuned until
the 16th century from the 12th century. Gothic architecture's greatest goal is to reach the god.
Religious life is very important in this period. Therefore, churches made different
architectural structures like cathedral. One of the most important Gothic cathedrals is Notre
Dame Cathedral in Paris. Each cathedral is higher than others in medieval. Gothic structures
created image vibrant and dynamic.

Gothic architectural roofs and wall systems have brought three innovations: Membrane &
vaults, retaining feet and retaining belts. Retaining feet and retaining belts created bearing
system. This system has enabled the development of Gothic architecture in horizontal. Thus
huge window used with vitray technique in gothic architectural. Vitray is a glass type from
colorful glasses in structures. According to researches ,The most impressive feature of the
period, glass were made with bible instead of wall in cathedral. Thus, all structure turned a
bible although people don't know literacy. On the other hand, there are too decorations of in
gothic architecture. Especially, walls and windows embroidered such as lace. This name is
gothic rococo. There are square or octagonal tower in facades. In addition, there are arrows
similar towers on the roofs. We are seeing gothic style not only architecture but also Picture,
goods, ornamental and sculpture .To summarize, if you want to see gothic style, you should
look Notre Dame Cathedral.
Another different architectural style is renaissance. Renaissance is a rebirth with art and
culture. People actions are changed topics outside of religion. Thus, art was independent from
church. Brunelleschi formed renaissance architectural style. He started motion against gothic
style in 14th century. He used classic architectural instead of gothic style in all architectural

structures. The name of this style is manieraallantica. First of all, Brunelleschi made
Floransadomu in taly.

Brunelleschi capitalized from Roman and Christian structures while he is making
Floransadomu. He used geometric forms unlike the gothic in space. There is logical,
mathematical thought in renaissance. On the other hand, there is religious thought in gothic.
Another differences are some rules and symmetry. For instance, there are straight lines in
facades. In addition floors were seperated from each other. Facades purified from too
decorations unlike gothic. There are domed structures instead of rising structures in
renaissance. There is up and deep motion in gothic. On the other hand, renaissance is
staionary. Therefore, renaissance style rejected rib and pilgrimage vault. In addition, samples
were taken roman bath and palace for roofs. ntemperance is essential in gothic however
balance is essential in renaissance. To sum up, Renaissance architectural style is completely
different from gothic.
Last architectural style is baroque. This style was very popular in europe and latin America.
Baroque style started motion against renaissance style in 17th century. According to the

renaissance of the structures have changed plans. Baroque architecture's greatest goal is create
gorgeousness and power with volume and decor. Gods and kings are monarch in this period.
Churches have made for god. Palaces have made for king. nteriors space is lighted in
structures. Dome and ceiling opens endless with photos. Organicity and naturalness are very
important unlike other architectural styles. There is privacy in baroque however there is
rationality in renaissance. We can see wavy lines in baroque. On the other hand, there are
straight lines in renaissance. We can see tilted lines not only facade but also plans in baroque.
Especially church plans. Light movements are started with wavy and tilted lines. Thus,
shadow games has been studied.Wide city squares and bright city occured with baroque
architectural style. There is nature form in fountains unlike renaissance architectural style.
Whereas, fountains made with straight form in renaissance. The most beautiful example is
trevi fountain.

There are three features this fountain. First feature, there are natural rock intertwined, Another
feature, water is flowing gradually. Last feature, Structure and sculpture merged. In briefly,
Baroque architectural style is completely different from other styles.
I have told three things about architectural styles like gothic, renaissance and baroque.
