Our Online classes are almost fully online, why? Because the student has to take all tests at a Testing Center not at home. 6 Introduction (Cont.) Exams can be taken within any of the DCCCD campuses except Richland, unfortunately Richland is not currently a choice. By the wayif you are thinkingalright this an online class, therefore, I got it madeplease re-think your strategy. There is no difference between this class and a regular on-campus class. The only difference between an online class and a non-online class is: the online student does not come to lecture or labotherwise the material in lecture as well as in Lab is exactly the same for both, no more no less. 7 Introduction (Cont.) Semester after semester I get the same questionstherefore I wrote this document. Please read itwhy? Well, 99.5% of your questions will be answered either here or in my FAQ (Frequently Ask Questions). McGraw Hill Connect Quizzes worth 15% Total of 100% 90-100% = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C 60-69% = D Below 59% = F 13 Where is all the material Where is all the class information? My website is located in a 3 rd party site called Box Net or a backup at Dropbox Can I leave you message in Box.net or Dropbox? Absolutely not. You need to e-mail me, at my e-mail: talegre@dcccd.edu I only respond to this e-mail and this e-mail only. 14 Where is all the material (Cont.) Where are the Power Points? They are in my website (A & P Website to the left in the e-campus site or in my other backup site in Dropbox). Where is the McGraw Hill Connect Material? For the McGraw Hill connect Material, the purchased of an Access Code as well as registration is required. Please see Quizzes and Instructions: McGraw Hill Connect located in your e-campus site to the left of the page in order to purchase and or register yourself. There are no deadlines for McGraw Hill Quizzes...but, you should take as indicated in your schedule. Why? In order to match the Power Point chapters as well as lab material. Also, students should not take 5 or 6 quizzes ahead of schedule, because that material has not yet been covered (it will not make that much sense). These McGraw Hill quizzes were built with the intention to help with lecture and lab material at hand. 15 What and how to study for this class? What and how should I study for the lecture exam? This is a very good question and probably the most important one of all. First of all, go to my A&P website and find the course Power Points (they are broken down by exams). Lets selected a slide from my power points (see next slide). The title of this power point is: The Specialties of Anatomy Do you see red and black in the page?. Well, I will be using the red as targets for my exam questions and for my exam review. Red is an exam review areaOK! 16 The Specialties of Anatomy Gross Anatomy or Macroscopic Anatomy includes: Surface anatomy: The study of general form and superficial markings. Regional anatomy: Focuses on the anatomical organization of specific areas of the body, such as the head (ear, nose, throat) neck, or trunk. Systemic anatomy Developmental anatomy (embryological) 1/1/2009 17 As a matter of Fact 1 o my exam question are comes from this slide! What and how to study for this class? Lets now select another power point (see next slide) This now with an illustration. This is an example of a diagram/illustration with red in it, in which by telling you know this/these Im letting you know that these are also targets for my exam review important. 18 Figure 1.3.3 Know These 1/1/2009 19 Introduction to the Organ Systems Rest assure another question in my exam will come from this slide! What and how to study for this class? Lets select another diagram or illustration (see next slide). This time with lots of red markings, but see that this time you do not see the words know this/these. There are going to be many, manyof these diagrams/illustrations with red all over but if they do not have the word know this/these, they are not exam review material. I hope you understand. If not read it again. All these red is utilized for teaching purposes. Summarizing: Remember: regular power points slides written in red means exam review material. Diagrams, illustrations, and charts with the word know this/these will contain exam review material. All other Diagrams, illustrations, and charts with red but not stamped with the word know this/these are NOT exam review materialOK!!!!! 20 Classification of epithelia 21 Figure 20.4 Same as Parietal Mesothilium 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Same as Visceral Mesothilium The Visceral or the Parietal Pericardium in combination with their respective connective tissue (in this case Areolar tissue for both) are call Serosa or also known as Serous Membrane. What and how to study for this class? (Cont.) Key point about understanding the REDVery Important: Quite Important, based on often prior misunderstandings in reference to what to study and the Red. Well, let me answer one very much ask question: Can I get an A If I study just the RED or basically that is all I need to study? To start addressing this question directly.well, think for just a secondif the red is all you needthen why should we bother with anything else: power points, textbook, notes, questions and answers, or even for those that take the class on-campus why even come to school? 22 What and how to study for this class? (Cont.) The RED in my power points, notes and/or flash cards is a way for me to indicate importantancy or a guide towards your exams or in other words an exam review material. In this way the student does not have to memorize a million thingsand you will know what material to focus on or to address with more emphasis. Here is the key! You need to know the red very well, but!!!! If you do not understand the surrounding black (the concept of what your are reading) you will for sure, experience problems in the exam. Especially choosing the correct answer within a particular multiple choicein other words, you are going to start guessing more and more based on the fact that all you are doing is using raw memory as the main way to study. The Black complements the Red. It is a marriage of convenience. 23 What and how to study for this class? (Cont.) By the way, every question you are been tested on, came from my power points/notes guarantee 100%. I review every exam every single semester due to student questions or commentsso by know these exam questions are super clean. What makes this or any A&P difficult is the large amount of material that needs to be digested, the study time needed or required and how good of a biological background you laready have on board. Just in case your thinking can I get an A in this class? Absolutely, I never had a semester in my life in which at least many students got As. So, in my class I always end up with students getting: As, Bs, Cs, Ds and Ws.the whole spectrum, the way it should be. By the way dont think an A is the only good grade, B is quite good and acceptable by all programs. 24 What and how to study for this class? (Cont.) What should I know for the Lab Exams or Practicums? Go to my A&P website and click the lab related tab. Here you will find: all 5 lab exam material you need to address and know in order to take each exam or practicums. This is your exam review. This power points includes all models, lab book exercises and illustrations. 25 What and how to study for this class? (Cont.) Summarizing: Go to lab related and know all the material address in each lab exam provided. I will be choosing (+/-) 17-22 Questions directly from lab book exercises. Also, (+/-) 8-12 questions from the models Therefore all Practicums/Lab exam will have a total of 25-35 multiple choice questions. If you are an on-campus student, please bring a Scantron to the lab. If you are an online student, you dont need a Scranton. The testing center will allow you to use scratch paper, if you ask. 26 What and how to study for this class? (Cont.) Power point review questions at the end of each power point presentation. At the end of each power point presentation I have incorporated review questions for the power points just covered. These questions are not just review for the power points but they complement the flash cards and they are excellent exam review as well. 27 What and how to study for this class? (Cont.) You told me to study the red in the Power points, but there was a few questions that I did not found in the redwhat is that all about? I hear this question every single semester, many times. Trust me it is all there. If you doubt me, come by and see the exam with me and I will show you that particular question and where it came from in the Power point. If you manage to find oneclearly not in my Power Point after you show mehey, Ill give to you for free. Yes, I know, it sound like the KIA commercial! But in my case it is true. 28 What and how to study for this class? (Cont.) How should I study, based on students who have done well inn the class. By now, Im certain you know how to study. But, based on many students who have taken this class and done well, they said the following: Understand the Power Points perfectly and when you have a question, clarify it in a textbook. Always study in intervals (it mean to study every day a portion not all at once the day or two before the exam). Study a solid 12-14 hours per week (usually this applies for regular semesters like fall or spring) 29 What and how to study for this class? (Cont.) In the last pages of each Power Point presentation (as mentioned) there are questions addressing the red and some black. These are fantastic questions for you to study. They go over the material and they are a good exam review source. Make sure to do them after finishing each power point section of the chapter. McGraw Hill Quizzes (15% of the course) are a fantastic way to get to know the material and do better in your examinations. After each chapter you can also do the flash cards (they are in the website under study aids), which again it deals with all the red from the Power points. Therefore, the flash cards and questions at the end of your power points have a lots of similarities. 30 What and how to study for this class? (Cont.) I also have some Fine Tuning Questions, that, if time permit you can practice some more (all under Student Aids). They are good to gage your knowledge of the material at hand. 31 Lecture Exams including Final Exam Questions You will have 5 Lecture exams worth 55%of your class grade. I will drop your lowest grade. You have to take all 5. Exams are 100% multiple choicessee class schedule for the amount of questions per exam. When is the deadline for all lecture or lab exam? Look at your class schedule it clearly tells you the deadlines and how many questions in each exam. All your exams are in your e-campus website.but you need a password in order to access them. The testing center are the only ones with access to these passwords, therefore you have to take all your exams at the Testing Center. 32 Lecture Exams including Final Exam Questions (Cont.) Which one is the hardest lecture exam? For 1407: exams 3, 4 and 5 are the more challenging based on material. Therefore, do not even think of dropping 1 or 2, use them as your pillow or reserve for the next 3 upcoming ones. For 1408: possibly 1 and 3. The degree of difficulty is base on the material been covered and student perception of the material been covered. Most likely, the more concepts in an exam the harder the exam becomes. Do you offer exam reviews? In reference to exams reviews, the red in my power points are an excellent source of review for your exams, therefore the questions at the end of each power point and the flash cards in the A&P website are the exam review. If I was to review the exam with my students, it will it be just going over these. The red in the power points is design with the idea to help the student know where to spend more time studying. Also McGraw Hill Quizzes are a good review tools! 33 Lecture Exams including Final Exam Questions (Cont.) Do Exams contain essays? No, there are no essays or pictures in the Lecture examsall questions are multiple choices. What did I get in my lecture test or where is my grade? Check your e-campus grade center. It will be there right after you take the exam. IN order to figure out your grade, DO NOT FOLLOW THE POINT SYSTEM IN YOUR GRADE CENTER! Only my Rubric If you need to know your grade average, my Rubric is the one. It allows you to calculate your grade very easily. 34 Lecture Exams including Final Exam Questions (Cont.) Can I retake an exam? Anatomy and Physiology exams are not to be taken more than once, that is why the student can drop their lowest test grade. This will not be fair and respectful to a couple of hundred students in my classes who did well in the exam and study extremely hard for their grade. 35 Lecture Exams including Final Exam Questions (Cont.) I had a true emergency; can you give me more time to take the exam? With a Medical or a family death excuse I can give you an extra 24-48 hours, more than that is when the student should understand/realize that base on their situation/issue or circumstances the best thing to do is to use this test as their dropping Lecture or Lab exam. Have in mind that: the student has 24 hours after the exam was given to contact me, ofcourse after the emergency, in order for me to help you re-scheduling this particular examination. If you think about it, base on what is going on (medical or death) you mind will not be in the right setting to take this particular exam. This is nobodys fault. 36 Lecture Exams including Final Exam Questions (Cont.) Can I get an extra day to take the exam? I need an extra day, since: I did not finish studying, I was out of town, I dont have a baby sitter, Im sick etc.? If you notice the deadlines for all the exams (lab or lecture), there is plentyplenty time. Therefore, it is and will be quite unfair to all your peers for me to give you an extra day and not to the rest. Only a proof hospitalization or a death in the family are the only things I and NLC considers an excuse. Im sure that other small emergencies can also happen, but if you give yourself extra time, pretty much all of them could be avoid. 37 Lecture Exams including Final Exam Questions (Cont.) Can I print, copy or review online one of your exams? Unfortunately not, these are refined questions that other instructors have put together and we have decided are good, fair, and adequate questions for all students at this level. What happen if Im caught cheating during a lecture or lab exam? A zero will be provided in that particular exam with no chances of dropping this particular exam (lab or lecture). Depending on the situation at hand more drastic measurements could applied. I took the exam and I have some questions, can I see the exam after the fact? You are welcome to my office or even during my labs. Please e- mail me and make an appointment with me. 38 Lecture Exams including Final Exam Questions (Cont.) Can I drop the last exam or final exam #5? You canif that was your lowest grade, but you have to take it. I dont want you to be deficient in some material that will be utilize next semester or in the coming classes. Remember A & P is the foundation to pretty much all your future science classes in your Allied Health/Nursing Programs. 39 Lecture Exams including Final Exam Questions (Cont.) The final exam? You will take the final exam at the testing center if you are an online student or in my classroom if you are an On-campus student (see deadline for both in the class schedule). This exam cannot be re-scheduled since the grades will be turn in to NLC the next day ASAP. If you cannot take this exam due to an emergency or due to testing center problems, (reason why we have the policy of dropping your lowest exam) this will be your dropping exam. Therefore in order to avoid this particular situation, please plan ahead and give yourself a time pillow. I will not give you an incomplete based on the above. 40 Lecture Exams including Final Exam Questions (Cont.) Can I get an Incomplete? To meet the requirements for an incomplete the student have to achieve no less than 90% of your entire course, in other words missing only our final exam. I will be dropping your last exam if this was the lowest grade or an excuse was provided. In plain words, an Incomplete can not happened since I drop your lowest exam grades for the lecture as well as your lab. 41 Lab Exams also known as Praticums You will have 5 Lab practicums worth 30%of your grade. I will drop your lowest grade. Practicums will be based on 25-35 questions. Practicals are multiple Choice. Just in case, and once again: If you are an on-campus student, please bring a Scantron to the lab for all 5 Lab Practicums. If you are an online student, you dont need a Scranton ( it is done in the computer). The testing center will allow you to use scratch paper, if you ask. 42 Lab Exams also known as Praticums Errors found in some of your lab book editions. In every old and new editions we will find errors. If you find one, let me know so I can deal with it. Remember all the answers for the lab book exercises are located at the back of the book. Can I drop the last lab practicum? Yes, you can. Lowest grade will be drop. It is NOT Recommended to drop an examination because you already have the desire grade. Knowledge is knowledge and you will see this material don the line. 43
