food
security
directory
of projects
Welcome to the Winnipeg Food Security Directory. It is a rst
attempt to begin cataloguing the variety of activity occurring
in Winnipeg under the banner food security. In here you will
nd a vast array of projects, organizations and enterprises, from
congregate meal programs to community kitchens, sustainable
agriculture through to restaurants featuring local, tasty Manitoba
made products.
This directory will be useful to anyone with an interest in local food
initiatives, whether you are trying to start your own community
food project or wanting to locate a retailer carrying Manitoba food
products. The summaries provided offer a snapshot of food-related
activities. We hope you will contact the people working in this eld
we cannot over-emphasize the importance networking and learning
from other peoples experience.
The listings included in this directory are certainly not comprehensive
or necessarily reective of all of the food security activity occurring in
our city. However, the directory should provide you with an overview of
the activities and actions occurring in our communities related to food
security, and to realize how food plays a central role in community and
economic development in Winnipeg.
In November of 2004, the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg (SPC)
acting under the guidance of a diverse and community-based Advisory
Committee received funding support from the Public Health Agency of
Canada to build a network with the capacity to respond to food security
issues in the city of Winnipeg through identifying local needs, priorities
and community objectives for health promotion and community
development/community economic development regarding food
security.
Our main activities are focused on:
Sharing of information and resources;
Public education/awareness and policy development;
Supporting local actions; and
Coalition building
More detailed information can be found on our web site
or by contacting the Project Coordinator, at 204.943.2561
