I became a Mac user about eight
years ago and I have never looked
back. Ive purchased many Apple
products since then, and while
all of them have been great,
Ive often wondered if I was
purchasing the right product
for the type of user I am. What I
mean is, is the MacBook Pro the
right model for me, or should I
have gone with the less expensive
MacBook Air? Would the 16GB
Wi-Fi iPad Air suit my needs
best, or should I buy the 64GB
3G version? Id love to read an
article that helps both novices
and expert users pick the right
products for them.

your most basic computing needs,

Has Apple
Stopped
Innovating?
Analysts look past iteration in
search of a new product category
BY MATT BOLTON
AFTER A DECADE of innovation, the companys well has run
dry, declared Howard Gold of The Wall Street Journal after
Apples last earnings call. Its a common complaint, and one
thats often countered by pointing out that Apples biggest
innovations have come several years apart its not fair to
demand a game-changer every year.
This is true, though it ignores just how fertile the mid-2000s
were for Apple: there was a major new product category or
fundamental shift coming every year, from the Mac mini in
2005 through to the Intel switch, the iPhone, the Apple TV, and

displays two years later in 2010. Since then, you could argue that
the iPad mini and Mac Pro are big additions, but largely, Apple
has released products that iterate on whats already there.
The question is whether more new product categories are

Super-resolution images could come

NOKIAS SMARTPHONE DIVISION
may have been officially acquired by
Microsoft, but that doesnt mean
that the long-time Apple rival gets
to enjoy the Finnish smartphone
makers talent as well. Former Nokia
camera engineering executive Ari
Partinen tweeted that he will start
a new chapter in Cupertino,
California in June. Heres why this
is a big deal.
Partinens influence can be found
throughout all levels of Nokias
mobile camera division, but hes
perhaps best known for his work in
developing Nokias PureView
technology. PureView-equipped
phones, such as the Nokia Lumia
1020 (pictured right), can take
41-megapixel images and smash
them down to smaller,
breathtakingly detailed
photographs with the help of
on-chip processing and pixel
oversampling. As a bonus, the
technology performs well in low
light and has a zoom function
that manages to maintain the
images high quality.

APPLE HAS ALREADY made a
name for itself with the impressive
capabilities of the camera in the
iPhone 5s, but Partinens
experience with Nokia could make a
great phone camera even better.
A quick look at Partinens
LinkedIn page states that he was
the Lumia Photography Lead at
Nokia, and his duties involved
working in the fields of mobile
photography, image quality
verification, verification
up-streaming, third-party
management and collaboration,
supplier collaboration and technical
marketing in multimedia segments.
Interestingly, Apple has already
filed a patent that covers super-
resolution based on optical image
stabilization, meaning that your
next iPhone (or more likely an
iPhone several generations down
the pipe) could rapidly take a series
of images at a range of slightly
offset angles. These images could
then be stitched together by a
proprietary image processing
engine, resulting in a super-
resolution image.
Who better to bring this to reality
than Ari Partinen?

Bigger iPhones,
Sharper Displays
Is Apple testing a 1704 x 960 pixel screen?
25
%
VI TAL
STATS
ONE OF the questions
surrounding Apples
rumored transition to
larger iPhones centers
on what Apple plans to
do with the devices
screen resolution, and
9to5Macs Mark
Gurman suggests that
Apple is testing an
improved 1704 x 960
display for the units.
Compare that to the
current resolution for
the iPhone 5s, which is
1136 x 640.
With those new
specs, any new 4.7- or
5.5-inch iPhones would
be able to give us
better images than
what were familiar
with from Retina
displays. In the case of
a 4.7-inch version, this
would create a display
with a resolution of 416
ppi and the same 16:9
ratio of the iPhone 5s;
a 5.5-inch unit would
theoretically sport the
same resolution but
feature a pixel density
of 356 ppi.
The report claims
that the enhanced
resolution will make
everything on the
screen sharper, but the
sizes of various icons
and screen elements
common to iOS will not
change. Most of the
changes in that regard
will come from third-
party developers, who
may simply take
advantage of the extra
screen space to insert
design elements that
had to be sacrificed for
smaller screens.
Playing devils
advocate, celebrated
analyst Ming Chi-Kuo
of KGI Securities, Inc.
claims that Apple will
not opt for an
increased resolution
out of a desire to
maintain some
uniformity in the way
apps look across
devices. He believes
that Apple will make
the 4.7-inch device with
a 1334 x 750 Retina
display, retaining the
existing pixel density of
326 pixels per inch.
Either way, well know
soon enough.

WHILE 2014S WWDC points the way to the next version of
the Mac OS, Apple released OS X 10.9.3 to general users last

with several minor improvements, the update enhances 4K

The new 4K support will allow objects in 4K displays to look

should be more visible. Rather than leaving users to blindly

display, Apple posted a support document (http://support.

as well as detailing DisplayPort-compatible 4K displays. A
handful of models from Sharp, ASUS, Dell, and Panasonic will
only support single-stream transport (SST) at 30Hz, while four
additional models can be set for 60Hz multi-stream transport

Beyond that, 10.9.3 is a relatively lightweight patch, with the

When creative giants like
Biz Stone squeeze their

life lessons worth listening
to. Twitters co-founder is a
case in point, and Stone tells
a fascinating story about
making something out of

unless you start with a good
idea. Contraints can challenge
creativity, but they can also
empower it. Twitters 140

it wasnt just memorable for

This is Sparta! No. It also
fused lmmaking and graphic-
novel style to dazzling effect.
Sure, the sequel doesnt have
the same visual impact but it
offers up more swords-and-
sandals fantasy. There are
more spectacular set-pieces
this time on dark, angry seas;
more bloody swords; more
stern, bearded faces, swinging
swords, and washboard-
chested warriors. And more
shouting. Its not high-art
cinema. But its certainly fun.

In this follow-up to 2012s
Blunderbuss (stranger and
more fascinating the closer

Stone), the former White

with a variety of musical
styles. High Ball Stepper,
the rst track to be released,
is a wash of reverberating
rock riffs and brisk Bluesy
piano bursts a powerful
and beguiling instrumental
from gentle beginning to
its raging end. The title
track, Lazaretto, is a more
traditional track, channeling a
funky 70s vibe with echoes of
Jamiroquai. The album will be
on iTunes starting June 10.

This quirky iOS title (originally
a Flash web game) gained a
cult following on Mac, PC, and
PlayStation 3/Vita. At rst
glance, its difcult to see
why. You control a series of
geometric shapes, navigating
through progressively
challenging blocky worlds. But
the abstract design, clever
platform puzzles, and offbeat
narrative voice-over (by
Brit author/humorist Danny
Wallace), make it something of
a treat. Dig it out. You wont
be disappointed.

WHILE WERE STILL WAITING for the cellphone industry to
come up with a solution for bricking stolen phones (and killing
the resale value in the process), Apples Find My iPhone feature
can help you keep track of your various devices in the event that
something gets lost or stolen.
Though its called Find My iPhone, the device-tracking
features work just as well for iPads and Macs. You just need to
make sure you activate the feature before one of your devices
gets lost. On a Mac, go to System Preferences > iCloud. Check the
box next to Find My Mac. For iOS devices, you can turn the feature
on at Settings > iCloud > Find My iPhone.
Once youve activated Find My iPhone, you can locate your
device by logging into your iCloud account. If your devices are
online, iCloud will display their locations on a map.
At the top of the window, click on All Devices to choose a
specic device. From there, you can use a couple of different
features to nd a lost or stolen Mac, iPhone, or iPad.
Play a Sound does exactly what it says on the tin. Your device
will repeatedly emit a high-pitched alert tone. This is useful if
youve lost your phone in your house, for example, and need help
locating it. The alert sounds at maximum volume, even if your
phone is switched to silent, or the ringer is set to a lower volume.
Stop the tone by clicking the button again on iCloud.com, or by
tapping or clicking the OK button on your Mac or iOS device.
Lost Mode lets you display a message on a lost device, such as
a contact number. It also enables you to see where a device has
been, so you can see if someone is moving with your device in

immediately requiring your passcode to unlock it.
If locking your device isnt enough security, you can also stop

of your device with the Erase function. On iOS 7, your device will
continue to display a custom message, even after being erased.
Your data is deleted and you still might get your phone back.

WITH iCLOUD EMAIL ALIASES
SIGNING UP FOR iCLOUD nets you 5GB of free storage
from Apple. But before you get too excited, realize that were
talking about 5GB per account, not per device. If you have
multiple Apple devices, theyll all be sharing the same 5GB.
Apple will be happy to sell you more storage space (See #9:
Buy More iCloud Storage), or you can use a few tips to better
manage the storage that you have.
On a Mac, go to System Preferences > iCloud and click
Manage.... iOS devices will nd the same controls in Settings >
iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage. From there, you
can manually control the data stored in your iCloud account.
Device backups frequently use the largest chunks of data.
Therefore, its a good idea to check to see if there are backups
in your iCloud account for old devices that you no longer use.
The second large space hog is usually your Camera Roll.
In most cases, you can remove Camera Roll from your device
backups, since you should be using Photo Stream (see #11:
Share and Sync Photos with PhotoStream) to sync your
photos anyway. When you turn the Camera Roll switch to Off,
backup copies of photos are deleted from your iCloud storage,
but the originals stay on your device.
If this doesnt clear out enough space, youll need to cull
your iCloud storage on a per-app basis. Switch them off
individually to reclaim space. And dont forget, your iCloud
email uses storage space, too.

YOUR iCLOUD ACCOUNT comes with 5GB of
free storage and Apple makes it easy to upgrade
it. Tiered plans start at 10GB for $20 all the way
up to $100 for 50GB of iCloud storage. Prices
are annual, and you can upgrade at any time
from your Mac or an iOS device. Heres how.
From your Mac, open System Preferences
and choose iCloud. To the right of the gauge that
shows your usage, click Manage.... The next pane
shows all of your iCloud data (see #5 Manage
Your Storage for tips on optimizing your data). In
the upper-right, click Buy More Storage....
From there, you can choose from Apples
various pricing options. Any space you buy is
in addition to your free 5GB, so buying 10 gives
you 15GB total. Chose your desired plan, and
click Next. Enter your Apple ID, and youre all
set. Plans are annual, and automatically renew
each year. If you end up buying too much space,
you can also downgrade your storage. The new
pricing will take effect on your next billing date.
You can also upgrade or downgrade your
iCloud storage from an iOS device. To do so, go
to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup. Tap Buy
More Storage, and choose from the available
options. Tap Buy, enter your Apple ID and your
password, and the changes to your account will
take effect.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN youre deep
into surng the web on your Mac, but then
its time to leave for work? You could
bookmark all the pages youve got open
and come back to them later. Or you could
even copy and paste a bunch of URLs into
an email and send it to yourself. Either
would work, but neither is particularly
elegant, nor does it take into account the
multiple screens and devices you interact
with every day.
With iCloud, you can instantly and
effortlessly send your open tabs to all
your other Macs or iOS devices. You can
even add items to a Reading List with a
single click, ensuring that you dont lose
important or interesting pages, even as
you go from home to the ofce and back.
iCloud can even tame your Bookmarks,
keeping them in sync across your devices
no matter when or where you add to
your collection of favorite browsing
destinations on the web.
Supercharging Safari with iCloud is
simple. On a Mac, head over to System
Preferences > iCloud, and make sure the
Safari switch is set to On. In iOS, youll
nd it under Settings > iCloud. Flip that
switch or check that box on all your Apple
gear, and your browsing experience will be
seamless across all your screens thanks to
this feature of iCloud.
To access iCloud bookmarks from
Safari on a Mac, click the cloud button in
your toolbar (if its not there, add it by
right-clicking the toolbar and choosing
Customize Toolbar). The pop-up menu
will display open tabs from your other
devices. On mobile Safari, tap the New
Page icon in the lower right, and swipe
upward to display tabs from other devices.
To use Reading List, simply click on
the Plus icon next to Safaris location bar.
The link will be added to your Reading
List, which can be explored by opening the
Sidebar and clicking the Reading List icon.
In iOS, access your Reading List items by
tapping on the Bookmarks icon.

CONTACTS & CALENDARS ANYWHERE
WITH iCLOUD.COM
AND SAVE YOURSELF TIME AND EFFORT
SURE, iCLOUD IS GREAT at keeping
your Contacts up to date across all your
devices. But dont forget that you can
also access contacts even without your
iPhone or Mac handy. Simply go online
and visit iCloud.com, enter your account
credentials, and click on the Contacts
icon. iCloud gives you full read and write
access to your iCloud contacts, which is
great for making changes on the go from
a borrowed computer, or in emergency
cases when you lose your iPhone. After all,
who remembers telephone numbers any
more? Certainly not us.
Any edits you make online will be
reected on your other devices, and
iClouds also got a few other handy tricks
up its sleeve that you might nd useful.
For example, did you know that when
viewing a Contact card on the web, you
can click the address to bring up a Google
Map of that location? Additionally, clicking
an email address will create an email using
your iCloud email address.
iClouds also got your calendars ready
to go wherever you happen to be. From
the iCloud.com web interface you can
check your calendars, create new events,
and even send event invitations, thanks to
its integration with your Contacts. Better
yet, any changes that you make to your
calendars are instantly available to all your
devices, syncing seamlessly via iCloud to
keep you right on time.

YOURE ALREADY USING
Documents in the Cloud,
right? If not, see number one
on this list. As the backbone
of iCloud, Documents is a
slick way to allow access
to all your important stuff
across multiple Macs (and
iOS devices). But what if
youd like to sync other
documents that you use from
multiple machines?
Of course, you could use
a third-party service like
Dropbox or SugarSync for
le syncing. Or you can trick
iCloud into syncing anything
you want, whether or not you
use it in iWork.
Youll need to make sure
that your iCloud account is
set up to use Documents
in the Cloud. To do that,
open System Preferences
and select iCloud. Scroll to
Documents & Data, and make
sure the option is checked.
Now all you need to
do is nd the folder that
iCloud uses to sync your
documents. OS X hides
certain system folders,
so youll have to enter
the path manually. From
Finder, choose Go > Go
to Folder... and enter: ~/
Library/. Find the folder
called Mobile Documents
this is where iCloud stores
your Documents to Go data.
To use it, simply drag les
or folders into this location.
To make it easier, you can
create an alias of the Mobile
Documents folder, and move
it to your Desktop or Dock
for quick access.
A (slight) word of warning,
however: this is denitely an
off-label use of iCloud. In our
tests, it works ne to sync
docs among several Macs,
but you should steer clear
of any of the other data les
inside that folder. You might
even want to add your own
les to a subfolder of Mobile
Documents, just to make it
even clearer which are your
own les, and which are data
les created by iCloud. While
this works for Macs, since
theres no way to navigate
iClouds le system on iOS,
you cant use this method to
move les on mobile devices.

room, with the long-rumored Apple
TV screen, or on the wrist, with the
iWatch, the current obsession of the
tech echo-chamber. So while we were
all looking there, suddenly the war
for tech dominance opened up on an
unexpected front: cars.
Apple introduced CarPlay, its iOS-
in-the-car system, at the Geneva
Motor Show in March, along with
Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo.
Attempts to get smartphones and, a
little longer ago, just your music into
the car are not new, whether thats
using an adapter that runs from your
iPods headphone jack to a fake
cassette, or the emerging MirrorLink
system that mirrors a smartphones
display to a screen in your car. But
CarPlay has been done with typical
Apple attention to detail and thats
what makes it interesting.
Connect your iPhone 5, 5c or 5s
to your car and you have access to a
range of built-in apps notably Maps
for turn-by-turn navigation, Music,
Messages and Phone as well as some
third-party apps such as Spotify on
the cars built-in display. Its not
just a dumb mirror of whats on your
iPhones screen, though. What you
see on the cars dashboard instead
is a version of the app optimized for
in-car use; that means big buttons,
decluttered interfaces and an
emphasis on Siri for hands- and
distraction-free interaction.
As well as those mentioned above,
Apple has partnered with Honda,
Hyundai, BMW, Ford, Mitsubishi,
Jaguar, Nissan, Peugeot, Citron,
Toyota and more. Were expecting to
see a trickle of CarPlay-enabled cars
on the road by the end of 2014.
ACTUALLY, DESCRIBING APPLE as

you the wrong impression.

This all sounds great, sure, but it
seems like youll have to buy a new car

currently impossible since not one is

saying exactly when cars will go on

>>> Future developments are at Apples
whim, too. For example, it has been
rumored that youll soon be able to
connect your iPhone wirelessly to a
CarPlay system rather than by the
Lightning cable, but Oberkersch is
cautious: As of now, Apple does not
support Wi-Fi within CarPlay. So an
announcement that CarPlay will work
with Wi-Fi could only be done by Apple
itself. Our engineers work together
with Apple on a daily basis, so as soon

when it comes to entertainment,
we would have to go down Mercedes or

is basically to fully replace the user

that will not make it a very useful

it seems like its basically up to Apple
which is unsurprising really since its a
feature of iOS.
Heres Ferrari again: CarPlay is a
feature that customers with iPhones
will be asking for the future and we will
support it as long as it is available.
And heres Benjamin Oberkersch of
Mercedez-Benz: CarPlay runs on the
iPhone, so as long as Apple supports
CarPlay, it might be used in our cars.
David Holecek at Volvo is even more
explicit in his assessment: Of course a
lot of this is a bit up to Apple in terms
of how they will continue evolving and
supporting CarPlay. I think that from

as Apple will announce news about
Wi-Fi, we will do so too!
It seems likely, then, that CarPlay
will be around at least for a few years,
but car makers are understandably
hedging their bets even if, for Ferrari,
90% of its customers use an iPhone.
Reading between the lines, it sounds
like an Android equivalent of CarPlay
isnt that far from launch. Were
working very closely together with
Google, Oberkersch says. As soon as
Google brings its own Android-based
vehicle infotainment system to market,
Mercedes-Benz customers will also be

Recording a podcast

by far the easiest way

though its not quite a

The best way to
handle things is for
everyone to record
their own audio (using
headphones), and
have the podcasts
designated editor put
them together in one
file. Get everyone to
clap at the start to
make it easier to sync
the parts later on.
If you dont mind
going a little cheaper,
you can simply record
the Skype call. The
best Mac tool for this
is Call Recorder from
Ecamm, which is $30.
Only one participant
needs it. This app can
automatically record,
and it can split a two-
person chat to make
it easier to edit.
The main problem
with using Skype is
that you cant avoid
people talking over
each other, brief
audio cut-outs and
other glitches, not
least if one persons
connection is poor.
Recording everyone
separately wont fix
that, but it will make
it easier to do things
like silence someone
whos accidentally
interrupted, and it
helps with general
editing and getting a
consistent volume. Its
a little more hassle to
set up, but the effort
pays dividends.
Co-recording a podcast using Skype is absolutely
possible, but be careful of practical problems.

downside? If you get a visitor spike, you could end up
paying a lot for it. You also dont get the stats and other
niceties that you do with a dedicated host.
With a decent omnidirectional
microphone, its possible to do a
group podcast with everyone
sitting around the mic and just
talking. But as ever, the easy
way isnt always the best. Doing
that is a problem if people
speak at different levels, or if
they are sitting at different
distances from the microphone.
In an ideal setup, everyone
needs their own microphone.
Unfortunately, your Mac only
has one line-in port, and it only
wants to handle one sound
device at once. Audio MIDI
Setup (found in Applications >
Utilities) does allow for creating
an "aggregate device" that pulls
in different sources, but its a
bit of a hack, and not ideal.
The fix is a dedicated audio
interface. The exact one to
use well, thats where things
get complicated. It depends on
how many inputs you need,
whether your requirements step
up all the way to needing a
full-on mixer, and whether your
microphone requires "phantom"
power that is, electricity
transferred into the microphone
through its regular audio cable
rather than directly.
The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is a
good starting point, at around
$150 for two XLR inputs, with a
light to indicate levels and
whether the volume is causing
clipping, plus a headphone jack
for monitoring.
Prices inevitably vary, but as
before, its not necessary to
spend a massive amount for
podcasting purposes. When
youre at the point of buying
dedicated equipment like this
though, its also not worth
buying the cheapest possible
option, either. Ambition has a
tendency to grow with
equipment, and therefore
spending a little more to get
better components will typically
result in better sound and fewer
blemishes, like crackling.

Hitman GO
An addictive stealth board game for iOS
$4.99 Developer Square Enix www.square-enix.com Platform Universal
Requirements iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 7.0 or later
Hitman GO takes place on a
series of game boards with
a grid overlay, populated
by security guards, night
watchmen, and unwitting police ofcers.
The iconically chrome-domed Agent 47
must sneak his way through each diorama,
one space at a time, while completing
objectives and avoiding detection by the
patrolling enemies.
If need be, Agent 47 can kill other
pieces by occupying their space on the
board. In keeping with the series tradition,
47 also has a few tricks at his disposal: a
well-thrown rock can distract a wandering
guard, for example, but a color-coded
disguise can fool him altogether. These
goodies add extra layers of complexity to
the puzzles on offer, but they build on a
solid foundation of stealth gameplay: line
of sight, pattern recognition, and timing
are just as important to Hitman GO as
they are in its freeform predecessors. This
version is to assassinations what chess
is to medieval warfare, and the result is a
more cerebral take on the series.
THE BOTTOM LINE. A clever and stylish
puzzler. Hitman GO brings elegant stealth
mechanics to a mobile platform and a fresh
genre to mine. JOSEPH LERAY
Microsoft PowerPoint for iPad
Presentations on the go
FREE (Office 365 subscription required) Developer Microsoft www.microsoft.com
Platform iPad Requirements iPad running iOS 7.0 or later
Together with Word and
Excel, PowerPoint for iPad
makes up Microsofts newly
mobilized Ofce trilogy.
This trio of apps feature a touchscreen
user interface often slicker than their
desktop equivalents, but more importantly,
documents can be opened and edited
with complete condence that theyll look
exactly as they do on Mac or PC.
Editing or sharing les from iPad
requires a monthly or annual Ofce 365
subscription otherwise, PowerPoint is
little more than a document viewer. At a
minimum of $6.99 per month or $69.99
per year, its an expensive proposition.
When viewed as a complement to an
existing Ofce 365 subscription, however,
PowerPoint for iPad delivers a lot of bang
for the buck, with an intuitive set of tools
for creating or editing presentations on
the go. The only real exception is when the
app winds up being hamstrung by iOS le
management restrictions.
For example, images from iPad photo
albums (including Camera Roll and iCloud)
can be imported with ease, but content
stored elsewhere is strictly off limits
including OneDrive, which is otherwise
the only cloud storage option available for
saving les. PowerPoint also isnt nearly
as robust as Apples Keynote when it
comes to playing completed slideshows.
Lecturers can scribble notes using a virtual
pen, but the app lacks any kind of true
presenter view and the AirPlay support is
frustratingly limited to mirroring for now.
THE BOTTOM LINE. PowerPoint for iPad
succeeds at making presentations nger
friendly, but Keynote still blows this app
out of the water when it comes to actually
showing them. J.R. BOOKWALTER

We're constantly stymied by blurry images,
and slow, clunky interfaces. Even the
simple, camera-based apps on our iPhones
have their shortcomings, and we often nd
ourselves retaking and cropping images
until we get them right.
With a gorgeous interface and a good
developer pedigree, we had high hopes for
Scanbot. There's a clean, simple aesthetic
that runs through every screen, helping
you capture and organize your documents
with ease. The priority here is speed, as
Scanbot's foolproof interface can attest
to, but it doesn't come at the expense
of professional features, including high-
resolution output, a low-light indicator,
and automatic edge detection. Our nal
products weren't always perfect, but the
powerful cropping tool and one-touch
enhancer ne-tuned things nicely.
Scanbot is the rst app from the
creators of the now-defunct doo storage
service, so we were hardly surprised to
see a tight integration with the cloud. But
we weren't expecting such comprehensive
synergy. Nearly every major service is
represented, and you can set your image
to automatically upload to your favorite.
The apps interface does a nice job of
prompting you with tips on how to take
better scans, but we would have liked a

straighten crooked scans and atten folds.

Tips and tricks for budding gardeners

Gardening may look easy,
but there's a subtle art to it.
Even if you're just growing
herbs on your windowsill,
each plant needs careful management, and
the slightest deviation in your watering or
fertilizing schedule can result in withered
leaves and small, undernourished stalks.
Garden Plan Pro thinks it can help. With a
comprehensive strategy that maps every
square inch of your plot of plants, the app
doesn't just keep track of your seedlings,
it offers tips and guidance that promise to
get your garden off the ground.
Freshly redesigned with a clean
iOS 7 aesthetic, you can make a scale

including any owerbeds, pathways,

searching for plants to add, you'll nd far

from shape-based blending and instead
approaches the process in a more
conventional manner. Union is designed to
combine images by knocking out specic

Unions process is based on three

can load any image from your device into
those three slots (but not snap a photo

T
heres really no other way of saying it: these
headphones cost more than $1,000. Thats
right, $1,099 for a pair of headphones,
enough to buy you 37 pairs of Apple EarPods;
22 iPod shufes; or the metaphysical concept of
shame. But suspend your disbelief and come with
us on a journey through the PM-1s credentials and
maybe, just maybe, youll get to the end of this
review in the belief that theyre worth it.
Oppo, of course, is better known for its kick-ass
Blu-ray players and more recently its Android
smartphones. The PM-1 headphones are the rst
such products Oppo has made, and the result of
many years of research, development, and testing
by a team of chemical and materials scientists,
acoustic engineers, and a ock of wild audiophiles
captured in the jungles of Madagascar.
These are not the rst headphones to carry
an extraordinary price tag. But what makes the
Oppos stand out is the technology inside them.
The PM-1s use a new implementation of planar
magnetic driver technology, which consists of
a super-thin, seven-layer diaphragm that has a
spiralling pattern of at conductors etched into
it on both sides. These conductors carry the
electrical signal from your music source, and are
suspended between precise magnets both in front
and behind. Because there are twice as many
conductors in a more dexterous magnetic eld,
you get higher sensitivity, better damping, and
more drive force.
On the outside, the planar magnetic Oppo PM-1s
are solid and sturdy, with lambskin-lined earpads
for maximum comfort. Theyre super comfortable
to wear even for very long periods. The principle
means of connecting the PM-1s to audio sources
is a removable 6.35mm OCC cable, but you also
get a 3.5mm cable for connecting to the standard
headphone ports on your everyday gadgets.
But of course, when youre wearing these
things, you dont care how they work or the
science behind them. All you want is for them
to sound interstellar. And they do. Weve never
listened to headphones that sound as clear,
precise, and potent as these. Under the right
conditions, the sound is mesmerising. For $1,099,
you would expect nothing less.
Were a bit of a clich when we test
headphones, always heading straight for the Pink
Floyd CDs. The pops and zips and beats of Animals
have never sounded so alive. Close your eyes,
and those initial acoustic calling-card twangs on
Wish You Were Here will convince you that Dave
Gilmour is performing live in front of you. Its the
subtle tones that stand out the most, coming
through with the kind of sonic denition you
normally only get from a live orchestra.
The practicality of the Oppo PM-1 is far more
questionable than the performance. Oppo says
theyre designed for all uses. But if youre going
to spend $1,099 on a pair of headphones like
this, you really do need to be listening to lossless
formats some of the time. Through a high-end
player and a headphone amp. In a soundproofed,
padded room. With the lights off. And youre going
to need a beard.
THE BOTTOM LINE. Brilliant, mesmerizing, and
spellbinding headphones. JAMES RIVINGTON

Family Tree Maker for Mac 3
Substance over style in the latest version of this genealogy app
$29.99 Developer Avanquest ancestryshop.com
Requirements OS X 10.5 or later, Intel CPU, DVD drive for installation, internet access for online features
The family history market has shifted in the
two years since Family Tree Maker for Mac 2
was released. Major updates to both Reunion
and MacFamilyTree have seen them close the
gap considerably, although FTM does manage
to stay on top just. This third iteration is a
relatively low-key release, concentrating on making
solid improvements.
There is one new feature of note: the Family
View. This provides a traditional top-down view
of your tree as an alternative to Pedigree View,
and makes it far easier to browse larger trees.
Version 2 introduced TreeSync, a means of
keeping your family history in sync between
Mac, Ancestry.com, and your iPhone or iPad
through the free Ancestry app. FTM 3 makes
this more reliable, plus it syncs a lot more
information between your devices. It also
tightens privacy controls by letting you mark
photos as private to prevent uploading.
There are still annoyances, most notably
that you can only link one tree to one computer
dw d wlph1 IWP 6 dovr vzlwfkhv oh irupdw wr
match the PC version, which means a lengthy
conversion if upgrading from version 2. The
process doesnt preserve TreeSync connections,
so you have to unlink the tree on Ancestry.com
ehiruh xsordglqj |rxu oh dv d qhz rqolqh wuhh1
Other changes wont set pulses racing, but
prove themselves where it matters, making
your family history that little bit easier to
manage. You can now copy and paste a persons
facts to someone else in your tree, retaining
all associated information. Better still, you
can paste the fact to the targets immediate
relatives at the same time, which is perfect for
census records and other shared events.
Other tweaks are similarly minor, but
welcome. A new global sort option lets you
display children by birth order, while you can
also more easily export individual branches of
your tree. The Places database has also been
tweaked, so locations can now be grouped by
city, state, or country. Duplicate facts are easily
merged, and a collection of new and improved
reports makes sharing research far simpler.
All of these tweaks strengthen FTMs
existing feature set, but its media management
tools continue to compare poorly to both
MacFamilyTree and Reunion, while the Smart
Stories narrative tool, introduced in the PC
version back in 2011, is still absent.
THE BOTTOM LINE. Gripes aside, Family Tree
Maker for Mac 3 is a worthy upgrade. It delivers
some solid improvements in key areas, helping
to keep its historically shaped nose ahead of its
nearest rivals. NICK PEERS

pples CarPlay is in the news (see page
34), but what if buying a new car isnt
possible in the next few years? As
alternatives go, perhaps Mobile Homes Siri
Remote will sufce. Its cheap, simple to set up,
and gives some access to iOS in the car.
Siri Remote is a Bluetooth-based patch-
through that links your cars hands-free function
(or equivalent third-party device) and Apples
Siri voice control system, giving access to the
iPhones Siri-based features as you drive. Its
single button duplicates the functionality of
holding the home button down on an iPhone to
wake up Siri. You can send and listen to texts,
emails, and social network updates, control music
playback, make phone calls, set up calendar
events, input navigation queries, and more. It
has no screen of any sort, so if you want to do
something that requires visual interaction with
iOS, you need to have your iPhone docked or
cradled somewhere on the dash.
Having full access to Siri in the car is pretty
exciting. Once the device has been set up you
dont have to worry about syncing it again. You
dont even need to turn it on and off. In our tests,
Siri works as well using the Remote as it does
directly on a phone. The catch? You need an
Internet connection to operate Siri, which is not
always possible on the move.
THE BOTTOM LINE. In some ways a joy to
use, in others very frustrating. In/out Internet
connections are a problem. JEREMY LAIRD

P
ortability seems to be ever more important to creative pros, with
powerful laptops such as the MacBook Pro with Retina display often
shedding as much weight as possible. Being thin and light often
means shedding a hard drive in favor of solid-state storage. Thats great for
performance, but it means paying through the nose for space.
If youre working with massive les on the move, you often cant do
without space and sacricing performance isnt an option. The My Passport
Pro might be the answer. Its a Thunderbolt drive that powers itself over a
single Thunderbolt cable, and contains two 1TB hard drives. You can choose
to have these arranged for performance as a striped RAID 0 array, meaning
that you get to use the full 2TB of space and also get the maximum possible
transfer speeds. Alternatively, you can have them set up as a mirrored
RAID 1 array, meaning that you sacrice performance and only effectively
use half of the storage space. But you get increased safety, because every
le is stored on both drives and you dont lose anything if one fails. A
dedicated Mac app makes it easy to switch between the options.
Portability is key. The drive is about 5.5 inches long, 3.15 inches wide and
1.06 inches thick. It weighs 1.01 pounds, which isnt overly heavy, but when
combined with its small size, it feels extremely dense. The solid aluminum
exterior adds to this. It feels like a really solid unit to hold.
The Thunderbolt cable is built into the unit, and when its not in use,
it wraps all the way around the outside in a rubber groove. Theres no
Thunderbolt passthrough (adding one would require an external power
supply a mains adapter making it less portable), so if youve got a
string of devices, this needs to go at the end. The silver and black color
scheme reects its premium standing, which is, in turn, reected in the
price. At $299 for the 2TB version, its not cheap, but neither is it totally
unreasonable. A 4TB version is also available, priced at $429.99.
Tested in the striped RAID 0 conguration, transfer speeds peaked at
over 200MB per second, which is superb for a non-SSD portable drive. Set
to mirrored RAID 1, speeds drop to around half. In use, the drive is quiet at
rst, but the fan at the back can kick up a pretty notable whirr thats high-
pitched, and yes, somewhat intrusive.
THE BOTTOM LINE. On the one hand, you could say that the Western
Digital My Passport Pro is just a faster, more spacious portable drive.
On the other hand, you might be a creative pro looking at a bus-powered
portable striped RAID and thinking I need this in my life! And you
probably wouldnt be wrong. MATT BOLTON

The rubberized UP24
comes in three sizes and

T
he smart and sporty Jawbone UP24 is the most fashionable,
lightweight and comfortable tness tracking wearable you can buy,
and it has a beautiful app to match. Of course, some functionality
is sacriced in the name of vanity. For starters, theres no display on the
device itself for on-demand workout stats or a web-based portal to chart the
quantied self data it silently collects. All metrics have to be synced to an
iOS app, but the UP24 improves over the original UP with Bluetooth wireless
syncing to make data uploads almost effortless. Battery life takes a hit, but
it will still last an impressive seven days.
As its name suggests, this new version of the UP can truly be worn 24
hours a day without the need to take it off between syncs. The exible
bracelet is coated with the same incredibly smooth non-latex rubber and if
you want to check your tness stats, you need to re up the companion iOS
app, which is full of rich color and helpful wellness tips, plus detailed activity
and sleep analysis tracking options.
Your activity is represented by a vertical orange bar that shoots up
with more physical movement and is based on the number of steps taken
and miles or kilometers traveled. Additional readouts include active time,
longest active time, longest idle time, total calories burned, active calories
burned and resting calories burned. Its almost the full spectrum of tness
metrics. Flights of stairs climbed is the one missing stat. Unlike the Fitbit
Force, theres no altimeter sensor inside.
But the Jawbone UP24 is arguably a more accurate tracker than the
Force and its idle alerts cause the bracelet to vibrate whenever youre
inactive for a set amount of time. Other exercise motivators include Today
I Will challenges (get to sleep earlier, drink more water, walk further, etc.)
and the ability to nd teammates among your contacts. The UP24s sleep
tracking capabilities, meanwhile, chart whether youre sound asleep, restless
or awake in bed. Its surprisingly accurate for a tness bracelet, which can

D
ark Energy is probably wondering when
battery technology will keep up with
everything else. Perhaps thats why we
have the Dark Energy Reservoir, an 8,000mAh
battery pack barely bigger than an iPhone.
The Dark Energy Reservoir is a small brick of
a battery. Two USB ports are used for charging
your devices, and the microUSB port between
them is used for charging the device itself.
Using the Reservoir is easy: when the battery
pack is fully charged, you simply plug your USB
cables into it and into your phone or tablet. It can
charge two devices at once, but thatll suck the
power out of the Reservoir a little quicker.
Once your devices are plugged in, you just
press the power button on the Dark Energy
Reservoir and theyll start charging. If there
arent any devices connected and you press
the power button, the light indicators will glow
to show you how much juice is left in the thing.
There are three dot lights, each representing
about 33% of battery life.
Having 8,000mAh in a slim, pocketable device
is hugely convenient, especially at a time where
our smartphones are getting greedier for more
juice. Our only gripe is the price. At $129, its
quite expensive. The Mophie Powerstation Duo,
with 12,000mAh is the same price, but you get
more capacity for your money.
THE BOTTOM LINE. Its easy to use, looks the
part, and gives you condence that your phone or
tablet wont die on you. MARC FLORES

all-important satellite signal.

O
wn something valuable and potentially
mobile and prone to theft? A motorcycle,
boat, car, RV or even an ATV? Wouldnt
it be good to track its position and even receive
automated alerts within moments should it
unexpectedly move? Enter the Spot Trace
personal GPS tracking device, a multi-purpose
GPS gizmo the size of a box of matches.
The basics of the Spot Trace involve a small
black box containing the GPS hardware and
motion detection. Its powered by four standard
AAA batteries (provided), delivering up to 18
months of battery life. You also get a mounting
cradle with a quartet of sharp screws and a
few adhesive pads. That gives you the option
of attaching the cradle permanently or simply
sticking the device on in a more temporary way.
As compact as the Spot Trace is, its worth
remembering that this is a GPS device and so
requires line of sight to function. Global Telesat
Communications, which manufactures the device,
says it can pick up satellites through breglass,
glass and fabric. But it wont operate through
metal. That places some limitations on where you
can locate the device.
Once congured, Spot Trace automatically
sends a text and or email with your assets GPS
coordinates when movement is detected. You can
also view and track online via a web interface.
Various alerts can be set up too, including for
movement, if the device has been turned off, or if
the battery is running low. You can also manage
and track multiple devices from one account.
The core functionality works via satellite,
including both GPS tracking and sending alerts.
So the device does not require an Internet
connection, allowing you to track objects beyond
cellular range, for instance on the open ocean.
If all that seems like a good deal, heres the
snag. Youll also need a service plan to use the
device. One year costs $99.95, with the Extreme
Tracking upgrade another $99.99. The basic plan
allows tracking every ve, 10, 30 or 60 mins. The
Extreme tracking plan improves on this, reducing
the intervals to 2.5 mins.
Both initial setup and the various web-based
interfaces can be a little confusing, although
its not entirely impenetrable. We werent sure
whether the device supported being attached to
an object that was located out of satellite range.
In other words, could you use the Spot Trace on
a car in a locked garage and rely on it to wake
up should the car leave that location? As it turns
out, the answer is no.
But for the most part, the Spot Trace works
pretty well. During our testing, we received email
alerts almost immediately once our test asset (a
car) started moving. If youre wondering about
accuracy, its in line with general GPS devices.
But since it doesnt use roads as reference
points, youll nd the accuracy isnt quite as
good as an in-car GPS. As for battery life, thats
tricky for us to judge denitively given the large
time frames. However, its claimed the absolute
worst case scenario for tracking a device thats
constantly moving is three days.
THE BOTTOM LINE. For tracking large objects,
such as vehicles, the Spot Trace could be just the
thing for peace of mind. That said, likely annual
fees for the basic service plan suggest that this
probably isnt a device for easy use by general
consumers. JEREMY LAIRD

The trouble with most supposedly wireless
network cameras is that while they may
connect wirelessly for data, they still need one
wire: power. This means that youre limited
in where you can place the cameras, because
they still need to be plugged in.
This is the problem Netgear has set out to

still, the cameras arent designed to be on all

A family member recently switched to a new iMac from a PC.
The data transfer went smoothly except that I cannot add
his Outlook calendar to the Mavericks calendar. In iOS 7, it
was easy because Outlook is one of the choices listed when
adding accounts. How can I do this on the Mac as well?
Unfortunately Microsoft Outlook
isnt actually available on the Mac, but
you can still add an Outlook calendar
and solve this problem if you have a
little patience.
If you are running OS X Mavericks,
head to System Preferences > Internet
Accounts, and click on the New Account
button (+). If your account supports
Exchange, then you can easily sign
in by clicking Exchange in the new
account selection panel, then entering
your account information. When you
complete the process, you will be able
to select the calendar feed.
If your Outlook account doesnt
support Exchange, then dont worry,
you are still in luck. Outlook.com gives
you the ability to generate an iCal feed
of your Calendar events that can be
imported into the Calendar application
on the Mac. And the good news is that
this process isnt difcult to do.
To start, simply navigate to your
Outlook web calendar, then click
Share > [The Name of Your Calendar
To Share]. Click the Get a Link option,
and you will be presented with a URL
for an ICS feed. Copy this URL and
navigate to Calendar > File > New
Calendar Subscription in the Calendar
application on your Mac. At this point,
simply, paste in the URL, and click the
Subscribe button.
Once youve subscribed to the
appropriate ICS feed, the new calendar
will appear in the sidebar of the OS X
Calendars application. Theres a catch,
however. This is a read-only feed,
which means that you cannot create
new events and have them synced
back to Outlook. Of course, you can
always import the imported calendar
locally, and then begin using iCloud
to sync your calendars in Mac OS X in
the normal way.
Sounds nasty
Whenever I try using headphones
with my iMac, the internal speakers
remain active, so I get audio
through the speakers in addition
to my headphones. Why is this
happening and how can I x it so the
Be sure to enter the calendar
feed URL exactly as it is shown
on the Outlook share page.
If your email account supports

sound is only coming through the
headphones output?
This is an issue that can easily
happen if you are using USB-based
headphones. By default, OS X will keep
playing sound through the internal
speakers even after a USB headset has
been connected. Fortunately, this is
easy to correct.
Follow these steps to correct the
issue, and get your Mac playing audio
through the desired location:
01. In the top left corner of the screen,
click on the Apple logo and select
System Preferences.
02. Select the Sound System
Preference Pane.
03. Go to both Output and Input,
and select your headset in both menus.
If the change does not take place
automatically, close the menu (by
pressing the red button in the top left
corner of the window), and reconnect
the headset.
This set of steps should only need
to be performed once when your
headphones experience this issue.
My insomniac Mac
I have a late 2012 iMac running
Mountain Lion, and Ive been having
trouble with my computer entering
sleep mode recently. Its supposed
to go to sleep after 30 minutes of
inactivity, but sometimes it simply
doesnt do it. Other times it wakes
up from sleep mode automatically,
and I come home to discover that the
computer has come to life without
me doing anything. Any ideas?
There could be several things that
are causing your Mac to wake up, or not
go to sleep, and it can be a bit difcult
to troubleshoot this issue to nd out
what that cause might be.
Apple does, however, provide a
Knowledge Base article on the issue.
This is an attempt to help users pick the
solution for their particular situation
and ensure that all settings are
properly enabled. It should help your
computer to both sleep properly and
stay asleep when you want it to.
Here are some of the highlights
of the tech note:
>
Energy-saving preferences could
be set improperly. Ensure that when
you go to System Preferences > Energy
Saver, that the slider for setting the
computers sleep setting is set the
way you wish.
>
Other users could be waking the
machine remotely using shared
resources. Ensure that if you connect
to your computer using network
access that you disconnect in order
for the computer to go to sleep. You
can disable network wake by going to
System Preferences > Energy Saver,
and unchecking the option for Wake
for Wi-Fi Access.

I can see that the email is

the content of the email.
Any email led in there

you may be experiencing
an issue where the email
accounts have become
corrupted over time. This
corruption can happen for
any number of reasons,
but is usually resolved very
easily by rebuilding your
email accounts.
To rebuild the Mailbox for
one of your accounts, select
the Mailbox or Folder in the
sidebar (if the sidebar isnt
shown, from the menu bar
select View > Show Mailbox
List), and then select
Mailbox > Rebuild. During
this rebuild, you should not
quit the Mail application.
This rebuild process will
remove all local copies of
messages on IMAP and
Exchange accounts, and will
re-download the messages
and attachments from
the server. Dont worry if
your mailbox looks empty
during this process it will
populate again once the re-
download completes.
You can use this rebuild
feature whenever you have
messages that appear
garbled, missing, or when
relevant emails dont show
up using a routine search
using the built-in Entire
Message feature.

First Contacts
Whats the best way to copy my
contacts and calendar information
from an iPad to an iMac running
Mavericks? The iMac is new and has
no information stored on it.
The best and easiest way to place
the contacts on the new Mac is to sync
them over to the computer using iCloud
sync for Calendars and Contacts. This
will ensure that the information stored
on your iPad is copied verbatim to the
other devices connected to your iCloud
account with any additional steps
involved, just as long as you have an
Internet connection.
To enable iCloud syncing on your
iOS device, navigate to Settings >
iCloud, and sign in with your iCloud
account. If you dont have an iCloud
account, then simply sign in with your
Apple ID and you will be prompted to
create one (you can also go to www.
icloud.com to sign up). After signing in
or signing up for a new account, simply
ensure that the options for Calendars
and Contacts are enabled.
Once you have enabled iCloud on
your iOS device, then you can sync
the stored contacts, calendars, and
more with your Mac. To do this, open
Apple menu > System Preferences
> iCloud, and sign in with the same
iCloud account that is used on your iOS
device. Once signed in, ensure that the
Contacts and Calendars options are
checked under the iCloud preferences.
The nice thing about this is that
when you make a change on your Mac
and iOS devices, all of the Calendar
and Contact changes will be (almost)
immediately synced between all of the
devices, keeping you up-to-date without
any worry of connecting up your
devices to each other manually.
Flying without pings
I frequently y on Alaska Airlines,
which uses GoGo In-Flight Internet.
I am unable to connect using my iPad

MacBooks using it without issue. Do
you have any suggestions to help?
In-Flight Wi-Fi can be tricky to get
to work from time to time, but there
are some troubleshooting steps that
you can do to x a device that wont
connect. Follow these steps, and you
should be able to connect without issue
to the In-Flight Wi-Fi:
>
Forget the network. The rst
thing that you should do if you are
experiencing an issue connecting to
the network is to navigate to Settings
> Network > [Network Name], and once
here tap Forget Network. After the
network has been removed from your
known networks, try connecting back
to the GoGo wireless network and
activating the connection again.

Please help. I believe
that I have accidentally
deleted some of the
default applications that
came with OS X, and Im
not sure how to go about
reinstalling them. Im
missing my entire Utilities
folder under Applications.
How can I get these
applications back onto my
computer system?
The default applications
bundled onto your system
usually requires messing
around with the Terminal
to remove them, and even
then, they can be difcult
to remove. Fortunately, you
can get them back by simply
reinstalling your version of
Mac OS X.
If you are running OS X
Lion or greater, then you
can start up your computer
using the Option key, and
select Recovery HD.
Selecting this option will
boot your computer into
the Recovery partition.
From here, select Reinstall
OS X, then follow the
instructions to reinstall.
When reinstalling OS X,
none of your content will be
overwritten, but you should
always create a backup
beforehand just to be
safe. Once reinstalled, the
default applications should
reappear on your Mac.
Reinstalling OS X is the only way to get back the default
applications once they have been removed from your system.
Once enabled on the Mac, your Contacts and
Calendars will begin syncing between the
Mac as well.

Pages problems
I upgraded to OS X (10.9.2
Mavericks), but I need to be able to
open an older Pages document that
was created with Pages version 4.3.
Since I upgraded to Pages 5.1 that
came with Mavericks, this operation

documents.
seems all but impossible. Can you
advise what I need to do in order to
open these documents?
Version 5.x of Pages will gladly
open documents created using Pages
4.x, however there are some caveats.
By default, whenever you have Pages
5.x installed on your Mac, older Pages
documents will open in the newest
version of Pages whenever you double-
click on the icon.
This may not always be the case,
so you may need to right-click on the
Pages document and select Get Info
(you can also click on the document
and press Command + I). Once you're in
the Get Info panel, youll need to ensure
that the newest version of Pages is
selected in the Open With drop-
down menu. This will ensure that the
correct version of Pages will open the
document on your system. This step
is important because 5.x documents
cannot be opened with Pages 4.x.
This is because Apple changed the le
format with the latest version of Pages.
You can also manually open the
document in the newest version of
the Pages software by dragging and
dropping the icon to the Dock icon for
Pages 5.x. This will force Pages 5.x to
open that document.
When you go to Save a Pages 4.x
document using the newest version
of Pages, you will be prompted to
Upgrade the document to the new 5.x
le format. You will have the option to
Make a Copy if you want to keep the
original 4.x document, or Upgrade
the document. Selecting Upgrade will
upgrade the existing document and
overwrite the older le format with
the newer one.
Of course, you may still need to
export your Pages 5.x documents to
the older format so that they will work
with older versions of Pages when
sending your documents to other
people. If this is the case, then you can
easily export a Pages 5.x document to
work with Pages 4.x. To do this, simply
open File > Export > Pages 09.
Apple TV tips
I use an Apple TV, and I was
wondering if there is any way to save
movies or a TV series that I want
to watch on my computer hard

drive so that I can watch them later?
I have DSL, which makes it difcult
to stream my shows. The old Apple
TV used to save my shows to its
built-in drive, so I could watch them
any time. Is there any way to do this
with the latest Apple TV?
Absolutely! Using AirPlay, you can
purchase your shows, movies, and
other iTunes Store content on your
computer using iTunes, then play it
back over your local network to the
Apple TV. Because streaming the
content from your computer to your
Apple TV happens locally, the speed
depends on your wireless router rather
than your Internet connection.
To begin, purchase any content from
the iTunes Store: Movies, Music, and TV
shows all work with AirPlay. Next, once
the content les have downloaded,
navigate to iTunes, and begin playing
the content using the latest version of
the iTunes software.
In the toolbar of iTunes, youll notice
an AirPlay icon (this is compatible
with all current generation Apple TV
hardware). Clicking this icon will show
a list of all the AirPlay-compatible
devices found on your local network.
Clicking one of these devices, then
playing the content through iTunes will
divert the currently playing content to

Selecting the

the remote AirPlay device on your local
network instead of playing the content
on your computer.
Another way to handle this is to set
up iTunes Home Sharing. To enable this,

Sync holes
When I got my new iPhone 5s, I did
a sync to iCloud. The problem was
there was music on the cloud that
I dont want any more. How can I
get rid of iCloud-stored music so it
doesnt re-sync every time I sync
back up with the cloud?
There are two ways that music
could sync to your device, and well
cover both of these ways and show you
how to get rid of the music that has
synced to your device.
The rst way that music can get
onto your device is through a feature
of iTunes in the Cloud, which is that
previous purchases will show up and
can be streamed to your device. You
are not able to get rid of music from
this section since music purchased from
your iTunes account is linked to your
account for the life of the account. To
disable iTunes in the Cloud purchases,
visit Settings > Music, and disable the
option for Show All Music. Disabling
this feature will ensure that all music
that has been downloaded or that is
stored in iCloud will no longer be shown
in the Music app.
Another feature that could be at
issue is iTunes Match. This paid feature
allows music that youve stored in your
iTunes library on your computer to sync
over the air to your iOS devices. This
option can be disabled By going back
into Settings > Music, and disabling
iTunes Match.
This will, of course, cause all songs
(not just the ones that you dont like)
to stop showing in the Music app. At
this point, Apple does not provide
ner-grained controls for picking which
music is synced to your mobile devices
through iTunes Match.

Mimic in-camera motion blur with help from Photoshop Elements
IF YOURE FEELING CREATIVE and

If your shutter speed is too fast, you wont see
much motion blur around the edge of the frame.
If the shutter speed is too slow, you run the risk of
blurring the subject as well as the images edges.
You may also over-expose the shot when shooting
with a slow shutter speed in bright sunlight.

HOW TO DO ANYTHING ON YOUR MAC, iPHONE & iPAD
CREATE

Crop the Shot
Open up your image in Photoshop Elements.
Click the Guided tab. Scroll to Photo Effects and click
Zoom Burst Effect. To crop the image, click the Crop
tool and drag the crop handles inwards. We dragged
the crop so the face was centered. Click OK.
Apply the Effect Manually
If you prefer, you can apply the Radial
lter manually while preserving the shots original
composition. Go to the Expert editing mode, and in the
Layers panel, click the Background layer, then choose
Layer > Duplicate Layer. Click OK.
Set Up the Brush Tool
Streaks of blur now come from the subjects
face (instead of from the center of the frame). Choose
Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All. Grab the Brush tool.
Choose a soft round tip from the Brush Preset picker.
We set the size so the tip covered his face.
Add the Zoom Burst Effect
Next, click the Add Zoom Burst button. This
uses the Radial Blur lter to make the streaks of motion
blur radiate from the center. Click the Add Focus Area
button. Drag across the face to ne-tune detail and
blur. Click Apply Vignette to darken the corners.
Adjust the Settings
Go to Filter > Blur > Radial Blur. Set Blur
Method to Zoom, Amount to 40, and Quality to Draft.
We dragged the Blur Center preview upwards so the
streaks of zoom blur emanated from nearer the top of
the frame (where the subjects eyes are). Click OK.
Blend the Sharp and Blurred
Click the layer mask, make sure black is the
foreground color, and paint over the face. This pokes
a hole in the blurred top layer, revealing the sharper
details below. Reduce the Opacity of the top layer to
93% to blend the zoom blur with the bottom layer.

How to Make Changes to Your Dock Using Terminal
Copy the Preferences
Before editing your Dock, make a
copy of its preferences le. In Finder, hold
Option and click Go in the top bar. From the
drop-down menu, select Library to open
the hidden user Library folder. Within, open
the Preferences folder and nd com.apple.
dock.plist. Now hold Option and drag the
le to the Desktop, thereby making a copy
of it. Store this in a folder elsewhere that
also includes the date the copy was made.
Restore Preferences
To restore your backed-up
preferences, copy the le you saved out in
Step 1 to your Librarys Preferences folder.
For Mountain Lion, entering killall Dock in
Terminal restarts old settings. Mavericks
has more aggressive caching, so type
defaults read in Terminal and drag the le
com.apple.dock.plist from the Library to it.
Hit Enter, then killall Dock to restart the
Dock with your settings.
Go Nuclear
Reverting the Dock to default
depends on the OS that you are running on
your Mac. In Mountain Lion, simply trash
com.apple.dock.plist from the Preferences
folder and use killall Dock in Terminal. For
Mavericks, delete the le from Terminal:
defaults delete com.apple.dock; killall
Dock. Or, reset the Dock to run apps with
defaults write com.apple.dock static-only
-bool true; killall Dock.
Design Your Own Dock
Make changes to your Dock, with spacers, stacks and visual effects
THE DOCK PANE within System

How to
Customise Your Dock
TAKE A
SHORTCUT
The idea of this tutorial is to update
the Dock and also familiarize yourself
with Terminal. However, if you want
Dock changes but dont fancy doing
any of that pesky typing, install
TinkerTool (http://bresink.com/osx/
TinkerTool.html) and use the various
options found within its Dock section.
Should you later decide you want to
revert all changes, TinkerTool has a
Reset option (to pre-TinkerTool state or
defaults), but also follow the three-
step back-up advice elsewhere before
using the app, just in case.
Pin the Dock
The Dock can be pinned to a
corner. Use defaults write com.apple.
dock pinning start; killall Dock and it
moves to the left or top. Use end instead
of start to move the Dock to the right/
bottom; middle is the default.
Adjust Dock
Transparency
Bring back Mountain Lions
transparency with defaults write
com.apple.dock hide-mirror
-bool true; killall Dock. To
make hidden apps icons semi-
transparent, use defaults write
com.apple.dock showhidden
-bool true; killall Dock. In both cases,
switching true for false reverts to
default settings.
Activate
Single-app Mode
OS X has a single-app mode, which
means if you click a Dock icon, every
other app is hidden. Activate using
defaults write com.apple.dock single-
app -bool true; killall Dock. Again,
replacing true with false reverts this
setting to OS Xs default.
Change the
Hiding Delay
Remove the show/hide animation with
defaults write com.apple.dock autohide-
time-modier -int 0; killall Dock. Revert
by using defaults write com.apple.dock
autohide-time-modier -oat 1; killall
Dock, or adjust 1 to experiment with
different animation speeds for example,
0.5 is faster (half the time) and 2 is
slower (twice the time).
Add App Spacers
Invisible spacers can be
added to group apps. Each time you
use this command, a new spacer is
added: defaults write com.apple.dock
persistent-apps -array-add {tile-
data={}; tile-type=spacer-tile;};
killall Dock. Replace persistent-apps
with persistent-others to place a spacer
on the right-hand side of the Dock. To
get rid of one, right-click it and select
Remove from Dock.
Dene Custom
Dock Stacks
Stacks are folders added to the right side
of the Dock. OS X has hidden custom
stacks for recent items. Each time you
use defaults write com.apple.dock
persistent-others -array-add {tile-
data = {list-type = 1;}; tile-type =
recents-tile;}; killall Dock, a stack is
added. Right-click to show documents,
servers or favorite volumes/items.

Restrict Your Abilities
Daily, its safer to use a Standard account, but
an admin is needed for system changes. Create a new
admin in the Users & Groups pane, log out, then into
the new account. Select your regular account and clear
Allow user to administer to reduce its rights.
Tighten Keychain Security
Your password also protects your Keychain,
giving access to its contents to Safaris AutoFill feature,
for example, just by logging in. To require separate
consent, open Keychain Access, right-click login in
the Keychain list and choose Change Password
An Unplugged Hole
Without a rmware password, Recovery Mode
gives the unfettered ability to reset any accounts
password from Terminal. The Keychain password is
unaltered by this, so an intruder wont be able to read
website logins, but they will have access to local les.
Request Password to Wake
Waking a Mac from sleep gives access to
whatever account was left signed in. Under General
in the Security & Privacy pane, turn on the option that
requires a password to wake, and set how soon its
needed. Longer than the 5 seconds option is risky.
Lock the Keychain
In the same menu, choose Change Settings
for options that lock the Keychain upon sleep or after
inactivity. In the apps preferences, you can add a menu
bar icon to show Keychain status and to lock it. When
locked, system services may prompt you for access.
Set a Firmware Password
Restart your Mac and hold Command + R at
the chime. Choose Utilities > Firmware Password Utility.
Set a password and dont forget it youll need it on
rare occasions such as restoring your Mac from Time
Machine, and to use other startup key combinations.

SHARING
SERVICES
Features in the Sharing
pane allow you to log into
a Mac remotely or simply
copy files. In particular,
review the options under
Screen Sharing and File
Sharing to ensure your
Mac and its contents
cant be accessed by just
anyone connected to the
same network.
QUICK
TIP
A strong password is one
that isnt easily guessed
by a person or worked
out by a program.
Generally speaking, a
good password includes
letters, numbers and
symbols, but beware that
symbols may be assigned
to different keys than
usual at the firmware
password screen.

The Titles Library
With your project open, click on Titles & Text at
the bottom right. As with transitions, this panel can be
resized by dragging its top edge up or down, but youll
notice that there are more choices available this time,
and you wont be able to see all of the options at once.
Browse by Category
At the top of the panel is a title, most likely set
to General. Click on it to reveal additional categories.
You can also click on the left and right arrows on either
side of the title to navigate through them all, or choose
the category Show All to display them all together.
QUICK
TIP
When working with a title,
two white rectangles are
shown over your clip.
These tell you where to
place your text so that it
wont be cropped by any
device you watch the
movie on. Text inside the
inner rectangle is within
the so-called safe zone.

Adding a Title
Drag a title onto your project. It doesnt matter
where exactly you add it since you can move it around.
Its represented by a purple rectangle, above your
existing clips. You can alter its duration to last as long
as you need it to, by dragging its left and right edges.
Adjustments
To the right of the preview area are text editing
options. You can use this panel to change the font type,
size and style. Clicking on the paint palette brings up
a Color Properties window, where you can change the
color of your text, right down to individual letters.
Changing Styles
The Adjustments panel has four tabs. The
second one, Style, allows you to apply a specic look
to any element of your title, whether thats text or
another element. To do so, ensure the object you want
to alter is selected, and then click on the style to apply.
Text Editing
Double-click on the placeholder text to initiate
the editing mode, so you can write over the generic
text. Hold down the Command key to reveal draggable
handles around the text box that you use to alter its
dimensions, along with the size of the text inside it.
Mode
The last group of options is labeled Mode. From
here you can choose to select or create a horizontal or
vertical text layer, and you can have more than one text
layer per title. The last option, the cursor icon, lets you
select parts of your title and move them around.
Get Animated
The Animation tab lets you apply motion to
your text so it appears or disappears in different ways.
You can only apply one animation per title; add another
and it overwrites the previous one. The Shapes tab can
be used to add extra decoration to your titles.
QUICK
TIP
Premiere Elements
doesnt come with titles
pre-installed. Dragging
one of the thumbnail
previews into your
project will make the
app download the file it
needs. You can right-click
on a title and choose
Download all to get
them all immediately.

Become a Pro at iOS Pages
Powerful publishing on the move is now even easier with Pages
ALL OF THE iWork apps got a
makeover with the release of iOS 7,
and when you buy a new device, all
three are provided for free.
Using Pages on an iPad is a much more
pleasant experience than on an iPhone because
of the screen size, and creating documents on
your iPad is straightforward, largely thanks to

Start by choosing one of the 63 available

Change it. Size and color? You can change
those, too. Images can be replaced with photos
from your Photos app, and there are dozens of
shapes available for you to add to documents.
We particularly like the image masking feature,
which lets you choose which parts of an image
to display or hide.
The range of style options for objects is huge,
and text formatting options are also diverse.
When youre done creating, your work can
be sent wirelessly to an AirPrint-compatible
printer, saved to iCloud, or shared using email.
Theres no doubt that Pages on iPad is much
easier and more fun to use than the small-
screen version. BY CHRISTIAN HALL
Getting a New Page
Sometimes, Pages minimalist interface
can be irritating. Heres a case in point: you could
spend a long time trying to work out how to get
the app to start a fresh new page in a multi-page
document, when the command to do this is hidden
in plain sight behind an icon. With the keyboard
showing, simply tap the + button at its top-right
corner to reveal the options you need for inserting
line breaks, column breaks and the all-important
page breaks, as well as footnotes and comments.
Adjust Page Margins
To adjust the size of your document, you can
manipulate the page margins by using the ruler. To
show the ruler, tap the wrench icon at the top of the
screen and enable Settings > Ruler. To align your
text, set the tab stops along the ruler to align text
on the left, right, center or decimal point. Tap on the
ruler to place an insertion point, or hold and drag
a tab stop icon until its in the correct position. You
can insert as many tab stops as you want. To hide
the ruler and the keyboard, tap the bottom-right key.

Anchoring Images
Images and shapes can be anchored
so they move with the text this is usually
referred to as an inline image or made
to oat above the text, with the option
of wrapping text around the graphic. Tap
the + at the top of the screen to insert an
image, and then tap the Paintbrush icon at
the top of the screen. Tap Arrange > Wrap,
and choose your anchor and wrap options.
Icons help to describe their effects.
Selecting Text
Its not obvious how to select text in
Pages. You can double-tap to select a word,
or triple-tap to select an entire paragraph
at once. To select all the text, either tap and
hold, then choose Select All from the menu
that pops up, or use Command + A on a
paired Bluetooth keyboard. To adjust the
selection, tap one of the blue handles to
grab it, and then drag your nger forwards
or backwards through the document.
Cropping Pictures
If the picture you want to use is the
wrong shape for your pages layout, you
can use the Edit Mask command under the
Image tab in the Paintbrush menu. This
lets you crop images, as well as zooming
and panning the picture inside the mask.
Its a bit like moving a huge poster around
outside a window, except you can alter
the size of the window, and the size of the
poster as well.
Using the Spellcheck
Suspected misspellings are shown
with a dotted red underline. To correct
them, double-tap on the mistake and then
tap Replace and pick the correct word
from the suggestions. If theres only one
available suggestion, youre shown this as
soon as you tap on a word, and you can tap
to accept it. This menu also tells you if the
spellchecker is totally stumped and has no
replacement word available.
Skim Long Documents
Even with ick gestures, it could
take you a long time to scroll through a big
document. Thankfully, Apple has thought
about this: tap and hold for a split second
at the right of the screen, and up pops
the navigator. Slide your nger slowly up
and down the screen, and you will see
thumbnails of your documents pages to
the left of your ngertip. Lift your nger to
jump to the displayed page.
Undoing Text Errors
Sometimes you move an image
accidentally or make a mistake while youre
typing. This is easily xed in the iPhone
version of Pages by simply shaking your
phone and then selecting either Undo or
Redo, as appropriate. If this doesnt work,
make sure youve tapped Done or nished
your current task and then try shaking your
phone again. On the iPad, tap the bottom-
left key to reveal an Undo key.

Undo/Redo
If you delete something by mistake,
or if youve mistyped something, youll
want to be able to roll back your changes.
Theres an Undo button at the top-left
corner. Tap and hold it to reveal the Redo
option. On an iPhone, you can simply shake
the device to bring up the Undo option.
Create Tab Stops
Bring up the ruler by tapping on
some text. Select the text you want to
adjust, and then tap on the ruler to insert
tab stops. Double-tap a tab stop to change
its type: a diamond indicates center-
aligned, a triangle pointing left is right-
aligned, while a circle is decimal-aligned.
Tidy Up
Tap Documents at the top left to
see your les. Tap Edit and then tap all but
one of the documents you want to put in
a folder. Tap and drag one of the selection
and the other items will follow it. Drop the
selection onto the remaining, unselected
document to put them all in a new folder.
Adjust Margins
Tap the wrench icon and choose
Document Setup. The view changes to a
vertical page preview that shows the
pages margins. Adjust these by tapping
and dragging the arrows. Alter the paper
size by tapping Change Paper Size at the
bottom of the screen.
Headers and Footers
With your document open, tap the
wrench icon and then choose Document
Setup. At the top and bottom of the
page you can type a header and a footer in
the boxes. The text you type is added to the
Section Master, so the header and footer
appears on every page.
Find Text
While viewing a document, tap the
wrench and choose Find to reveal a search
bar. In it, enter the text you want to nd.
Instances of that text are highlighted, and
the arrows at the right step through them.
Tap the cog on the left to nd and replace
text, and for stricter matching options.
Image Watermarks
To turn an image into a watermark,
add the image, then resize it to t where
you want the watermark to appear. Tap the
Paintbrush icon, choose the Style tab, and
then choose Style Options > Effects. Drag
the opacity slider to the left. Options to add
a shadow or reection are also found here.
Page Numbers
To add page numbers, follow the
same route as for headers and footers,
but when you tap on either the header or
footer box, select Page Numbers from the
pop-up menu that appears until you start
typing. Select a presentation style from the
menu, and then tap Done at the top left.
IMPORT
ATTACHMENTS
You dont have to use iTunes on your Mac
to get existing documents into Pages on
your iPad. You can send Pages or Word
documents as an attachment to an email.
On receipt, tap and hold the attachments
icon in the email and select Open in
Pages from the options that appear.

WWDC 2014
By the time you read this, the 2014 Apple
Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC)
will have come and gone, its focus squarely
on iOS 8 and OS X 10.10. While iOS 7
introduced the new love-it-or-hate-it at
UI, its still far from being a fully polished
product. Improvements to Siri, Maps, and
Calendar, plus the arrival of the rumored
new tness apps are long overdue.
On the Mac, meanwhile, Mavericks 10.9.3
wasnt a major overhaul and a future OS
X 10.10 (with a Californian codename to
match) will potentially do more to bring
the desktop software in line with changes
to iOS. Well have a full report on WWDC
2014 in our next issue, digging behind the
headlines to look closely at what Apples
latest announcements and plans for the
future really mean to you.
BATTERY BREAKTHROUGH
For the past several years, the secret
to better battery life hasnt been about
developing better, more efcient batteries.
Instead, it has been about saving power.
While current Lithium-Ion battery
technology cant be pushed any further,
hope might lie in a battery breakthrough by
Power Japan Plus (powerjapanplus.com).
The company claims to have invented a
revolutionary Dual Carbon battery, which
could last longer, charge faster, operate
cooler (so no more exploding laptops), and
doesnt use any toxic or rare materials.
Dont get too excited. This new carbon
technology is aimed at replacing li-Ion
cells in future electric vehicles. But it could
also nd its way into our future MacBooks,
iPads, iPhones, and perhaps even our
tness-orientated Apple wearables.
RETURN OF THE
USB DRIVE
Think that iCloud killed off the ash drive?
Not so fast. Hyper/Sanho Corporation
recently launched a Kickstarter campaign
to build the iStick, the worlds rst USB
ash drive with an integrated Apple
Lightning Connector. The prospects of
this gadget becoming a reality are rock-
solid. At the time of writing, the $100,000
campaign had received over $580,000 in
funding. Find out more at kickstarter.com.
