27 FEBRUARY 2014 | CAVENDISH CONFERENCE CENTRE, LONDON, UK
WELCOME
Dear delegate,
Welcome to the 2014 Smart Lighting Controls Europe Conference.
Why do we see luminaires in car parks, railway stations and offces illuminated when theres blazing
sunshine? And why are toilets, corridors and meeting rooms brightly lit when no-one is in them? Why
are we paying for this needless energy?
Good lighting is about putting the right light in the right place at the right time. And controls obviously
play a huge part in helping us do this.
But its not so simple to achieve in practice. A baffing array of technologies, protocols and topologies are
available so its little wonder that the installation of controls is often deferred, and sadly the benefts are
not realised.
Today is about taking the frst step to wrestling control of your lighting and its energy.
Because theres a revolution underway in lighting: its going digital. Smart lighting controls are being
developed in parallel with the introduction of LEDs and are allowing unprecedented control, monitoring
and energy reduction.
Todays conference will give you the understanding and confdence to move forward with your controls
strategy. We hope you will be inspired, enlightened and engaged with the presentations, projects and
debate.
Please share your thoughts with us following the conference sessions, and more importantly network
with your peers and speakers during the breakout sessions and drinks reception.
Also in the exhibition zone, check out the state-of-the-art controls kit that the lighting industry can offer.
We welcome you to this conference.
Yours sincerely,
Ray Molony
Programme Director

8.55am
Introduction
Welcome from Steve Davies, CEO of the Lighting Industry
Association.
9:00am
KEYNOTE: 7 things Id wish Id known about
controls
What can a controls installation achieve? What are
the main pitfalls? What questions do you need to ask
before starting a project? What are the main protocols and
standards? What is the right technology for your application? These are
some of the issues that Stewart Langdown of Mackwell will demystify in
this introductory session.
9.35am
The opportunities to retrot with wireless
technology
The arrival of wireless technology promises to create
lots more opportunities to retrot controls. How does a
wireless system compare to a traditional hard-wired system in
terms of installation and performance? Andy Davies of Harvard
Engineering explains all.
10.05am
The Top 10 quick wins
What are the easy ways to fast paybacks in buildings? What should you
be doing in areas such as circulation zones, washrooms, plant rooms and
car parks to make immediate and substantial savings? In this session, well
outline the fastest route to big cuts in energy.
10.35am Q&A
10.50am Cofee and networking
11.20am
Education Exemplar Project: Bath
University
Richard Hughes of the University of Bath
and Jeremy Turner of Lux magazine and Fab
Controls discuss the challenges and how they were overcome to create a
comprehensive multi-building control and monitoring system. Video report
followed by panel discussion.
11:50am
Transport Exemplar Project:
Manchester Airport
Manchester Airport is the busiest outside London and an
early adopter of innovative lighting technology. The facility has
recently linked its lighting controller with its ight monitoring
system to create a dynamic installation which responds
to passengers movements automatically and delivers
spectacular energy savings of 85-90%. A video report will
be followed by an interview with Manchester Airport services
facilities manager Andy Sheridan and technical engineer Jon
Beswick by Lux publisher Ray Molony.

Ofce Exemplar Project: Western Transit Shed
conversion, Kings Cross, London
This Lux Award-winning ofce conversion boasts an average
power consumption of just 7.5W/square metre including
feature lighting. It has won Breeam Excellent and Gold Ska ratings.
Here Dominic Meyrick of Hoare Lea explains how a combination of daylight
linking, sophisticated control and design has created an ultra-low energy
ofce for the engineering consultancy

Session 4: Standards and Protocols
2:15pm
Panel discussion: Do controls deliver on their
promise?
Sometimes control installations dont deliver on their
promised savings. What are the reasons for this and how
can we maximise the savings and benets? What are the
barriers to controls in applications such as retail? And what
role does behaviorial change play? Our panellists who
include Chris Barnes of ExCeL London, David Lippold of
LiteIP and Paul Jones of BEG will discuss these questions
and more.

3:30pm
Dali dilemmas
The biggest mistakes and assumptions
speciers, installers and end users make
with Dali installations. Presentation by
Peter van der Kolk, chairman of Dali, and
Kevin McCann, co-chair of the Dali communications working group.
4:00pm
Lighting and behavioural change
A ground-breaking energy-saving project being trialled at Barts Health
hospitals is set to save the NHS 1/5m this year. The TLC (Turn Of Lights
Out Close Doors) pilot scheme at The Royal London and Barts involves
persuading staf to switch of lights and close doors using the nudge
philosophy. Here Chris Large of Global Action Plan, the provider of the
programme, explains how it works.
4.30pm Q&A
4:40pm
Panel discussion: Just how secure are controls
systems?
Both wired and wireless systems can be prone to interference,
compatibility conicts and security risks, say critics. How
vulnerable are they? And how can we protect installations
and ensure reliable operation? Panellists include Geof
Archenhold of Integrated Systems Technologies, John
McDonnell of Harvard Engineering and Wayne Howell of
Artistic Licence.

John McDonnell
Johns degree in electrical and electronic engineering, student sponsorship from
Thorn Lighting in 1985 and his fnal year thesis An electronic ballast for a compact
fuorescent lamp laid the foundation for a career in lighting. After graduating in 1987
he started a full time job in sales at Thorn. Following that, experience in wholesaling
and then electronics manufacturing at Arlen and Advanced Lighting gave him the
tools to start his own business. Harvard Engineering, founded in 1993 had been a
long term ambition for John. Building on his experience and spotting a gap in the
market for compact electronics for 2D lamps, John started production of a design
based on his university project in his kitchen. Soon after, a factory was established in
Leeds, paving the way for the Harvard Engineering of today.

technology solutions. Kevin is also chair of the Dali Marketing and Communications
Working Group based in Frankfurt. His knowledge and experience of the lighting
industry and Dali control systems has helped to promote Mackwells brand, as well as
develop industry recognition of new products and requirements within emergency
lighting control. As chair of the Dali marketing working group, he has helped to
promote the benefts of the Dali protocol and the rewards that investing in quality
lighting control system offers.
Stewart Langdown
Stewart has over 20 years experience in the lighting industry; prior to joining
Mackwell in January 2014 he worked for a large electronic component manufacturer
and lighting companies. Stewart will drive new product developments and introduce
Mackwell to new markets within the industry. Stewart also sits on various Society of
Light and Lighting (SLL) committees and is a regular contributor at industry events
