Council
discusses
demolishing
old library
By KYLE CARNEY
The Sun
The new library opened its
doors to the public for the first
time on Tuesday, July 8.
At the township council meet-
ing on July 7, the discussion cen-
tered on what to do with the old li-
brary.
Rick Ragan, the townships
consulting architect, presented
his findings to the board, outlin-
ing the different options avail-
able.
There are many different
things the old library could be
used for, Ragan said. Some
ideas I have heard are a police sta-
tion and courtroom, retail and of-
fice space and a performing arts
center.
But, before discussing these
possibilities, Ragan described the
state of the building and what it
would take to bring it up to code.
In his estimation, it would cost

Celebrating its 50th year as one
of the worlds best-loved musi-
cals, Fiddler on the Roof is
based on the tales by Shalom Ale-
ichem and set in Tzarist Russia in
1905. This touching musical tells
the story of Tevye, a poor milk-
man, who must weigh his family's
happiness against the traditions
that have preserved a way of life
in his village for centuries. His
eldest daughters want to marry
for love rather than an auspicious
match, and outside political
forces threaten everything he
holds dear. The musical produced
well-known songs such as Sun-
rise, Sunset, If I Were a Rich
Man and Matchmaker.
Fiddler on the Roof was one
of the first Broadway musicals to
deal with serious issues such as
persecution, poverty and holding
on to ones beliefs. It debuted at
the Imperial Theatre on Broad-
way September 22, 1964, and ran
for 3,242 shows, becoming the
longest-running musical in 1972.
It won nine Tony Awards, includ-
ing Best Musical, Best Actor
(Zero Mostel), Best Supporting
Actress (Maria Karnilova) and
Best Director (Jerome Robbins)
as well as awards for author, pro-
ducer, choreographer, costume

I
ts hard to believe, but just last
week, we saw the first back-to-
school advertisement on TV. It took
us by surprise. Oh, no, we thought,
did we sleep through all of July?
Of course we didnt; its just stores
trying to get ahead of the game and
boosting sales in a traditionally down
month.
It got us thinking, though: We have
been presenting back-to-school cover-
age in The Sun for quite awhile now, in
many different towns, but how can we
make this coverage better?
Our quick answer by being better
prepared.
So, even though the beginning of the
next school year is the last thing on
your mind here in mid-July, were ask-
ing that you put it at the forefront of
your brain or at least in part of your
brain for a few moments.
What will be different about this
school year?
Were going to find out. Right now,
our reporters are compiling lists of
questions for school leaders about the
new school year.
Are there new classes students and
parents need to know about?
How about scheduling changes?
Was any work done at the schools
over the summer?
Generally, well be asking school
leaders to tell us about things that
you parents, taxpayers and students
need to know before the 2014-15 school
year begins.
Then, we will pass that information
along to you.
Do you have any questions youd like
our reporters to ask? If so, the time to
act is now. The more questions we get
from you, the better prepared we can
be, and the better information we can
pass along to you.
Maybe you are concerned about the
budget (who isnt?). Or maybe youve
heard about a new program that you
think might be ideal for your child. Or
perhaps you are wondering about re-
pairs that were scheduled for your
childs school.
Wed love to get those questions from
you. Just send an email to us so that we
can include them on our lists.
Most school districts have done a lot
in recent years to be more responsive
to questions submitted by the public. It
makes sense. Everyone wants to have
great schools. Everyone wants to keep
taxes as low as possible, while still pro-
viding great service. One of the best
ways to achieve these goals is to build a
true public-private partnership be-
tween schools and the communities
they serve. And building that relation-
ship starts with effective communica-
tion.
So send us your questions. Well do
our best to get answers.
Ready for school?
Of course youre not, but theres no better time to prepare than now
Any questions?
We are tracking down school leaders to
ask them questions about the upcoming
school year. So whats on your mind?
Send us your questions, and well do our
best to get answers.

The Community House has
been around for 88 years, and for
the first time, fundraising is need-
ed to fund the building many feel
is the emblem of town.
As a result of the downturn in
the economy a few years ago, The
Community House lost some of
its main revenue streams, includ-
ing rental income and donations.
With this loss of income, certain
measures were taken to ensure
the bills could be paid.
We renovated the ballroom to
generate enough income to cover
operating expenses and it
worked, Board President George
Schulmann said. Our perma-
nent maintenance fund, however,
has dropped dramatically, and
since we dont receive any fund-
ing from local, state or federal
government, we are now asking
for the communitys support.
The goal of Our Unity Capital
Campaign is to raise $2 million.
Capital Campaign Committee Co-
Chairs Kevin Kutcher and Will
Merriken are leading the
fundraising efforts.
The goal was set based on
identified needs, Merriken said.
The objectives of the campaign
are to complete critical capital
improvements, pay down the
mortgage and replenish the per-
manent maintenance fund so we
can continue creating memories
and supporting the organizations
who focus on giving back.
Some of the capital improve-
ments identified by Schulmann
are a new roof, bricks and mortar,
air conditioning and updates to
the parking lot, to name a few.
It is our responsibility to keep
The Community House intact for
future generations to appreciate
and enjoy, Schulmann said.
Great things happen here, and
our mission is to make sure that
continues.
The Community House serves
more than 70 non-profit and serv-
ice organizations. Its mission is to
house organizations whose oper-
ations do not benefit any private
stakeholder or individual.
This place is a home away
from home for most people in the
community, Schulmann said.
Ninety percent of the things that
happen at The Community House
are by non-profits. Its a place for
everyone from the community to
come and enjoy themselves, and
we have to preserve that because
its something that not many
towns or communities can say
they have.
To date, Our Unity Capital
Campaign has raised nearly
$600,000. The campaign will con-
tinue through Dec. 31.
We are encouraged by the sup-
port we have received so far and
hope that this campaign educates
everyone about how much good
happens here so we can reach our
goal and assure the future,
Kutcher said.

paign, visit www.ourcommuni-

Just minutes from Mt. Laurel
nearly $3.5 million for the build-
ing to meet construction codes,
not including any modifications
for repurposing the building.
The cost to fit out the new li-
brary was $180 per foot, which is
what it would cost to fit out the
old library building, Ragan said.
The total cost of redesigning the
old library could climb to more
than $6 million in my estima-
tion.
Another issue with renovating
the old library for a new purpose
is parking. The parking lot that
was developed for the new Town
Hall and library does not provide
enough spaces for retail shop-
ping, office spaces or a police sta-
tion and courtroom, according to
Ragan.
Due to the price and lack of
parking, Ragan recommended the
library be demolished.
I feel that demolishing the old
library is the best scenario, he
said.
Once the building is removed,
the site would be graded at a slope
toward the new library and Town
Hall and could be used as an am-
phitheater.
Members of council agreed
with Ragans assessment, but did
not take any action. There was
also no objection from the public.
This puts to rest a lot of the
questions I have been asked about
what is going to happen to the old
library, Deputy Mayor Stacey
Jordan said.
In other news:
Kathy Ward, chairperson of
Sustainable Moorestown, pre-
sented findings on the use of
solar energy in town.
The focus of the study was
ways to cut down on the cost and
use of energy.
The study looked at all munici-
pally-owned buildings that could
use solar panels. The result of the
study showed all buildings could
use solar panels and would gener-
ate 60-100 percent of their elec-
tricity.
The board discussed bringing
in a professional solar energy
consultant to look at the possibili-
ty of installing solar panels on
the roofs of township buildings,
as well as the possibility of using
brown fields to construct a solar
field.
There is absolutely no reason
why Moorestown cant benefit
from solar projects, Ward said.
Ragan: Once old library building
is removed, site will be graded

July 2014
Dear Moorestown Resident:
Below you will see what is happening in Moorestown real estate market Ior the Iirst six months (January-June) over the past couple
oI years;*
Days on the Market Number of Single Family Average Sold Price
Homes Sold
2014 111 days 115 homes $577,926
2013 119 days 145 homes $517,419
2012 141 days 114 homes $453,387
As you can see, the real estate market in Moorestown is strengthening. I believe the decrease in homes sold this year versus last year
is a reIlection oI the harsh winter. II you`ve ever considered buying a home or investing in real estate, this is a great time. Interest
rates are low and there are many wonderIul homes available.
'Like Edgar Real Estate on Facebook Ior weekly market updates.
Feel Iree to call our oIIice iI you have any questions or would like more inIormation.
Sincerely,
David Lewis,
Broker/Owner
