Kaslo Community Garden
Spring Activities
Kaslo Community Garden has been busy ever since the
snow departed at the end of March. Ten blueberry plants
have been planted in the garden, new raised beds have
been created, and sev-
eral orchard trees have
been replaced. King
Stropharia mushroom
mycelium has been
inoculated under the
fruit trees to add nu-
trition to the trees and
provide some tasty
treats. Te spaces in
the garden are used by
both members and the
community. We are
growing food for the
local Food Cupboard
that includes crops of
squash, beets, garlic,
and potatoes. Te re-
maining garden spaces
are designated to in-
dividual member gar-
deners. You will enjoy
seeing diferent organic gardening strategies and compost
techniques when you visit.
Te grade 2 and 3 class actively participated in the gar-
den this spring and spent an hour at KCGC every Turs-
day. Older students also came to work at various projects
and we were very pleased with their participation and re-
sults. We have also enjoyed regular visits from residents
of the Victorian Community Health Centre of Kaslo, who
come to enjoy the garden. We have created a sensory gar-
den in one of the raised beds and expect that all visitors
will enjoy many tastes
and smells over the
growing season in this
help yourself garden.
A major project for
this season is to create
a wash station in the
garden. Plans are in
place for the project,
but a specifc time to
complete the work has
not been arranged.
We also plan to build
a support frame for
the raspberry plants.
More signage about
our mission and
our garden space is
planned for the cur-
rent year. You can fnd
the Kaslo Community
Garden at the inter-
section of the New Denver highway and the main road
into and out of Kaslo. Please feel free to visit our lovely
space!

George Binns Art Show
Tis summer, the otherworldly paintings of George
(Giorgio) Michael Binns transport viewers in a two-
month exhibition at the Nelson Public Library.
Playing with fat planes of colour, Binns explores themes
of human presence in stark landscapes through fgures
and buildings that lend perspective and contrast, in par-
ticular in works such as Te Journey and Te Princess
and the Pauper. Looming mountains over silent buildings
create a diferent kind of contrast in Mountain Retreat.
With this exhibition coming just as this new artistic segue
developed, Binns plans to introduce new paintings at the end
of July which will hang for the remainder of the show, and he
encourages art-lovers to visit twice to see the progression of
work. Te exhibition runs until the end of August.

Watershed Stewardship Workshop
In Nelson
Look at a watershed map of Canada and you will see
how deeply connected we are by the ponds, lakes, streams,
and rivers that fow out into our fve major watersheds
the Atlantic Ocean, Hudson Bay, Arctic Ocean, Pacifc
Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.
Our watersheds connect us here, in Canada and around
the world. How we relate to them is a measure of how
we respect each other, locally and globally. Forest ecol-
ogist Herb Hammond of Winlaw has worked for many
years with First Nations and other rural communities to
develop ecosystem-based conservation plans. He will be
one of several noted speakers at a Watershed Stewardship
Workshop in Nelson on Saturday, August 9, 10 am to
3 pm in St. Saviours Anglican Church, 701 Ward Street.
Water is life, notes Hammond, yet in legislation and
in human developments, we treat it like an engineering
commodity. Every crease, no matter how small, on earth
is a watershed for some beings and the whole earth is the
watershed for all of us. Intact ecosystems are the best pro-
viders of high quality water. However, we ignore science
and common sense when we suggest that modifed eco-
systems have little impact on the functioning of water-
sheds to provide pure water.
We dont own the earth, says Nadine Podmorof of
the community-based Duhamel Watershed Society. We
have to behave responsibly. At the workshop, Podmorof
will trace the history of economic activities in local water-
sheds, and speak of the impact of logging in our area.
Sara Stratton, national program coordinator for
KAIROS, and Vicki Obedkof of Trinity-St. Pauls United
Church in Toronto will lead the workshop, along with
Barb Pistak of Rossland, an elder of the Okanagan Na-
tion. She will discuss the traditional importance of water
to Indigenous peoples.
Te workshop is presented by KAIROS, an ecumen-
ical organization working for, social and environmental
justice in Canada and throughout the world. Cost is $20,
including lunch, and preregistration is requested. For fur-
ther information, please call 250-352-9871.

New Two Act Play Comes To Kaslo!
Imagine a writing retreat that allows you to complete that
written piece of work youve been wanting to fnish. Enter
Writing Retreats Kaslo (www.holleyrubinsky.com/events.
htm). Tis is where Denine Milner wrote her new play
Front-Door Women, and is where I frst read the character
of Meg aloud.
Emerging from a year of unexpected divorce, confict with
her daughter and a cancer diagnosis, Meg tries to step back
into her life as her old self and reclaim her reputation as an
infuential restaurant critic. Afer a laudable meal at the citys
newest restaurant and notes for a stellar review in hand, Meg
and her best sidekick, Sandra, freshen up in the womens
washroom before meeting Megs estranged teen-age daughter
at the airport for a tropical escape to repair their fractured
relationship. Megs future looks bright, until she and Candice,
the hormonal, pregnant owner of the restaurant, become
trapped in the washroom by their own fears and rage toward
two patrons from their respective pasts, who are seated out
front. A two-act play of hidden identities, high stakes and
game-changing allies, Front-Door Women is a funny, fast-
paced story of vulnerability, hard-truths and courage.
Afer reading the play, I knew it was a real gem of a script
for women actors to sink their teeth into, and a good physic-
al ft for Te Langham theatre in Kaslo. We secured fund-
ing from the Columbia Basin Trust and the RDCK to host
a script development workshop in early June with the play-
wright, three local actors (Darcie Matthews, Colette Enns,
and Lynn van Deursen) and invited director Barbara Pollard
from Vancouver (of Moms the Word fame) to join us. Af-
ter the staged reading and invaluable feedback from the live
audience, Denine returned to Cranbrook to create a fnal
production draf destined for the stage this July.
And with funding from the CKCA and permission from
Canadian Actors Equity we were able to secure Barbara as
our director for the upcoming full production of this fast
paced, edgy and poignant two act play. A story of discovery,
personal growth and allies in unlikely places.
Te Langham Cultural Centre (www.thelangham.ca) is
pleased to host Denine as their frst artist in residence as
part of their 40th anniversary celebrations, and is excited
to be participating in the launch of her newest play. Please
join us July 24 to 26 at 7:30 pm, or 4 pm on the 27 for the
premiere production of Front Door Women. Tickets are $15
each and available at Sunnyside Naturals (250-353-9667)
and Willow Home Boutique (250-353-2257) in Kaslo.

Moonglow Performs Torchlit
Moonglow, a date night duo from Kaslo BC, performs
TORCHLIT throughout the Kootenays this summer.
Moonglow has been performing together for fve years,
with Shauna Clapp on vocals and Eric Moon on guitar.
Te duo performs classic and original arrangements of
torch and jazz standards and some more recent heart-
breaks with tingling soul. Shauna channels the torch
singers from the seedy speakeasies of New York and Chi-
cago, where the path of love never did run true. Erics gui-
tar gives voice to the heights of love and the depths of loss.
Moonglow will be ap-
pearing in Rossland July
17 at the Garage, in Trail
on July 18 at the Bears
Den, and a ticketed show
at Chances in Castlegar
on July 19. In August,
Moonglow will appear
at Boccalino in Koote-
nay Bay on the 8th, the
Snoring Sasquatch in
Creston on the 9th, and
as the last show of the
Kimberley Kaleidoscope
Arts Festival on the 10th
at Centre 64.

Christopher and Mandy would like to thank everyone who
assisted us in countless ways after the Johnsons Landing
landslides two years ago. You opened your hearts and
embraced us with support and help of many kinds, both seen
and unseen. You are numerous, encompassing the communities
of Kaslo and north Kootenay Lake, Nelson and beyond,
including cousins and aunties, friends and family overseas.
Instead of trying to name you all, wed like to acknowledge the
imaginative diversity of gifts that ranged across the spectrum of
human needs:
Immediate necessities of life, clothes, food, and footwear.
Home-grown produce, pesto, cookies, jams. Pizza and picnics.
Lettuce and eyeglasses; manure and fne wine; books and a
bicycle. Sun hats and a telephone. Strawberries and knitting
yarns. Computers and Reiki. A car and counseling. Vehicle
servicing and body massage.Donations of money and gift
certifcates. The fraternity who stood shoulder to shoulder
in the mud, willing to be one with Christophers vision of
excavation and salvage.
Wed like to acknowledge BCs Emergency Social Services, the
provincial disaster assistance and Red Cross support. And the
RDCKs Recovery Manager for the Johnsons Landing disaster,
Deb Borsos, who showed those rare qualities of a caring heart
and supreme professionalism in support of everyone who was
afected.
We feel blessed to have this special community sustaining us. It
has made all the diference. Thank you all.

REACHING OUT: Identifying
Isolated Rural Seniors
With funding from Columbia Basin Rural Development
Institute, Nelson CARES Society and the Age Friendly Com-
munity Initiative have hired a student intern from Selkirk
College for Reaching Out, a research and outreach project.
Te project aims to locate and interview isolated rural sen-
iors for the purpose of identifying their service and resource
needs, and connecting these seniors to organizations that
can help them meet their needs.
Te Reaching Out Project will beneft both seniors and
the organizations that provide services to them. Working in
collaboration with Nelson & District Seniors Coordinating
Society and North Kootenay Lake Community Services, the
project will reach out to seniors in rural communities sur-
rounding Nelson and Kaslo.
Are you an isolated rural senior? Do you know a senior ex-
periencing isolation as a result of living in a rural area in the
Kootenays? Te Reaching Out Project is seeking rural seniors
interested in talking about their experiences and concerns.

Their wonderful mom is a tuxedo cat, but these
two boys are obviously Siamese crosses. They are
12 weeks old, and are in their prime of funny, fast
and furious kitten antics. Frosty is more outgoing
than Flash, but Flash is a snuggler once he knows
you. They can be adopted separately or together
(KAAP offers a fee discount for double adoptions).
They have been fully vet checked and vaccinated,
and will be neutered soon; this is all paid for by
KAAP.
If you would like to visit them, please contact

Kaslo Guitar Festival 2014
Te second annual Kaslo Guitar Festival takes place
August 11 to 16. Te Festival attracts classical guitarists
for a week of master classes, private instruction, ensemble
playing and workshops, culminating in a Saturday afer-
noon performance showcasing what has been accom-
plished during the week.
Canadas leading classical guitarist, Daniel Bolshoy, re-
turns in 2014, and we are pleased that San Francisco Con-
servatorys Marc Teicholz will also join our faculty. Bol-
shoy has been to Kaslo several times in the last six years
as a guest of the Kaslo Concert Society and is charmed
by our village as a location for an annual guitar festival.
Teicholz has been teaching at Mt Royal Universitys
GuitarFest West for the past several years, and the tim-
ing of the Kaslo event makes it possible for us to engage
him as well. Other faculty include well-known Kootenay
guitar teachers Rita Deane and David Stewart, as well as
Stephanie Judy, author of Making Music for the Joy of It.
It was a super-inspiring classical gas fve full days of
tempo and technique workshops, ensemble and orchestra
practice, private lessons and master classes, followed by a
fnal day of group and solo performances by the students.
All of this in a milieu of eager students of varied age and
skill levels, coached and inspired by the infectious en-
thusiasm of an astoundingly competent and encouraging
faculty! He has already signed up for 2014!
Classes and workshops run from 9 am until 4:30 pm
each day and there will be public concerts throughout the
week featuring faculty members. To register or for more

On a scale of 1-5 we would rate our
experience with Property Guys as 5-Excellent.
From the beginning Simon was very concise,
knowledgeable, and patient explaining the how-tos of listing, showing &
selling our house. He helped us to stage the house for pictures & YouTube
video which proved invaluable in exposing our listing to hundreds. Showing
our home was a wonderful experience in that we could share with the
viewer more information than anyone else and answer all of their questions
satisfactorily and quickly. Every one of the viewers commented as to how
valuable this information was to them as well. We were able to see on the
website how many people were interested as well as being able to answer
questions, schedule showings, have our questions answered and ultimately
found our new home on the site as well. We found this a positive, personalized
and painless experience. Simon and his staf have been available, expedient in
helping us to process our sale and expertly advising us regarding legal advice.
It only took 8 days to sell our house ourselves, for more than our asking price
and 10 days to fnd our new home through Property Guys. And, the best we
saved for lastwe saved a whole lot of money! Thanks Simon, & Kimberly of
PropertyGuys.com!
Sincerely,
Al & Brenda

Te Whole School Philosophy
In April 2014 Anniah Lang, Principal of Te Whole
School, attended the Circle of Courage spring seminar in
Victoria, BC. At this seminar she attended a number of
workshops including Deep Brain Learning and Response
Abilities Pathways (RAP) training as part of the Whole
Schools ongoing development of the Circle of Courage as
a framework for learning.
Te Circle of Courage is a positive youth development
model, based on the universal principle that to be emo-
tionally healthy all youth need a sense of generosity, in-
dependence, belonging and mastery. Tis unique model
integrates the cultural wisdom of tribal peoples, the prac-
tice wisdom of professional pioneers with troubled youth,
and fndings of modern youth development research
(from the Reclaiming Youth website www.reclaiming.
com). At the Whole School, the Circle of Courage is used
to foster whole child development: academic, social, emo-
tional and physical. Te Circle of Courage and RAP are
strength-based approaches, which mean that individual
student strengths are the starting point for learning and
problem solving. Te multi-age classroom allows for each
student to excel at his/her own pace. Te school creates
a safe and caring atmosphere where students and their
families are active participants in the learning commun-
ity. Schools and youth groups all over the world have em-
braced the Circle of Courage model, including the Cal-
gary Board of Education. Te Whole School has a vision
of sharing the Circle of Courage philosophy with other
related child and youth groups in our community.
Te Circle of Courage philosophy, combined with the
integral use of attachment theory, small class sizes and a
multi-age classroom, creates a powerful, positive learning
environment. Te school community strives to create a
nurturing and safe environment to enable learning and
has chosen to ban all WiFi and cordless phone signals
at the school. Te Whole School is now accepting Kin-
dergarten and elementary registrations for the 2014/15
school year; no family is turned away for fnancial rea-
sons. For more information contact the school at whole-
school@gmail.com or call 250-226-7737.

Building Forestry Skills In Te
West Kootenays
As forestry seems to be making a comeback, employ-
ment opportunities are on the rise for trained and skilled
forestry workers. However, since the downturn in forestry
in the Kootenays, many young potential up-comers have
moved on to jobs in the oil and gas or mining industries.
Tis has created a labour gap, whereby employers are now
faced with hiring challenges due to a lack of interested,
trained, and experienced forestry workers looking to re-
join the industry. Historically, forestry was a successive,
family-based business where owner/operators would train
their children who would then eventually take over the
business. Now, employers have to recruit externally, which
has resulted in training needs that are both very extensive
and expensive.
To help address some of these training needs, the
Ktunaxa Nation Council has extended their employment
and training services to the north end of Kootenay Lake by
ofering a Forestry Fundamentals BladeRunners program
in Kaslo. Te 12-day intensive program began June 23 and
wrapped up on Friday July 4. Ten local youth hailing from
all over the region (Crawford Bay, Nelson, Meadow Creek,
Kaslo) have successfully completed the forestry training.
Working with the Kaslo Community Forest Associ-
ation and local industry leaders, we designed a program
aimed at providing youth with the basic safety, technic-
al and employability skills needed to be successful in an
entry-level forestry position, says Training Coordinator
Skye MacKenzie.
Forestry Fundamentals included the following indus-
try certifcations- Chainsaw Operator, S-100, S-185, ATV
Operator, Radio Communication, as well as safety cours-
es such as Occupational First Aid Level 1, Transportation
Endorsement, WHMIS, and Construction Safety Training
Systems. To ensure youth were generally prepared for em-
ployment in forestry, job-readiness skills such as resume
and cover letter writing, interview skills, job retention
skills and labour market research were important com-
ponents to the program.
Not only have these young people come out with the
certifcations that employers are looking for, but they are
also armed with the skills and confdence needed to main-
tain their job once they attain it, adds Ms. MacKenzie.
Many participants already have jobs lined up. Tree have
been hired for the youth summer positions ofered by the
Kaslo Community Forest. Another has begun tree plant-
ing and will also be frefghting throughout the season. Te
Meadow Creek Mill has just recently reopened, providing
potential opportunities for several of our candidates. It is
expected that all ten participants will be employed in the
forestry industry this season.

Te Cody Caves Experience
Afer ascending into the Selkirk Mountain range and
embarking on a
short but breath-
taking hike, you
are greeted by
the Cody Caves
entrance. Like
an old growth
forest, the fra-
gile underworld
of Cody Caves
holds its own
stories in its an-
cient rock formations. Glacier waters have helped to create
the passageways that exist today while the limestone cave
continues to evolve and change. Te impressive display of
ancient calcite formations found in the cave is still growing
at the slow rate of one cubic centimeter each century.
Cody Caves Provincial Park was re-established in June
of 2013. Since then Cody Cave Tours Owner/Operator
Lee Hollis and his professional guiding team have been
escorting hundreds of individuals and families through a
fascinating journey of these ancient caves.
You can experience Cody Caves for yourself by booking
a tour at www.codycavetours.com Guided tours are avail-
able year round with tours available for everyone from
children ages 5 and up to adults who enjoy a more strenu-
ous and physical adventure. Reservations are required.
