Why have a physical therapy department:
1. The amount of cerebrovascular accidents and rheumatic disease is higher than
the national average among those in the Uintah area.
2. The potential for traumatic farming injuries, industrial accidents, and overuse
problems are definitely present.
3. No physical therapy service is available to the people of the three county area.
Physical therapy department goals To enhance the overall physical health, fitness,
and !uality of life of adults by treating and educating them "ith high !uality,
comprehensive and individuali#ed physical therapy service$1. To provide !uality
physical therapy care to the patients in an efficient manner to those people in the region.

Target population and therapy delivered
The people that "ill mainly be served are middle aged men and "omen that are
"or+ing mostly in farming, mining and cattle jobs because of the ris+ for farming
accidents and cerebrovascular accidents is higher in this area. *ince the Uintah
,ommunity &ospital is an acute hospital "e "ill mostly administer acute care to our
patients. -e "ill "or+ "ith both in.patient and out.patient care. /n.patient care is for
those that are hospitali#ed usually due to severe injury or illness. 0ut.patient care is for
those that are able to be home that can travel to the physical therapy office for treatment.
-hen dealing "ith mostly acute care "e "ill focus mainly on the patients1 activities of
daily living, fle2ibility, range of motion, and ambulation. The main goal of therapy is to
return the patients bac+ to their previous independence.

/n order to achieve our goals in the %hysical Therapy department "e "ill hire
highly !ualified employees that are professional and "ell educated in their field. These
employees "ill have e2perience in both in.patient and out.patient care and give our
patients the best !uality care available.

-ith this being a small department / plan on getting a loan from a trusted ban+.
The loan "ill be used for the facility, e!uipment, materials and employees to start. 0nce
the physical therapy department is up and running / "ill start to pay off the loan "ith
profits from the department and +eep up "ith salaries and maintenance costs "hile
managing a budget.
+cheduling
-hen doing a schedule / "ill +eep in mind that in.patient patients are usually
busy "ith other cares early in the morning, so / "ould schedule them later in the morning
or afternoon. *ince / have t"o %hysical Therapists / "ill be able to stagger their shifts a
little and be able to be open for 12 hours )onday through Thursday. 4riday "ill be open

9am "ith no evaluations scheduled. *ince this is a ne" department it "ill ta+e time to
find "hat "ill really "or+ best in the scheduling process. / feel that this is a good start. /

one %T and %T' at all times, e2cluding the one hour in the morning "here there is only
one %T' and one pt aide.
+cheduling patients:
To schedule the patients / "ill follo" the employee schedule in terms of in.patient
and out.patient, then / "ill schedule a patient follo" up appointment every 3< minutes
since there "ill be both a %T and a %T' there and / "ill give an hour for an initial
evaluation. 4or scheduling in.patient appointments it "ill be more lenient considering
their ability and endurance, it "ill depend on the patient individually.
's for the actual process of scheduling patients / thin+ that a master calendar scheduling
boo+ "ill be used. -ith the small si#e of the to"n and surrounding areas it "ill "or+
great. 0nce "e are able to e2pand "e "ill transition to electronic scheduling.

The director of physical therapy must be able to improve and stay up to date by
researching and evaluating ne" trends of physical therapy.
' director of physical therapy assures physical therapy !uality services by
establishing and maintaining departmental !uality assurance program including,
documenting actions ta+en to resolve problems, and reporting to the medical care
evaluation committee. They need to maintain legal and accreditation compliance by
developing policy positions concerning federal, state, and local regulations.$1

*trategy, (ecision )a+ing, %rocess /mprovement, /nitiative, Aegal ,ompliance,

Physical Therapist jo% description
%hysical therapists provide services that help restore function, improve mobility,
relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities of patients suffering
from injuries or disease. They restore, maintain, and promote overall fitness and health.
Therapists e2amine patients1 medical histories and then test and measure the
patients1 strength, range of motion, balance and coordination, posture, muscle
performance, respiration, and motor function. %hysical therapists develop plans
describing a treatment strategy and its anticipated outcome. %hysical therapists encourage
patients to use their muscles to increase their fle2ibility and range of motion, focus on
improving strength, balance, coordination, and endurance. Therapists also teach patients
to use assistive and adaptive devices, such as crutches, prostheses, and "heelchairs. They
also may sho" patients ho" to do e2ercises at home to e2pedite their recovery. 's
treatment continues, physical therapists document the patient1s progress, conduct periodic
e2aminations, and modify treatments "hen necessary.

both in.patients and out.patients. They also treat patients in hospital rooms, homes, or
schools$.: %hysical therapists also need to have good communication, they "ill be
communicating "ith many other health care providers and co"or+ers.
%hysical Therapists are re!uired to have a )asters degree and obtain a form of
state licensing in order to practice as a physical therapist. 6raduation from an accredited
program of physical therapy is re!uired.

There is something called a !uality assurance revie", "hich is "here the
administrator or *enior %T "ill pull four to si2 charts from their files to be revie"ed. The
charts are then revie"ed. There are certain components to be loo+ed at. There is a form
that lists the "ea+nesses or Kfla"s1, and has a time frame in "hich those "ea+nesses
should be corrected.
To evaluate the services provided you can do a patient survey. ,onducting a
survey "ill be able to help the staff and physical therapy department +no" "hat the
patients li+e about the services and things that could be "or+ed on. There is a variety of
!uestions that can be as+ed to the patient such as, having them rate the !uality of services
provided, or the effectiveness of their at home programs. These surveys "ould be
completely confidential and all surveys "ould then be put into sections of "hich the
therapy department "ill need to "or+ on.
Areas o* development *or the ne-t *ive years
0f course "ith every department there is room for improvement. There "ill be
room to gro" and learn in the physical therapy department. 8eing able to e2pand "ould
be a great goal for the ne2t five years. 6ro"ing outside of the hospital and acute care and
be able to treat a "ide variety of patients. 'dding other specialty therapist to the team
"ould be a great "ay of gro"ing and developing. 'nother area for development "ould
be the scheduling process. Turning the master paper calendar into an electronic calendar
and scheduling process "ould be necessary for gro"th in the department. /n order to
serve more patients the department "ould have to purchase more e!uipment and
e!uipment upgrades to be able to stay up to date "ith technology and research.
