OTTOVILLE Sunday
will be a homecoming for
Immaculate Conception
Catholic Church, according to
Father Jerry Schetter. The par-
ish festival will bring home
those who have moved away to
rejoin their family and friends
for a day of camaraderie.
Parishioners who havent
been home for a while come
back to visit and enjoy the good
food and games and just recon-
necting, Schetter said. I enjoy
meeting everyone.
This is Schetters second
festival since being assigned
to the Ottoville and Cloverdale
parishes and he enjoys seeing
his flock come together to raise
funds for the church.
Many of the families who
volunteer their time have
been doing the same event for
years, he said. Its handed
down through the generations.
It has become a tradition. The
whole festival in general is
everyone contributing whatever
their duties are some flip
burgers, some run the baked
goods booth. It all adds up to a
successful festival.
Vacation Bible Schoolers at the Delphos Wesleyan Church attended their second fun-filled day at
the church on Thursday dancing to the motion song Give it Away. Youth Pastor Pam King said the
bible school runs three days and on Sunday, the kids give Bible school to the adults through their
perspective. She said awards will also be given out to the kids. (DHI Media/Stephanie Groves)

SPENCERVILLE Spencerville School Board
is looking to replace or repair the districts Johnson
Controls HVAC system. David Sudhoff from Smith
Boughan gave his presentation on the proposed
possibility of upgrading the entire system.
There are concerns that this system used to
be the workhouse of the industry for many years;
however, two items are working against the HVAC
system: This version is becoming increasingly
difficult to support, the original programming has
layers and layers of original programming which
has made it very difficult to service over the years.
The programming is suspected of causing higher
than necessary energy usage. If the main controller
crashes, all HVAC systems lose control, since all
information is output from this control. If another
major component fails, large portions of the build-
ing could lose control, depending on what area is
served by the failed component. Also, a lack of
backups would require extensive time to rebuild
from scratch.
If the system would fail, there would be a pos-
sibility of causing school cancellations.
Sudhoff recommended looking at upgrading the
entire system.
The board said it wanted more time to look into
the upgrade.
Spencerville Superintendent Dennis Fuge
reported the summer maintenance of the grounds
and buildings was going well. The maintenance
department is stripping and waxing the schools
floors, painting the lockers and locker rooms and
placing railings on the bleachers for the upcoming
football season.
Fuge also thanked those who donated to the
school. The following were the donations accepted:
Athletic Boosters, $264.48; Klein Trust Foundation,
$84.50; Spencerville Jennings PTO, $2,241.50;
Spencerville Alumni Assoc., $100; and the GFS
fun funds, $64.19.
The grades K-8 workbook, lab and supply fees
were approved for the 2014-15 school year. They
are as follows: Kindergarten - $41, first grade
- $31, second grade - $39, third grade - $36.75,
fourth grade - $46, fifth grade - $42.25, sixth grade
- $31.75, seventh grade - $27.75 and eighth grade
- $38.50.
Rita Leaders was introduced as a new teacher
for a one year contract, effective Aug. 21.
In other action, the board:
Employed head softball coach Jeff Johnston,
head baseball coach Troy Montenery, study hall
monitor Rob Griffin, special education van driv-
ers Karen Schwark and Sarah Prine, library media
aide/monitors Robin Lammers and Sue Moeller
and custodian Ben Shaw;
Approved a resolution adopting a calamity day
alternative make-up plan;
Approved salary schedules as presented for
certified, extra-curricular, classified and cafeteria
supervisor for a three-year period;
Approved the return of unused state interest
funds to Ohio Schools Facility Commission for
$226,546; and
Authorized the use of the football practice field
and the football stadium (weather permitting) and
the concession stand for the 2014 midget football
season. The midget league is to present evidence
of insurance coverage for players, coaches and
Spencerville board of education.
School board members and superintendent
retired to executive session for the purpose of
discussing compensation of public employees and
adjourned with no further business.

WASHINGTON (AP) American intel-
ligence authorities believe a surface-to-air
missile took down a passenger jet in eastern
Ukraine on Thursday, a U.S. official said, but
the Obama administration was still scram-
bling to confirm who launched the strike and
whether there were American citizens killed
in the crash.
Vice President Joe Biden said the inci-
dent was not an accident and described
the Malaysia Airlines plane as having been
blown out of the sky.
Among the unanswered questions was
whether the missile was launched from the
Russian or Ukrainian side of the border they
share, according to the official, who was not
authorized to discuss the matter publicly by
name and insisted on anonymity. But the offi-
cial said U.S. intelligence assessments sug-
gest it is more likely pro-Russian separatists
or the Russians rather than Ukrainian govern-
ment forces shot down the plane.
The U.S. has sophisticated technologies
that can detect missile launches, including the
identification of heat from a rocket engine.
President Barack Obama, speaking during
a trip to Delaware, made no mention of who
might be responsible for the crash of the plane
carrying 298 people, and called the incident a
terrible tragedy.
Following the crash, the Federal Aviation
Administration said U.S. airlines voluntarily
agreed not to operate near the Ukraine-Russia
border. The agency said it was monitoring the
situation to determine whether further guid-
ance was necessary.
A global air safety group said an inter-
national coalition of countries should lead
the investigation of the crash. Safety experts
say theyre concerned that because the plane
crashed in area of Ukraine that is in dispute,
political considerations could affect the inves-
tigation.
Kenneth Quinn of the Flight Safety
Foundation said only an independent, mul-
tinational investigation can truly get to the
bottom of it without political interference.
The incident came one day after Obama
levied broad economic sanctions on Russia
as punishment for its threatening moves in
Ukraine. Moscow is widely believed to be
supporting pro-Russian separatists foment-
ing instability near the border, though the
Kremlin denies those assertions.
Obama discussed the new sanctions by
phone Thursday with Russian President
Vladimir Putin. The White House said reports
of the downed plane surfaced during that
call and Putin mentioned the incident to his
American counterpart.
Speaking later during a trip to Delaware,
Obama said the world is watching the
deadly incident.
It looks like it might be a terrible trag-
edy, he said. Right now were working
to determine whether there were American
citizens on board. That is our first prior-
ity.
Secretary of State John Kerry said late
Thursday that authorities still were trying to
determine whether any Americans had been
on the plane.

Elaine Stritch mourned
as a feisty, funny broad
NEW YORK (AP)
Elaine Stritch was more than
a Broadway actress. She was a
New York institution, strolling
around in a fur coat, pork pie
hat or oversized sunglasses. She
often wore shorts and ties, or
just black stockings and a white
flowing shirt. Her weapon of
choice was the zinger.
I like anything I dont
know about, she said in a 2010
interview with The Associated
Press. And I dont like most
of the things I do. She also
offered this: The most horrible
line in the English language
for me is, God, you havent
changed a bit.
Stritch, who became a sort of
shorthand for acting longevity
since she made her Broadway
debut in Loco in 1946, died
Thursday at 89 in her home
state of Michigan far from
her adopted home of New York
and her former longtime home
and stage at the Carlyle Hotel.
But Broadway and New York
immediately sent their love.
Liza Minnelli remembered
her as a true trail blazer. Her
talent and spunk will be great-
ly missed by so many of us.
Lena Dunham said on Twitter:
May your heaven be a booze-
soaked, no-pants solo show
at the Carlyle. Broadways
marquees were to dim in
her memory on Friday and a
Twitter hashtag was born
#EverybodyRise.
Although Stritch appeared
in movies and on television,
garnering three Emmys and
finding new fans as Alec
Baldwins unforgiving mother
on 30 Rock, she was best
known for her stage work,
particularly in her candid
one-woman memoir, Elaine
Stritch: At Liberty, and in the
Stephen Sondheim musical
Company.

Patrols traffic enforcement
yields drug arrests
INFORMATION SUBMITTED
COLUMBUS In the first
six months of 2014, the Ohio
State Highway Patrol inves-
tigated a wide range of fel-
ony offenses and increased
total drug arrests from the
year before thanks to troop-
ers who take extra time dur-
ing traffic stops to look for
possible indicators of crimi-
nal activity.
From January through
June, troopers made 5,652
total drug arrests represent-
ing a 19-percent increase compared to 2013 and a
44-percent increase compared to the previous three-year
average (2011-13).
Every day our troopers are out on the roadways
arresting felons and removing drugs from our communi-
ties, said Colonel Paul A. Pride, Patrol superintendent.
By being observant and spotting criminal indicators
during traffic stops, troopers continue to contribute to
a safer Ohio and improve the quality of life here in our
state.
Troopers made several of the largest drug seizures
in OSHP history in the last six months. A traffic stop
in Preble County led to the second largest marijuana
seizure on record with 2,330 pounds worth an estimated
$11.6 million. Troopers seized the third largest amount
of prescription pills in Allen County and the second
largest amount of non-prescription pills in Hancock
County.
Motorists are reminded that public participation is
critical to highway safety. Call #677 to report impaired
drivers or drug activity.

patrol.ohio.gov/doc/2014_Jan-Jun_FelonyAndDrug.pdf.

Today is Friday, July 18,
the 199th day of 2014. There
are 166 days left in the year.
Todays Highlight in
History:
On July 18, A.D. 64, the
Great Fire of Rome began,
consuming most of the city
for about a week. (Some
blamed the fire on Emperor
Nero, who in turn blamed
Christians.)
On this date:
In 1536, the English
Parliament passed an act
declaring the authority of the
pope void in England.
In 1792, American naval
hero John Paul Jones died in
Paris at age 45.
In 1872, Britain enacted
voting by secret ballot.
In 1932, the United States
and Canada signed a treaty
to develop the St. Lawrence
Seaway.
In 1944, Hideki Tojo was
removed as Japanese premier
and war minister because
of setbacks suffered by his
country in World War II.
American forces in France
captured the Normandy town
of St. Lo.
In 1947, President
Harry S. Truman signed a
Presidential Succession Act
which placed the speaker of
the House and the Senate
president pro tempore next
in the line of succession after
the vice president.
In 1964, nearly a week
of rioting erupted in New
Yorks Harlem neighborhood
following the fatal police
shooting of a black teenager,
James Powell, two days ear-
lier.
In 1969, Sen. Edward
M. Kennedy, D-Mass., left
a party on Chappaquiddick
Island near Marthas Vineyard
with Mary Jo Kopechne, 28;
some time later, Kennedys
car went off a bridge into
the water. (Kennedy was
able to escape, but Kopechne
drowned.)
In 1976, at the Montreal
Olympics, Romanian gym-
nast Nadia Comaneci
received the first-ever per-
fect score of 10 with her
routine on uneven parallel
bars. (Comaneci would go
on to receive six more 10s at
Montreal.)
In 1984, gunman James
Huberty opened fire at a
McDonalds fast food restau-
rant in San Ysidro, California,
killing 21 people before being
shot dead by police. Walter F.
Mondale won the Democratic
presidential nomination in
San Francisco.
In 1989, actress Rebecca
Schaeffer, 21, was shot to
death at her Los Angeles
home by obsessed fan Robert
Bardo, who was later sen-
tenced to life in prison.
In 1994, a bomb hidden in
a van destroyed a Jewish cul-
tural center in Buenos Aires,
Argentina, killing 85.
Ten years ago: A spokes-
man said California Gov.
Arnold Schwarzenegger
would not apologize for
mocking certain lawmakers
as girlie men, despite criti-
cisms from Democrats that
the remark was sexist and
homophobic. Todd Hamilton
gained a playoff victory over
Ernie Els to win the British
Open. Former Environmental
Protection Agency chief Anne
Gorsuch Burford died in
Aurora, Colorado, at age 62.
Five years ago: The Taliban
posted a video of an American
soldier whod gone missing
June 30, 2009 from his base
in eastern Afghanistan and
was later confirmed to have
been captured; in the record-
ing, the soldier (later identi-
fied as Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl)
said he was scared I wont be
able to go home. Authorities
in Tennessee arrested Jacob
Shaffer in the deaths of six
people, five of whom were
found slain near Fayetteville;
the sixth body was discovered
in Huntsville, Alabama. (The
victims included Shaffers
wife, her father, her brother
and teenage son. Shaffer later
admitted to all the killings
and was sentenced to life in
prison.)
One year ago: Once the
very symbol of American
industrial might, Detroit
became the biggest U.S.
city to file for bankruptcy,
its finances ravaged and its
neighborhoods hollowed out
by a long, slow decline in
population and auto manu-
facturing.

The Delphos Fire Department was called to
the J. C. Marks Market, corner of Second and

burglars Wednesday evening. Yesterday morning
about 3 oclock Groseman was brought to town
and lodged in jail. He was found 16 miles south-
west of here, near the Indiana line. Nine men
were in the gang that made the capture. As they
approached the house where Groseman had taken
refuge it was arranged that five should station
themselves around the outside, and four should
enter. As the four entered, the fugitive retreated
to a bedroom, closed the door, and prepared to
resist arrest. The men stepped up briskly, and
told Groseman to open the door and throw up
his hands, and that unless he did so they would
break down the door and take him, dead or alive.
Groseman, finding the game was up, than came
out and allowed himself to be taken.
He is suffering much from his wounded arm,
which is greatly swollen and powerless. He declared
that if he had not been crippled and sick from his
wound and exposure he would have fought it out to
the last. It is not thought that he will have any more
pistol practice for many a long year.
In the breast of Grosemans coat was found
$190, a portion of fractional currency. This has
been identified as the money taken at the rob-
bery of the Picker family, near Delphos. Old Mrs.
Picker has been here, and after seeing the man
arrested Wednesday night, says he is one of the
robbers. She stated beforehand that their silver
was wrapped up in a gingham cloths, and when
the valise obtained from the first man arrested
was opened the money was found wrapped in such
gingham as she described.
The third party concerned in the Picker robbery
is not known to be certainly under arrest, though
a man was in custody who is believed to be the
individual wanted.
It is thought that light will soon be shed on the
numerous burglaries and safe blowings that have
taken place here of late. Groseman has already
admitted that he has had a hand in some of the
bigger jobs. We are awaiting developments with
much eagerness.
Then on 8 January 1880 the New Hampshire
Patriot and State Gazette carried the following: On
Thursday night Sheriff Still, Constable Redsup and
others, attempted to arrest men suspected of the
murder of Bernard Pickens of Delphos, Ohio on
Christmas Eve, when the murderers secured $1500
after torturing Mrs. Pickens until she disclosed its
hiding place. The sheriff recognized Groserman
with two strangers and demanded their surrender.
Groserman drew a revolver and shot the sheriff
twice in the arm and once in the hand. He then
turned out the lights and general firing began,
the sheriff receiving two shots in the breast and
Redsup two; one of which, in the left breast, went
clear through the body, causing a mortal wound.
Groserman and one man escaped, but the third was
captured who refused to give his name. On a search
thirteen hundred dollars was found. Sheriff Stills
recovery is doubtful; Redsups death is certain.
Then a Special Dispatch to the Cincinnati
Gazette came from West Sonora, O. on Jan. 25.
The last of the men who so foully murdered
Bernard Picker at Delphos, on December 25 was
arrested a few miles from this place yesterday
by Marshal Perkins and a Deputy of Arcanum.
He had long baffled the officers of Van Wert and
other counties, and the citizens, who have taken
a deep interest in the detection of the miscreants,
are overjoyed. He was taken to Arcanum last night
and thence to Greenville, where he will await
identification. There can be no doubt as to his
being the guilty person.
The Sheriff of Van Wert County, in pursuit had
traced him as far as Arcanum, where he lost track
of him, and returned to Delphos. A photograph
of the criminal was left in the hands of Marshal
Perkins, who shortly discovered that he had fled
to Preble County. He is supposed to have passed
through here yesterday. The officers discovered
his course and gave chase, and captured him
without trouble among the hills east of Lewisburg.
He was taken through Sonora, late last evening in
custody of the Arcanum Marshals, who deserve
great credit for their skill and celerity in effecting
his arrest.
Finally the Cleveland Plain Dealer carried a
report from Van Wert on March 5.
The two Delphos robbers, Christ Grosseman
and William Carson, who tried to murder old man
Pickens last December, but only succeeded in get-
ting his money, were sentenced today by Judge Day
to 12 years imprisonment in the Ohio Penitentiary.
The various spellings of the names of the
criminals and the officials are typed just as they
appeared in the old newspapers. The name of
farmer Perkins was also spelled Picker. Does
anyone have information as to Perkins or Picker?
(Note: The final chapter of the Kloeppel and
Allemeier families and this southwest neighbor-
hood of Jennings Township will be carried in two
weeks.)

Shipwrecks gold inventory released
ASSOCIATED PRESS
CINCINNATI Deep-sea explorers
recovered millions of dollars in gold and
silver and a slew of personal items that are
a virtual time capsule of the California Gold
Rush, according to newly unsealed court
documents obtained by The Associated Press
that provide the first detailed inventory of
a treasure trove being resurrected from an
1857 shipwreck at the bottom of the Atlantic
Ocean.
The recovery effort at the SS Central
America shipwreck, about 200 miles off the
South Carolina coast, began in April and is
expected to continue throughout the summer.
The operation is being directed by a court-
appointed receiver of an Ohio company that
had been led by a treasure hunter-turned-
fugitive named Tommy Thompson, who first
found the Central America in 1988, a monu-
mental achievement funded by a group of
central Ohio investors.
Immediately after finding the ship and
recovering a fraction of its garden of gold,
Thompson became embroiled in a decades-
long legal battle over who had rights to the
treasure and how it was being dispersed. None
of the investors ever saw a return, despite the
gold selling for about $50 million, though
Thompsons supporters say the vast majority
went toward legal fees and loans.
In August 2012, after he failed to show
up for several court hearings, a warrant was
issued for Thompsons arrest. He has been a
federal fugitive ever since.
Kalida dads heartbreaking
Internet plea spurs strangers
KALIDA (AP) Just days
after his infant daughters death,
Nathen Steffel asked strangers on
the Internet for only one thing: He
and his wife wanted a photo of their
daughter without the breathing tubes
and tape that masked her little face.
The response has been over-
whelming.
Hundreds of photos, sketches
and paintings have poured into the
familys northwestern Ohio home
and their inbox.
Im getting messages in lan-
guages from all over the world,
Steffel said Wednesday. Its more
than I can count.
His daughter, Sophia, died last
Thursday at a Cincinnati hospital
from complications of a tumor in
her liver, six weeks after she was
born in Columbus. She was await-
ing a transplant when she died.
Her father posted a message on
Reddit asking if anyone could use
their photo of Sophia in the hospi-
tal and remove the tubes attached
to her face and wrist. Since she
was in the hospital her whole life
we never were able to get a photo
without all her tubes, he wrote.
It started because I just wanted
one picture, said Steffel, who
lives in the village of Kalida with
his wife, Emily, and their two
sons.
He initially was not sure about
posting the request online because
he was worried someone might
respond rudely. I guess the best
has outweighed the negative, he
said.
So far, they have received thou-
sands of messages expressing
support and hundreds of photos.
Someone else is sending a woven
blanket with Sophias picture.
David Valdez, who has been
painting portraits for several
years, made a digital painting of
Sophia within a few hours of see-
ing her fathers message.
I was having a bad day when I
saw this guy asking for a photo. I
just started painting, said Valdez,
a college student from New
Braunfels, Texas. It brought me
some sort of sense of relief to help
someone out.
Jillian Johnston, an illustrator
from Mountain View, California,
said she felt pulled to create her
own image of Sophia. She posted
it online and then woke up the
next morning to a flood of compli-
ments and several requests from
other parents who lost their chil-
dren in similar situations.
I have at least a dozen more
babies to paint, she said. There
are so many beautiful babies. Its
heartbreaking.
Steffel said his family now has
more memories of their daughter
than they could have imagined,
he said.
Its kept me and my wife occu-
pied reading all these messages,
Steffel said. Keeping our minds
off things.

Ohio Lottery
logs record sales,
$904M in profits
CLEVELAND (AP)
The Ohio Lottery is report-
ing another year of record-
high sales and profits, boosted
partly by revenue from new
video lottery terminals at three
racino sites.
Lottery officials say pre-
liminary data show traditional
sales and the VLT revenue
totaled $3.2 billion for the
2014 fiscal year. Thats $314
million more than the previ-
ous year.
It generated more than
$904 million in profits, which
are used to support Ohio
public schools. Total profits
increased by about $101 mil-
lion compared with the 2013
fiscal year.
The horse racing facili-
ties with new VLT play were
in Lebanon and Cincinnati
in southwest Ohio and in
Northfield in northeast Ohio.
Revenue reports show the
slots-like gaming at those and
other racinos generated more
than $146 million for the Ohio
Lottery during the past fiscal
year.
State weighing
drones as prison
security measure
DAYTON (AP) Drones
could join guards keeping an
eye on inmates in two Ohio
prisons, according to the state
corrections agency.
The Department of
Rehabilitation and Correction
is taking public comments
over the next month about
the proposal for unmanned
aerial vehicles at Lebanon
Correctional Institution
and Warren Correctional
Institution in southwest Ohio.
The drones, to moni-
tor prison yards and fences,
would augment existing secu-
rity staff as opposed to replac-
ing guards, Ed Voorhies, the
agencys operations managing
director, told the Dayton Daily
News on Wednesday.
The agency is consider-
ing three camera-carrying
options: a tethered helium
balloon, a quad-copter and a
fixed-wing vehicle.
The cameras may be
equipped with infrared sen-
sors to detect people outside
the fences approaching at
night to throw over contra-
band such as tobacco, drugs or
even weapons, he said.
Right now we have diffi-
culty detecting that kind of an
external threat, Voorhies said.
The state will need policies
for using the technology, said
Gary Daniels, with the Ohio
chapter of the American Civil
Liberties Union. He said that
while there is little expecta-
tion of privacy on prison prop-
erty, there is a potential for
misuse if the cameras are used
beyond the prison perimeter.

Worship this week at the
church of your choice.
Ultimately, there are only two basic motives which animate us, kindness or cruelty.
On the side of kindness is everything that unites and uplifts us: the kind or encour-
aging word, the helping or healing hand, the invitation to join the group and to be a
part of the great family of God. On the side of cruelty is everything that divides and
debases: the mean or cutting remark, the discouraging word, the clenched fist and
the hand which pushes away, the barrier to inclusion which says you arent welcome
here. There is love and there is strife. Love unites; strife divides. Love is kind; strife
is cruel. There is no third option here. You cannot be indifferent to the choice between
kindness and cruelty. We should pray that we steadfastly choose to be on the side of
kindness.
- Christopher Simon
I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do, or any kind-
ness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer it or neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

Pain Doctor Discovers Blood Flow-
Busting Material Into Miracle Socks
for Diabetics and Foot Pain Sufferers!
Breakthrough circulation-boosting fibers improve blood flow, relieve swelling,
boost oxygen flow, and eliminate foot fatigue - naturally in as little as 5 minutes!
Being Diabetic, I never had pain-free feet - UNTILNOW!
PAD ADVERTSEMENT
What part of your swollen, tired,
or achy feet would you like to see
go-away?
If you suffer from poor circula-
tion, injury, swelling or any condi-
tion that leaves your feet fatigued
and sore, then read on to discover
the breakthrough that can change
your life.
Good news comes in the form of
a pain-busting microfiber that is
used to weave a circulation-boost-
ing sock, called Bambusa
TM
.
Better Blood Flow
The miracle sock is made from
a new, patented anion-technology
that is weaved into every strand of
thread used to make a Bambusa
TM
sock. This special micro-fiber
thread is made from revolutionary
bamboo charcoal to stimulate
blood flow andrevitalize feet.
When this material comes in con-
tact with body-heat it is proven to
release circulation-boosting ions.
The 3D-weave technology used
in the material has been compared
to infrared light therapy to help re-
vitalize stiff and sore muscles. The
manufacturer, who also makes a
back and wrist sleeve, says the ma-
terial provides almost instant relief
to any part of the body it touches,
making it ideal for diabetics, ath-
letes,inflammation, stiffness and
swelling.
Anne M. from California agrees.
Bambusa socks are absolutely the
most comfortable socks I have ever
worn! My feet are no longer fa-
tigued!
Therapy
Without A Prescription!
When the socks were pho-
tographed using a thermographic
imaging camera, results showed up
to a 17% to 22% increase in blood
flow. This helped to improvemus-
cle oxygenation and decrease foot
fatigue. The socks have been proven
to provide extended relief from
cold, swollen and fatigued feet.
Doctor
Recommended
Pain specialist
of 30 years, Dr.
Jahner comments
on the 3D-weave
technology. In-
frared therapy has
been used for
years at medical
clinics to treat vascular and circula-
tory conditions. Physical therapists
use infrared therapy to speed re-
covery. Better blood flow equals
less pain. This microfiber works
much the same way.
"Circulatory dysfunction affects
MOST of the adult population in
the United States. Heart Disease,
Strokes and Diabetic conditions are
at epidemic levels; anything that
improves circulation improves cel-
lular health and vitality. I use the
Bambusa product myself and rec-
ommend it to my clients. It really
works! states Dr Jahner.
Results in Minutes?
John G. of California claims he
felt immediate results with his
tired, swollen feet. Without exag-
geration the relief was almost in-
stantaneous. It is like a heating pad
set to low and wrapped around my
calf. I will be replacing my entire
set of dress socks with these
socks!
Relief for Tired, Swollen Feet
Bambusa
TM
socks are not a med-
ical device or compression socks
because they dont restrict blood
flow. Utilizing the special negative-
anion technology, they comfortably
increase blood flow and oxygen to
tissues. My feet felt wonderful,
cool, and I never got that pins and
needles feeling anymore. I love my
Bambusa
TM
socks, says Nancy,
from NJ.
They are ideal for diabetics and
those suffering from neuropathy or
injury from repetitive use. Bam-
busa
TM
socks can also bring com-
fort to tired legs within minutes of
putting them on, energizing indi-
viduals who spend long hours on
their feet.
Goodbye to Pain and Numbness
Marilyn H. has suffered persist-
ent foot problems for years and no-
ticed fast results. The issue for me
was persistent numbness in my
toes - it was gone completely after
a few days of wearing these socks!
Being diabetic, I never had pain-
free feet - UNTILNOW!
I went out on the golf course
for 18 holes of golf, and when I got
home my feet werent swollen,
they werent sweating and my feet
didnt hurt, says Lou B. from New
York.
BENEFITS:

Cold Feet
Tom from NJ reports, I suffer
from chronic foot cramps. My feet
were sore for days after the cramp-
ing. My wife gave me the Bam-

socks, I wore them, and the
foot cramps stopped. I replaced all
my socks with Bambusa
TM
. My
feet feel great now.

The infrared anions generated by the charcoal bamboo in-
crease blood flow and deliver oxygen to the tissues. After
wearing for only minutes there is an increase in temperature
due to the increased blood flow, resulting in improved com-
fort and reduced swelling. Twenty minutes after using the
anion-fiber infused socks, patient has better blood flow and
less numbness.

Paws to Consider
Kids at the vet
BY DR. MARISA TONG, DVM
Its that time of year again. Its that sun is
shining, school is out, everybody seems happier
time of year. Its also a time of year that many
businesses, including veterinary practices, experi-
ence an influx of often loud and energetic young
visitors. Because the kids are
not daily cooped up and get-
ting an invaluable education
at the schoolhouse, we at the
veterinary hospital see many
sun-kissed, flip-flopped young-
sters who look like they just got
out of the swimming pool to
tag along with their parents or
grandparents for Fidos trip to
the vet. Man, to be a kid again.
I, for one, am always excit-
ed to see kids at the clinic. I
remember as a young girl tak-
ing our dogs to the vet with my
Mom and Dad. These child-
hood clinical experiences, as
well as an innate love of ani-
mals and people, powered my
drive to become a veterinarian.
You never know what may trig-
ger a passion or even interest
in a career in a young person.
I love the idea that everyday
experiences like taking the family dog to the vet
can enhance knowledge and overall personal life
experience.
I see a large variety of kiddos at the clinic.
Many of them seem genuinely excited to be there,
however, some of them are more shy and stand-
offish. I have seen the out-going inquisitive type,
asking me questions every step of the way who
are eager to tell me about this pet and all of the
other pets they have ever owned. As their accom-
panying adults sit back and beam with pride,
many children are very helpful and clearly take an
active role in the responsibility of owning a pet.
They even help answer my questions regarding
the patients eating habits, mobility concerns and
strangely they are sometimes the ones who know
the most detail about their pets bowel move-
ments and urinary habits.
This is in stark contrast to the times I walk
into an exam room full of juvenile-influenced
chaos. I have seen red-faced tantrums, siblings
pushing and punching, exam tables turned into
active diaper changing tables, creative rearrange-
ments of all of our retail products that live on the
lowest (and most accessible shelf), kids slamming
cabinet doors and discovering that, yes, the light
switches do turn the room lights off and on no
matter how fast you flip them.
In these rooms, I often find pets who are feed-
ing off of the stress level. A trip to the veterinarian
is at least to some degree very stressful for most
pets, but when you add screeching and tumult in
a tiny exam room with a bunch of little bodies,
it increases the stress level for poor Fido and
miserable Whiskers by ten-fold easily. Keeping
the chaos to a minimum is a goal to be achieved
with every child-accompanied
vet visit.
Children are always most
welcome to attend their pets
appointments and I encourage
it wholeheartedly. However,
keeping each pets stress level
in check is also very impor-
tant for the mental health of
the pet and for the safety of
the veterinary team and own-
ers alike. If Whiskers has been
pushed to the breaking point
by one too many shrieks in his
ear and pinches while Timmy
is manhandling him, then no
one in the room is safe from
Whiskers inevitable out-lash
when being examined and vac-
cinated.
Teaching children proper
pet respect is important for
the childs safety. Getting
children to ask an unfamiliar
dogs owner for permission to pet a dog before
approaching is basic safety and helps prevent
many dog bites. Many children do not have an
understanding of what a friendly versus a non-
friendly pooch may look like. Just because their
family dog appreciates their embraces, dogs in
veterinary lobbies often have enough stress to
deal with in their life and may not like hugs.
As a veterinarian, I get to hang out with kitties
and puppies all day long. Getting to interact with
the kids that come with them is just an added
bonus to my job. As summer picks up full swing,
the veterinary hospital becomes a little more live-
ly and boisterous with the pitter-patter of little feet
visiting with their furry friends. While these visits
can be enriching experiences in a young persons
life, keeping our pet patients stress levels to a
minimum helps keep the smallest of our clients
safe and happy. When Timmy and Suzy are safe
and happy, they will be able to look forward to
future visits where they can regale me with stories
of their dogs pooping abilities.
Perhaps memories of happy stress-free
appointments will help Timmy or Suzy become
the next generation of veterinarians.

McIlroy and Woods deliver at British Open
By DOUG FERGUSON
Associated Press
HOYLAKE, England Rory
McIlroy had everything go his way
Thursday in the British Open.
A lovely summer day in England with
abundant sunshine and minimal wind
allowed him to attack Royal Liverpool.
He made half his six birdies on the par
5s and kept bogeys off his card. And on
the day Tiger Woods made a promising
return, McIlroy took the lead with a
6-under 66, his best score in nearly two
years at a major.
Now if he can only find a way to get
to the weekend.
McIlroy either set himself up for a
good run at the claret jug or another dose
of Friday failures. In what already has
been an unusual year for golf, no trend
is more mysterious than Boy Wonder
going from awesome to awful overnight.
Six times in his last eight tourna-
ments, he has had a nine-hole score of
40 or higher on Friday that has taken
him out of the mix.
Its not like Ive shot good scores
in first rounds and havent backed them
up before, McIlroy said. Im used to
doing that. I just havent done it recent-
ly. Well see what tomorrow brings and
what weather it is and try and handle it
as best I can.
Hopefully, its just one of those
things and Im able to turn it around
tomorrow.
Woods also would like to keep mov-
ing in the right direction. He got off to
a troubling start with two quick bogeys,
nearly made another one on the fourth
hole, and then looked like a 14-time
major champion when he ran off five
birdies in six holes toward the
end of his round for a 69.
Not bad for guy who had
back surgery March 31, who
started taking full swings only
a month ago and who had not
played in a major in 11 months.
It felt good to be back out
there competing again, Woods
said.
Such pristine weather
how long it lasts is the big
unknown gave just about
everyone a chance to score.
Matteo Manassero broke par in The
Open for the first time since he was a
16-year-old amateur. He began his round
by hitting into a pot bunker, blasting out
to the fairway and holing out from 160
yards for birdie. He made five birdies on
the back nine, three on the par 5s.
That made him low Italian barely.
Francesco Molinari and Edoardo
Molinari have games that are nothing
alike, though they shot the same score.
They were in a large group at 68 along
with Jim Furyk, Sergio Garcia, Brooks
Koepka, Shane Lowry and Adam Scott.
Scott stands out as the No. 1 player
in the world, and because he was the
only player in the top 10 who played
in the afternoon when the wind made
Hoylake tougher. Scott went out in 31
and was slowed only by two bogeys on
the back nine.
Even in tame conditions, the British
Open can mete out punishment to play-
ers, to spectators and even a golf club.
Phil Mickelson was trying to get back
to even par when he hooked his approach
to the 18th beyond the out-of-bounds
stakes down the right side of
the hole and had to scramble
for a bogey and a 74. He
hasnt broken par at a major
since winning at Muirfield
last summer.
That still doesnt top the
bad day of Ernie Els. His
opening tee shot hit a specta-
tor in the face and the sight
of so much blood shook the
Big Easy. When he got to
the green, he missed a 1-foot
putt, then carelessly tried to
back-hand the next one into the hole and
missed that one. The triple bogey sent
him to a 79.
Henrik Stenson knocked a 30-foot
birdie putt off the 12th green and made
double bogey, then took two hacks out
of the shin-high grass left of the 17th
fairway. Walking to his next shot, he
snapped his gap wedge over his thigh
like a baseball player Bo Jackson
comes to mind who had just struck
out with the bases loaded.
Through all this activity, two names
came to the forefront McIlroy and
Woods, both trying to restore their
games from different circumstances.
McIlroys only victory this year was
at the BMW PGA Championship, where
he started his week by breaking off his
engagement with Caroline Wozniacki.
He could have had more chances to win
except for that 40 on the front nine at
Quail Hollow, the 42 on the front nine
at The Players Championship and the 43
on the back nine at the Memorial.

OHSAA Assistant
Commissioner Beau
Rugg has announced.
McGinnis takes over
for the retired Kyle
McNeely, who held
the post since 2009.
A native of Columbus,
McGinnis was named Ohios
2013 Baseball Official of the
Year. He is a past president
of the Central Ohio Baseball
Umpires Association and
now serves on the Board of
Directors of UMPS CARE
Charities, a non-profit orga-
nization established by Major
League Baseball umpires
(www.umpscare.com).
Under Ruggs leader-
ship, McGinnis joins 11
other individuals who serve
as the OHSAA Director of
Officiating Development in
their respective sport. The
Directors serve as instruc-
tors, state rules interpreters,
officials observers, liaisons
with local officials associa-
tions and consultants to the
OHSAA. More information is
posted at: http://www.ohsaa.

The OHSAA baseball
community is very fortunate
to have Dan McGinnis as
their Director of Officiating
Development, Rugg said.
Dan brings a wealth of
experience to the position and
has great credibility among
umpires in this state
and nationally.
McGinnis has
been a licensed
OHSAA baseball
umpire for 16 years
and has conducted
the state umpire
mechanics clinic
since 2011. He has been an
adult education instructor
since 2005.
Ohio has some of the
finest high school baseball
umpires around, McGinnis
said. Our state tournament
is second to none and we
need to make sure that we are
providing these student-ath-
letes with the best qualified
officials. Clinic participation,
observations and continuing
education need to be part of
the process in determining
their selection.
McGinnis recently retired
after 35 years in the phar-
maceuticals industry, includ-
ing the last 27 years as a
national account manager. He
is a 1978 graduate of Western

AP Source: Davis to Lakers
for two years, $2 million
ASSOCIATED PRESS
LAS VEGAS Ed Davis is on his
way to the Los Angeles Lakers, giving the
changing Lakers frontcourt another ath-
letic big man and Davis another chance to
show what he can do.
Davis agreed to a 2-year, $2 million
deal with the Lakers on Wednesday night,
a person with knowledge of the situa-
tion told The Associated Press. The per-
son requested anonymity because an
official announcement has not been
made. The deal includes a player
option for the second season, giving
him the chance to get back on the
market quickly if things go well.
Toronto made Davis the 13th over-
all pick in 2010, hoping the forward
would add a dynamic element to its
frontcourt. He showed real flashes
early on in his career, averaging 7.7
points and 7.1 rebounds in under 25 min-
utes per game during his rookie season.
Two years later, Davis was shipped
to Memphis as part of the trade that
sent Rudy Gay to the Raptors and he
struggled to find consistent playing time
on a Grizzlies team loaded with talent and
experience in the frontcourt. When the
Grizzlies re-signed Zach Randolph this
summer, it made Davis expendable.
The opportunity is there for him in Los
Angeles. The Lakers are going through a
period of transition, with long-time power
forward Pau Gasol headed to Chicago and
veteran center Chris Kaman gone to Portland.
The Lakers brought back veteran Jordan
Hill and drafted Kentuckys Julius Randle
with the seventh overall pick in June. But
thats about the extent of their depth in the
frontcourt, so the opportunity is there for
Davis to come in and make an impact.
After bringing back Hill and guard Nick
Young and acquiring point guard Jeremy
Lin in a trade with Houston, the Lakers
used up nearly all of their cap room.
So squeezing in Davis for $2 million
a deal that was first reported by Yahoo!
Sports could be one of the bargains of
the summer.
Paul Pierce officially joins
Wizards
WASHINGTON The
Washington Wizards have officially
signed veteran forward Paul Pierce.
Pierce, who turns 37 in October,
spent 15 seasons with the Boston
Celtics before being traded to the
Brooklyn Nets last season.
We are very happy to welcome
Paul to our organization and add his
championship experience and history of
clutch play to our team, Wizards presi-
dent Ernie Grunfeld wrote in a statement.
Pierce averaged a career-low 13.5
points last season in his first year with the
Nets. But he is a 10-time All-Star who has
gained a reputation as one of the best big-
moment players in the league
Led by guards John Wall and Bradley
Beal, Washington reached the second
round of the Eastern Conference playoffs
last season, their first postseason appear-
ance since 2008.
He will be a good fit alongside our
young, dynamic backcourt while his pres-
ence and leadership will make a difference
for us both on and off the court, Grunfeld
said of Pierce.

Hinchcliffe hopes for
success at home in Toronto
ASSOCIATED PRESS
TORONTO James
Hinchcliffe had no idea how
poorly hes run in Toronto,
his hometown race.
He knew the results
werent great
last year in par-
ticular but
had no clue his
eighth-place fin-
ish in the first of
two races in 2013
was his career-
best finish.
Is that the
best Ive done is
eighth? I knew it
was bad. I didnt
realize it was that
bad, Hinchcliffe
said Thursday.
Hinchcliffe loves return-
ing to the street course at
Exhibition Place, the track
he credits for sparking
his love of racing. But he
heads into this weekends
doubleheader in desperate
need of a successful week-
end. The Oakville, Ontario,
native has been plagued
this season by disappoint-
ing results, mechanical
issues, collisions and a
concussion suffered when
he was hit by debris at the
Grand Prix of Indianapolis.
Although he finished
sixth last weekend at Iowa,
Hinchcliffe heads home
with finishes outside the
top 10 in seven of 12 races.
Hes 11th in the IndyCar
standings.
He blames his results on
a lot of bad luck.
Running for a podium
in Indy GP and somebody
smoked me in the head with
a piece of a wing. I mean,
like why does that happen?
Who does that happen to?
Its just been one of those
years, Hinchcliffe said.
It is frustrating, cer-
tainly, because I dont think
the results match the effort
in the job that the whole
team is doing. But at the end
of the day, were sleeping
well at night because were
executing very well, and its
just really been a function
of wrong place, wrong time
a lot of the time this year.
Hinchcliffes bad luck
appeared to be on the
verge of ending when he
returned from the concus-
sion to qualify second for
the Indianapolis 500. But
his hopes for a win ended
when he collided with Ed
Carpenter late in the race.
Its all left Hinchcliffe
with a very sarcastic
tone as he prepares
for Saturday and
Sunday.
Well, I figure
Ill win both of
these ones. And then
in Ohio. And then
Milwaukee, Sonoma
and Fontana and I
call the year a suc-
cess, he continued.
Really no reason to
aim for anything less
than that at this point
because were pretty far out
of it.
Were just bummed that
we havent had the results
that we feel we deserve for
the effort weve been put-
ting forward.
Hinchcliffe is the only
Canadian in the field
because Alex Tagliani no
longer has a full-time ride
in IndyCar. Toronto native
Paul Tracy was the last
Canadian to win the event,
in 2003.
Hinchcliffe finished
third at Exhibition Place
in his first season in the
Indy Lights developmental
series. But the IndyCar race
has been difficult for him,
especially the second race
of last years doubleheader
when a stuck throttle kept
him from starting on the
grid and ended in a 21st-
place finish.
So, sarcasm aside, he has
understandably low expec-
tations right now.
I just assume its going
to go poorly, he added.
Its not really a supersti-
tion as much as it is a sta-
tistical thing. Ive had it
all here. Maybe now finally
theres nothing left to hap-
pen. I mean, (I) literally
didnt even make the start
of the race last year. It cant
get any worse than that.
Hi nchcl i ff e t hen
knocked on the table in
front of him.
My engineer would kill
me for saying that because
now Ill get hit by a meteor
or something, he quipped.
Sugar and Spice tournament champions announced
(Continued from page 6)
You have equal chances of missing when you play it safe
as when you try to swing for a home run, the Bills general
manager said. So why not go for the home run?
And Whaley didnt blink when reminded that home-run hit-
ters generally strike out a lot.
Yeah, he replied. And a lot of single hitters stay on
base.
The Bills prepare to open training camp in suburban
Rochester on Sunday featuring a new-look offense. The chang-
es reflect the swing-for-the-fences philosophy Whaley put into
motion this offseason in a bid to end the franchises 14-season
playoff drought the NFLs longest active streak.
Whaleys biggest move came in May while overseeing his
first draft since taking over as GM.
Whaley mortgaged a portion of the teams future by trading
next years first-round draft pick to move up five spots and
select Clemson receiver Sammy Watkins fourth overall.
It was a risky move, yet one Whaley believed was worth
the gamble by adding a dynamic piece to a passing attack that
had sputtered during quarterback EJ Manuels inconsistent and
injury-troubled rookie season.
Whaley didnt stop there in a bid to improve the supporting
cast around Manuel, the teams 2013 first-round pick.
The Bills used three of seven draft picks on offensive
lineman. Whaley shuffled his receivers by acquiring Mike
Williams from Tampa Bay and trading starter Stevie Johnson
to San Francisco.
Whaley even tinkered with the Bills already strong running
attack. He added experienced depth behind co-starters C.J.
Spiller and Fred Jackson by acquiring Bryce Brown in trade
with Philadelphia and signing Anthony Dixon in free agency.
Whaleys win-now objective comes at a most uncertain
juncture in the franchises 55-year history.
The Bills are for sale after team founder and owner Ralph
Wilson died in March; a new owner could be identified within
the next month.
There are concerns of the franchise eventually relocating
under new ownership.
And there are shorter-term questions as to whether the next
owner will consider cleaning house if Whaley and the rest of
the Bills front-office fails to deliver a winner.
Ownership change aside, there is a distinct sense the fran-
chise is entering a new era ushered in by Whaley, second-year
coach Doug Marrone and team president Russ Brandon, who
took over daily oversight of the team in January 2013.
Despite a 6-10 finish last season, the Bills showed signs of
being competitive following a major top-to-bottom overhaul.
While their defense improved in several areas, their offense
remained a weak spot in large part because of Manuel, whose
development was stunted by three separate knee injuries. He
went 4-6 in 10 games, with 11 touchdowns and nine intercep-
tions.
Given the new additions on offense, the pressure is on
Manuel to begin carrying his fair share of the load.
Whaley maintains his faith in Manuel, saying he has confi-
dence the quarterback can build on last season.
Whaleys series of offseason moves caught the players
attention by refocusing their commitment to win.

110 Card Of Thanks
THE FAMILY of Brad
McGue would like to thank
so many people that
touched his life in one way
or the other. There are
various ways to show
love, compassion, and
care for a person. We ap-
preciate the many people
that did take the time to
get to know and under -
stand Brad, who lead a
very complicated life. Re-
grettably, there are so
many people to name
without forgetting some-
one.
Thank you to the Delphos
EMS and the police offi-
cers that responded. Your
actions and your words of
comfort meant so much to
us at that difficult time.
We would like to thank
Pastor Angela Khabeb for
her continued support and
compassion during our
most difficult days. Thank
you Brenda Hoersten for
being our rock and our
strength. Eric Shier and
staff were absolutely won-
derful and caring....there
are not enough words to
express our thanks to all
of them! We would also
like to thank the physi -
cians, nurses and entire
staff of St. Ritas ICU De-
partment. Brad received
the best possible care with
so much compassion and
love shown to him and
everyone that visited.
Thank you to our awe -
some church family that
have done so very much
for us, assisted in any way
with the memorial service,
prepared a wonderful
luncheon or just lent us an
ear and a shoulder to cry
on! Thank you Brooke Ap-
ple for assisting with the
service. Brad would have
been proud!
And thank you to ALL our
family, neighbors and
friends that have been
there for us through the
most difficult days of our
lives.......to those that vis-
ited, to those that sent
food, to the many, many
caring people that sent
sympathy cards wi th
lovely notes inside, to eve-
ryone that prayed for Brad
and us, and also to those
that continue to keep us in
their prayers. We love you
all!

Dear Abby
Son decides life on the road isnt for him after all
DEAR ABBY: For years,
my wife and I were RV
enthusiasts. We have a son
who was envious about our
lifestyle and expressed a desire
to own an RV and travel the
highways. When we decided
to give up the practice, we
gave our travel trailer to him
as a gift.
The trailer has been sitting
on his property for more than
a year now and has never
been moved. He has kept the
license and insurance fees
current. He recently told us he
has changed his mind and is no
longer interested in traveling
with it. He has offered it back
to us.
We have decided to sell
it and wonder what, if any,
moral obligation we have to
share the proceeds of the sale
with our son. Your thoughts?
-- HOMEBOUND OUT
WEST
DEAR HOMEBOUND:
You gave your son the RV as
a gift; he is returning it to you
instead of selling it himself.
While I think it would be
generous of you to split the
proceeds with your son, I
dont think there is any moral
imperative that you must.
DEAR ABBY: My wife of
17 years just told me out of the
blue that she doesnt love me
anymore and hasnt for some
time. To say that this came as
a shock is an understatement.
Weve had our disagreements,
but we always worked through
them, or so I thought.
Because she has felt this
way for some time now, she
has hardly shed a tear. For me,
my heart is broken. I feel lost,
confused, angry, depressed
and I cant stop crying.
I wish I could die, but we
have children and I know I
cant leave them. We made
a pact years ago that if we
ever fell out of love wed
stay together for the kids until
they were grown. Now I dont
know if it was a lie or if shell
keep her promise.
Im writing this at midnight,
crying in the dark and alone.
I still love her and my heart
breaks every time I think
about it. Please tell me what
to do. -- DEVASTATED IN
TEMPE, ARIZ.
DEAR DEVASTATED: I
am sorry for the pain you are
feeling. What you must do
now is pull yourself together
and find out from your wife
when it was that the two of
you stopped communicating
honestly with each other --
because it seems your paths
diverged some time ago. She
owes you honest answers, and
you need to hear them.
After that, you may have
to decide whether you still
WANT her to honor that
long-ago promise to stay
together until your children
are adults. You might find it
helpful to stage some of these
conversations in the office of a
licensed marriage and family
counselor. Having a mediator
present could make it easier
for both of you. While I cant
promise counseling will save
your marriage, it may provide
you with the emotional
support you will need in the
weeks and months ahead.

Lasik surgery can offer dramatic improvements in vision
DEAR DOCTOR
K: Ive just
scheduled LASIK
surgery. Can you
explain what will
happen during the
procedure?
DEAR READER:
To understand
LASIK surgery, you
first need to know
a few things about
the eye and what it
does. Basically, your
eye is like a camera:
It focuses the light
coming into it to
make a sharp image.
That image then is
captured on a kind
of film (or, in digital
cameras, a sensor).
The parts of the
eye that focus the
image are primarily
the cornea and the
lens. The part that
captures the image is
the retina, a flat layer
of nerve cells at the
back of the eye. The
cells of the retina
then send the image
to the back of the
brain -- the part that
allows us to see and
interpret the images.
During LASIK
surgery, your
doctor uses a laser
to reshape your
cornea. The cornea
is the clear, round
window of tissue
that allows light to
enter the front of the
eye. By reshaping the
cornea, the surgeon
adjusts the focus of
light on the retina.
LASIK can improve
vision in people
who are nearsighted,
farsighted or have
astigmatism.
You will meet with
your surgeon and his
or her team before
your procedure.
During this exam, the
team will take precise
measurements of
your eyes, including
the shape and
thickness of your
cornea.
On the day of
your procedure, your
doctor may give
you a mild sedative
to help you relax.
You will lie down
in a reclining chair.
Youll be given
numbing eye drops
so you will not feel
pain or discomfort.
An instrument will
be positioned to keep
your eyelids open,
and a ringlike suction
device will be placed
on the front of your
eyes to hold your
cornea in place.
The surgeon
will use a delicate
instrument to slice a
tiny, hinged flap of
tissue from the front
of your cornea. You
will not see or feel the
instrument cutting
your cornea. The
surgeon will remove
the suction ring from
your eye and fold
back the hinged flap
of cornea.
At this point, the
surgeon will use the
laser to reshape the
underlying protein
fibers of your cornea.
This reshaping is
based on the precise
m e a s u r e m e n t s
made during your
pre-surgery exam.
Finally, the doctor
will reposition
the hinged flap of
cornea. No stitches
are necessary. (Ive
put an illustration of
the LASIK procedure
on my website,
AskDoctorK.com.)
LASIK is an
outpatient procedure;
it generally takes
10 to 15 minutes
for each eye. Some
surgeons work on
both eyes at one
sitting, while others
operate on only one
eye per sitting.
The cornea heals
quickly. You may
notice dramatic
i m p r o v e m e n t s
in vision almost
i m m e d i a t e l y
following your
surgery.

Trivia
(Continued from page 3)
Meanwhile, the Central America and its
gold sat untouched since 1991, the last time
Thompson and his team were at the site.
The new recovery operation was made pos-
sible after the court-appointed receiver award-
ed a contract to Tampa, Florida-based Odyssey
Marine Exploration to conduct the recovery in
hopes of bringing up more treasure and paying
back investors.
The inventories, unsealed by a federal judge
in Virginia late Wednesday, show that Odyssey
Marine has brought up 43 solid gold bars,
1,300 $20 double eagle gold coins, and thou-
sands more gold and silver coins.
Odyssey Marine could not immediately pro-
vide an estimate of what the gold is worth, but
its easily in the millions, based on past sales of
such items.
Shipwreck
(Continued from page 1)
Last years challenge was a huge success
with 22 teams rising to the challenge and
losing a total of more than 700 pounds. The
Optimists, the team from Speedway on South
Main Street, was the team that lost the highest
percentage of fat and won $500, which was
donated to the Optimist Club. Optimist team
member Susan Lunz was the overall winner of
the challenge when she lost the most percent-
age of fat. She also donated her $500 winnings
to the Optimist Club.
New sessions available this year for every-
one to participate in includes yoga, Gen-X and
Pilates, Doyle said.
People involved in the challenge have com-
mitted to give back to the community, raise
money and awareness for their cause, strive to
reach weight loss and fitness goals and improve
the overall health of the community.
Doyle is extremely passionate about help-
ing people attain their goals and has witnessed
many life-changing, weight loss success sto-
ries, which has inspired her enthusiasm for
reaching out to as many people as she possibly
can.
We want to help people make wise,
healthy decisions and remove the barriers to
their success, Doyle explained.
Team and individual winners of the

Challenge
(Continued from page 1)
The nomination was through an
application process and could be
based on a partial or full restoration.
Wileys thought was if the hall was
nominated and received the award, it
would honor the whole community.
Residents in the village would
not have known about the awards
and their focus was on trying to save
the building, she said.
She said there were so many
people involved volunteers as
well as people who came through
with donations that it was truly
a community-wide effort. It was an
uphill battle and they just kept going.
When volunteers got started,
they met with some resistance just
getting into the building to work on
it. They had to prove themselves to
the trustees, Wiley explained. That
space could be a parking lot right
now if it werent for the community
embracing the challenge.
For more than 100 years, the his-
toric building has been what Wiley
calls the heart of the village.
It holds everybodys memo-
ries all around me, she explained.
Everyday, people reminisce about
the parties and events held there
throughout the last century.
Wiley, who now resides near
Toledo, said she sees lots of restora-
tion projects get stalled for years.
This little community dug in
and accomplished what cities cannot
do in years, she said. They are a
model for just getting the job done
the old-fashioned way.
Wiley said she studies his-
torical preservation and was most
impressed with the fact that during
the restoration, the building was not
re-purposed and it has the same his-
torical presence. She said there were
parts of the building that were in
really bad shape.
They (the community) dont
have any idea what a phenomenal
job they did, she said.
She said now that peoples eyes
have been opened, they recognize
the building is viable again hosting
wedding receptions, baby showers,
birthday parties basically, back to
what it was.
In the past year, I have been to
three events at the hall, including a
New Years Eve party, she said.
Dr. Wes Klir said he was humbled
that someone on the outside nomi-
nated the building.
The beauty of what we did is, we
took something old yet historically
relevant and rejuvenated it into a
viable building that generates money
to sustain itself, Klir explained.
Its difficult saving those.
Up until 2011, the hall sat vacant
and unused for five years. Klir and
more than 20 area residents formed a
group called the Jennings Memorial
Association with the goal of restor-
ing the whole building and bring-
ing it back to its original use a
place to honor veterans, a commu-
nity gathering place, and a place
for meetings. At that time, razing
the building would cost close to
$125,000 and members of the asso-
ciation believed that action would
send a negative message to veter-
ans.
So, with more than five years of
no upkeep and a wreck of a build-
ing, the bicentennial and a desire to
see life brought back to this build-
ing, our group of dedicated people
got together and got this project
done, Klir explained. This build-
ing has the history we wanted for
our festivals.
In January of this year, a fund
drive was kicked off to install a
wheelchair lift a $25,000 project
in the building thereby making
the upstairs handicapped accessible.
This has been wonderfully
received and we have raised enough
that we are scheduled for the instal-
lation of this lift after the first of the
year, Klir said. As the last phase
of the fundraising efforts for this
project, the Memorial Hall is spon-
soring the craft show to be held the
Saturday morning of Fort Fest, with
proceeds going to the Wheelchair
Lift Fund.
Fort Jennings Memorial Hall was
built in 1916 in memory of Lieutenant
Colonel William Jennings, who in
1812 established a fort at the site
and built with funds from the origi-
nal Jennings Memorial Association,
Jennings Township trustees and the
Village of Fort Jennings. The prop-
erty was donated with the stipula-
tion that it always be used as a
war memorial. For decades the hall
served as a meeting place for vil-
lage council and American Legion
meetings, the Fort Jennings Library
and a museum of local relics until
1986 when maintenance became
too prohibitive.

Schetter said the volunteer base is
phenomenal.
Many hands make light work, he
said. When we held an organizational
meeting in March, I thought we were
going to have to move into the banquet
room so many people showed up. It is
wonderful to have so many participate
in a such a great day.
He considers the event like a big fam-
ily picnic and encouraged other commu-
nities to join in the parish offering.
We welcome all to come and enjoy
a family-style dinner and sit down
in front of big bowls of noodles and
mashed potatoes and chicken, he said.
Everyone seems to like that experi-
ence. Its like sitting down at your table
at home. And the best part you dont
have to do the dishes.
Schetter said people will be elbow
to elbow in the raffle booth and a big
crowd stays throughout the evening
for the 9 p.m. Big Ticket Drawing. The
grand prize is $1,000 with many other
money prizes as well.
The day starts with the baked goods
booth opening at 8 a.m. The Historical
Room on the second floor of the Parish
Center opens at 10:30 a.m. and is also a
good draw for people.
Immaculate Conception is proud of
its history and that pride shows in the
Historical Room, Schetter said. Its
run by a group who knows its stuff.
Anyone with questions will likely get
them answered.
Games and entertainment for all
ages begin after Mass with indoor
bingo, a fish pond, inflatable activities,
a petting zoo and a general store. A kid-
die tractor pull will be held from 2-4
p.m. with winners advancing in future
competitions.
Along with the family-style dinners
of chicken or beef served from 11 a.m.-
2 p.m. and again from 4-7 p.m., hungry
attendees will find the lunch stand with
homemade soups, sandwiches, French
fries and desserts from 11 a.m.-10
p.m. and candy, caramel apples, cot-
ton candy and sno cones will also be
available.
The Brass Notes will provide musi-
cal entertainment on the grounds.

Obama went ahead later
Thursday with a scheduled
evening of fundraising for
Democrats in New York, but
called Ukrainian President
Petro Poroshenko as he
traveled to the events. The
White House said Obama
and Poroshenko agreed that
all evidence from the crash
site must remain in Ukraine
until international investiga-
tors were able to examine it.
The president also
called both Prime Minister
Najib Razak of Malaysia
and Prime Minister Mark
Rutte of the Netherlands,
where the flight originated.
Officials said Obama and
Rutte discussed the need for
international investigators
to have immediate access to
the crash site.
The U.S. planned to send
a team of experts to Ukraine
to assist with the investiga-
tion.
Anton Gerashenko, an
adviser to Ukraines inte-
rior minister, said on his
Facebook page that the
plane was flying at an alti-
tude of 33,000 feet when it
was hit by a missile fired
from a Buk launcher.
