Project Description
Self-Summary

Project Name: Catastrophic Analysis Risk Browser
Client: Continental and Nationality Insurance
Firm: Tata Consultancy Services
Department: Underwriting
Author: Dinesh Vaithyalingam Gangatharan

Project Overview
Project Description
Introduction of Catastrophic analysis [Cat Analysis] to the in-house Underwriting application.
The existing underwriting application does not have the ability to analyze the Risk of
Catastrophic events.

We established the new protocol in the application for it to analyze the risk that could be
caused by Catastrophic events[Earthquake, Hurricane]

Introduction of 8 new JSP web-pages with each one of them having their own
functionality for Cat Analysis
Introduction of service to obtain the longitude and latitude through a synchronous web-
service before risk calculation
Updating to be done in the existing policy details on obtaining the location details.
Creation of a Data model where
Cat Analysis covers the entire policy
Multiple Cat Analysis can be done for every building, location or the policy as a
whole
New analysis can be done by taking the inputs from the existing analysis
Automate the whole process of Cat Analysis to have benchmark analysis where the
underwriters can compare with their calculated values.
Create an asynchronous web-service to do Cat Analysis and update the database.

Technical Details of the Project
Framework : Bridge MVC
Tools: IBM RAD, Polytron Version Control System, Cruise control, Oracle SQL
Developer
Server: IBM Websphere 1.6
Languages: Java, Javascript, JSP, Servlet, Ajax, Oracle Toplink

Web pages created using JSP. Every web-page was modelled using CSS Styles and
controlled using Javascript methods.
Application created using Java 1.4 as the existing application worked on that
Database schema created in Oracle 10G. Separate schema was used for developers
testing
Synchronous web-service created to communicate with another Java application which
had the location details based on the policy information
Asynchronous web-service created to communicate with a Dot-net based application
which has the algorithms in it to calculate building level catastrophic details. We created
XML based web-service to do Cat analysis.
Automation initiated by a shell script which would mail the developers if there was a
problem with any of the policies being automated. Automation runs every month with
when monthly policy details are being updated in the database schema. Automation
results will be the benchmark.

My tasks in the Project
I joined this project as a Trainee. Since this projected lasted for one whole year I was
exposed to all the functionalities in the project. On the successful completion of the project I
supported it for two months.
Created 4 of the web-pages. Pages were
Analysis creation as a new one and based on the old one
Final results screen which showed all the calculated values
The one which allowed the used to select to which building what
analysis they wanted to do.
Admin page that inputs the values for benchmark calculations
Created the automation process and the script to run as a monthly batch job
Updating the asynchronous web-service when new details were being added to them as
change requests [CR].
DDL and DML creation during the phase of Data modelling
On knowing the whole application and the code, switch through every screen to fix the
code during the testing phase.

Primary Goals
Business Goals of the Project
CNA which did not do catastrophic analysis was able to include this. This allowed it to
expand the existing policies and obtain new policies and it worked on the business
growth.

What I learnt from this Project?
As I was a trainee on this project, the business process was particularly new to me.
Javascript and CSS styles being used on JSP web-pages
Business level Java coding with industry standards
Shell scripting and process automation
Java web services.
