Description: I used the Freeskier Photo Annual magazine issued Janu-
ary 2014 to nd the picture I wanted to scan. I then found a picture that
already had a lot of very good shapes that I could work with to create my
design.
Date:

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 3
Cory Kerr
Program(s)/Tools:
Canon MP 620 series scanner
Microsoft Publisher
Objectives:
Comprehend image sizing
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and
audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe pro-
grams, including Photoshop.
Process:
I used a Canon MP 620 series scanner to scan the image I found in the
skiing magazine. I then copied the image into Microsoft Publisher to get
started on my project. I loved the image that I found because it already
had so much going on in the picture. I wanted to make this ier a simpler
one. I used the same font for the body text and title; however, I bolded
the title so it stood out and gave more contrast to the other text. After, I
change my original big title to a smaller one. I did this to grab the atten-
tion of the audience. I aligned both the body text and title with the skier.
Description: This project I photographed the image used in my ier de-
sign.

Program(s)/Tools:
Canon camera
Photoshop
Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills.
Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors,
then incorporate the colors into the layout.
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.
Print with full-bleed margins.
Process:
I used a Canon camera to take my photos. I then uploaded the image I
wanted to use for the ier in Photoshop. I rst edited the photo. I then
added my design with it. I used the Focus process to gure out my color
scheme. A monochromatic color scheme is what I used for the swirls next
to the black and white ballerina. I wanted it to make a uid motion so I
moved around the rectangles using the pen tool in Photoshop.

Masking
Objectives:
Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and ow
Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant message
Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
Use a mask to apply a lter to one part of the image
Apply typography principles
Process:
I used photoshop to blend two pictures together. I started with the
mountains, and then I placed the girl where I wanted her to show up. I
then used a mask on both pictures to get the images to look like how I
wanted them too. Then I added the qoute. I changed the typography in
the qoute to put emphasis on some of the words.

Description: My company is a backpacking company and is named after
the goddess of traveling, Aedona. I tried to stay to the idea of mountains
for all three logos.

Program(s)/Tools:
Illustrator
Objectives:
Create three completely different, original logos to t a company or per-
sonal image that will appeal to the audience.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos.
Gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most
to them.
Process:
I rst started off with a lot of different mountain sketches to get started.
I then used Pinterest to try and nd more ideas. Once I had my logos I
wanted to make, I used Illustrator to create the logos I wanted. I used co-
lourlovers.com to nd color schemes I liked. I used those schemes to add
color to my designs. I used the pen tool and the shape tool a lot in this
project. I tried to stick to simple shapes so they were easy to see.
Logos
Description: This is the brochure I made for my eighth project. It is based
off of a company that I made up for this project. I made a new logo for
my company, Nikki Bee. It is a photography company that I would have if I
was a photographer.

Illustrator

InDesign
Objectives:Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate quality images. (Incorporate at least four quality images
(Not including the logo). One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-
wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.
Write at least 250 words of original copy with at least three paragraphs,
headers, and subheaders.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.
Process:
I used Illustrator to create my logo. Then I used Indesign to put together
my brochure. I wanted to do the trifold basic design, so I used the lines in
Indesign to make a map of what I wanted it to look like. I used Photoshop
to cut pictures the way I wanted them. For example, I used the lasso tool
to cut the sunower to make a single shape. I then used the Focus Pro-
cess to determine my color scheme.
Brochure
Description:
When designing this logo, I thought a lot about the word my company
is using, Adeona. This is the Greek goddess for traveling. At rst I wanted
to make the logo of the goddess, but I couldnt make it simple enough
to work with. Since my company is a backpacking company I decided to
play around with trees and mountains as my logo designs. I really loved
how the mountain logos I made turned out. I continued to work with the
simple shapes of a mountain, and ended up with the logo I have now. I
wanted to also give the design something extra, so I decided to make
contrasting shadows in the logo. I found that the simpler the design the
better it looked.

Textwrangler
Objectives:Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so
the long side is 300 500 pixels.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it
appeals to a target audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale
for colors, appeal to target audience, design skills, etc,)
Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. (Use
TextWrangler (Macintosh) or NotePad++ (Windows))
Process: I used Illustrator to create the logo. I used the rectangle tool to
make squares. I then rotated them to make even diamonds in the design.
I lled them, and then proceeded to use the pen tool to ll the other side
of the diamonds.
Web Page
Description:For my project I used the grey scale for the overall scheme.
I used a series of shapes across my design. I used these shapes to move
the eye across the design by hierarchy. I then used white bars on the top
and bottom to add to my alignments.

Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic ier layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep
links in InDesign intact.
Process: Starting this project I used the Visual FOCUS principles to get an
idea of what my message was, how I wanted to use my shape, and what
audience I wanted to target. I then followed this process by sketching my
ideas. After I had my ideas down on paper, I started working on InDesign
with my favorite design. I used different methods of contrasting and
aligning to get my nished copy. I nally used wordpress.com to post my
nal project.

Illustrator
Objectives: Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.
Create a new logo to t a company or personal image.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and
letterhead.
Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
Process: For this project I used mostly Illustrator because I found that it
was the easiest for me to use and create the things I wanted to create. I
rst started off with the idea for my company. I found that I really liked
the idea of a caf that is eco-friendly. I came up with the logo g.f.l. that
stands for the title of my caf Green for Life. I then made the logo abbre-
viations also look like the word caf. I used the pen tool mostly to create
the logo, and the leaves I made in the background. I kept with a basic
type font so that it was easily read.
