Objectives:
Setup paragraph styles in InDesign, prepare an image to text-wrap using
Photoshop. Also print and fold a gate-fold brochure correctly.
Process:
Using a template with ruler guides set up in class, I wrote the text for the copy after
browsing the Lenovo design blog, and thinking about how different components in
my laptop could relate to nature.
Simple on the outside, and complex on the inside, I chose a simple logo that I created
in Adobe Illustrator. This was placed on the front cover, along with the hinge elements
and the words Laptops by Lenovo to clarify what the brochure was about to
unfamiliar audience members. After laying things out on a black background, images
were needed.
Initially I was going to use all pictures, so I found and selected a few: an SSD, CPU,
and RAM. These were placed in the brochure in InDesign, and outlined with a white
shadow to increase their contrast on the page. Additionally, they were cut out so
that there wasnt any chunky white background breaking the flow with lines and
boxes.
The logo was made in Illustrator by using the MicroGramma font and skewing it over
the top of a similarly transformed polygon placed under Think to resemble the
unfolding of a laptop. To emphasize the arc this would make, and to add some color
and visual flair, I drew a proportional arc from the top of the first stroke of the K in
Think down to the bottom right edge of the parallelogram.
Audience: Power users and people entering the technology industry looking for
a competitive laptop. Also, technology enthusiasts who have never heard of
ThinkPads, but know how computers work.

Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact.
Process:
After sketching a dozen layouts, I got the opinion of a lab aid, a friend, and my
roommate to decide which one I wanted to develop. When they all had one in
common that they liked, I made the layout with Adobe Indesign. The corner
elements pull the reader onto the page when set against a white wall, and the focus
continues in a rough Z pattern following the tabs that are rounded to follow the
corner elements.
Graduate was left smaller than Leadership Conference because I wanted to
emphasize what it was, rather than who it was for. The bulk of the body copy was
put first, as it was assumed that a readers eyes would quickly scan to the end of
the page, where they would find the pertinent details.

Objectives:
Learn to manage Photoshop layers and filters.
Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.
Apply appropriate typography.
Process:
1. Pull images from Google and place on a black background. Ensure at least
1080*1920 resolution.
2. Arrange with overlapping edges, and use a black mask over each layer to allow
painting in one at a time.
3. Where there are edges, leave things more transparent.
4. Make areas that are focal points fully opaque to catch attention, as seen with the
sound board and headphone emblem.
5 .Text was aligned with the soundboard and skewed using the transform tool to
make it appear more 3 dimensional.
6. The color level tool was applied to a layer placed over the top of the sound decal
on the bottom left to make it green rather than yellow.
7. A narrower font was used, matching that used by AKG to have the viewer
associate it with the companies branding.

Objectives:
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design
Use text boxes for layout in Word.
Insert and edit images in Word.
Process:
After scanning a picture, analyzing potential text areas, and getting a feel for an
appropriate event, I determined that translucent layers would need to be used to
bring out most of the text, since the picture is full, and rather busy. The picture of
the Salt Lake City temple was taken from the May Ensign, and placed in Microsoft
Word as a fill for a shape to allow transparency effects. After fading the picture out,
more contrast was needed to enable the use of white text for the information on
the bottom left.
To accomplish this, another shape was placed over the top of the picture, with a
four-stop, custom gradient applied to match the angle of the triangle suggested
by the steeples on the temple. After this was accomplished, some brightness was
added, and the informative body text was created and ordered to follow the curve
of the sidewalk edging.
The banner bridging the lighter top box was colored by using a color dropper to
find the RGB values of one of the pinkish-lavender hues in the petals of the tree and
inverting them to create a complimentary color scheme, with most other hues
being faded to near-monochrome. Transparency was added to make the ribbon
more cohesive with the softer details and muted colors of the background picture.
Lastly, the message on the top right was adjusted to roughly follow the angles made
by the temple steeples. Font size was adjusted to emphasize the important words,
and present an additional message, Teaching Marriage More.

Matching letterhead and business card designed using a personally created logo.

Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.
Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.
Process:
The entire design hinges on rectangles and circles being repeated and re-sized
proportionally to create the font used for the company logo/name. I used the
rectangle and circle tools in Adobe Illustrator, and merged the shapes when
necessary to create more complex letters like the U, T, and I. The capital EYE is left
as separate shapes to give it more of an overlapping outlines look. The watermark
was made using a larger, faded version of the eye-looking Os from the title.
This is repeated again on the back, using the shift+drag method to create nearly
identical curves alternating between black and white for the back of the business
card. Drawing circles and rounded ovals over the stripes on the back, I inverted the
colors of the shaped and used black and white instead of black and gray to highlight
the elements that make it look like a cassette tape.

Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Size and crop the image.
Adjust image brightness, contrast, and saturation levels.
Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image.
Desaturate the selected portion of the image.
Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.
PROCESS:
The first image was taken just after a cloud-front had passed over Rexburg.
Though the building is relatively darker, the sky is the focal point, and lots of detail is
preserved with the different shadings and hues.
Light as represented in the second image is much different: I was going for a
near-monochrome look, using a high-output LED light shining through the woofer
chassis of a Harman Kardon speaker system onto a textured, near-white wall.
Focus is changed on the next two examples simple by using the touch to focus
feature of most smartphones on my Nexus 4. One touch was on the flower
cluster, and the other was on the bricks of the Taylor building, providing enough
clarity to see the outline of individual bricks.
The bike and parts of the stand are sharpened in the fifth photo, to help bring it
out from the softer details. Using the rule of thirds, the two rightmost vertices of
the lines used to make thirds land on the middle of the bike, and the labeling on the
building.
Lastly, the fire hydrant was used as an example of using lead room. I got the idea
when I noticed how much it contrasted with the grass, and imagined its face to be
the larger protrusion.

Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo.
Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS.
Identify hex colors for web design.
Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.
Process:
Having used HTML and CSS a small amount before, I copied over the template
provided by the class, and looked over some of my previous projects to job my
memory on how to float images, align text, and create div containers.
1. Create a repeating background with CSS after using a websearch to find a
seamless, square, black marble like background.
2. Invert the black marble background and use this to style the body container
background
3. After putting in the H1 text and the logo, I centered both of them with CSS, and
added a black background to H1 items.
4. A lime green border was added to the body, with a radius of about 20 pixels to
round them off.
5. H2 headers were used, repeating the white text on black background look from
the first one.
6. After floating these images into position, I noticed that the text was too crowded,
and went to the CSS to add a ~10px margin.
7. To select colors and place them in the CSS, used Kcolor, which allows hex creation
based on a color palette, or by on-screen sampling.
8. Coding like this is best done in an editor that supports syntax highlighting. I use
gEdit, which comes by default with several Linux distributions.

Objectives:
Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator.
Process:
The first logo was created by using the pen tool to draw an S-curve over another
line, filling it in with gray to look like an old airplane propeller.
The second was made by extensive use of Ctrl+D which repeats the last action.
After making a staircase of bricks the shortcut was used to duplicate and move
them over until the wall was long enough. Then, I used shift-select to choose bricks
for the T and W, and make them orange and blue with fill color.
The last logo was made by simply typing the word Stevens and then using the pen
tool to extend the v into a W and continuing off of that until it spelt Wall. After
the logos were created, I noticed they were too wide, so I re-sized them without
holding shift to make them more narrow.
