Level: High beginner and above.
Topic: Using the simple present tense to describe general information and facts. Learning Objectives: 1. Understand the different circumstances of when to use the simple present tense. 2. Forming correct sentences with the simple present tense in regards to facts and generalizations about different countries. Vocabulary: The verbs to have, to do, and to be and their conjugations. Adverbs of frequency (always, frequently, often, usually, sometimes, rarely, seldom, never, etc.) Rationale: The main function of this activity is to prompt students to use the simple present verb tense when explaining 1) permanent truths or facts 2) routine actions or habits 3) internal truths 4) as a narrative device 5) feelings and senses 6) future timetables 7) single events. Functions and Structures: Describing with simple present- It rains in India. It never snows in Costa Rica. Materials: This activity requires cards with different countries names on them (this can be personalized to this class depending on where students are from). Also a handout with the 7 different instances of when to use the simple present tense is beneficial for students to have. Procedures Activity Procedures Time Interaction Purpose of Procedure Explanation of verb tense -Before beginning the activity T should explain to the Ss the rules of the verb tense -T writes the simple present rules on the board 8 mins. Teacher to student The purpose of this activity is for the teacher to clarify to the students what the simple present tent tense is and the and distributes the handout. -T models the usage of simple present with different sentences and circumstances -T answers any questions that the Ss may have. different circumstances of when to use it. This period of time also allows Ss to ask questions and raise concerns with the new verb tense. Country Facts -T divides up the class into partner pairs -T distributes cards with names of different countries to the students -T instructs students to practice making sentences about what they know about each country using the simple present tense. Encourage Ss to use the verbs to have, to be, and to do along with other action words. -T monitors each partner pair as they speak and write down their sentences. 7 mins. Student to student This activity is intended to provide practice to the students. Students are challenged with making sentences that follow the rules associated with the simple present tense. By speaking and writing the sentences down, the Ss will hear and see the correct way to use the verb. Share sentences -T then asks for one S out of each partner pair to write a sentence about each country on the board and read it aloud to the class. 4 mins. Student to student By sharing sentences Ss are again reinforcing the verb tense uses. By writing them down and reading them aloud to the class, Ss can better comprehend the verb tense while learning new things about other countries. Wrap Up -T thanks class for participating and instructs Ss to find three more facts, generalizations, habits, etc. among their respective countries for homework. 1 min. Teacher to Students The purpose of the homework that is given is that students are learning more about their assigned country and not forgetting the rules of the simple present tense when class ends.
