Chelsea McQuarrie Theme: Grammar- Simple Present Time: 20 minutes

Level: High beginner and above.


Topic: Using the simple present tense to describe general information and facts.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the different circumstances of when to use the simple present tense. 2. Forming correct sentences with the simple present tense
in regards to facts and generalizations about different countries.
Vocabulary:
The verbs to have, to do, and to be and their conjugations.
Adverbs of frequency (always, frequently, often, usually, sometimes, rarely, seldom, never, etc.)
Rationale: The main function of this activity is to prompt students to use the simple present verb tense when explaining 1) permanent truths or
facts 2) routine actions or habits 3) internal truths 4) as a narrative device 5) feelings and senses 6) future timetables 7) single events.
Functions and Structures:
Describing with simple present- It rains in India. It never snows in Costa Rica.
Materials:
This activity requires cards with different countries names on them (this can be personalized to this class depending on where students are
from). Also a handout with the 7 different instances of when to use the simple present tense is beneficial for students to have.

challenged with making sentences that
follow the rules associated with the
simple present tense. By speaking and
writing the sentences down, the Ss will
hear and see the correct way to use the
verb.
Share

write a sentence about each country on the board
and read it aloud to the class.

By sharing sentences Ss are again
reinforcing the verb tense uses. By
writing them down and reading them
aloud to the class, Ss can better
comprehend the verb tense while
learning new things about other
countries.
Wrap Up -T thanks class for participating and instructs Ss to
find three more facts, generalizations, habits, etc.
among their respective countries for homework.
