regulatory and business recovery goals Financial institutions are dependent on IT application for the running of their every day operations. The type of Disaster Recovery solution chosen by the bank was driven by the outcome of the business impact analysis done by the bank. A business impact analysis (BIA) enumerates the risks and their likely impact on the business. To mitigate the identified risks, the bank chose to deploy a three-site Disaster Recovery solution, some of the key considerations for choosing the solution were: Critical banking application required zero data loss, the Recovery Point Objective for these applications are zero The bank wanted a solution that would mitigate the case where a regional disaster would bring down the primary data center 1 | 2011 Sanovi Indias leading Public Sector Bank deploys 3-site Disaster Recovery Solution Three Site Disaster Recovery Why & How? A three site DR solution address the considerations listed above. A zero RPO requirement requires data to be replicated in synchronous manner. Synchronous replication requires that when data from the server is written to storage, a copy to the local storage and a copy to the remote storage be saved on the storage before the application can continue. The network delay incurred in writing a copy to the remote storage bounds the distance that synchronous replication can be used for. Typically the distance that synchronous replication can be deployed is 60 to 100 kms. Hence to meet zero data loss requirement the bank chose to have a near site. To cover the scenario in which a regional event can impact the primary site and the near site, a DR site was chosen to be in a different region of the country. Using Sanovi's dashboard and automation capabilities the customer continues to test their recovery readiness at regular intervals with minimal human intervention. The management team and regulators have ready access to reports on how well the bank is meeting their business continuity regulatory requirements. Results The bank has a heterogeneous environment, the core banking application runs on AIX servers, Sybase database and Hitachi storage and replication. The three site data flow is setup for synchronous replication between primary and near site and asynchronous replication between near site and DR site. Other non critical applications are configured between primary and DR site only. They run on Solaris servers using Oracle database and Oracle DataGuard for replication. Sanovi worked closely with the bank and the System Integrator to validate the solution design before implementation stage. The bank chose Sanovi DRM as the platform to monitor and automate all the DR process for this three site solution. Sanovi DRM monitoring includes real time visibility into the health and performance of Hitachi and Oracle DataGuard replication. Monitoring also provides real-time report on application level RPO. Sanovi DRM recognizes the various phases of the DR lifecycle that includes data replication during normal times and the automation required to failover in times of primary outages and automation for doing DR drills to test the recovery readiness of the solution. Sanovi's Recovery Automation Library provides readymade templates that make it easy and time bound to implement automation of failover and DR drill for all the applications. To redirect business users transactions to the DR site in case of an outage at the primary, the bank uses the network NATing technology. Sanovi software interfaced with Cisco routers to automate the process of changing the NAT tables so that user access to application is redirected to the DR site in a transparent manner. Managing the bank's three site DR solution About Sanovi Sanovi helps organizations across the globe proactively manage disaster recovery (DR) environments and ensure business managers that applications can be recovered in compliance with service level agreements. Sanovi DR Management Suite, is a comprehensive family of enterprise- class DR management software solutions for validating, monitoring, testing and automating recovery.
