2. A barber takes exactly 25 minutes to complete one hair cut. If customers arrive in a Poisson fashion
at an average rate of one every 40 minutes, how long on an average must a customer wait for service?
What is the probability that a customer need not wait for service? [16]

6. A product is produced at the rate of 50 items per day. The demand occurs at the rate of 30 items per
day. Given that setup cost per order = Rs.100, holding cost per item per unit time = Re.0.05, and
shortages being allowed, what is the shortage cost per unit under optimal conditions if the lot size is
of 600 items. [16]

2. The arrivals at a telephone booth are considered to be following Poisson process with an average time
of 10 minutes between one arrival and the next. Length of the phone call is assumed to be distributed
exponentially with a mean of 3 minutes.
(a) What is the probability that a person arriving at the booth will have to wait?
(b) What is the average length of queue that forms from time to time? [16]
3. The cost of a new machine is Rs 5,000. The maintenance cost of nth year is given by Rn =500(n-1),
n= 1, 2 ...... Suppose that the discount rate per year is 0.5. After how many years will it be economical
to replace the machine by new one? [16]
4. (a) Explain the “best strategy” on the basis of minimax criterion of optimalities.
(b) Describe the maximin principle of game theory. What do you understand by pure strategies and
saddle point? [8+8]

2. A barber shop has space to accommodate only 10 customers. He can serve only one person at a time.
If a customer comes to his shop and finds it full, he goes to the next shop. Customers randomly arrive
at an average rate of 10 per hour and the barber’s service time is exponential with an average of 5
minutes per customer.
(a) Write recurrence relations for the steady state, in FCFS steady system.
(b) Determine the probability of being barber shop is empty. [16]

5. A T.V. repairman finds that the time spent on his jobs have an exponential distribution with mean
of 30 minutes. If he repairs sets in the order in which they come in, and if the arrival of sets is
approximately Poisson distribution with an average rate of 10 per 8 hour day, what is repairmen’s
expected idle time each day? How many jobs are ahead of the average set just brought in? [16]

2. At what average rate must a clerk at a super market work in order to ensure a probability of 0.90 that
the customer will not wait longer than 12 minutes? It is assumed that there is only one counter at
which customers arrive in a Poisson fashion at an average rate of 15 per hour. The service by the clerk
has an exponential distribution. [16]

6. The annual demand of a product is 10,000 units. Each unit cost Rs.100 if orders are placed in quantities
below 200 units but for orders of 200 or a above the price is Rs.95. The annual inventory holding cost
is 10% of the value of the item and the ordering cost is Rs.5 per order. Find the economic lot size.
