A: Hi, there. My name‟s Paul Brown. I‟m from the United States.
B: Nice to meet you, Paul. My name‟s Kelly Cook. You can call me Kelly. I‟m from
Canada.
A: Nice to meet you, too, Kelly. Canada is a beautiful country!
(1)Hi, there. 你好。
【Kim‟s Note】This is a very casual and common way to greet someone. However,
guys use this greeting to girls much more frequently than girls use it to guys. It is
a little bit flirtatious because it sounds as though someone has just caught your
eye for attention. But if you want to get a guy‟s attention, I highly recommend this
greeting!
A: I don’t think we’ve met before. My name‟s Sam.
B: No, I don‟t think so either. Nice to meet you. I‟m Ann.
A: Hello! Are you a friend of Bill’s?
B: Yes. My name‟s Sally. And you are…
A: I‟m his roommate, David. I’ve heard so much about you from Bill.
A: Hi, beautiful day, isn’t it?
B: It sure is.
【Kim‟s Note】 This is probably the most common greeting among strangers. Don‟t
let an opportunity to speak English pass you by because you don‟t know what to
say in response to this common greeting!
How are you?” “Fine, thank you,
and you?”
“I‟m fine, too.”
How are you?” “Fine, thank you, and you?”
“I‟m fine, too.”
“Beautiful day, isn‟t?”
are you?”
(1)My name‟s…
(2)I‟m from…
(3)Are you a friend of…?
(4)Excuse me, but aren‟t you…?
(5)I‟ve heard so much about you from…
(1)I don't think we’ve met before.
【Stone‟s Note】
我可是十年前就学过“I don't think we‟ve ever met before.”,但令人遗憾的是,以
A: I hope you don‟t mind my asking, but haven‟t we met somewhere before?

(1)I hope you don‟t mind my asking, but haven‟t we met somewhere before?
【Kim‟s Note】This is a polite and clever way to meet someone! If you think a
person looks interesting, you can try this sentence to break the ice and strike up
a conversation.
(1)as a matter of fact 事实上
* I was just going to call you, as a matter of fact, I just dialed your number.
* As a matter of fact, I do study English at Beijing Uni versity.
* As a matter of fact, everything in the store is fifty percent off today.

【Kim‟s Note】I know that there are some books in China that discourage the use
of this greeting. They claim it is too “Chinglish” and it is Chinese in origin, not
American or British. I completely disagree! I have heard people use this greeting
my whole life all over the United States. So, I consider it one of China‟s great
contributions to international communication. Use it and be proud of your

China! Now I say it all the time and my American friends tease me about my “baby
talk!”

Saying “goodbye” is usually a longer process in English than saying “hello”.
There are usually several exchanges and wishes before the two parties actually
part! If you say “Bye-bye” abruptly and walk away quickly, the person you were
speaking to will feel very strange and wonder if they offended you in some way.
That‟s why we give you so many different options for saying goodbye.

(1)Thank you!
(2)Thank you so much!
(3)I‟m very grateful to…
(4)I can‟t begin to tell you how much I appreciate…

(6)I want to thank… for…
(7)I want to express my gratitude to…
(8)I want to express my appreciation to… for…
(9)I just want to say thank you to…
(10)Thank you very much.
【Culture Note】
The phrase „thank you‟ is commonly used in both English and Chinese. It
expresses gratefulness for a number of things, such as for a present, an invitation,
for help, or for an offer of help or other kinds of offers. However, there are some
differences between the two languages in the exact way in which this phrase is
used.
Typically in Chinese, this phrase is not used very often between very close
friends or family members. If it is used in such cases it may sound strange or
imply a distance in the relationship. However, in English, „thank you‟ is used in
almost every circumstance, no matter whether the people are strangers or
intimate friends. Not to use it would often seem rude and might indicate that the
person is taking the other for granted.

【Culture Note】
In Chinese when people pay compliments, it is common to refuse them; for
example, if somebody says, “You speak English very well”, the response may be
“No, no, my English is very poor.” And people may say this, even if they feel that
their English is good. To accept a compliment might seem too arrogant in Chinese.
However, in English people can reply in a variety of ways. In the majority of
circumstances, it is perfectly normal to accept a compliment, unless the
compliment is very obviously untrue. So people frequently respond by simply
saying “Thank you”. Another more modest and useful way is to say, “Far from it.”
I think this is better than refusing the compliment altogether and more modest
than just saying “thank you”.
A: Your English/Chinese is really amazing.
B: Far from it.

often have to insist that my students apologize to one another. I never let them
just blurt out a one word apology.

Maybe a good piece of advice for dealing with foreign friends is to offer your
advice as a suggestion. Americans particularly don‟t like being told what to do, but
are usually happy to take a suggestion. So, if you tell someone they HAVE to visit
The Great Wall while they are in China, they may have a negative feeling. But, if
you tell someone you highly recommend or suggest they visit The Great Wall you
will be more warmly received.

When Westerners wish to invite people to dinner or something, it is normal
to ask them a week or so in advance. This is because Westerners often schedule
their time quite carefully, and like to plan what they are doing. If less notice than
this is given, (in other words, if they are asked less than a week or so in advance)
it implies that the invitation is a relatively casual one, and that it does not matter
too much if the people cannot accept. So if the host particularly wants them to
come, it is wise to give them sufficient notice. If the host does not do this, the
people may already have something planned and therefore have to decline the
invitation.
Of course, among close friends it is very common to issue spur of the
moment invitations. Close friends don‟t have to take advanced schedules into
consideration. They are just happy to be able to get together and don‟t suffer any
hard feelings if someone is too busy to make it to a last-minute gathering.

One of the biggest areas of cultural difference related to making requests is
smoking. It is not allowed in nearly as many places in the west and people
frequently ask others not to smoke. If you hear this request, try not to react rudely.
Think of it as a chance to show off your good manners.

It‟s true that Chinese culture values politeness and cares about keeping face.
However, in the twenty-first century, arguing is sometimes necessary. If you never
argue or stand up for what you believe in, people will not admire you for giving
them face. They will think that you are easily pushed around. Of course if the
person who angers you doesn‟t understand English, you can just vent your
feelings in a language he doesn‟t understand!

enjoy hearing a little gossip every now and then is probably lying. In fact, I find
that the people who deny gossiping the strongest are the ones who enjoy doing it
the most. Don‟t forget that listening to other people‟s conversations is a great
source of gossip and a fantastic way to improve your listening comprehension and
concentration skills!

2. Go to hell!(去你的!)
6. You dickhead!(你这个白痴!)
8. Fuck off!(滚蛋!)
9. Asshole!(混蛋!)
【Lisa‟s Note】Although it seems that everyone swears all the time in American
movies, in real life you should be careful about when and where you swear.People
who swear a lot may seem rude, angry, or uneducated. Pay attention to the people
you‟re talking to, if they never swear, they may feel shocked if you use swear
words with them. Even polite people may say“Damn it!”or“Shit!”when they are
very angry or frustrated, but the other expressions are so rude that I never say
them.
