Movie Analysis

Inception, a British American thriller film, was release last July 2010 with box
office hit of $825, 532, 764 worldwide. Inception is a science-fiction film that is not
sequel, remake or adaptation thats made into second-highest-grossing debut on its
Opening week behind the movie Avatar. The cast of this film includes Leonardo
DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Tom
Hardy, Dileep Rao, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger, and Michael Caine. These casts play
different character that makes the movie beautiful and successful.
Characters
Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) Main protagonist of Inception, a professional thief
who specializes to extract secrets and information of the target through
dreams. He used to make the targets information/secrets concealed in a vault
and getting the information inside the vault.
Mal Cobb (Marion Catillard) Doms deceased wife. She appeared as antagonist and
messed up the plan of Dom Cobb. She is the manifestation of Cobbs Guilt
when his wife commits suicide after they go to deepest dream level or what
they called limbo and implant an idea to his wife.
Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) Cobbs partner that manages targets information and
research the target about their mission. A long time companion of Cobb in
every mission he has.
Ariadne (Ellen Page) a graduate student of architecture that is recruited to make
various dreamscapes. This dreamscape described in this movie as maze.
Eames (Tom Hardy) associate of Cobbs. He usually referred to a fence but his
specialty is forgery. He steals the identity of a certain person in a dream. He
uses his ability to impersonate that has close relationship to the target.
Mr. Saito (Ken Watanabe) a Japanese businessman that hire Cobb for the teams
mission. He has connection to powerful person in the world that can help
Cobbs condition.
Yusuf ( Dileep Rao ) An Avant-garde pharmacist that want to do works unsupervised,
unregistered and unapproved of by anyone. He is capable of making powerful
sedative compound that let them go to the third level of dream.
Robert Michael Fischer (Cillian Murphy) A business empire heir and the mission
targets. He was been target by Mr. Saito to implant an idea of not continuing
the inherited business. Though that he gain everything materially, he lacks
attention to his father and deeply emotionally.

Peter Browning ( Tom Berenger ) Fischer Godfather and current executive of the
business empire. He was the one that Eames impersonates. He has been with
Fischer in his life and spent more quality time than Fischers Father.
Professor Stephen Miles (Michael Caine) Cobbs mentor and father in law. He was the
one that recommend Ariadne being his College Professor.

Movie Plot
Cobb and Arthur are expert in extracting information in their target subconscious
by using experimental military technology that infiltrates someone else subconscious
and with this technology their shared dreams. Their last target Mr. Saito was sabotage
by the memory of Cobbs deceased wife Mal Cobb. But in the end, Mr. Saito reveals
that he was actually testing the team to perform a difficult mission that is called
Inception. Inception is an act of implanting idea to someone else subconscious. Mr.
Saito targets Robert Michael Fischer, his biggest competitor, to break the business
empire that Fischers father built. At first Cobb is not agreed to the Mission of Mr. Saito
but Mr. Saito offers that He will use his influence to clear Cobb murder charges when
Mal Cobb suicide and that to return home and be with his children.
Dom Cobb set and assembles team that can help him: Eames, a Conman and
Identity thief/forger; Yusof, a chemist that can make sedatives; and Ariadne,
recommended architect of his father-in-law Professor Stephen Miles that is capable of
doing labyrinth of dreamscapes; and lastly Arthur.
As Fischers transporting his Father corpse the team takes this opportunity to
isolate Fischer. By using the sedative of Cobbs Team, Fischer has been shared dream
with the extractor. And using the dream in a dream strategy, at each layered
dreaming. The person generating the dream must stay behind to give a kick (a
warning or indication of to wake up) that will be used to awaken other team sleeping. If
they die in that dream without having layered dream kick their subconscious will be go
to the deepest layer of the dream which called limbo, it is because of the heavy
sedative and multilayer dream.
On the first level of the Dream, Yusof was the one that generates the dream.
The team abducts Fischer in the rainy weather but due to Fischer subconscious training
when He was Young. Fischers trained subconscious projects attack that wound Mr.
Saito severely. Eames forge the identity of Peter Browning to suggest considering his
fathers will. Yusof was driving the van to escape Fischers Projection attack while the
other team is on the Dream of Arthur. As the second level or layer of the Dream, Arthur
takes the initiative of generating Hotel where extractors convince Fischer as their
Trained Projection and that his kidnapping was orchestrated by Browning and that they
are Fischer's subconscious dependency. Making Fischer, Ariadne, Mr. Saito and Cobb
go to Eames Dream. Earmes Dream was the third and supposedly last layer of the
dream. It dreamscape is designed to be in snowy mountain fortress setting. Fischers
was told that they are in Brownings subconscious but they are going deeper to Fischer
subconscious.
Yusuf, under assault in the first level, initiates his kick too soon by driving off a
bridge, removing the gravity of Arthur's dream world and causing an avalanche in
Eames' dream, a kick which all missed. Arthur improvises a new kick using an elevator
that will be synchronized with the van hitting the water, while the team in Eames' dream
races to finish the job before the new round of kicks.
Saito being succumbs in his wounds and due to sabotage attack of Mal Cobb by
killing Fischer to enter Limbo. Ariadne idea is to enter limbo, find Fischer and initially
make a new kick. Using Cobbs dream they enter the deepest layer of the dream,
Limbo. In Limbo, Cobb reveals that he spent 50 years with Mal in Limbo constructing
their own world sharing their memories until they become old together. Cobb initiates an
Idea to Mal for them to return in the reality or the real world and that is to commit suicide
to able to go to reality. But the simple idea grows as they go upper layer of the dream.
This makes Mal Cobb convinced that they are still in the dream. And that she committed
suicide and tried to persuade Cobb to do so too, by incriminating him in her death.
Facing a murder charge Cobb fled the U.S. leaving his children behind. After they found
Fischer (in Mals hands), Cobb decide to remain in Limbo to find Mr. Saito while Ariadne
push Fischer in the balcony that makes Fischer resuscitating at the mountain fortress.
When Fischer enter the safe room to discover and planted idea that his Father wants
him to be his own man. After this, the team except Cobb and Mr. Saito, ride a
synchronize kick back to the first layer of the dream. Ariadne jumps in the balcony in
the Limbo, Eames explode the snowy mountain fortress, Arthur blasts the elevator
containing the teams sleeping bodies and the van in Yusofs dream hits the water. Cobb
finds aged Saito in Limbo and the two remember their arrangement, maybe shooting
themselves and the team together with Fischer back to reality.
On the last part, Cobb successfully passes the U.S. customs to his waiting
father-in-law, who reunites with his children. Cobb attempts to determine if he is
dreaming or awake by spinning a top, but ignores its outcome to instead happily greet
his family.
Conflicts
Dream Vs Reality
Dreams can be defined by two things: first dreams are the things that we want
to be in the future and second, dreams are the things that happen on our subconscious
mind when sleeping. This film centers about our dreams when we sleep. It is our
desire to happen. For example, the desire of being with someone, having things that
you have, and making yourself what you dream of. While reality is what we are, what we
have and where we live. In this film, the characters are always dream and construct
their own dreams. In one particular scene in the movie when Cobb was looking for a
chemist Yusuf, there are twelve people in the basement share dream. For everyday
they share dreams about 3-4 hours and 40 hours in the dream. And the one that
guarding them said:
They come to be woken up, the dream has become their reality Thin Man (43:27)
Because of the desire of having their own wealth, fame and status, they were blinded
that the dream they dream is the reality to them.
While on the other hand, the Main character Cobb has a dream (things that they
will do in the future) that is
You said you dream that well grow old together Mal Cobb
They formulate that they (Cobb and his wife) can fulfill it when they go to the Limbo
where dream time is infinite. So they live there and become old together but theres a
time the Cobb implant an Idea to Mal that what world they living is not real and they
need to die so that they will come back to reality. But when they come back to reality
the idea of that dream retains to Mal that grows in her mind and convinced that they are
not in reality so then he commits suicide.
Dreams and Reality are two different things. But we can make the dream
becomes our reality in our own means. It is on our conviction to strive harder to make
that dream reality whether it was good or not.

Regret and Guilt
There people that is moving inside the dreams. It is the projection of the
dreamers subconscious mind. Their attitudes are dependent to what emotion that the
dreamer has. And the two points that I notice that affect the projection in this movie is
Regret and Guilt. Regrets are memories or circumstances that we ones have but due to
wrong decision it came out bad to us. While guilt synonyms with regret but it is
culpability for offences. When Ariadne goes to Cobbs Dream (56:00)
Ariadne: These are memories and you said never to use memories
Cobb : I know I did
Ariadne: Youre trying to keep her alive. You cant let her go.
Cobb : You dont understand. These are the moments I regret. Theyre the memories I
have to change
Cobb contains in his dream all memories that he regret. But the thing that he cant do is
to change or alter those memories, so he teaches Ariadne not to make dream that she
has memories. It will affect the subconscious mind of the dreamer that makes the
projection attack them or aggressive.

Cobb guilt when Mal commits suicide because of an idea he planted runs in his mind
that powers Mal as projection in his dream. Because of that Mals projection always
sabotage Cobbs plan on his missions. Having regret and guilt can make our mind
unstable to think when certain circumstance happens similar to what we regret or the
guilt we have.

Others will Vs Own Will
Robert Fischer and his father have a conflict between what Robert Fischer
wants to do and his father wants him to do. That thing is been used to implant Saitos
idea to broke the Business Empire he inherits to his father. Thus, Robert Fischer has
been motivated by an idea of doing his own will or what he wants to be. An idea that is
positively can change Robert Fischer to continue or ruin his fathers business. Our own
will or others own will affect what we are right now. It has a contribution to what we are
doing because some people do things with one reasons, it is either we are moved by
the others will or moved by our own will and passion.
