CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCTION
Oil palm is the main commodity for Malaysia at present. Some research has focused on
harvesting at the farm level so that production can be increased, reduced operating costs and
ways of working in the field are comfortable, convenient, fast and safe.
Profitability of oil palm cultivation is very good. It is estimated that one ton of crude palm oil
worth more than RM 1,500. To produce one ton of crude oil, of which five tonnes of fresh
fruit bunches needed. Each bunch of cut will result in approximately 5% of oil palm fruit falls
on the ground disintegrate. If the fruit is not collected, the oil palm plantation operators
would incur large losses as well as returns bear the maintenance costs.
Therefore, in-depth studies are very important in the manufacture of a new design to ensure
that the design will come out later to give maximum satisfaction to the user. After making a
detailed study of the problem employee then settled on the idea to produce a tool collector
loose oil palm seeds.
1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT
i. Takes a long time to collect loose fruit palm.
ii. Using a lot of manpower when collecting loose oil palm seeds manually.
iii. Resulting in low back pain and knee while collecting loose palm seeds manually. (not
ergonomic).
1.3 OBJECTIVES
Each product is made has its own objective no matter their shape or even create a product. So
is this product produced. Of the objectives set, the product to be produced in accordance with
the required specifications.
Among them are:
i. Collector tool produces loose palm seeds
ii. collecting loose palm of ten seed each at a time.
iii. Collect seeds loose 1 kg in 1 minute.

1.4 SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
Production loose collector tool is to use palm oil plantation workers, particularly the elderly.
1.5 LIMITATIONS
i. Not suitable for picking in a wedge area.
ii. Not appropriate to use in place of muddy.

BAB 2 : LITERITURE STUDY
2.1 INTRODUCTION
Previously there was a tool to collect loose palm seeds been produced, but there are
drawbacks in terms of materials and mechanisms used in the device. In 2011 a charity of
Melaka have created loose oil palm seed collector named tip Saw. it is made of recyclable
materials such as used mop sticks, nails and iron plates .After understand the concept of the
mechanism and the materials used in the devices we innovate and improve this tool in terms
of mechanisms and materials .
2.2 COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE MATERIAL AND MECHANISM
Materials used in Saw is used mop stick which is made from plastic. We replace the material
with the fiberglass material which is more lighter and more durable. Previously Tip Saw just
using flip mechanism same as mechanism in span mop. We replace it with brake cable
mechanism that used on the bicycle .Hence we produce a new tool that collect loose palm
seed named Palm Seed Saw that innovated from Tip Saw tools.
2.3 ISSUE
Collecting the loose palm seed manually give a big problem to this cultivator. The loose
palm seed usually collected by hand and grouped into buckets, plastic bags and sacks.
Workers had to bend the body to collect fruit on the ground and move from tree to tree. This
method makes it work more difficult, more waste time and cause low back pain workers.
Thus we have collected opinions to produce a tool that can save you time and help reduce the
burden to collect loose oil palm seeds.
2.4 DEFINITION
Palm Seed Saw that equipped with fibreglass connect with an aluminium plate that have nails
is using a manual process that's use human energy. It is portable and easy to operate.Simply
by pushing and hold the brake that place at the top of the rod and stoning a group of loose
palm seed and release the brake to release the loose palm seed that stoned.
