Last summer, when friends
Chaz Briggs and Tyler Woyshner,
both 22-years old, decided to
roller skate to the beach from
their homes in Moorestown, they
didnt know exactly what they
were getting themselves into. It
just seemed like something to do
on a beautiful sunny day.
Somehow, it got brought up in
conversation, Woyshner said.
We were thinking about going to
the beach and we love to roller
blade, so we just decided to give it
a try.
The trip totaled 53 miles and
took them more than five hours to
complete.
It was grueling, Briggs said.
We didnt really think too much
about how difficult it was going to
be. We all love to play roller hock-
ey and we can all skate, so we
werent prepared for just how
tough of a trip it was going to be.
Yet, while the trip may have ex-

The July 21 Township Council
meeting continued the solar ener-
gy discussion that began at the
meeting on July 7.
The issue is in regard to the
possible construction of a solar
field in Moorestown that would
create enough energy to run the
municipal buildings.
We got a solar 101 course at
our last meeting, Township
Manager Scott Carew said. Now
we have to decide how we are
going to move forward.
At the July 7 meeting, Kathy
Ward, chairperson of Sustainable
Moorestown, outlined the possi-
ble uses of solar energy in town.
The study done by Sustainable
Moorestown found solar fields
are a possibility in Moorestown,
but recommended bringing in a
professional engineer to create a
proposal for how to move for-
ward.
The discussion at the July 21
meeting revolved around what
steps the township would take to
begin the process.
Im in favor of trying to get
things done now, Deputy Mayor
Stacey Jordan said. We cant
keep putting things off, and this is
a chance for us to make a decision
that can take effect right now.
But, while Carew and Jordan
were in agreement to move for-
ward, Councilman Greg Newcom-
er was hesitant to appoint a new
engineer for the study.
We have already done a study
that cost us $50,000 or $60,000,
Newcomer said. I think it would
be smart to look over that study
before we begin a new one.
Newcomer cited the process as
a key component to the solar en-
ergy project. He was in favor of
doing more research internally
before seeking external re-
sources; however, he was in favor

ties, it also gave them a great idea:
doing the trip again, but this
time, trying to raise money for
charity.
That is exactly what they did
on July 18, when they redid the
53-mile trek to the beach. This
time, however, they enlisted a few
more friends and were better pre-
pared for what was ahead of
them.
It was still hard, dont get me
wrong, Briggs said. But, now
that we knew what we were get-
ting ourselves into, it was way
more fun.
Making the trip with Woyshn-
er and Briggs this time around
were Chris Chrurchman, Bryan
Rudolph and Corey Pedersen.
They left Moorestown at 9:30 a.m.
on July 18 and landed on Long
Beach Island four and a half
hours later.
It was even more rewarding
doing the skate this year, Woysh-
ner said. We knew we were rais-
ing money for charity, and we also
had more people with us, so it was
awesome.
For the second installment of
this voyage, the skate was given a
name: Shore for a Cure. A fitting
title, since the skate raised money
for two different cancer charities:
Livestrong and Camp No Worries.

Is seismic testing off LBI part
of climate change study?
I read in my Jersey Shore weekly Sand-
Paper that the National Science Founda-
tion is funding seismic testing near
Barnegat Inlet on Long Beach Island. It
said the studies are to be conducted by Rut-
gers University and the University of
Texas at Austin, as part of a climate
change study.
I wondered what we could learn about
climate change from taking soundings of
the ocean floor, but I decided to leave it to
the scientists. My sense of wonder came
back to me when I read a July 19 New York
Times article, White House Opens Door to
Exploring Atlantic for Oil.
The first few sentences read:
The Obama administration approved
guidelines on Friday for seismic searches
for oil and gas deposits in the Atlantic
Ocean, handing the petroleum industry a
significant victory in a bitter dispute with
environmental groups over the searches'
impact on marine life.
The decision opens the way for compa-
nies to seek permits to look for oil in a
stretch of the Atlantic from Delaware to
Florida, using compressed-air guns that

ext week, on Monday, Aug. 4 to
be precise, our company is cel-
ebrating its 10-year anniver-
sary. Ten years ago on that date, we
published the first newspaper in the
companys history The Haddonfield
Sun.
Ten years later, we publish 10 news-
papers each week, covering the towns
of Haddonfield, Moorestown, Cherry
Hill, Voorhees, Marlton, Medford, Mt.
Laurel, Tabernacle, Shamong and
Princeton. Weve grown a lot over the
last 10 years, but we havent lost sight
of our roots.
On Monday, when we turn the Big
One Zero, well be hosting a group of
our employees, customers, business
partners and community leaders who
helped make these 10 years so special
for us. Jack Tarditi, a leader in the
local community, will be the keynote
speaker.
The celebration at the Woodcrest
Country Club in Cherry Hill will in-
clude all the great things that every
party needs good food, good drinks, a
good atmosphere, a good speaker, good
conversation and good, classic silent
auction.
But what will make it extra special
and what were most excited about is
the good that our 10-year anniversary
celebration will help kick off.
As part of the celebration, we are
proud to announce the start of the Sun
newspapers Ray of Hope founda-
tion. Under the umbrella of the South
Jersey Foundation, the Ray of Hope
will raise money to give back to the
local communities we cover.
Back in the day, when we were a
much smaller company, we ran an an-
nual contest called the Ray of Hope.
Readers would submit short essays
nominating a local group, organiza-
tion, Little League team, PTA, Girl
Scout troop and others who were most
deserving of a monetary award. We
published all these essays, and let our
readers vote to select the winner. And
we gave that winner $500.
The Ray of Hope foundation we are
starting will help us get back to our
roots of giving back in a tangible way
to the communities that have support-
ed us and helped us grow over these
last 10 years. And this time, were look-
ing to make a bigger impact than just
$500 to one group each year.
Our party on Monday will be the
first fundraiser in our ongoing effort to
give back. Well have other ways that
well raise money with your help
in the coming months.
At the end of the day, though, where
well need your help the most is telling
us which local groups deserve the fi-
nancial aid. As we start to build a big-
ger and bigger fund, well run similar
contests to our original Ray of Hope to
help decide which organizations are
most deserving. And then well make a
contribution.
We cant wait to start, and were hop-
ing youll help us help those who do the
most in our communities.

blast the ocean bottom with thou-
sands of sound pulses as loud as a
howitzer. The pulses bounce off
geologic formations deep in the
earth, giving geologists hints of
where oil and gas deposits may
lie.
I no longer believe that the seis-
mic testing to be done off LBI is
really part of a climate change
study, or that it differs in kind
from the testing to be conducted
from Delaware to Florida.
The truth is that the White
House, the Department of the In-
terior, the National Science Foun-
dation, along with enabling con-
gressmen, senators and judges,
are using our tax dollars to per-
form free research for the oil and
gas industry. Ironically, they are
using the environmental concern
of climate change to hide a huge
subsidy to the fossil fuel indus-
tries that are exacerbating it.
Mark Twain once said A lie
can travel halfway around the
world before the truth can get its
pants on, and that was before the
internet! Let's not get caught
with our pants down. We are
being lied to on this one.
According to unidentified ex-
perts cited by the Times, the ap-
proval of seismic exploration off
the Atlantic Coast sends a clear
signal that allowing offshore
drilling rigs would be approved as
well. Does anybody doubt it?
Lets not be duped like nave chil-
dren.

Burlington and Camden Coun-
ties.
I wasnt able to volunteer at
Camp No Worries this summer,
Briggs said. We figured the pain
we were going to go through dur-
ing this skate was nothing com-
pared to what those kids go
through, so we decided to donate
half the proceeds to them.
To reach as many people as
possible, Shore for a Cure created
a Facebook page and also relied
on the community to spread the
word. To date, they have been able
to raise more than $2,600 for the
charities.
There are a lot of people we
need to thank for helping us with
getting the donations and being
able to complete the skate, Brig-
gs said. My mom was a huge
part of spreading the word. The
Pedersen family cheered us on
during the skate and gave us
water and took pictures. The
Woyshner family fed us when we
finally made it to the beach and
gave us a place to relax for a little
while. But, the most important
people are all the people who do-
nated. We cant thank them
enough.
This years event was a huge
success, according to Briggs. But,
he sees the potential for this to
continue to grow and hopes to
make it an annual event.
I definitely see this growing,
he said. Were hoping to keep
getting donations and get more
people involved so we can have
even more people doing the skate
next summer.

a Cure or to donate, visit www.

of looking into the idea of solar
energy.
I have been recommending a
solar project for six years, he
said. I do agree that we need to
move forward with it.
Despite the opposition from
Newcomer, the council eventually
agreed to bring in Maser Consult-
ing P.A. to present a proposal for
the consulting work.
The agreement came after
Carew and Jordan assured New-
comer that before the contract
would be awarded, the proposal
would be looked over by the coun-
cil in regard to cost.
The role of the consultant is
not to design the solar field,
Carew said. They will just pro-
vide us with information about
what steps need to be taken to
move forward with this process.
In other news:
Theresa Miller, director of
recreation, presented a possible
replacement for the Jeff Young
Hockey Rink that was demol-
ished recently. The plan that was
presented offered two possibili-
ties: one rink that would cost
$25,000 to $30,000 that would suf-
fice as a recreational, non-league
rink and one rink that would cost
$85,000 and $100,000 that would
suffice as a league rink.
The council agreed to look into
the possible costs and proposals
before making a decision.
Council appointed Gina Zegel
to the Appearance Committee.
Council awarded a contract to
Level-1 Construction for $561,000
for ultraviolet disinfection re-
placement at the wastewater
treatment plant.
