ceramic ware. Contempo- rary scholars believe it was developed in Mesoptomaia more than 5000 years ago.
A round, moist, lump of clay is thrown on the middle of the wheel head. It is made even and forced to the cen- tre by applying pressure with the hands.
The clay is opened by press- ing fingertips into the centre of the clay. The base is widened and the walls are pulled higher. Then the form is shaped and the rim is smoothed. The pot is then cut off of the wheel with a wire tool and left to dry slightly. Often, it is then flipped upside down and excess clay is trimmed off of the bottom.
Ceramic artists use the wheel to throw entire piec- es like bowls, plates and jars. They also use the wheel to throw parts which they later assemble.
