ISSUE 50 JANUARY 2014

2007 2014

It is most likely that you have not returned to the office yet, but we thought you
might want to start reading about Cambridge English exams and start planning
your academic year. We hope that the information you will find in this issue of
International Recognition will be useful!

As you will probably have noticed by now, the header in the bulletin has
changed. Do you like it better than last years? In 2013 we highlighted the
centenary of Cambridge English exams. This year there is another reason for
celebration. Founded in 1934, the Anglo is celebrating its 80
th
anniversary in
2014!

The January edition of International Recognition includes information about the
Cambridge English awards competition for Preparation Centres, an automatic
assessment system that Cambridge English Language Assessment is
developing at the moment, the fantastic resources Cambridge English Teacher
has to offer you, the professional development events we will be holding for
teachers in February, the survey we are still carrying out to collect your views
about the support we offer you, and finally, the examination and registration
dates for Cambridge English exams in 2014.

We hope you have a good return to the office in the next few days and that
2014 is full exciting projects and opportunities for you and your students.

Warm regards

The Anglo Department of International Examinations

New automatic assessment system for Writing

Cambridge English and Flo-Joe have teamed up
to work on a very interesting pilot. Their idea is to
offer a brand-new automatic assessment system
for writing. Definitely worth having a look at!

How can I take part?

All you have to do is sign up for the service on the Flo-Joe website and submit
your answer to a set writing task. You will then get feedback and can redraft
and resubmit your answer to try to get a better result.

How reliable is the system?

The project is at the beta testing phase, so the system may not be a hundred
percent accurate at the moment. But why not check it for yourself? Ask your
students to sign up for the service and try it out.

How can I access the Flo-J oe website?

These are the hyperlinks to the writing task and automatic assessment system:
Writing task: http://www.flo-joe.co.uk/fce/students/writing/task.htm
Assessment: http://www.flo-joe.co.uk/fce/students/writing/assessment.htm

The project is being run by Cambridge English Language Assessment. If you
have any questions regarding the system you can contact the researchers at
sat-support@ilexir.co.uk. They are keen to hear your views of the system and
after you have submitted your piece of writing, you will be able to offer
feedback.

Resources in Cambridge English Teacher

Enhance your teaching skills and make the
most of your talents by subscribing to
Cambridge English Teacher. You will be able
to join online courses and discussion forums
and check a library of resources including
articles and webinars.

The value of using technologies with young learners

Nicky Hockly, Cambridge English Teacher consultant for
technology, is currently discussing the value of using
technologies with young learners. Nicky argues that the way
you use technology with young learners depends on their
ages:

Very young learners are still developing fine motor skills such as
drawing or learning to write, and there are ways that certain technologies
can help with this. Pre-teens can learn to search for and evaluate
information on the web, or create multimedia work with images and
videos. Older teens can discuss appropriate and inappropriate behaviour
on social networks.

These are just a few of the ideas that Nicky Hockly discusses in an article she
has specially written for Cambridge English Teacher. You will also be able to
watch a short introductory video on the subject and ask Nicky herself any
questions on the use of technology with young learners through the discussion
forum. Log on to www.CambridgeEnglishTeacher.org and join the benefits of
being part of the Cambridge English community.

Events for teachers in February

The Anglo Young Learners Day Friday 21
st
February

Like in 2012 and 2013, in February this year
we will be holding a special event for teachers
of young learners. Stay tuned for further
information!

Nik Peachey at the Anglo Friday 24
th
, 25
th
& 26
th
February

With the support of the British Council, Nik
Peachey will soon be arriving in Uruguay and
delivering a series of workshops on the
subject of ICT and how to maximise the use of
technology inside and outside the classroom.

This is just the beginning of what we hope will be another year of exciting
seminars and workshops throughout the year and all over the country. We hope
you can join us at one of these events. We hope that you will find them very
useful and that they will contribute to your development as a professional
teacher.

Survey about the support we offer you

How do you feel about the support we offer you in
connection with Cambridge English exams? Are
you satisfied? How can we improve? These are
just some of the questions we are aiming to
answer in preparation for 2014.

Hearing how you feel about the support we offer Cambridge English
Preparation Centres can be very useful to us. The Anglo seminars programme,
the support we offer students, teachers and institutions before the exams, while
the exams are taking place and after the examinations period is over are just
some of the areas we are looking into.

Completing the survey will probably take you between 15 and 20 minutes. All
you have to do is click here. Most questions are of an objective type and very
easy to answer but you will also find plenty of open questions for you to expand
as much as you like. Help us to improve and offer you a service that meets all
your needs!

Thank you very much in advance for taking part in this survey!
