EDU 1010 Chapter 10

Yukari Jewkes

Chapter 10 This week write your philosophy of classroom management. Include statements of
how you plan to create productive learning environments for your students and how you might
address student misbehaviors.

The goals of effective classroom management are creating positive classroom climate,
creating a community of learners, developing learner responsibility, and maximizing time and
opportunity for learning.
At the onset of a new school year, classroom climate is usually positive because all
students and teachers themselves are excited to start a new year. So teachers responsibility is
keep the positive climate and enhance it as they spend time with students through a year. To
create community of learners, teachers need to communicate that a classroom is not only a place
for making friends, but also a place for learning. Multiple channels can be used to communicate
this to students, such as explanation, teachers behaviors and focus, instruction, and sometimes
discipline.
Developing learner responsibility is something I would like to focus because I believe
being responsible and prepared is helpful even after they graduate from school. This habit will be
acquired by accumulation of successful experiences, therefore, teachers are required to determine
what kind of responsibilities are expected, and they have to be appropriate for student ages.
Maximizing time and opportunities for learning heavily depends on lesson preparation
and careful observation upon students. Certain activities will engage students quickly, and some
will need more careful and specific instruction. The students temperament and class character
will affect how activities flow in classroom. And even when the contents and goals of learning
are the same, how it is introduced and experienced may differ from a class to another.
With genuine and sincere eye contacts and smiling along with verbal communication,
children will feel that a teacher cares for them. But another significant way of showing that they

care for students is to hold students to high standards. And teachers themselves need to be a
model by being effective and organized. Lastly, class rules need to be specific, simple, and clear.
And they have to be observed consistently.
Intervening with misbehaviors can be challenging. Being consistent in a timely manner is
the first factor to intervene effectively. And what I learned in the textbook is maintaining the
flow of lesson also help students understand what is important for them. By a quick and efficient
intervention and by quickly turning back to lesson, teachers will maintain the classroom climate
positive, and if particular students need more attention, it can be provided during a recess or after
school. In addition to that, Intervention is not just inhibiting or controlling undesired behaviors.
Students need to learn why they should not act in such ways. If serious misbehaviors are seen,
teaches are to communicate with students the reason of intervention and the consequences upon
themselves and others.
